I've looked through 23 pages on FF.Net of OC/Stefan fics, but still can't find this...
OC is part of the Sommers/Gilbert family- I think her mom was Miranda and Jenna's sister, who ran away from Mystic Falls?- and moves to Mystic Falls in the first chapter. Her father was Native American, I think, and left her with a ring/necklace that had to do with wolves. She arrives in season 1, or before it, I think, as she doesn't know Grayson and Miranda died until she gets to the Gilbert house and meets Jenna, Elena, and Jeremy. She moves into the boarding house until she finds her own place, and Stefan is her love interest.
(I think her mother is still alive, remarried to a man OC doesn't like. That's why she left to move to Mystic Falls. Also, I think she drives a truck.)
There was only a few starter chapters, and it wasn't super long...

First Choice
Damon Salvatore x Female Human Reader
Summary: Damon was never anyone's first choice and it had always weighed heavily on him. What happens when he finally finds someone who can change that?
TW: Naivety, bit of corruption, toxic relationships, emotional manipulation, poisoning.
Tumblr media
Damon returned to Mystic Falls with the darkest of intentions, he wanted to leave a trail of bodies and cause as much pain as possible. Damon wanted to free Katherine from the tomb beneath the church. He soon came to the realization that he couldn't accomplish it alone.
Damon had created some toxic, but somewhat functional relationships with Stefan and many other people in the town. Not a single person would miss him if he dropped dead and he accepted that.
Soon he would have Katherine back and everything would be fine. They would disappear off into the sunset and live the life that they should have been able to in 1864.
They opened the tomb and Damon couldn't stomach the idea that Katherine wasn't there. She had escaped and had lived amongst the humans for centuries.
Katherine knew exactly where he was and chose not to go to him. She seemed to find it easy to forget him and leave him behind like he meant absolutely nothing to her.
Damon found himself wanting to tear into something as he entered the Grill that night. He was full of rage and regret which made him a force to be reckoned with.
Then he saw her.
She sat at the bar in a pair of strappy sandals and a short white sundress. Her legs were crossed, her hair cascading down her back as she read from her book on the bartop.
Damon had seen her before, she was a friend of Elena's and attended the high-school with Stefan. He approached her slowly, taking the seat beside her and ordering a drink.
Damon watched her out of the corner of his eye, he breathed in the scent of her perfume and listened to the steady beat of her heart. A simple golden chain hung around her neck with a small cross that dangled above her breasts.
"It's Y/N, right? Elena's friend?" He questioned, holding out a few bills to the bartender as he set a glass of bourbon on the bar in front of him.
The young woman looked up from her book, "Yes, that's me," She said, offering a small smile.
"You have a beautiful smile, Y/N," Damon said, eyes flickering over her face.
Her cheeks flushed as she bowed her head bashfully, "That's a really sweet thing to say, Mister Salvatore. Thank you," She said.
"Jeez, Mister Salvatore was my father. Call me Damon," He smiled.
"Well, thank you, Damon," Y/N amended.
"Of course. A beautiful woman deserves to be complimented," Damon stated, taking a sip of his drink.
Y/N smiled, "What are you drinking?" He asked.
"Oh, just a soda," She replied.
"Another soda for the lady when you have a minute," Damon said, the bartender nodded.
"You don't have to do that, Damon," Y/N said.
"I know. I want to," He said.
"Okay," She nodded.
Damon sat at the bar with her for hours, he intended to compel her, but the charm bracelet around her wrist caught his attention.
"Where did you get that?" He asked, looking down at her wrist.
"Oh, I got it from Elena a few weeks ago," Y/N said, spinning the Vervain charm bracelet around her wrist.
"It's pretty," Damon stated, suddenly irritated when he realized that she couldn't be manipulated as easily as he thought.
"Is everything okay? You seem upset," Y/N questioned hesitantly.
"Do I?" Damon snapped.
Y/N fell silent, stiffening slightly in her seat at his abrupt reply. She startled easily, but she didn't pack up her things and leave like she expected.
"I'm sorry if I offended you, Damon," Y/N said softly.
Her kindness disarmed him, he had lashed out at her for absolutely no reason and she apologized to him. She was like a doe that had wandered into the path of a wolf, completely unaware of the danger that lurked nearby.
