Hii I have an au idea. What if Makoto had been the one to be kidnapped instead of Byakuya? He heard Komaru was there and jumped at it instead of talking to his classmates and bosses first. I imagine since it's kind of agreed on that Makoto was the one who stopped Junko Enoshima the warriors of hope would have more of interest in him. Ultimate successor makoto core fr
Oooh, that's similar to my Komaegi UDG AU, but I love your focus on the Warriors of Hope. I feel like the version where Makoto is entirely stuck with them instead of wandering Towa City is absolutely an equally interesting route.
I would love it if as soon as any of the kids mentions Makoto killing Junko, he just perplexedly replies, "...Did you guys watch the broadcast? I begged her not to go through with the execution. I'm sad it happened, too!"
Monaca would probably just go, "Then it's Big Bro Makoto's job to make it right!"
Now, maybe I'm just optimistic, but I think Makoto can outwit these kids. The way I see this playing out is, Masaru, Jataro, Kotoko, and Nagisa are all either trying to teach Makoto how to be the new Ultimate Despair or just genuinely showing off to him what they've been up to. Which motivation it is depends on the kid, but the effect is the same: They each find themselves growing to trust Makoto, and they start to enjoy getting to be kids around someone they trust, more than they enjoy murdering people.
The fact that all of the kids except Monaca are becoming more and more focused on showing Makoto the cool sculpture they made or the new kind of ice cream they invented (they just poured maple syrup on an existing flavor) than doing the successor stuff or the take-over-the-city stuff would be a problem, but really Monaca's been trying behind the scenes to break Komaru the whole time, either to make her the successor still, or to use her suffering to break Makoto later, and Nagito has been kind of keeping an eye on both developments to see if Makoto would get through to Monaca before Monaca breaks Komaru.
I think Makoto and Monaca would both surprise each other. She's surprised that she actually does want him to be her big brother, and he's surprised by just how far she'll go to make him despair. Everyone she lets him get attached to is a new person to potentially harm to bring him closer to despair.

Hi!!
What is your opinion on servant/despair nagito?
AUGH! hello autism activating anon thank you from your ask!
Servant I think honestly is pretty well written and doesn't erase any of Nagito's character which I really love. Also he's in like the most bdsm outfit??? ever??? HUH?? it's kind of hilarious tbh.
Mostly, I really enjoy that as a Despair Nagito's beliefs aren't just erased. He's willing to do even more for hope than before, becoming despair himself, whereas before he seemed to have a limit he wouldn't cross. Which is honestly saying something since he thinks murder can be valid in the name of hope beforehand anyways.
I also like the funny detail that he's a servant with a chain on his neck at all times, but no one is really pulling the strings? Like, he's a "servant," to the warriors of hope but truly he has control over the situation. He chooses to stay there, if he truly desired to he could have left. His chain is there, he has the appearance of a servant, but no one is tugging on it, he's the one truly in control. Hopefully that makes sense lmao!!
I also thought that him seeing Komaru being a normal girl and knowing Makoto had hidden hope as a talent thinking she might have hope as well is pretty well written! It definitely makes sense why he'd think that.
Also, as weird as it is I actually really like how he looks as servant. The artwork for his sprites and the fanart I've seen is really awesome honestly!!
I used to think that he was just in Ultra Despair Girls for fan service, which probably a bit, but I do actually really enjoy how they use his role as a contributing antagonist properly. It's mostly expanding upon the idea of him as a Despair that we see in Chapter 0 of Danganronpa 2 with his love and hate obsession with Junko. He wants to be more involved than ever before and has no limit for how far he'll go, he actively will create the despair needed himself for hope to thrive. And that's so cool!!! It's basically pulling him and his beliefs their utmost extreme to explain how someone like him could become a despair, and the best part is that it makes sense! You can understand it given his character. He hates despair, so the only way he'd ever be okay with becoming despair is if it was in the name of hope, and that's exactly what they do!
I also think it's SO funny that out of all of the despairs, he's the most harmless out of them. Like, Sonia burned her own country to the GROUND, Teruteru ate his OWN MOTHER, but Nagito? He was just a servant to some weird terrorist kids, and ultimately was the main contributing factor to hope winning in the end. He brought Komaru so there could be a fair fight with Hope and Despair after all!
I think Mocaca's character after Ultra Despair Girls was kind of treated badly lmao, like, I feel like there was a lot of missed potential but they just threw her to the side because they never planned to do anything with her. However the Idea Nagito's ramblings just made her sick of the world is HILARIOUS though. Kind of Ironic that he saved her in hopes to be a successor to Junko for more hope to win in the end when his contributions led her to becoming nothing.
Also pretty Ironic that he KNEW what Izuru was going to do, and he wanted to see Junko again. But he never did, he died before he got to see what him as a Despair wanted to see. By his own hands nonetheless!!
Nagito as a Despair is really fucking weird with his outfit and all, but I actually really do love him. I really love the outfit, the approach they take to the only way he could become a despair with his beliefs, and his role in the story.
The brainwashing plot is a little clumsy, but I do enjoy that the way they treat brainwashing in the Danganronpa franchise is that the despair video manipulates your emotions. It doesn't overwrite anything, it just adds a desire to cause despair or excuses causing despair more. I think it's a little more realistic than just a whole bunch of teenagers being talked into becoming terrorists anyway.
servant you are iconic mwa <3

