Sue Thackery and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day ↳ “ I’ve been robbed of my inheritance, my career, my flat, the man I have devoted over 30 years of my life to, the man I thought I’d grow old with. The man I love. Yes! I still love him. Bastard. I’ve made a fool of myself in front of everyone. And to top it all, I have pranged my car and I’ve got no where to live.”

Girlfriends | Interview with Miranda Richardson who plays Sue Thackery
What attracted you to Girlfriends? “Number one, Kay has a very strong back catalogue of work and she is particularly strong on women and writing for women, across the demographic, so that’s always exciting. I think it’s smart to write for this generation, or this age, generally, but women of middle years and upwards, have an accumulation of experience and stuff going on, connections,…

The actress, who stars as Linda Hutchinson in Girlfriends, confessed that she and Zoe Wanamaker would often be left envious of fellow actress Miranda Richardson.
Phyllis’ character appears to be stuck in the past with her hippie style while Zoe’s downtrodden Gail Stanley could be seen applying mascara to her grey hairs in the first instalment.
The pair’s low-budget style on the ITV series often meant that they were left feeling jealous of Miranda’s wardrobe as Sue Thackery always cuts a glamorous appearance.
Addressing how she felt about her costume for the Kay Mellor drama compared to Miranda’s, Phyllis admitted: “It’s nice to be downtrodden.
“I enjoyed being a bit of a hippie type. It took me back to the real thing and I did look a bit like that back in the day so it was nice to revisit it.
“There were occasionally times when I would look at Miranda with her beautiful wardrobe and think, ‘F**k that. For god’s sake.’”
Her co-star Zoe went on to add: “The only time I felt jealous was when I asked the wardrobe if instead of the £2.99 tights they got me, could I have a pair of Wolford.
“She said, ‘No, we can’t afford that.’”
However, writer Kay Mellor defended the decision to have the women looking so different and confessed she became very involved in finding designer clothes for Miranda’s character Sue.
“I was quite specific that I wanted these three women to be very different throughout the script,” she told press including Express.co.uk.
“I thought it would be boring to have three women all the same.”
Kay went on to add: “We spent all of the budget on Sue. I mean, I was the worst one, I kept going, ‘No, that’s not good enough for Sue, I want her to look really good, top-notch.’”
Tonight’s finale will see Linda, Gail and Sue head to Spain to identify Micky’s (Steve Evets).
But as the women go to identify the body, things take an unexpected turn, and a shocking revelation threatens to cause chaos for them all.

