Chapter 97: National Interests
“Good evening, Weston. I’m Scott Dearborn ….”
“And I’m Rebecca Nash, and this is Weston News Tonight on WBN.”
“Our top story today isn’t what you might think.”
“No it’s not, Scott. While we were prepared to focus on coverage of today’s private royal wedding between Prince Stephen III and now-Princess Elizabeth, WBN has learned that the event was only one of several incredible events that have taken place over the past few days.”
“The wedding was the culmination of several days worth of drama and international intrigue that is shaking the very foundations of Oceana’s political landscape.”
“That’s right, Rebecca. What started as a routine drive to her final wedding gown fitting turned into a nightmare for our new princess. For details, we go live to Ryan Lively at the Weston Ministry of Defense.”
“When Princess Elizabeth got into her car on Wednesday afternoon for the drive to Madame Valois’ studio, she was unaware that the driver of her vehicle was an international assassin wanted for murder in 17 countries. The criminal abducted the soon-to-be princess and fled to San Rios, a small South American nation.
“Fortunately, Weston’s royal security team was able to track their whereabouts, rescuing Princess Elizabeth and killing the assassin as he attempted to escape.
“While Princess Elizabeth was none the worse for wear, security forces found evidence that the assassin was hired by none other than James Wellesley, son of exiled Westonian traitor Daniel Wellesley, who died after taking refuge in Corwyn.”
“As you may have heard, this same James Wellesley recently became engaged to Princess Grace of Corwyn, the youngest daughter of Her Majesty Queen Anne. As such, the web of responsibility becomes much more tangled, and Weston’s government and military leaders are anxiously waiting for a reaction from Varenna, where a formal request for extradition was delivered only a few hours ago.
In fact, many are questioning whether, if Queen Anne refuses to allow her future son-in-law to be extradited, there might be sanctions – or even military conflict – between Corwyn and Weston. So far, both governments have remained silent. It seems each side is waiting on the other for their next move.”
“In the meantime, Weston continues to celebrate the wedding of its reigning Prince Stephen III to our new princess, Elizabeth Howes, at the Marchand family chapel earlier today. We’ll be providing exclusive, in-depth coverage of there ceremony tonight at 10 p.m.”
“So now we know why the royal family scaled back the wedding once again!”
“That’s right, Rebecca. Once Princess Elizabeth’s abduction was announced, it became clear that the ordeal had an impact on our new princess.”
“But I must say, Rebecca, I am so impressed with Princess Elizabeth’s strength and determination. For her to take only one day to recover from such a horrible experience before getting married – even in a smaller, more private ceremony, really showcases her strength and character.”
“I agree, Scott. If anyone needed further proof that our new princess was up to the challenge, I think they’ve found it.”
“We’ll be back after these messages with more discussion about potential fallout as tensions escalate between Weston and Corwyn. Joining us will be Michael Sarrazin of the Weston Ministry of Defense and Shelley Bremmer, a member of Weston’s National Assembly and chairperson of the Foreign Relations Committee. So stay with us as we explore this potential crisis further.”

(All pictures stolen from IMDB as my elderly mother doesn’t need to have her visiting adult son pausing what she’s watching to take pictures.)
Whenever I visit my elderly parents my trembly mum has always saved (“taped” she still says; but then, so do I; old habits die hard) some horror nonsense for me to watch with her. I used to think I’d watch anything, but it turns out my mum will actually watch anything. As long as it’s on the Horror Channel anyway. Movie wise that is; otherwise it’s games shows and Judge Judy. Hey, you work that hard that long and you can watch whatever you want in my book. But, what I’m getting at is no one watched Feardotcom that night because they thought it would be amazing; it was just there, like mount Everest. Other than that it’s nothing like Everest, but it is a lot like The Ring (i.e. Ringu, 1988) but with a haunted website instead of a haunted VHS cassette (ask your grandad).
