Personal headcanon: Ridel was not really the most powerful WoL... Up until now, he had mostly been protected by others (much to his own dismay), and/or barely came out of situations alive. He had mostly felt pretty weak in comparison to his fellow WoLs, but that disparity had shone all the brighter when he could not hold a candle to Zenos in combat...

man i feel like yotsuyu was... so close to being great

if they had just gone from the angle of “shes someone who lived a life of constant abuse until she dove for the one way out she had and now she is willing to go to any length to keep the power she has. bc power = safety”

which would have made it all the more tragic when we see that her power, and thus her safety, is so conditional on her being considered successful by the empire.

any perceived failure comes with the very real threat of having all her protection  revoked. but its the only thing she has, so all she knows to do is dig her nails in and do all she can to hold on to it.

even if it means being a monster, even if it means serving the empire that oppresses her people, even if it means being a villain, bc the one thing she will not be is powerless, not again

and i feel like they are SO CLOSE to that... but then they take a sharp right turn and go “actually she hates all domans specifically, and gets satisfaction/pleasure from torturing them in particular bc...? idk just go with it”

also she makes comments abt how doma is so corrupt but they never actually... show us that? no one else ever addresses that?

FFXIV spoilers under the cut uuuuuuuhhhh I guess the entire thing from ARR to EW but it's mostly about EW stuff

Going through ARR, HW, STB, and SB and interacting with Elidibus as a calm, calculating, quietly confident Ascian with one of if not the most effective air of unspoken menace at rest and a fantastic nasty streak once he's finally been pushed to action — excellent stuff, A+, satisfying villain who remains empathetic without ever once apologizing or even stopping to ask himself if maybe he's fucked up somewhere

Going through the side stories and Pandæmonium and realizing that same Elidibus started out as a tiny dweeb who took everybody at face value and had a bubbly sense of wonder in regards to everything up to and including another person literally colliding with his skull — A++++++++ characterization I will protect him with my life I'm throwing the fight every single time I have to run SoS for the rest of my life I love this baby man and I love his doofy WoL cosplay

Heavensward and Stormblood truly made the interesting decision of putting non mandatory dungeon along the msq. Steel Vigil and Shisui of the Violet tides you are truly there.

Steel Vigil is baffling cause they could have placed the heretics and scene with Ysayle there. Instead of following an enemy npc for five miles from the river to the farm. She doesn't even fight the wol for murdering all her coworkers.

Shisui could have had the empire trying to gain access to the Shisui dungeon for treasture under the pretense of cleaning the place of monsters and "tempered". It would be a nice parallel to how Ala Mhigo was conquered. Surely Garlemald has some submarines! The wol is hired to free the ruby princess from her possession before the Garleans kill her.

wait does this dialogue choice not show up if your wol is male?

because i do not remember getting this with my male viera character when i was at this point in stormblood, but i def remember it when i first played through stormblood with my fem viera. AND the ffxiv script where i got this screenshot shows lines for a fem miqote, so like is it a bug or an intended feature?

(quest is "Sworn Enemies of the Sun" btw)

Got Hellie and Mellie through base Stormblood this morning with @rpgdotzip and YAY that's exciting, but I'll have some other commentary on that when I get around to uploading the screenshots for our adventures. I wanted to take a moment to talk about Revolutions the theme song for Stormblood. It was ODD to me how little they use the vocal version in SB. It's not my favorite Uematsu work, but it has some truly beautiful parts to it and I wonder why it was to underused. Anywho... I always get chills listening to Revolutions. My favorite bit is def the lyrics; "Tonight, for bygone sins atone. This night, you need not walk alone." It's sung so beautifully and the way the music accompanies it is as beautiful as ever. ♥

Although - let me premise. I like Lyse. I don’t think Conrad choosing her to lead the resistance was earned, it felt very fast and a bit out of nowhere because she’s not a leaderly type and the traits she gained were in Doma (he didn’t see that happen), but you actually don’t have to change anything major to fix or at least better it in my brain, you just need to swap around some dialogue. Don’t have him talk to you about choosing her, have her take the reins herself or with encouragement when he dies. thassit I think itd give her some je ne sais quoi
