Song Review: Grateful Dead - “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again” (Live, June 19, 1989)

What worked so well on a Bob Dylan album didn’t necessarily translate to the Grateful Dead concert stage.

For Sound Bites’ money, “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again” is one such song - “Memphis Snooze,” I called it at the time.

Running about 10 minutes with a ton of lyrics and no solos to speak of, the number just ate up precious setlist time. And though the band clearly loved it, I did not.

Out as part of “All the Years Live,” the June 19, 1989, version finds Bob Weir singing with gusto and Jerry Garcia just as enthusiastically adding backgrounds. Their excitement lends itself to some sloppiness.

That said, this is a good version. But Sound Bites’ reaction to seeing the song as this week’s “ATYL” entry reminded him of hearing the opening notes while in the seats.

“Memphis Snooze,” again?

At least it’s not “Desolation Row.”
