Edna St. Vincent Millay: Do you have a favorite poem or one you can recite?
Thank you for the ask! (This was actually a double ask—the first one was here!)
I started answering this a bit ago, saved it in my drafts, and then panicked because I couldn’t find it immediately and I thought Tumblr had deleted it…but nope, it’s right here, just saved under the date it was asked (a few days ago) instead of the date I started to write my answer. So @dragoneye01 has gotten their answer in the form of both this published ask and a series of panicked DMs. That’s the way it goes on this hellsite, I guess.
Edna St. Vincent Millay: Do you have a favorite poem or one you can recite?
I’ll admit my taste in poetry is pretty basic (especially given I’m an English major), but here are a few I really like—and by a few, I mean eight-fucking-teen, because I couldn’t whittle down the list.
Alone - Edgar Allan Poe (when I was 15, lonely, and honestly quite pretentious and overdramatic, this one SPOKE to me)
America - Claude McKay
Antidotes to Fear of Death - Rebecca Elson
Aubade with Burning City - Ocean Vuong
A Bird Came Down the Walk - Emily Dickinson (I’m taking a whole class on her work this coming semester!!)
The Bells - Edgar Allan Poe (this is mainly because I sang a setting of it in 9th-grade choir and it was fun to sing the word “tintinnabulation”. By the way, semi-relevant post here)
A Brave and Startling Truth - Maya Angelou
How Things Work - Gary Soto
I’m Nobody! Who are you? - Emily Dickinson
Jabberwocky - Lewis Carroll (one of my last high school assignments was a presentation about nonsense poetry and how it’s translated, comparing this to the poems of Sukumar Ray in Bengali!)
Mock Orange - Louise Glück
Not an Elegy for Mike Brown - Danez Smith
The Old Astronomer to His Pupil - Sarah Williams (this is the one I often cite as my favorite poem of all time)
Planet of Love - Richard Siken
The Raven - Edgar Allan Poe (duh)
Sonnet 130 - William Shakespeare (my favorite of his sonnets, but not the one I was assigned as a member of my college’s Shakespeare club—that’s Sonnet 11)
To Live in the Borderlands - Gloria Anzaldúa
The Tradition - Jericho Brown (for my first-year writing seminar in college, I wrote a paper comparing this poem to Not an Elegy for Mike Brown, and I wrote some of the ideas of that essay in the tags here)
In terms of reciting poems, I’m pretty bad at committing poems to memory (weirdly, I feel like I’m actually better at memorizing prose). BUT, in fourth grade, I read every Shel Silverstein poetry compilation I could get my hands on, and those kinda stuck in my memory and remain there today, over a decade later. I can’t remember the exact wording of poems I wrote entire papers on, but I can still recite the entirety of Shel Silverstein’s “The Nap Taker” by heart.
[Classic Author Asks]
#ask#answered#dragoneye01#classic author asks#poetry#compilation#maya’s musings#thank you for the ask!#fun fact: i started writing this even EARLIER today and tumblr deleted it when the app crashed#so this is actually the THIRD time i’ve written this all out#i’m pretty sure every time i write a hyphen and space my phone is going to be suggesting ‘emily dickinson’ after it for the rest of time#(which may not be a bad thing considering the class i’ll be taking next semester)#(also my phone has given ‘cowboy’ followed by ‘bebop’ as its first suggestions BEFORE I EVEN WRITE ANYTHING so make of that what you will)

BEST DIRECTORS IN CINEMA-3
Hi everyone! This blog is going to be the 3rd part of 8 Part Series of who I think are the Best Directors Cinema as ever seen
And today I will be talking about
SATYAJIT RAY
Satyajit Ray (born May 2, 1921, Calcutta [now Kolkata], India—died April 23, 1992, Calcutta) was a Bengali motion-picture director, writer, and illustrator who brought the Indian cinema to world recognition with Pather Panchali (1955; The Song of the Road) and its two sequels, known as the Apu Trilogy. As a director, Ray was noted for his humanism, his versatility, and his detailed control over his films and their music. He was one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.