A lot of the fandom takes Komaru at face value about being "normal" and it's really disappointing because like, the entire point there is that she's a thousand miles outside of normal. That is extremely important, because her not being remotely normal is a major reason she's the prospective Successor.
Firstly, Genocide Jack is a psychosexual serial killer. This is a real life classification of serial killer that she easily and obviously fits criteria of. Her reason for murdering men is because the two of them are attracted to those men and take out their anger about their inability to be with those men on those men via murdering them. This is most commonly a type of serial killer man that targets women, although there have been the occasional woman and gay man of this type. The most famous gay man examples are Jeffery Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy. Komaru brushes this off extremely easily and fairly quickly becomes friends with her.
The canon does not allow you to chock this up to anime logic, because we have already seen how a normal person reacts to this. Her own brother, Makoto. He never gets over this. None of the other survivors get over this. Komaru's ability to be friends and possibly more with her is explicitly abnormal. There are one set of FTEs that are explicitly declared non-canon. At the end of Toko's FTEs in DR1, she declares Makoto her first friend and begins writing a new book. In UDG, she has not been writing and declares Komaru her first friend. Thus, Toko's FTEs are explicitly non-canon. Makoto did not do them.
Then of course there's the most obvious example that everyone knows. How she reacts to the Haiji reveal. People tend to overlook that Toko also is like "what the fuck" about both the reveal and Komaru's reaction. Toko acknowledges that that is not remotely normal, and shows what a normal reaction to it is. Komaru finds his openness about it attractive, and this is explicitly treated as abnormal.
Then there's the motivation bad ending. Once again, the game provides us with a contrasting example that proves that the game is aware her reaction is not normal. Orgasming in such a situation is actually extremely common. It's a physiological reaction to stimuli, not an emotional reaction. Orgasming from such an experience does not change your outlook on it like Komaru has, millions of survivors can tell you that.
Kotoko is right there to show us what a normal reaction to such experiences looks like. Komaru's reaction in the bad ending is extremely, unarguably abnormal and the mere existence of Kotoko shows that the writing is aware of this. For Komaru to have to actively choose to resist, and for choosing not to resist to create that result, she has to actively be suppressing what we see in the bad ending there. The orgasming just leads to her no longer wearing the mask, it doesn't change her mind. Even in the canon outcome, she brushes it off easily and quickly, and again, the plot shows us that that's abnormal since Kotoko is right there.
These three situations create an obvious and strong Rule of Three. Three times throughout the plot, we are seeing Komaru have extremely atypical, abnormal reactions to a specific pattern of crimes. Three sexually-motivated crimes, Komaru finds the first easy to brush off after a quick bit of processing, the second attractive, and right under the mask of normality, she is into being the victim of the third.
But there's one further aspect: The Bomb Inside Her. Komaru's favorite manga is about a girl with a bomb inside her that will explode if she ever falls in love. She will be destroyed, her life will be over, if she ever gives into her true feelings. That's the plot of Komaru's favorite work of media. When you consider that in combination with everything else, it reflects a lot on what her internal self is.
Thus why Komaru is the one chosen to be the Successor. If Komaru's presented self-concept were true, she would be a terrible choice for the Successor. However, her true self is not the one she claims to be. Komaru is wearing a mask of normality, but underneath, she's pretty fucked up herself. Despair!Komaru would be a shameless depraved pervert with absolutely no limits. And with "an ending with neither hope nor despair", she neither rejects nor fully embraces this. Her, Toko, and Jack stay together. She's fully embraced not giving a crap about the psychosexual serial killer's crimes due to her personal feelings. She's able to easily forgive Kotoko because it wasn't really that much of an issue for her, her resistance was a choice she made to stay loyal to Toko and Jack and their goals, not proper horror and disgust at the situation like Kotoko experienced.
I feel like Komaru has become rather appreciated in the fandom (she used to not be nearly as much), but kinda like Fandom!Mukuro, it's very disconnected from what canon actually presents. Part of that is just that the age of most fans doesn't really fit the actual target demographic, and there's a lot more depth and subtext and things left up to the player to figure out than people give it credit for. People take a "the curtains are just blue" approach to everything, when the curtains are blue for important reasons.