Review: “Highs and Lows” Ep. 1102
(Cross-posted over on Facebook.)   (Preamble: It would be a crying shame if certain folks in the TV industry didn't sit up and take notice of this episode when the time comes around for handing out awards... Just sayin'...) And speaking about crying: we were warned, and we were not lied to! I definitely had a couple tissues to soak up some tears watching Alisha Newton's beautiful performance. Mark Haroun's script offered her a great opportunity to showcase a range of emotions, and she delivered! "Every generation has a story" is the Season 11 theme, and "Highs and Lows" jumped right into the spirit of things.
We had Georgie confronting Charles Thackery, the person responsible for killing her biological parents 14 years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Jade, in a rare turn as the voice of reason and concern, tags along for the ride. When Georgie accidentally mows down a sign on Thackery's property trying to beat a hasty retreat, we know there will be repercussions...
Tumblr media
We had Tim recalling Mitch from his new job in Calgary (but does he *really* have a new job in Calgary? I'm skeptical...) to help catch a skunk that got inside one of the Dude Ranch cabins. "Hilarity ensues" is the appropriate term, I think.
Tumblr media
We had Lisa and Jack dealing with some "personal" issues that might also have some long-term repercussions...
Tumblr media
Finally, there was Amy and Ty contemplating the right person to name as legal guardian for Baby Lyndy in the event that something happens to them.
Tumblr media
Anyone who's read any of my "reviews" in the past will know I always rave about Mark Haroun's script, and I'm going to rave again. "Highs and Lows" was great. It was emotional, poignant, cute, funny, and even shocking at times.
Under the "emotional and poignant" heading, we have the main story line: that of Georgie dealing with the news Charles Thackery is living just outside Hudson. After fleeing the property before they can even really talk (just some awkward moments at the door where Georgie stammers she's at the wrong house), Charles does the smart thing and takes down the license plate of Lou's SUV. He's probably all set to press charges, or sue for damages, or whatever, until Charles hears from Jack that Georgie is the daughter of the couple he killed 14 years ago. The change in Charles' demeanour is palpable. (I think I got teary-eyed right then and there.) The man went pale, and his eyes lost all liveliness, so two thumbs up to Dylan Taylor for that great performance.
Tumblr media
Over at the Dude Ranch, Mitch is less than thrilled to be bamboozled into helping Tim catch a skunk. When the creature predictably lets loose its stinky spray while trapped in a cage (but covered with a *duvet*!), Tim makes sure it's Mitch who must take the reeking animal to the wildlife preserve.
Tumblr media
Jack is finding it tough to keep a lid on his suspicions when Lisa receives flowers from Toulon from a man named "Fernand", and eventually learns he's a real estate agent ("the world's best-looking" real estate agent, by Amy's estimation). When Jack finally reveals to Lisa he needs to get something off his chest, telling her he's a bit jealous of another man sending her flowers, she has a shocking revelation of her own: she's nearly *broke*. But instead of laying off some of her staff (people with families to feed and mortgages to pay), she's going to rent out her Toulon property to "keep the lights on" at Fairfield. (Mark Haroun gets an extra gold star for physically returning us to Lisa's place for the first time since Season One.) I don't know how Lisa's financial situation will ultimately play out; I am curious to know how she's gone from one of Hudson's richest women (Ashley Stanton's description from years ago) to nearly folding her business... Will she *lose* Fairfield?
Tumblr media
Moving on to the "cute" scenes... After Amy observes Caleb being utterly precious with Lyndy, and after Ty sees Cass actually bonding with a stray dog to the point of deciding to adopt him, the new parents decide to ask their friends to be their child's legal guardians. Cass and Caleb couldn't be more thrilled, and readily agree.
Tumblr media
By the end of the episode, Georgie makes the very mature decision to allow Charles the chance to "make amends". He doesn't quite ask for forgiveness, because he figures he doesn't deserve it for what he did. Georgie tells him she can't forgive what she can't remember, but wants him to make her a promise: that he'll love his own daughter, and be the kind of dad who's always there for her, no matter what, even if she doesn't always seem to appreciate it or express her love for him.
Tumblr media
Her words to Charles speak right to the heart of Peter, who had hastily flown back from Vancouver as soon as he heard about what had happened at the Thackery property. Georgie had initially given Peter the cold shoulder, but we all come to understand his actions meant more to her than she was able to articulate. Georgie was in tears, Charles was in tears, Peter was in tears, and frankly, *I* was in tears.
Tumblr media
Final notes:
Georgie's emotional and mental state had been adversely affecting her partnership with Flame. She was knocking over jumps she was previously clearing. Amy instinctively knew it was the rider and not the horse; but Georgie chose to blame Flame. At one point, Georgie storms off, claiming she has homework, so Amy takes the horse over the jumps, easily clearing them. Georgie probably felt angry and humiliated at being so transparent, and Amy might have thought she was pushing too hard to prove Flame wasn't the problem. After facing Charles and coming to terms with everything, Georgie goes right back to sailing over the jumps with Flame. It was a lovely (though predictable) way to close the episode.
Tumblr media
Tim's reaction on learning from Lou the price of the ruined duvet: Priceless. (He thought he was being such a smart a$$ saving money by not hiring a real pest control person. Heh.)
Tumblr media
Bravo to the cast and crew. Season 11 is shaping up to be an amazing one, so I hope the quality of the first two episodes continues into the remaining 16.
