A night with Stephen K Amos
International comedian Stephen K Amos was the host of the Ealing Comedy festival which took place in July 2016 and it went down a storm. During his set he took his audience to different levels of humour with his open attitude and making jokes that were thought provoking and very relevant. His usual audience participation was on top form and his support to the other acts was admirable.
After the set had come to an end we were behind the scenes enjoying a Jack Daniels and coke while he told of how his career began and his past experiences.
Stephen, one of eight siblings, began his career path studying law and one day while he was on holiday in America he met a woman who said to him: ‘you’re really funny, have you thought about doing comedy?’
And that is how it started.
He thought to himself ‘maybe I’ll try this’ and went to his first comedy club at the next opportunity.
From this he learnt a big lesson, which was that you never know how far a compliment or a little encouragement can go.
At this stage in his career his feelings towards the scene is that nothing beats a live gig and that this is his ‘thing’ in comparison to some of the panel shows he has done in the past.
As he is well known for touching on issues that directly relate to him, like using his Nigerian accent, he insisted that an important factor to this game is to constantly provide new material.
Stephen said: “I did this gig last year and the year before. There might be a new audience but I still don’t want to repeat my material. Plus, I just want to keep it fresh.
“To me the beauty and the joy is having new material that can still relate to an audience.”
For this reason there was a deliberate attempt to stay away from material that related to the main current events in the news as other comedians may touch these topics.
The passion in his voice sounded as if he would make an excellent mentor and as he has never been asked, he pondered for a moment on the concept.
Stephen was very firm in saying to anyone who wants to take on comedy as a career that to avoid hecklers getting to you ‘you have to set the tone’.
He said: “When I used to do the club comedy circuit I would go on after a comedian that had been shouted at badly and heckled. The first thing I would do is tell them that I saw what they did to the previous guy, so please don’t do it to me.”
As the conversation moved on to family and specifically his parents he said: “We don’t speak about some of the comments I make during sets.
“My parents have seen me in all these years twice, but that’s cool. It’s just not their thing, which I totally get.”
The mood then shifted from an informal chat among friends to a sudden silence with an urge to say something just to fill the silence.
As the conversation began drawing to an end he let spoke of his plans about when and where the UK is going to get the chance to see him live in action.
Unfortunately we’ll have to wait until he is finished visiting Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Europe and then finally we will have the opportunity to see him do his thing in the UK.
