 — in lieu of flowers , send me your metaphor for sacrifice.
a package is waiting for you at the mail room. please retrieve it at your earliest convenience.
he frowns at the routine print of the academy delivery notice, attached with a fresh owl feather to the crisp parchment, marking its legitimacy. something for him that needed to be picked up? why? he can't imagine anything he might receive that couldn't just be delivered to his room.
he'd have to stop by later, after training.
notice is set aside, and muscle memory resumes the quotidian routine of preparing for the day. textbooks for his classes, coins for the errands he'd be running later, stock of laundry to see whether, and when, he'd need to fit it into his schedule. but in spite of his earlier, easy dismissal, he can't help the curiosity that remains in the back of his mind, trailing it time and time back to the conspicuous summons on his desk — stuck, like a burr, unsated until it's been met.
the old man almost never sent anything. save for the predictable quarterly letter, droning on about affairs back home and reminding him of his responsibilities ; but besides that, he'd never been the type to forward gifts or packages like some parents. self-sufficiency ran in the family blood, he supposed.
beyond that, there was no one else. anyone he could imagine might consider writing was already here.
right. after training.
. . .
the day passes slowly. not because of the potential package — in fact, it's not long before he manages to forget about it entirely. training is brutal, demanding ; exactly the way he likes it, but it has the additional welcome effect of banishing everything else from his mind. any worries, any frustrations, any anticipation. all that remains is him and his sword, and his next move, his next strike. lecture is boring, not one of his favorites ; but it's one he can't afford not to take seriously, so he doesn't let himself become distracted. and errands? more of a hassle than he anticipates. there's a hold up with the materials he'd requested ; there's additional costs the merchant adds on that they hadn't told him about ; there's a suffocating crowd at the market for discounts at the start of the week that makes it nearly impossible to navigate through.
by the time he makes it back to the dorms, the delivery has been put completely out of mind, and even his stamina and discipline are reluctant to drag him to the mail room to retrieve it.
but something tells him he should. one last thing for the day. or maybe: outstanding tasks shouldn't be left hanging.
there'd always been a saying in his household that diligence would go rewarded. perhaps not immediately, perhaps not even in a way you could see or understand, but it was a fact — the way ' you'd be sore after the first time you ride a horse ' was a fact, and ' aim here, and you'll cut your opponent's hamstring ' was a fact.
so, coolly, when he gets back to his room and finally opens the package, he wonders with a bit of irony: is this his reward today for that diligence?
he's not sure how he's supposed to feel.
but after almost a minute of just staring, he takes the large, pristine heater shield in both hands by the flanks and lifts it carefully up. . . and every time, he's surprised by how light it is for its size. but the sturdiness of its weight, the curl of his fingers into the grooves along its underside. . . even through his gloves, he can feel that familiar, intangible sensation start to rumble under his skin. that indescribable, primordial feeling, like knowing you need to eat, or the sense of some instinct telling you where to go.
it makes sense now why they wouldn't deliver it to his door.
but as to why this, why here, he's left with only more questions. obviously, it'd been sent by his father. did the old man think he needed protection? or was something going on back home.
without answers, he can only guess. for now, though, unreadable eyes pan over the relic's bulging lines one more time, its sloping ridges, the angular protrusion at its honor point — and he slides his weak arm through the hand strap, curling dull fingers against polished, reinforced leather.
foreboding sinks into his gut like deep lead — and stays.

felix has obtained the aegis shield.