He could easily snap her neck right there without breaking a sweat. Y/N had no clue what she was up against, otherwise she wouldn't still be sitting in front of him.
"You didn't offend me. I'm just a little on edge," He stated, taking another sip of his drink.
"I'm a good listener if you want to talk about it," Y/N said, toying with the corner of her book.
He watched her for a moment, "Fine, I talk and you listen. No advice," Damon said.
"Deal," Y/N nodded.
...
Damon had intended to kill her that night, he was going to drain her blood and leave her body out for everyone to see. He was angry and hurt, desperate to feel something other than pain for once.
He could imagine it, pinning her body down and tearing into her flesh with his fangs. Damon wouldn't have been able to compel her so she would scream, but he could break her neck to limit the noise.
The town would have found out quickly.
A local youth who attended the church service every Sunday and volunteered with every second of her free time. Y/N was a person who would be missed, she had never done anything to deserve such a violent death.
The townspeople would have gone looking around for someone to punish. Hopefully they would have been able to take out a few tomb vampires in the process. It was a stupid move, but at that time, he didn't care.
Then he talked to her and everything changed.
Y/N was unreasonably kind and caring, she was naive to the real intentions of people around her and was often taken advantage of. As he spent more time with her, Damon felt like he was responsible for her.
Y/N was blissfully unaware of everything that was going on in Mystic Falls and it was likely to get her killed. He had grown fond of her and hated the idea of losing her because of her own cluelessness.
Damon told her about the existence of vampires, witches and werewolves. She thought he was insane at first, stupidly dismissive of his statement like she never needed to know.
Damon charged at her suddenly, speeding across the room and pinning her to the wall as he hissed in her face. His fangs were exposed and the black veins slithered up his face towards red eyes.
Damon had never seen her look so terrified but he was desperate to show her how easy it would be to lose her life. She was incredibly fragile and she needed to understand it.
Y/N stared up at him panicked eyes, her heart raced and her blood pumped quickly through her veins.
"I have the ability to rip your throat out and drain you dry in minutes. I could snap your bones like toothpicks and so could any other vampire in this town," Damon said.
Y/N looked up at him with glossy eyes, "Why would they do that?" She asked shakily.
"Because they can," He replied, cupping her cheek in his hand, "But I won't let anything happen to you, alright? I promise," Damon stated.
"How can you promise that, Damon?" Y/N questioned, "I-if it's really that bad out there I don't stand a chance," She said quickly, panicked tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Baby, don't be scared. I just wanted you to understand how easy it is for me to lose you, Y/N. You are my everything and I need you to be careful," Damon said, brushing his thumb across her skin.
"If everyone out there is like you, it doesn't matter how careful I am, Damon... I'm going to die," Y/N said shakily.
"No, I won't let it happen. I need you, baby," He said.
Y/N nodded, he pulled her into his arms and held her tightly as she sobbed into his chest. Damon rubbed his hand over her back carefully, keeping her close as she cried.
Damon cared about her and he was selfish with the things he held dear. He wasn't going to let Y/N slip through his fingers easily.
When Damon realized that Katherine had returned to Mystic Falls, he made a decision that could change everything.
It was an insurance policy that basically guaranteed that Y/N would hate him for the rest of her life.
...
Damon started to feed her his blood.
Damon had been slipping Y/N a biological agent that guaranteed her survival, even in the face of death. He added it into her drinks and she drank them without knowing what she was really ingesting. Y/N was a trusting person and he used her nature against her.
Every time he watched her sip on a cup of tea that he had prepared, he felt a pit form in his stomach. Damon never intended to change her into a vampire, but he wouldn't recover if she was killed.
Y/N grimaced, setting her book aside and closing her eyes, "Everything okay?" Damon questioned.
"Yeah, I've just had a crazy headache for the last couple days. Nothing seems to help," She said, opening her eyes and looking up at him.
"Sorry to hear that. Do you want to go lay down? Try to sleep it off?" He questioned, pouring some bourbon into a glass.
"No, I'll be okay. Can you sit with me for a bit though?" Y/N asked, holding her hand out.
He made his way over and took her hand, "Anything for you, my love," Damon smiled. He sat down beside her and pressed a gentle kiss to her knuckles, brushing his thumb across her skin.
