Animal of the day: Imperial tortoise beetle! (Stolas imperialis) This fascinating insect native to Brazil is widely valued for its use in jewelry. Not much is known about the species' specific habits, but it can be discerned that due to being part of the tortoise beetle family, it has similar habits to other, more well-known tortoise beetle species, such as becoming discolored upon death and having a strong maternal instinct (something rare among the beetles). Hero inspo to go with lipstick lady beetle Rose: Tortoise beetles! I was thinking mainly for ladybug/turtle fusions but the colorations are fun so you could use them for design elements for other turtle fusions too

ladybug!Luka (who I imagine as blue half the time with the bug miraculouses because the steelblue lady beetle (halmus chalybeus) and sweat bees + metallic orchid bees exist) or Viperion/turtle fusion is the imperial tortoise beetle (stolas imperialis, i love me some metallic colored insects)

Marinette or ladybug!Chloé could be the asian spotted tortoise beetle (aspidimorpha miliaris, they seem to come in red or white/yellow coloration. the see through part would be so cool)

bee!Chloé could be a target or ringed tortoise beetles (Ischnocodia annulus and Plagiometriona phoebe, I'd also suggest bee!Zoe for this except the color and the rings really remind of stripes and yellow and stripes are Chloé's thing so it seems more fittiing)

Chat Noir/turtle fusion would be any number of green tortoise beelte but for aesthetics you could go with cassida circumdata, because they look really cool

I want you to know I am soooo tired rn and I thought you were talking about the hazbin hotel character and then I thought you were talking about the actual daemon…

No I find out it’s a bug and I’m absolutely wrecked

I know I say I’m into bugs but I know more about my local insects than anything else save for a few. The eye catching ones like this particular dude aren’t my cup of tea but I still think it’s very interesting 👍

tortoise beetle appreciation

tortoise beetles belong to a subfamily of leaf beetle. these beetles are often spectacularly iridescent and have the ability to change colour. some species sport incredible polygonal structures made up of liquid crystals on the surface of their shells that selectively reflect light. they have hard wing covers (elytra) that look like shields, which they use to clamp down tightly upon a leaf's surface, making it difficult to pick them off.

holy cross tortoise beetles (aspidomorpha sanctaecrucis) are native to southeastern asia, particularly in china, thailand, cambodia, vietnam and indonesia. these beetles reach 14mm and are highly active in the rainy season. 

target tortoise beetles (ischnocodia annulus) are common in panama and costa rica. these beautiful beetles are easily recognised with their black markings and shiny golden backgound. this is a neotropical species. 

golden tortoise beetles (charidotella sexpunctata) are native to the americas. adults measure 5-7mm. normally, the shell of this beetle is a metallic golden colour. but when disturbed, it changes to red, in under two minutes. the shell is made up of 3 layers that contain red pigment. the beetles can alter the reflectivity of this pigment by using microscopic valves controlling moisture levels under their shell.

green tortoise beetles (cassida circumdata) are found in peninsular malaysia, sarawak, sabah, kalimantan, bali, java, india, sri lanka, bangladesh, thailand, laos, vietnam, china, taiwan and japan. when tropical raindrops pepper vegetation in their habitat and sparkle in the light, these stunning beetles are perfectly camouflaged. the adults reach 5mm and are considered pests of sweet potato.

imperial tortoise beetles (stolas imperialis) are found in brazil. this is a stunning 6-12mm beetle with a pitted shell and intense blue colouration.

Procax Lichen

A curious magical lichen, Procax Lichen will not only grow anywhere, it is also very much able to move where it is growing, often to a place that will be incredibly irritating for a wix. It’s uncertain if Procax Lichen is aware of this and feeds on it, or if it simply does this by pure chance. At present, speculation is that it feeds on this, as those in areas known to be frustrating tend to grow bigger, brighter and in a wider variety of colours.

Procax Lichen will by no means limit itself to growing on rock and will grow on plants, other fungal structures, rock, brick, and metal with little sign of preference. In large enough colonies they have been known to lock hinges and cause doors to stick, and, generally, be incredibly frustrating. At present, only incredibly strong herbicides and fungicides are known to get rid of them.

Imperial Tortoise Beetle - Stolas imperialis

With only 6-12 mm in length, the Imperial Tortoise Beetle, Stolas imperialis (Coleoptera - Chrysomelidae), is truly astonishing by the intense blue color of its body and its elytral punctuation. This species, which is one of 181 that are grouped in the genus Stolas, is poorly known and only registered from Brazil.
