The Ghanaian music scene is giving me the leverage and growth for my career – Crispen
Crispen was on Hitz 103.8fm on Friday, November 10 to promote his just released single “Happiness”, with Doreen Avio on #DayBreakHitz and the young chap really took time to market himself very well on the platform.
Tipped as one of the budding highlights at last weekend’s TIDAL RAVE in Accra, Crispen surprised patrons when he had the opportunity to perform “Happiness” live on stage.
As Zimbabwean, fusing into the Afrobeats conversation which is mostly a reserve of West Africans, Crispen was privileged to switch from doing RnB into the Afro sounds, courtesy, Sky Entertainment who signed him and gave him the leveraging to spark his career.
For influences, Crispen mentioned Stonebwoy, Kuami Eugene, Larruso, Fameye as some of his key Acts he keeps learning from to hone his career.
Crispen released his new song “Happiness” under Sky Entertainment, a Ghanaian music record label, and has been doing good with the single which came with a very colourful video to accentuate the mood of the song.
For Crispen, moving from Zimbabwe to getting signed in Ghana was one of the best things that happened to him and he admitted Ghana is giving him more exposure and push than he had back home in his country. According to him, he began doing music actively since 2018; but he almost lost it when he got discouraged along the way.
“I was left with just 2% of hope with my music career but Sky Entertainment changed everything and I don’t regret picking up music at all. Ghana is giving me all the support I need. And in my ‘Happiness’ son I even used Ga and Twi, as a way of aligning myself to my new found Family and home here in Ghana. Shouts to my people back in Zimbabwe as well”, he added.

Best of 2019: Dancehall / Jamaican tunes
In Jamaican music 2019 was the year of success for Koffee. “Toast” was an international hit and “Rapture” was huge as well. Here’s a list of 2019 Jamaican tunes that were the most relevant to me in 2019. I include “Toast” here because I didn’t include it in last year’s list. I also include Afro B’s “Shape Nice” because Vybz Kartel is on it, it is produced by Dre Skull and is basically a dancehall song. My number one non-Jamaican dancehall song would be “More Zessing (Zesser)” by Trinidad Ghost. The best African dancehall songs were probably songs by Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, and the J. Derobie song “Poverty”. Funny how I had never listed “Bawl Out” but it was probably the biggest 2017 dancehall tune this year. 1. Koffee - Toast 2. Koffee - Rapture 3. Vybz Kartel - Any Weather 4. Shenseea feat. Tyga - Blessed 5. Munga Honorable - Nah Mad / Lia Caribe - Na Mad Ova 6. Vybz Kartel & Squash - Beat Dem Bad 7. Shenseea - Trending Gyal 8. Afro B, Vybz Kartel & Dre Skull - Shape Nice 9. Busy Signal - Fat Under 10. Busy Signal - Got To Tell You + Stylo G feat. Spice & Sean Paul - Dumpling (Remix) Vybz Kartel - Drone Dem Vybz Kartel - Day Rave / Popcaan - Anything (Day Rave Riddim) Konshens - Bad Man Shenseea - Limited Edition Vybz Kartel & Spice - Back Way 2018 songs that stayed relevant 1. TeeJay - Uptop Boss 2. Spice - Romantic Mood 3. Shenseea, Konshens & Rvssian - Hard Drive 4. Shenseea - Shen Yeng Anthem 5. Konshens - Set It Up (Peppa Mint Riddim) 6. Shenseea - Position (Bashment Time Riddim) 7. Vybz Kartel & Shenseea - Secret (Refix) 8. Busy Signal - Stay So 9. Popcaan - Silence 10. Vybz Kartel - Real Bad Gal 2017 songs 1. Dovey Magnum - Bawl Out 2. Masicka - 10 Outta 10 / Shenseea feat. Boom Boom - Wine 3. Ding Dong - Fling Yuh Shoulda

Coronavirus gave me the opportunity to discover my other self - Efya Songwriter, Efya has expressed that while the COVID-19 pandemic came along with many negative effects, it gave her the opportunity to discover another part of herself she never paid attention to. She explained that for someone who had been travelling in and out of the country for the past 15 years, the COVID-19 period was “the first time in a year that I hadn’t left the country in the past 15 years or so”. Speaking at the #YHavoc Twitter Spaces session hosted by YFM, Efya shared that while a lot of shows were cancelled, the COVID-19 gave her the opportunity for self-reflection. She told YFM’s Winston on the Twitter Space: “It gave me the opportunity to go into myself and discover another side of myself. It made me stronger mentally because this was the first time in a year that I hadn’t left the country in the past 15 years or so. It was a lot of self-discovery for me.” The musician added that amid all that COVID-19 brought, she is grateful for her life and all those who continue to support her as well as the personal growth she has observed. “With everything that I went through, I’m just grateful for where I am now mentally, spiritually, physically. Also, because you know, a lot of people died,” she added. Efya is known for her many hit songs such as ‘One of Your Own’, Little Things’, ‘Best In Me’, among others. Among the many awards, she has won seven Ghana Music Awards, two City People Awards, a Best Female nomination at the 2014 MTV African Music Awards and an Artist Of The Decade nomination at the 2018 VGMAs. Best of 2020: Ghana music
