Hilton Head Island South Carolina
Stoney Baynard Ruins located in Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island South Carolina is said to be haunted by its previous owners. The ruins placed on the National Historic Register in 1994 offer visitors an opportunity to step back in time.
Stoney Baynard Ruins
The former homeplace of Captain John Stoney a cotton planter in 1793, then onto the second family to acquire the property. That was William E Baynard. Legend has it that the Stoney family lost it in a poker game to Baynard in 1840. Bank records note that he bought the plantation from the Bank of Charleston in 1845 for $10,000.

As you walk around the property and the silence it holds today, one can embrace the history of walking where Union and Confederate soldiers once were. During the Civil War, the Union soldiers occupied it and shortly afterward destroyed the home by burning it.

There have been numerous reports of visitors seeing the ghost of Willliam Baynard. Some have said they’ve seen his entire funeral procession after dark. I enjoy historical sites such as this so much that one or more ghosts tagging along wouldn’t be a bother. After all, ghosts only like to be around good folks so that would be a compliment.