I always thought it was sad that the Successor (note: many people have mistaken Black Junko for a beta design for Junko because of a lack of translation, but she's actually a design for a cut Ultra Despair Girls character, the Successor to Junko Enoshima aka Second-Generation Enoshima Junko, before that became what Monaca was trying to make Komaru) didn't have her own Mukuro. So I commissioned JunkoEXE to do this.

so here's the thing.
monaca wanted to make a new junko right. junko's successor. junko 2.0, if you will. (and obviously did not know she had a couple of her monokuma's running around with junko's alter ego chip embedded in them; certainly did not know that kurokuma had one. which maybe says something about junko more than it does about monaca, but that's beside the point.)
junko 2.0. that was the goal.
and monaca was, like, obsessed with junko in the way that children get super obsessed with people or shows or movies or characters or animals or etc. that they like. (not just kids! this is not a judgment! just a note!)
and monaca's decision to make junko 2.0 was to find the most plucky, most average girl. who is also the little sister of the ultimate hope and ends up becoming the ultimate little sister of hope (fuyuhiko tearing his eyes out over that title). and then saying i will tear this girl apart and rip at her hope and break her until she absolutely breaks. and then she will become ultimate despair! this plucky average hopeful girl! i just have to absolutely break her.
which.
says more about monaca's ideas of what made junko than it does anything else.
it says that monaca honestly believed that junko became ultimate despair because she got broke bad enough that she couldn't recover. and then decided to have fun with it.
and i think it's also important that monaca chose komaru, who definitely did not want to hurt the kids (for most of the game, jataro excepted) because they were kids. which. fits with monaca's views of junko. who stepped in and saved the group of them.
beyond that.
monaca says she wants to make junko 2.0 to carry on junko's ultimate despair etc. in the world, but if we're really honest?
monaca wants junko back because she loves her and because junko is the only one she believes has ever loved her back. monaca took her grief over junko's death (the same way the remnants of despair did, if we're honest) and said no. absolutely not. she is not dead, she did not die, i will bring her back. as though it wasn't junko's choice to die. and where the remnants took literal pieces of junko into themselves, monaca mimicked her. and when nagito took her out of the wreckage, she was fully in on okay, i will be junko, then. it's an embodiment of her as much as a child can do.
but there's something about how ultimate despair, after junko's death, either committed suicide or tried to bring her back in whatever fashion they can.
i just.
hm.
#musings#danganronpa#junko enoshima#monaca towa#these thoughts are not solidifying as much as i want

What do you think people get wrong about Successor Komaru?
They make her too overtly evil junko 2.0 its like
komaru: blows up kids
komaru: i will now wear black and white and go on about despair and im craaazy
and its just, its lazy! it has no care for komarus character at all! despair isnt crazy juice! despair is a philosophy of nihilism mixed with hedonism mixed with zero impulse control, Komaru doesn't become Junko 2! she becomes obsessed with still seeming like a good person! succesor au komaru's need to be in a greater good sunk cost fallacy to make ANY sense where she digs herself deeper and deeper because she can't face what she did so she needs to make a good thing she did, she's not a monster! she's the hero! she...she saved them! she had to do it! its not her fault! ITS NOT HER FAULT!

