3 Methods of Rebar Splicing
Nowadays, Rebar is used extensively for building construction. Rebar is the steel reinforced in concrete. Concrete alone cannot withstand the loads applied to it due to its low tensile strength. Hence, steel is used along with to provide higher strength and stability.
Rebar cannot be used to its full size due to transportation and fabrication limitations. It must be cut to form splices for its proper usage. There are three methods to splice the Rebar. Let’s have a look at these methods in detail:
1. Lap Splicing:
Lap splicing is the most common splicing methods. It is also very economical to use this type of method. However, there are some limitations of using this type of method. Lap splices may cause congestion at the splice location; making it difficult for concrete to pass through. In this case, it becomes impossible to use such splices. Insufficient splice length may also cause difficulty in making use of it.

When to use lap Splicing method?
Lap splicing method can be used under normal conditions when the members in which rebar is used has little stress to handle or the diameter of rebar is small.
Lap splicing can be used only for rebar whose size range between 14mm and 25mm.
This method should be avoided when the rebar space is small.
2. Mechanical Splicing:
Mechanical Splicing method uses a mechanical device for coupling two pieces of rebar. Some of the mechanical splicing techniques can be installed fast and easily while others require threaded rebar ends for coupling. This method can be used when it is not feasible to use lap splicing method.
When to use mechanical splicing method?
Mechanical splicing method can be used when rebar size is over 14mm for beams, 16mm for pillars and 28mm for other members.
This method can be adopted when the schedule is tight. This gives the benefit of precasting the components to speed up installation.
It is used when there are specific requirements for a project. For example an underground continuous wall.
To use mechanical splicing, all rebar splices must have same cross-sections. More than 50% similarity in cross-sections will also work.
When the rebar space is small in a member, mechanical splicing is best to use as it will help save the space.

3. Welded Splicing:
This type of splicing requires meeting certain rules and criteria. Welded splicing method is adopted if there are special requirements for splicing.
When to use welded splicing method?
Welded splicing method is used when the rebar having more than 36mm diameter requires lap splicing. The lap splicing for such rebar should be carried out along with welding of splices.
This method should be avoided if there is the insufficient capacitance of the job sites.
Welding can also be carried out when the rebar congestion is to be reduced and greater design moment strength is required.
For certain types of rebars having bad weldability specifications, this method must be avoided.