10 First Lines Challenge
Rules: Share the first line of your last ten published works or as many as you are able to and see if there are any patterns!
Thank you @karama9 for the tag! I'm doing this on my fics' side blog rather than my main.
I don't have 10 fics (technically only have 5, only 2 are edited), so I'm gonna modify the rules a little for my two current projects and do the first 10 lines from each of them since I do long-form fics exclusively. That should get kinda close to the same amount of preview for y'all. I'm also skipping the prologue for reasons that are obvious to folks who have read my prologue/opening legend chapters.
Goddess of Secrecy - AO3 - Wattpad
…in a town called Eveningale Village. Eveningale was small, a farming village, nestled on the outskirts of the Deku Forest. Normally, people would pass by a village like Eveningale. What spared it this fate was because it housed the Knights’ Academy, the training grounds for the Royal Knights of Hyrule.           Young would-be’s would flock to Eveningale in the summer months, when traveling was easiest. The railroad and the roads were clear snow and spring melt, and the Field itself was filled with bright summer rays and cool moonlit nights. Cadets would arrive on foot and horse and rail and anything other means that would bring them.           Now, in the late months of spring, Eveningale was preparing itself for this rush. Shopkeepers ordered extra stock from Castle Town. Farmers harvested their spring crops, and prepared to take their animal produces in for the market.
Mark of a Hero - AO3 - Wattpad
...under the shade of apple trees. A breeze slipped through them, brushing over limbs heavy with fruit. The farmhands would be busy with the harvest here in a few weeks. They’d already plucked the bounty from the rows of plum trees in the field over, a bounty that was currently being counted in front of the house of the farm’s owner.           While the landlord bartered with a merchant, the wind continued through the orchards. A branch shifted, casting a noon beam down on a young man sleeping among the trees. His eyes squeezed tighter for a moment before he relaxed once more.           Like the farmhands, he too was enjoying his time off work. Though for this particular young man, his line of work was a touch more dangerous.           His green tunic was worn from travel, dark like the forest.
For patterns, I know what they are because they're intentional. The reason I skipped the prologues is because they start with "Legend speaks of a Hero," so y'all would have gotten the basically the same lines twice. But for the first actual chapters! They start with trees! We love a forest opening. Rural beginnings, my trying not to do floating heads and so some set dressing. Very short calm before the storm. I don't have slow wind ups, I like to get to the plot quick, but there's a moment of peace at the beginning. A very short moment, we got places to be.
I don't have folks I know in the community just yet that I know follow this blog and write, so I will leave this as an open invite to anyone who sees this and would like to play along, consider this a tag!

BACKGROUND.
tw: death, murder
born in russia to an influential family both politically and in the criminal world. dominika was spoiled despite the strict expectations set forward for her.
private schools, home tutoring, dance classes to teach her balance and coordination before she could begin pointe at eleven years old. along with etiquette classes she was taught defense, basic weapons and combat training, and things to do in the event of a kidnapping or other similar instances.
in a power grab, people were hired to take out the entire volkov family. unfortunately, they were mostly successful. as far as dominika knows, she is the only surviving member.
a close family associate who did both security and odd jobs for the volkovs came to the moscow academy of choreography which dominika had been enrolled in since she was young, only returning home for school breaks. the associate informed her of what had happened and insisted on hiding her until they could safely get her out of the country.
the academy helped hide her until they could develop a suitable plan, traveling and devoted volkov friends when rumors would get too hot about her existence or attempts were made on her life.
eventually, they were able to devise a foolproof plan through a matchmaking company - she would travel to new york city and be the wife a wealthy older man. dominika did not tell the others when making said plan that she had no intention of staying married to the man, but her private plans were simply none of their business.
she thanked the family associate and the academy for their above and beyond service and made her way to america. while she awaited her green card and other documents, dominika became a dutiful wife when she wasn't dancing for the new york ballet company. she even managed to get herself put into the man's will which, admittedly, was her plan all along.
normally, dominika tries to keep her hands clean when it comes to violence and disposing of loose ends but every so once and awhile it is necessary. her husband had served his purpose and was worth more to her dead than alive. she treated him well for their time spent together, it was only fair that she be compensated for that time and service.
she played the part of a grief stricken widow for the allotted time she felt she had to. further using her skills to continue building on the inheritance left to her by gathering information, playing the stock market, and draining unsuspecting target's bank accounts.
these skills were noticed by the burning gods organization when she'd tried, and nearly succeeded, using her tactics on one of their own. instead of retaliating, they offered her a position and she's been with them ever since.
dominika plans to rise to the top in the organization some day. she continues to be happy with her position in the ballet company, both enjoying dancing and performance along with the access it gives her to more wealthy members of society. when she's not on stage she transforms into who she needs to be to get a job done or spends her time finding ways to stay entertained throughout the city.
she continues to look for more information on the people responsible for killing her family and ways to remove the current family who took their place. out of principal and revenge, though she has no intention of ever returning to russia.
