the last picture is the bioluminescent variant of the threadfin dragonfish, stomiidae

Prior to fully rendering the two final environment concepts I posted previously, I went through a couple draft stages, from rough sketches to full black and white lighting studies.

I still think some of these ideas are pretty cool and may later go back and render one or two of them into full pieces. We'll see!

Also thanks to @ladyfish on the discord server for helping me narrow down what funky little fish I wanted my boy to be! He’s a Stomiidae or a barbeled dragonfish and he is currently trying to destroy the Shi Merchants for killing his family by sinking their ships.

Anyways the other day I was looking at pictures of stomiidae for like an hour and my question is why are all deep sea fish like that. I’m sure there’s a scientific reason I just don’t know what

if you could be a fish, which one would it be?

boops boops? Great name. coelacanth, a classic. some kind of ray a la moana? some kind of stomiidae aka objectively the coolest fishes?

Okay. If I could make my own fish, it would have the teeth and bioluminescence of a dragonfish, the whiskers of a catfish, the body of a worm-on-a-string but with the kelp-like-ness of a seadragon. (I guess I just want little shaggy bits floating off me at all points?) I'd be BRIGHT and COLOURFUL and have zero use for a brain! despite my above choices, I do love the round shape of the lobe vs. the ray-finned fish

i agree with whoever said merman yoongi !! it’s got me thinking fr, i feel like he’d be a shiny black color where in the sun u can see other colors in it ?? kinda like a crow ig

have you been peeking at my notes? 🫣 this mermaid will actually be more of a deep sea creature, so he will be totally black for camouflage (but iridescent under the sun)! i'm taking some inspiration from the deep sea dragonfish/stomiidae for his appearance and features! i feel like i made mermaid!JK pretty spooky, but this is how the stomiidae is described so just imagine that on a creature that's human-sized; "These fish are apex predators and have enormous jaws filled with fang-like teeth. They are also able to hinge the neurocranium and upper-jaw system, which leads to the opening of the jaw to more than 100 degrees. This ability allows them to consume extremely large prey, often 50% greater than their standard length."

Presenting the Stomiidae, also known as the Dragonfish!

Duo's nose scrunched slightly upon seeing the fish. Its face didn't really align with his concept of beauty, but he decided not to voice his opinion.

Something in the back of his mind suggested the stranger may have been using something called 'sarcasm,' but he sometimes had trouble recognizing it. Either way, this creature's numerous teeth reminded him of ferocious beasts he had tangled with in the past.

"How big is it?" He asked.