(Early Life)
Ray was an only child whose father died in 1923. His grandfather was a writer and illustrator, and his father, Sukumar Ray, was a writer and illustrator of Bengali nonsense verse. Ray grew up in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and was looked after by his mother. He entered a government school, where he was taught chiefly in Bengali, and then studied at Presidency College, Calcutta’s leading college, where he was taught in English. By the time he graduated in 1940, he was fluent in both languages. In 1940 his mother persuaded him to attend art school at Santiniketan, Rabindranath Tagore’s rural university northwest of Calcutta. There Ray, whose interests had been exclusively urban and Western-oriented, was exposed to Indian and other Eastern art and gained a deeper appreciation of both Eastern and Western culture, a harmonious combination that is evident in his films.
(His Famous Works)
Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955) won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. This film, along with Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) (1959), form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. He also authored several short stories and novels, primarily for young children and teenagers. Popular characters created by Ray include Feluda the sleuth, Professor Shonku the scientist, Tarini Khuro the storyteller, and Lalmohan Ganguly the novelist.
(Filmmaking Style)
His Filmmaking
Ray had been subconsciously paying a tribute to Jean Renoir throughout his career, who influenced him the most.Ray considered script-writing to be an integral part of direction. Initially he refused to make a film in any language other than Bengali. In his two non-Bengali feature films, he wrote the script in English; translators adapted it into Hindustani under Ray's supervision. The narrative structure of Ray's films are represented by musical forms such as sonata, fugue and rondo. Kanchenjunga, Nayak and Aranyer Din Ratri are examples of this structure.
(His Filmography)
Ray made over 36 feature film in his 4 decade long. He made movies such as Pather Panchali in 1955,Aparajito in 1956,Parash Pathar and Jalsaghar in 1958, Apur Sansar in 1959, Devi in 1960. He made movies such as Teen Kanya in 1961, Kanchenjungha and Abhijan in 1962,Mahanagar in 1963,Charulata and Two I'm 1964,Kapurush-0-Mahapurush in 1965,Nayak in 1966,Chiriyakhana in 1967,Goopy Gyne & Bagha Byne in 1969,Aranyer Din Ratri and Pratiwandi in 1970, Seemabaddha and Sikkim in 1971,Inner Eyes in 1972,Ashani Sanket in 1973,Sonar Kella in 1974,Jana Aranyw in 1975,Bala in 1976,Shatranj ka Khilari in 1977,Joi Baba Felunath in 1979,Hirak Rajar Deshe and Pikoo in 1980,Sadgati in 1981,Ghare Bhare in 1984,Sukumar Ray in 1987,Ganashatru and Shakha Proshakha in 1990,Agantuk in 1990.

He also won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival
(Legacy)
Ray is considered one of the greatest film directors of all time. He is a cultural icon in India and in Bengali communities worldwide. Following his death, the city of Calcutta came to a virtual standstill, as hundreds of thousands of people gathered around his house to pay their last respects. Ray's influence has been widespread and deep in Bengali cinema; many Bengali directors, including Aparna Sen, Rituparno Ghosh and Gautam Ghose as well as Vishal Bhardwaj, Dibakar Banerjee, Shyam Benegal and Sujoy Ghosh from Hindi cinema in India, Tareq Masud and Tanvir Mokammel in Bangladesh, and Aneel Ahmad in England, have been influenced by his craft.Beyond India, filmmakers Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, James Ivory, Abbas Kiarostami, Elia Kazan, William Wyler,François Truffaut, John Huston, Carlos Saura, Isao Takahata, Oliver Stone,Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson,Danny Boyle and Christopher Nolan.

As a sort of run up ask (?) for the Pushpa (Part) 2: The Rule trailer coming out on April 7th.....
........Thoughts on Pushpa (Part) 1: The Rise?
