March 30, 2021 - White-headed Starling or Andaman White-headed Starling (Sturnia erythropygia)
Found in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, these starlings inhabit forests, grasslands, and agricultural areas. They eat fruit, nectar, and insects, foraging in flocks with other insectivorous species in trees and shrubs. Breeding between March and May, they build their nests from twigs and leaves in tree cavities where females lay clutches of four eggs.

Did you have “bedhead” that looked like the crest of a Brahminy Starling (Sturnia pagodarum) this morning? This starling has a wide range and might be spotted in India, Pakistan, or Thailand, where it inhabits a variety of forests and shrubland. It spends its time foraging for fruits and insects, often with a family group. It’s also known to imitate the sounds of other birds in its range. Males and females have a similar appearance. To tell the difference, look closely at the crest: males’ crests and hackles are a bit longer and fuller. Photo: JJ Harrison, CC-BY-SA-3.0 https://www.instagram.com/p/CAvKk_dA2HD/?igshid=tal21a10sqi6