"I guess I have to drive you home soon, huh?" He said, she nodded.
"My parents have been wondering where I've been getting off to lately," Y/N said.
"Have you told them about me?" Damon asked, intertwining their fingers as his other arm settled along the top of the couch behind her.
"Not yet, but I'd like to," Y/N replied.
"I'd love to be your controversially older boyfriend," Damon smiled.
Y/N smiled back, leaning in and pressing her lips to his in a gentle kiss. Damon moved his lips against hers, his arm slid down from the back of the couch to wrap around her waist. He pulled her body closer to himself, deepening the kiss as his hand settled on her side.
"Well, isn't that sweet," Someone said.
Y/N pulled away, looking up to find Katherine standing in front of them. Damon stood up quickly, shifting to stand in front of Y/N.
"What are you doing here, Katherine?" Damon questioned.
"I came to see Stefan, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to meet my replacement," Katherine smiled.
"She's not your replacement, Katherine," Damon snapped.
"Did he tell you that he's been hung up on me for almost 150 years? He wouldn't have even come back to Mystic Falls if he wasn't trying to save me," Katherine said.
Damon charged at her, pinning her back against the wall as she stared up at him with that infuriating grin.
"I should kill you right here," He growled.
"Damon, let her go," Y/N said, standing up from the couch.
"Stay back," He snapped.
Y/N stopped a few steps away from them, "Damon, it's okay," She said.
His shoulders relaxed against his will, his body weight easing off of Katherine slightly. She scoffed, pushing him away from her easily and sending his body flying across the room. Damon collided with the wall, crashing into a table before falling to the floor.
Y/N moved towards him and he held up a hand, "Stay there. Don't want you to get hurt," He said, voice strained as he pulled a large wooden splinter from his side.
"Are you okay?" Y/N asked.
Katherine suddenly appeared behind the young human, "He's fine, but you on the other hand," Katherine said.
Dark veins slithered up her face and her eyes turned red, fangs protruding sharply from her gums. Katherine grabbed onto Y/N and buried her fangs into the human's neck. Y/N let out a cry and Damon quickly shot up from his spot on the floor.
Katherine pulled away suddenly, snapping Y/N's neck and dropping her body onto the floor before Damon could get to her.
"NO!" Damon yelled, falling to his knees beside her. He gathered Y/N's body into his arms, holding her close to him as he looked up at Katherine.
"If I didn't hate you before, I hate you now," He snapped, voice wavering as his eyes glossed over with tears.
"Oh, how will I ever recover?" Katherine questioned sarcastically, wiping the blood from her lips.
Damon looked down at Y/N as Katherine made her way out of the house. He prayed to a god he didn't believe in that Y/N wouldn't end up like him, but he couldn't let her go.
Call it selfish or possessive, but he needed her and he was desperate enough to ruin her life. Damon sat on the floor, holding her lifeless body for hours. He was beginning to question if his blood hadn't been enough to bring her back.
Stefan made his way into the house, closing the door behind himself. He froze when he smelled the blood, Stefan made his way into the living room and saw the broken table before he noticed Damon on the floor.
"Damon, what happened?" Stefan asked, rushing over to them.
"Katherine killed her," Damon mumbled, silent tears rolling down his cheeks.
"Damon, I'm so sorry," Stefan said softly, kneeling down on the floor beside them.
"She came to see you, but Y/N was here," Damon said shakily, pulling her body closer to himself.
"I can help you bury her," Stefan offered, hand settling on his brother's shoulder.
Damon shook his head, "She's going to be fine... I've been giving her my blood," Damon said.
"What? Why?" Stefan asked.
"Katherine came back and I couldn't take the risk," Damon stated, resting his chin on the top of her head as he sniffled.
"Damon, did she know?" Stefan asked.
"No, she wouldn't have taken it if she knew," Damon said.
Stefan took a breath, "I-I'm glad that she's going to be okay, but this isn't right, Damon. She should have a say in what happens to her," Stefan said gently.
"I don't care. I don't care what she wanted. I need her here," Damon snapped.