Sukumar does thing where he has a female actor as a love interest to the hero and.... that's all she is. Whenever he's not writing a love story, the "love interest" has no other work except like... be in love with him ig? One Nenokkadine, Rangasthalam (which is his best work till date btw) and now Pushpa.
I just ask of Sukumar to get done with the accessorized better half facet of his stories. And the abrupt item song trend. Jigelu Raani and Oo Antava are not bad, but their placement in the screenplay is so fucking odd. He has the following and the skill to polarize audience on this and I wonder why he won't.
I liked Pushpa for its authenticity. Allu Arjun, his physique, his accent in most of the parts... He seems like the og naatu lumberjack which is unsurprising because I've seen him transform for Sarainodu.
dsp continues to copy his own music and who am i to question it? he mustve been tired from carrying the music industry for ten years.
FaFa is a good addition but I really want his character to have a reasonable arc/progression.

Sukumar Roy
Ability- HaJaBaRaLa (I might change the name later but I like how silly it sounds)
He's based on a Bengali Author by the same name and I'll just drop the Author lore before I get to my oc lore.
Author lore-
Roy was born in the pinnacle of Bengal Renaissance in a family filled with literary talents. He's father Upendra Kishore Roy was friends with Rabindranath Tagore who influenced a lot of Sukumar's writings. Some of his other family friends include - prominent Indian scientists Jagadish Chandra Bose and Prafulla Chandra Roy.
Sukumar Roy himself graduated from Presidency College with double Honours in Physics and Chemistry and started writing during this time after being inspired by a classmate (he turned him into a funny character called 'pagla (mad) Dashu thus proving why one should never mess with authors and artists). He then went to School of Photo-engraving and lithography in London to study photography and printing technology, fascinated by art he also trained himself in illustration and illustrated all his characters himself.
He also has two articles in The Penrose Annual describing his new method for halftone block making. After Graduating he went on to join the Royal Photographic society. His father launched a children's magazine Sandesh (his family was rich af, they constructed a whole ass building and set up a fucking printing press for this 😭, my parents don't even pay me pocket money 🙂) which Sukumar started writing for after he returned from England.
Ability-
(finally, the nice part)
HaJaBaRaLa manifested in Sukumar when he was five years old. The ability allows him to Take up to five animal pictures, merge them into one and morph them into reality (he basically creates Frankenstein animals 😑). All of the animals he creates can communicate with him and understand human language.
OC lore-
(finally)
Sukumar Ray's father was an Indian spy and nationalist who worked for the Red Fort and helped the country in The Great war, He died when Sukumar was five which resulted in the annihilation of his whole family by a mysterious organisation and manifestation of his ability.
He travelled east and stayed in Sundarbans for the following 12 years stealing from locals and staying with his creations, this allowed him to hone his abilities and be on par with powerful ability users of the country.
He met his current mentor Rabindranath Tagore in The forest itself at 17 and pestered him into joining his ability based organisation after losing in a fight with him. The death of his family still affects him to this day and he still searches for clues of that organisation whenever possible. He also has a sweet tooth.
(I'm planning on making Tagore a similar character to Fukuchi, not all that similar but some traits would match)
I thought it'd be nice to share some of the og author's work so-
Khai-Khai (Eat-Eat)
Heshoram Hushiyarer Diary (The diary of Heshoram Hushiyar)
HaJaBaRaLa (Mumbo-Jumbo)
Jhalapala O Onanyo Natok (Cacophony and Other Plays)
Lokkhoner Shoktishel (Lokkhon Shellshocked)
Chalachittachanchari
Shabdakalpadrum
Bohurupi (Chameleon)
Abak Jalpan (A Strange Drink of Water 1914) Bhasar Atyachar (Torture of Language 1915) Barnamalatatva (Theory of Alphabet) Desh-Bidesher Golpo (Tales from Many Lands) Jiboner Hisab(Bidye bojhai babumoshai)
That's all thanks for reading 🩵