Loveable genre presence Udo Kier is subjected to spooky CGI in which a girl with a bouncing ball appears and he falls in front of a train and dies. BLEEDING FROM HIS EYES! Feardotcom has barely started and it’s already unoriginal, as fans of Mario Bava’s gothic confection Kill, Baby, Kill! (1966) would tell you, if you knew one (it’s the girl and the ball, not the train and the BLEEDING FROM THE EYES!) Turns out Udo’s not alone in his distinctive demise, luckily although BLEEDING FROM THE EYES! is common enough to have an ICD Code (362.81 : Retinal haemorrhage) it is unusual enough in the quantities suddenly swamping the movie’s city to suggest something’s amiss. A handsome but troubled and yet still dull cop (Steven Dorff) and a typically pre-Raphaelite beauty of a Department of Heath researcher (Natascha McElhone) team up to investigate. Is it an epidemic? Or is it the restless ghost of a serial killer’s victim seeking vengeance on torture voyeurs via a supernatural website which, once viewed, kills them 48 hours later via hallucinations of their worst fears. AND BLEEDING FROM THE EYES! The answer won’t surprise you.
So you get scenes of stubbly Dorff and fragrant McElhone investigating (and, wait, is this a romance I see before my NOT BLEEDING eyes?) punctuated by people being killed by, fair’s fair, quite inventive and not entirely unsadistic, visualisations of their worst fears. So the forensic specialist (Amelia Curtis) investigating the hard drives (“My God, it’s written in ghost-Java script!”, she doesn’t say) imagines lots of insects because a lot of people don’t like insects, and dies. BLEEDING FROM THE EYES! Dorff’s boss (Nigel Terry) imagines being an actor who stars as King Arthur in John Boorman’s delightfully British Excalibur (1981) but twenty years later is way down the cast in this shit, and crashes his car. While BLEEDING FROM HIS EYES! And so on. Purely in the interests of research (yeah, right; that’s what they all say) porcelain skinned public servant Natasha McElhone views the spooky site and the race is on to save her from her own worst fears and BLEEDING FROM THE EYES! And what connection does all this have to do with Stephen Rea’s preposterously silly performance as a serial killer Dorff failed to catch in the past, and whose scenes all seem to have been shot in one day? Questions there, like anyone cares.
Feardotcom is a bad movie, but a bad horror movie isn’t like a normal bad movie; it can still be entertaining, which this is. There’s the fun of rolling your non-haemorrhaging orbs at the clichés, the grudging tip of the hat to the imagination on show in the deaths, the little tickle you get when you realise someone somewhere thought they were making a SERIOUS FILM! here, the historical interest of how the Internet was perceived 16 years ago, the magic of Udo Kier, John Terry and, particularly, Jeffrey Combs being way more interesting than anyone further up the cast list can manage. And Combs is such a particular delight in this as a grubby apathetic cop, Feardotcom briefly becomes a better movie whenever he slouches onscreen. It’s still very far from good though, but still better than something as slickly dishonest as Frost/Nixon. And my mum? She said it was okay (but between you and me I think she nodded off. Bless.)

Oh, and hey, just in case Arrow Video hasn’t already made your day by posting the cover art for Unchained Melody: The Films Of Meiko Kaji, today they also announced via Twitter that they’ll be releasing a box set of the three New Battles Without Honor And Humanity films.
Meiko Kaji (梶芽衣子) appears in the second of these, Head Of The Boss (新仁義なき戦い 組長の首). All three filmes were directed by Kinji Fukasaku (深作 欣二) and star Bunta Sugawara (菅原 文太).
Here are the details:
In the early 1970s, Kinji Fukasaku’s five-film Battles Without Honor and Humanity series was a massive hit in Japan, and kicked off a boom in realistic, modern yakuza films based on true stories. Although Fukasaku had intended to end the series, Toei Studio convinced him to return to the director’s chair for this unconnected, follow-up trilogy of films, each starring Battles leading man Bunta Sugawara and telling separate, but fictional stories about the yakuza in different locations in Japan.
In the first film, Bunta Sugawara is Miyoshi, a low-level assassin of the Yamamori gang who is sent to jail after a bungled hit. While in stir, family member Aoki (Lone Wolf and Cub’s Tomisaburo Wakayama) attempts to seize power from the boss, and Miyoshi finds himself stuck between the two factions with no honorable way out.
In the second entry, The Boss’s Head, Sugawara is Kuroda, an itinerant gambler who steps in when a hit by drug-addicted assassin Kusunoki (Tampopo’s Tsutomu Yamazaki) goes wrong, and takes the fall on behalf of the Owada family, but when the gang fails to make good on financial promises to him, Kuroda targets the family bosses with a ruthless vengeance.