Monaca Towa: Hogwarts AU
Monaca Towa is a Pureblood witch that was born on the 1st of April 1987 and started attending Hogwarts on the 1st of September 1998, being sorted into Slytherin House.
She was the result of an affair and was raised by her father and step-mother alongside her older brother but no one in her family actually liked her and always wished that she wasn't born.
She was also heavily abused by her step-mother who often used the Cruciatus Curse on her and eventually, Monaca decided to pretend to get disabled because of it to get some sympathy which worked with her father and brother feeling sorry for her even if they still disliked her.
Before starting at Hogwarts, she was heavily corrupted by her baby-sitter Junko who manipulated her into becoming her father's successor if both he and her fell, which led to her corrupting and manipulating a few other kids in her year with traumatic pasts to help her.
She almost started a Third Wizarding War but was ultimately stopped by Komaru Naegi and Toko Fukawa, and went on the run after her allies were killed.
She was on the run for four years before she was caught and eventually sent to Azkaban where she was subjected to the Dementor's Kiss as punishment despite Komaru and Toko's protest that she had been corrupted by Junko since childhood.
She has a Vine wand with a Dragon Heartstring core.
Her Patronus is a Red Panda.
Her favorite subjects are Charms and Potions.
Her least favorite subjects are Herbology and Flying.

Hello I know u dont usually do follow up requests but would u maybe do whats going on with Komaru and toko (toko was sent by byakuya instead of sneaking off like in canon) while Makoto is babysitting on nightmare mode? Or the reunion? Thank u so much!! Have a wonderful day :D
No problem, and thank you! (I try to do follow ups; sometimes I just forget or they get lost in either my inbox or my drafts.)
The main loose thread is the little underground resistance of adults, so I'm going to say, with the Warriors of Hope so focused on Makoto, Toko was able to lead Komaru safely to that base, as well as Yuta and Taichi. They're not having to battle the Warriors of Hope or face too many targeted challenges; just the incidental Monokumas they come across, which they're equipped to deal with. Once they're safe, their goal is to save Makoto and escape. Gradually, their goals shift to saving Makoto and saving the city.
(Ngl, if the adults weren't sure about Toko and Komaru, they are going to have a hard time with Yuta. He's endearing, but the circumstances are radicalizing them against children, and he has a pretty chipper disposition and high voice.)
They spend enough time together for Komaru and Toko's friendship (or more) to develop, and really all of them get pretty close, but eventually Komaru gets kidnapped by Monaca to help with the successor thing. (Shirokuma helps Monaca with that.) And the others spend some length of time trying to convince Haiji and the other adults to help save Komaru and Makoto. Eventually, Toko and Yuta leave to try to take matters into their own hands, while Taichi stays behind to try to help as much as he can within the underground base. (I'm picturing him frantically typing on a laptop while Hiroko beats Monokumas back with a lead pipe.)

