Hi There!
You want some links?
We got ya Tik Toks and ya YouTubes and ya Instagrams,
We got Blue Skies and Spotifies, and a silly little Discord...
Oh, and this one might taste a little like Apples.
Oh, and I should mention our lovely photographer. (edit: no matter how many times I add our Tik Tok link, Tumblr removes it automatically, and it turns out that it's because it's automatically registering the link with "mailto:" no matter how many times I remove it, which even the Tumblr code itself knows is not a valid address, and thus removes the link. I will try to figure out how in the fuck to fix this. In the meantime, HERE IS OUR TIK TOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@black.cat.coaliti YOU WILL NEED TO COPYPASTE IT YOURSELF FOR BAD CODE REASONS.)
Check back here in the future for updates, upcoming shows, and FAQs. This post will change often.
Who are we?
I am so glad you asked. We're Black Cat Coalition, a local band to Orange County, California. We self-describe as "post-grunge experimental." You'll have to listen to a couple songs to see what we mean, or come to a couple shows, jam out, and really find out what we mean.
Oh-- wait, you wanted to get to know us. Well, then you'll just have to click that read more button for our individual profiles.

i’m raven, i’m the lead guitarist. my influence stems from a multitude of genres, with bands such as nirvana, RATM, pierce the veil, suicidal tendencies, 200 stab wounds, and so on. i’ve recently gotten super into a few local bands, such as laced and hatespeech. i grew up on punk, hardcore, emo, and grunge. i also have a soft spot for twenty one pilots, who were the first band i truly fell in love with. razz and i had ideas of starting a band in spring of ‘22, but it really started when moose proposed the name “black cat coalition” in the summer. i can also do backflips.
Tumblr media
I'm Razz :D I am the Bassist, lyricist and resident dyslexic of the band. I am a lover of all things bass with taking inspo from bands like Muse, Primus, and Cake. I founded Black Cat Coalition in the summer of 2022 with Raven. Fun Fact!! we got our name "Black Cat Coalition" after Moose showed their brother a meme with a lot of black cats and he responded with "what kind of black cat coalition is this D:"
Tumblr media
I'm Moose, I'm literally Moose. I'm the lead singer of the band, lyricist, and green. These people are my friends and they love that I'm green
Tumblr media
My name is Sage, like the plant. I've been playing drums since December of 2022 for Black Cat Coalition with influences such as Dave Grohl, Insane Clown Posse, and Steward Copeland. As a resident graphic designer; I did not create the Black Cat Coalition aesthetic, I did develop it and I'm the man behind the other social plugs. Fun fact, I became able to perform live after a year of practice!
Tumblr media
I'm Zo. I'm the rhythm guitarist, one of our vocalists from time to time, and one of our many lyricists. I also am the main Tumblr blog manager. (Yippee!) I was a late arrival to this band; everyone else here found me at an Asian market cafeteria at random one day and took me in like a lost kitten. I'm the oldest and shortest band member, but also the newest at their instrument. That said, I'm trained in vocal coaching, and my voice is definitely built for styles like jazz and swing. I grew up on bands like Evanescence, Green Day, Avril Lavigne, My Chemical Romance, and a bunch of other early 2000s stuff. Dates me, doesn't it?

Good timing too... we listened to it all. and the host interviewed the legendary drummer Steward Copeland (yes, the same guy who composed the PS1 Spyro games' soundtracks)

Bishop Jabez Pitt Campbell (February 5, 1815 – August 9, 1891) was a minister, activist, philanthropist, and the eighth bishop of the AME Church.
He was born free in Slaughter Neck, Delaware. Both his grandfathers were soldiers during the Revolutionary War. His father was Anthony Campbell, a Methodist preacher, and his mother was Catherine Campbell. His father used him as collateral for his mortgage. His father left him without paying his mortgage, leaving him to be sold as an enslaved. He ran away to Philadelphia where his mother lived. He was captured and enslaved for four and a half years. He was meant to serve two more years, but he bought them from his master.
He Stella Medley (1844-54). They had one child. He married Mary Ann Atkins (1855). She had four children. They did not have any children together.
He joined Bethel AME Church. He was licensed to preach by the AME church. Bishop Morris Brown assigned him to preach in the Frankford and Berks County circuits in Pennsylvania. He preached in the New England states. He became an ordained elder and taught and preached in New York and Pennsylvania. He was general book steward to the AME church and editor of the Christian Recorder. He was assigned to Trenton in New Jersey and Bethel Church in Pennsylvania.
After John Brown raided Harpers Ferry, he requested the bodies of two persons, Shields Green, and John Copeland, they would be hanged, by the Governor of Virginia. He condemned the raid as reckless, disapproving of violence to obtain freedom for the enslaved.
The Campbells had life memberships to the Board of Managers of the Home for Aged and Infirm Colored Persons. He gave money to Wilberforce University and Jabez Pitt Campbell College. Wilberforce University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity. The University of Pennsylvania awarded him an honorary degree.
He criticized Lincoln for the slow emancipation of the enslaved at the end of the Civil War.
He was part of the American Colonization Society. He was elected vice president of the ACS. He participated in the Colored National Convention. He addressed the Convention, but the details of his speech are not known. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Just listening to The Police's Message In A Bottle on the radio with the original drummer Steward Copeland on percussion, a symphonic orchestra and not Sting but instead three soul singers and it's so fucking awesome i think I might actually like The Police.
This radio broadcast is part of a late night show about the Weimarer Kunstfest that starts on Wednesday in nearby Weimar and this particular concert act will perform on Friday.
I kinda wish i had the energy and the funds to go there. I think I'd love it.

