That was the moment when Reiko made up her mind to join the police. Simply joining the force wasn’t her only goal. She wanted to become a detective, get assigned to Homicide, and achieve the rank of lieutenant. Just like Sata, who had received a posthumous promotion, elevating her two ranks to lieutenant.

The court scene as well as Reiko counter argument against the defence lawyer was to me had to be one of the strongest scene from the novel. I like how Reiko tried to fight back against the people who tried re-frame the assault on her to actually be consensual and not rape. And it was an empowering speech as well, to her and the other rape victims as well as their families.

When it comes to rape crime, more often than not the victims were guilt-tripped into thinking that it was their fault that the crime was committed against them; it's because of the way they dressed, the actions that they do that attracted the attention of the rapist to them, etc, to try to undermine the severity of the crime committed by the perpetrator and shift the blame away from them. It's as bad as saying the police who lost their lives while doing their job was okay just because they already knew the risks.

So having Reiko fight back and argue that this assumption was wrong and that the victims were not to be blamed for the rape really felt so good.

The live action drama brought out this same scene a bit different compared to the novel, but it's still end up pretty good.

I ended up rereading the novel version of this, aka the Silent Dead by Tetsuya Honda. And seriously, this scene still hit me very hard.

Riddle Rosehearts

A former city boy who ran away from home after refusing to become a doctor like his mother was.

Actually works as a lawyer at a small firm in the nearest town. He commutes by car and it's only a 30 minute drive with minimal traffic (thank god cuz his road rage is abysmal) but he works remotely on most days.

Is often found at the town saloon (the community centre after you fix it!) holding tea parties with Trey, Cater, Ace and Deuce or at the local library.

Rumour has it he runs a backdoor business for specialty toothpastes.

Is often found at the town saloon serving his pastries for Riddle's parties or at his bakery tending to his mini garden at the back.

Plays basketball on sunny Saturdays with Jamil and Floyd.

The first character you meet, who was assigned with fixing up Ramshackle Farm. Shit talks your farm right to your face and holds no remorse.

Is often found at the town saloon at Riddle's tea parties or at the back on the arcade machines.