Unnecessary lies aside, the other issue with Monaca is one the confrontation handles... Well, tries to handle, but results may vary from person to person.
The thing about Monaca is that after making her the most evilest villain ever, you can't then get any sort of catharsis out of killing her. This is the problem with making a child character into a 100% despicable archvillain. We talked a bit about catharsis with the 2-6 conclusion; The most fun you can have with a totally reprehensible villain is to see them get theirs.
That doesn't work so well with a tyke villain. Usami taking down Junko 2.0 in a big God of War magical girl fight was awesome. But it's hard to write a scene that feels triumpant where our protagonist beats the everloving shit out of a small child. That just doesn't work.
Further complicating the matter is that "Just fucking kill these kids" is explicitly laid out as the wrong choice in the big moral conflict itself. You can't do that and then turn around and kick Monaca's teeth in. The main hill that your story is choosing to die on rarely has room for that kind of nuance. If this is your big moral statement, you can't compromise it for catharsis or else you're shooting down your own message.
So you've created a villain who is utterly despicable beyond any hope of redemption, for whom only catharsis can be the story's end. And you've also created a villain for whom there can be no catharsis. Question. How exactly are you supposed to resolve this character?
Well. The answer that UDG lands on is to kick the can down the road. Monaca gets replaced at the 11th hour by a different, more punchable villain that we can fight, while she slips away to show up as the next game's big archvillain or something.
We get a bit of philosophical catharsis when everyone leaves Monaca under a pile of rubble and stops listening to her. But that's just part of the can-kicking. It purposely ends on a promise of more to come. Nothing is resolved, war between adults and children is still on the horizon, Komaru vows to remain in town until she can solve this, and Monaca goes full Junko Successor to gear up for her next appearance.
Which. Wound up fizzling out in DR3's rush to sweep everything under the rug and slam the book shut on this franchise forever. We're gonna talk about that in a moment, but that's the risk you take when you decide to push out the resolution to a future product. Sometimes it simply doesn't materialize at all.
But it ties into the other issue, the one of twisting things solely for the sake of having a twist. For the sake of making Monaca the most evilest character ever they wound up unwriting the interesting yet sinister villain they had and instead creating an archvillain of such magnitude that they left themselves no possible avenue to actually resolve the story satisfactorily. Sometimes, more is less.

things people should talk about more: how the initial plan in UDG was to make komaru the successor to junko. which komaeda was entirely aware of and orchestrated behind the scenes. which means that the entire plot was komaeda trying to turn the ultimate hope’s sister into the ultimate despair (aka make her a stepping stone for naegi). he only resorts to monaca at the end bc the original plan didn’t work out.
#like. that entire thing was komaeda trying to create something even more despairing than junko to challenge naegi#as a way to further his hope#and i think about that#who’s gonna tell him#huh#✁ ⇾ out.

Okay so considering they keep trying to foreshadow that Komaru is somehow playing directly into the kids' hands (despite not really doing anything that should suggest that) and given that Monaca keeps talking about making a successor to Junko - a wording obviously kept vague on purpose, even thought the obvious assumption would be that she herself is the successor, my theory is that she's trying to turn Komaru into the successor somehow.
It wouldn't make much sense, but it is the exact kind of twist Danganronpa would pull.

100, 98, 74!
100: Toko/Byakuya. You have better options for gayness on either end, and it's just such a miserable concept. She can do so much better. It's the same vibe as when flashforward endings put all your faves in miserable heterosexual breeding relationships and make the women housewives. I react to that being shipped over Tokomaru how most people react to NTR.
98: How rare we talking here? I feel like Despaircest doesn't really properly fit "rare", especially since it was mainstream af until the purity cult got harassy over it (becomes apparent when you start diving through old-ass tumblrs for art). Kaede/Tsumugi tends to be underloved for being so heavily made apparent in canon and the underlying toxicity of the reveal.
I guess the rarest favorite would have to go to Towashima. Feels weird to not have the answer here be a crack ship. There's like, what, around ten or so "this is absolutely ship" pieces of art, and not even a ton of non-ship art which is frankly insane. As for fanfiction, well see how much of the tag on AO3 is me. I found no results online for "Towashima" before I first used the name a few blogs ago, so I gotta give myself credit for coining the damn ship name.
74: I have so many unpopular opinions lmao, divided up across various segments of the fandom. V3 is fine (like, it's my least favorite in the series but still better than most media I've seen, which is a fuckton, it's just competing with its own franchise which is an unfair battle), UDG is the best work in the franchise, Towashima is heavily implied to be canon by logic and evidence, the dubs are trash, the tone and atmosphere of DR1 is superior to SDR2, most times people say someone was "wasted" by being killed off are completely failing to understand the point (in most full-of-death stories you know who will die by the fact they don't have an arc or just finished their arc, but that's not how sudden death works irl, the entire point is to portray death as tragic and a gutting hollow void that doesn't give a fuck about you finishing your arc), Komaru isn't remotely "normal" and that's the point + why she was selected to become the Successor, and more.
And of course, the opinion that the entire concept of an anti in the Danganronpa fandom is laughably stupid and absurd, the franchise constantly is doing things they hate, the only reason they're here is because they wanted to fit in with people and be a part of the popular thing and they're no better than any other poser.
