Is this a show that would ever be viable for a full-scale production in this day and age? No, not it is not. But is it fun? Absolutely. The Gershwins' anti-war satire is absurd, hilarious, and a good old-fashioned night out. The cast fully leans into the charming and slapstick aspects. It's a familiar story with a bumbling and cartoonish businessman, star-crossed lovers from different walks of life, a fun bit part for a character actress of a certain age, and a weird little guy just doing weird little things. And so many tap breaks. So many. And I hate extended dance sequences, but you know, it was working for me here.

Victoria Clark had the audience eating out of the palm of her hand as she took on a fully comedic role. In her furs, funny hats, and padded brassiere to give herself a more buxom old broad figure, she milked that part for all it was worth. Owing to the more operettic soprano demands of her role, she came out the best against Carnegie Hall's unforgiving acoustics. Though ideal for symphonies or choral performances, Carnegie Hall is not really suited to musical theatre, and solo vocals often get lost, but she soared above the rest, proving you can be funny up the octave. But the real showstealer was Christopher Fitzgerald, who really excels in "weird little guy doing weird little things" roles. He danced, he bumbled, he ran around being a little gremlin figure. What would we do without character actors?

Verdict: A Lovely Night

Die jungen Leute stellen -völlig unerwartet- eine Show auf die Beine, diesmal eine besonders melodramatischen mit Kostümen, wie die Altvorderen sie in den fröhlichen Neunzigern trugen. “Mein Held” sagt Judy hier zu Mickey, während der Schurke am Boden liegt. Selbstredend dient dieses einem guten Zweck, nämlich Mickeys gutem, ehrlichen, amerikanischen Tanzorchester Fahrkarten nach Chicago zu finanzieren, wo ein Wettbewerb für den guten, ehrlichen, amerikanischen Tanzorchesternachwuchs stattfindet, der es ihnen ermöglichen  wird, gute, ehrliche, amerikanische Berufsmusiker zu werden, denn als Musiker kann man die Menschen ebenso gut heilen, wie als Doktor (wie es sich die gute, ehrliche, amerikanische Mutter eigentlich gewünscht hätte. Aber natürlich ist sie sehr stolz.)