In 2020 I kept following new GH music closely, as usual, and hoping that there would be awesome songs that could go really far. Probably the biggest GH song of the last few years is still ‘Akwaaba’ (2018) by Guiltybeatz. And of course, Shatta Wale feature on ‘Already’ (2019) by Beyoncé was huge as well. Sadly, none of this year’s songs seemed to have that kind of impact. There were some good songs though. The most played GH songs of 2020 at our parties were most likely ‘Putuu’ by Stonebwoy, ‘Say Cheese’ by Kidi, ‘Nominate’ by Stonebwoy and ‘Fa Hooki Me’ by Sarkodie. Personally, some of my favorite artists were Fameye and Gyakie. Fameye released a pretty good album titled ‘Greater Than’ and Gyakie also released an EP titled ‘Seed’. Those two deserve more attention that they got! One of the most interesting moments in GH music was #BringBackAzonto. Or it could have been! It was spring 2020, we had lockdown, nightclubs were closed. Sarkodie released ‘Fa Hooki Me’ and people started talking about bringing back Azonto, and soon some other artists also made a few Azonto-style songs. Initially I was pretty excited about it and hoped that the ‘Azonto revival’ would become real, and that it would bring some new energy to the table. Sadly, it didn’t go far. Maybe the songs were not that good, maybe it was not pushed seriously. Will there be another opportunity for a real Azonto revival in the future? I hope so, because that sound was original. But it needs to be done well. There were a couple of other ‘retro’ moments too. Lord Paper and Bosom P-Yung released a ‘borga highlife’ style song ‘Asabone’ and it seemed to be popular in GH, at least for a moment. The beat was sampled from Daddy Lumba. Then there was also #BehindDaHitz: Instagram 'battles’ between producers like Appietus, Da Hammer and Jay Q. They went through their massive catalogue of tunes, which include some forgotten GH hiplife and GH hip hop classics. DJ Breezy also released a song titled ‘Vintage Flow’ featuring Tinny and others. That song was dope but seemed to go under the radar. 2020 was also the year of ‘Kumerica’ and the rise of GH drill. The good thing about is that they are rapping in their own languages. The biggest track of the genre was probably ‘Sore’. GHANA SONGS - 2020 1. Stonebwoy - Putuu Freestyle (Pray) 2. Stonebwoy feat. Keri Hilson - Nominate 3. Kidi - Say Cheese 4. Fameye feat. Kidi - 247 5. Sarkodie feat. Tulenkey - Fa Hooki Me 6. Kidi - Next Time I See You 7. Larruso - Gi Dem (+ remix) 8. Gyakie - Forever 9. Killbeatz, King Promise, Ofori Amponsah - Odo Nti 10. Kofi Kinaata - Behind The Scenes Other notable tracks: Lord Paper & Bosom P-Yung - Asabone Efya feat. Tiwa Savage - The One Kofi Kinaata - Things Fall Apart Wendy Shay feat. Shatta Wale - H.I.T (Haters In Tears) Bosom P-Yung - Attaa Adwoa Yaw Tog feat. O'kenneth, City Boy, Reggie, JayBahd - Sore Dead Peepol & Rich Kent - Otan Hunu (+ remix) Fameye feat. M.anifest - Asem Gyakie - Vacation Gyakie - Nana Nyame Gyakie feat. Bisa Kdei - Sor Mi Mu Bisa Kdei feat. Sista Afia - Ofie Nipa Bisa Kdei feat. Gyakie - Sika Sista Afia feat. Fameye - Party Fameye feat. B4Bonah & AmakyeTheRapper - Unbreakable Mr Drew & Krymi feat. Sarkodie - Dw3 (+ remix) Kurl Songx feat. Medikal - Snapchat Kuami Eugene - Open Gate Medikal feat. King Promise - Odo Joey B feat. E.L & Pappy Kojo - Too Hot E.L feat. Sarkodie - Revival E.L - Azonto Gaza Strongman feat. DopeNation - Walahi Stonebwoy - Sobolo Stonebwoy - African Party Keche feat. Kuami Eugene - No Dulling Kuami Eugene, Shatta Wale & Samini - Ghana We Dey Kidi - Enjoyment Sarkodie - Bumper Tulenkey feat. Kelvyn Boy & Medikal - Ghetto Boy DJ Breezy feat. Tinny, Okra, Kwaw Kese, Dogo & Bollie - Vintage Flow Some of the most played Ghanaian songs were from 2017 ('Hosanna', 'Ayoo', 'Date Ur Fada') and even older: 'Adonai' (2014) and 'Go Higher' (2015). I personally tried to avoid playing 'Akwaaba' (2018) because it feels so overplayed. The most played 2019 song was probably 'Kpo K3k3'. Did I miss some awesome song? Let me know!