Great soundtrack poor game. Which titles fit the bill?
Great soundtrack, poor game. Which titles fit the bill? Bonus points if the soundtrack really is all that the game’s remembered for nowadays. In my case, i’d like to nominare Spyro Enter the Dragonfly, right? By now, everybody knows just how unfinished and glitchy that title really was, not to mention the atrocious load times. And yet, this didn’t deter Steward Copeland and other composers one bit with plenty of bangers to go around like usual. Aria - Smile versione portoghese
Tumblr media

I think another thing that really makes me feel for all these whaling lads is a particular sort of self consciousness that a number of them seemed to carry over how they fit in with the world and the other people in it.
“But how shall I describe a whaleman?” Asks Charles Nordhoff in his uncharitable whaling travelogue aimed at dissuading young men from going to sea. “His most marked peculiarity is a certain uncertainty in his gaze, which seems to betoken a lack of self-confidence. He moves along with a spiritless dawdle, which is quite in unison with his general expression of listlessness. He evidently feels but ill at ease in shoes and stockings. He speaks in an undertone, as though not judging it worth while to talk louder. His appearance is thoroughly unprepossessing and calculated to give the impression that he is quite the reverse of ‘smart’. This is the whaleman, ashore.”
This self consciousness of where whalers stand with others and with larger society manifests in their journals across those of all ranks and roles.
Asa Copeland, Captain of the Arab, hailing a clipper ship to ask if they could take home some letters, and worrying about how to assuage the merchant captain should he be “angry that his meditations were interrupted by the captain of a ‘blubber hunter’”.
William Buel, greenhand on the Wave sharing his anxieties on the first page of his journal of if he’ll be accepted on a whaleship and wanting to know what sort of man the voyage will make of him as he fled a sense of purposelessness ashore, to ultimately die at sea.
Silliman Ives, steward on the Sunbeam expressing surprise and dismay over a rumor the mate shared with him that Nantucket girls would refuse to dance with “filthy whalemen”.
Mary Brewster, whaling wife on the Tiger being met with her adoptive mother saying that she “would in no way assist” her and that “her house would never be a home [for Mary] again” if Mary proceeded with her plan of joining her husband aboard his ship.
J.T. Langdon, foremast hand on the St Peter thinking that his friends and family had forgotten about him as he hadn’t received any letters for years. Langdon standing over the graves of long-dead fellow whalers on isolated beaches and wondering if anyone even mourned them.
Joseph Dias, first mate of the Ocmulgee closing his voyage with “and all that saved me was a cat. If it hadn’t been for her I don’t know how I should have come out.”
Joseph Gelett, 3rd mate of the ship Brewster writing ‘do they miss me at home do they miss me at home do they miss me’ in a light hand at the top of an otherwise blank page.
So many asked ‘do they miss me’ ‘do they think of me’ in the margins of their journals, unsure of whether or not their absence was even felt among their family and friends.
Young men of so many different backgrounds and motivations that absolutely created moments of tension and violence, but also bound them together in a specific fraternity that came with the shared identity of ‘whaleman’. Engaged in an occupation unlike any other, living in a self-contained community that for the majority of the time was cut off from the society of others and the surety of the land for years. Whalers gammed with whalers, united in an mutual understanding of a ship so solid in its horrors, its brutal work, in the visceral closeness of sharing the space with so many others for such an extended period, and the strange camaraderie that could also come from those things/despite those things. And this was balanced against the idea that as far as the rest of the world was concerned, they were liminal men. Distant sons and brothers and fathers and friends and lovers who existed but also…didn’t exist, connecting with those left ashore only in the form of a letter written two years prior, or a newspaper report of a ship’s last known location several months old, until they finally DID come home (if they lived to see home). To a place they hadn’t been for three or four years and maybe hadn’t even heard word from over that time. To stumble out of the unique culture of a whaleship and reconcile where they fit ashore again after it all.
I think that’s why I find myself caring so much about them because—at least while at sea—many seemed so uncertain if anyone did.