And in Last Days of the Boss, Sugawara plays Nozaki, a laborer who swears allegiance to a sympathetic crime boss, only to find himself elected his successor after the boss is murdered. Restrained by a gang alliance that forbids retributions against high-level members, Nozaki forms a plot to exact revenge on his rivals, but a suspicious relationship with his own sister (Chieko Matsubara from Outlaw: Gangster VIP) taints his relationship with his fellow gang members.
Making their English-language home video debut in this limited edition set, the New Battles Without Honor and Humanity films are important links between the first half of Fukasaku’s career and his later exploration of other genres. Each one is also a top-notch crime action thriller: hard-boiled, entertaining, and distinguished by Fukasaku’s directorial genius, funky musical scores by composer Toshiaki Tsushima, and the onscreen power of Toei’s greatest yakuza movie stars.
LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS:
• High Definition digital transfers of all three films • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations • Original uncompressed mono audio • New optional English subtitle translation for all three films • Beyond the Films: New Battles Without Honor and Humanity, a new video appreciation by Fukasaku biographer Sadao Yamane • New Stories, New Battles and Closing Stories, two new interviews with screenwriter Koji Takada, about his work on the second and third films in the trilogy • Original theatrical trailers for all three films • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Reinhard Kleist • Illustrated collector’s book featuring new writing on the films, the yakuza genre and Fukasaku’s career, by Stephen Sarrazin, Tom Mes, Hayley Scanlon, Chris D. and Marc Walkow
Currently set for release on July 17.

VALLETTA, Malta | Malta grants safe haven to rescue ship ending 6-day odyssey

VALLETTA, Malta | Malta grants safe haven to rescue ship ending 6-day odyssey
VALLETTA, Malta — An aid ship stuck at sea for six days will be allowed to dock in Malta and the more than 200 migrants onboard will be distributed among eight European Union states, Malta’s prime minister announced Wednesday, ending Europe’s second impasse in recent weeks over the fate of people saved at sea amid rising political resistance to their welcome.
Joseph Muscat said that once in port, the Lifeline Mission ship would be impounded and the crew placed under investigation for allegedly operating illegally — including violating rescue protocols and operating without the correct registration. The migrants, who were rescued off Libya’s coast, would be vetted to determine if they are eligible for political asylum or if they are economic migrants to be sent back to their countries of origin.
Muscat said Malta had no legal obligation to act since the rescue happened in Libyan waters, but said it was willing to act “before the situation escalates to a humanitarian crisis.”
The eight countries to accept vetted migrants from the ship are France, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Malta itself. It was unclear how many each would take.
While Muscat emphasized that the Lifeline case was unique because of the alleged violations of the crew, the refusal by Italy and Malta to open their ports to the ship — and the haggling among EU states over how to distribute the migrants — showed a hardening of positions as EU leaders head into a summit where migration policies are expected to be debated.
Earlier this month, Italy and Malta both refused port to a French humanitarian ship, forcing some 630 migrants to travel an additional 1,500 kilometers (900 miles) to Spain.
The fate of the ship operated by the German group had appeared resolved a day earlier when Italy announced it would take some of the migrants and Malta would open its ports. But Malta later said the ship was not welcome until it had a deal for all of the migrants on board. On Wednesday, Malta allowed the ship to enter its waters to seek shelter from rough sea conditions, before announcing it could dock.
Lifeline said that along with the worsening weather, some migrants were in fragile health.
Manuel Sarrazin, a lawmaker with the German Green party who is in regular contact with the crew and its supporters, said the situation on board the Lifeline was deteriorating. “Last night they were close to calling emergencies to evacuate two people,” Sarrazin told AP. “Doctors on board were able to stabilize them so the evacuation, which would have been very dangerous, didn’t have to take place.”
Sarrazin said the passengers are suffering from severe sea sickness due to rough seas. “They are at risk of dehydration. It’s been clear for days that the situation could get worse. There needs to be a solution soon.”
The standoff came ahead of an EU summit at which Italy will propose a new system for distributing migrants more evenly among EU countries along with ways to discourage economic migrants from leaving Africa. Italy and Greece have borne the brunt of the arrivals in recent years as people make the dangerous sea journey to seek a better life in Europe, often seeking war and oppression.