“You know this is nice” I took my head off Stefan’s chest and looked up at him with a big smile. “What’s that?” He questioned rubbing my arm and looking away from the Tv. “Just- us, I feel like a lot of the time it’s never just us together and no one else” I told him, my heart pounding against my chest. He always made me feel like fireworks were going off inside of me. “Yeah it is nice- I love spending time with you” Stefan nodded, his smile widening on his gorgeous face. “Me too” I breathed as I leant closer to his face.
Stefan met me half way and kissed my lips gently. We pulled away looking at each other before like magnets we attracted together again. The kiss was more hungry now and I moved onto his lap without breaking it.
Ding dong
I sighed pulling away from him sitting up straight. “I’ll get it, I’ll be right back” he whispered kissing me quickly before picking me up by the hips and putting me back in my original place. I watched him walk out the living room towards the door. I rested my head on my arm beginning to become a bit dishearten with all the distractions all the time. A few minutes later Stefan walked in with Elena by his side. Her eyes looked red but she had a big smile on her face.
It took everything inside of me to not roll my eyes at her presence. She was always just turning up here, even though her and Stefan broke up months ago. She was definitely smug. “Erm- Elena is here, she’s just gonna stay here for the night while everything at home blows over” Stefan explained to me with a light smile. He knew exactly what was going through my head. We’d spoken about Elena showing up before, he said he’d work on it but time and time again he failed to prove that.
“Oh” I replied burning holes inside of him with my eyes. He awkwardly came to sit back down but didn’t resume his place he sat the other side of me so Elena could sit next to him too. “Yeah- it’s just really hectic there right now” she nodded to me. “What is exactly hectic” I blinked not believing her for a second. Elena was well known for being a drama queen. Everyone knew it. “It’s hard to explain but I just felt so alone there- you know?” She nodded to me, really laying it on thick.
“You do have friends though right? So why not hang out with them instead of your ex boyfriend” I raised my eyebrow moving up to the end of the sofa because I didn’t want to be right next to Stefan right now. “Y/n” he whispered widening his eyes. “Me and Stefan ARE friends- and so are me and you so why wouldn’t i come here?” He questioned with a pout. Pretending that she was emotionally hurt by what I’d said. To be honest she must have been a little confused because I’d never confronted her before.
“Y/n?” I heard behind called from the hall way. We all turned around seeing Damon peeping his head round the corner. He almost made me laugh his stance was so unnatural. I knew what he was doing. “You got a second?” He called out with a simple smile on his face. “Yeah I’ve got a few” I huffed getting up off the sofa and leaving them to it. I followed Damon down the hallway and up the stairs before he finally looked at me. We both couldn’t hold in our laugher any more and burst out holding our stomachs.
“I heard Elena was here” he finally said having to wipe a tear off his face. Damon pushed open his bedroom door as I sighed. “Yep” “I thought you were going to speak to Stefan about it?” “I did, he clearly didn’t listen- in one ear and out the other huh” I rolled my eyes flopping onto his bed. “Did he bring me up when you spoke?” Damon asked slowly, while sitting down on his bed. I rose to look at him. “Of course he did, he told me I needed to stop spending so much time with you when I’m here to see him” I explained biting my lip.
“Well? What did you say?”. I looked at him with a grin trying to hold my laugh in. “I asked him to review all the times I’d left him to come speak to you- and reminded him he wasn’t alone when I did”. Damon chuckled shaking his head. “He’s an ass sometimes- he’ll be furious about this” “I don’t care” i quickly replied and shrugged my shoulders. “It’s not like he listened to me, why should I listen to him” “I know that- I was just making sure you knew that” he tilled his head to the side. “Come on” I sniggered into my hands. “When would I not defend myself”.
“I suppose you do back yourself pretty well” he agreed nodding his head while staring at the door. “Why can’t I hang out with my friend- he claims Elena is his friend”. “Put it behind you while you can” Damon suggested giving me a sympathetic smile. “I don’t know if there’s- any point” I told him in a faint whisper, my eyes began to fill up. “I’m getting tired of the same old shit and no change”. Damon outstretched his arm and lifted my head up “don’t talk like that, he loves you and you love him- it’s not always a smooth ride sometimes bumps occur and some are bigger than others”.
“Since when were you so good at advice” I laughed gently as a tear rolled down my cheek. He wiped it away before it could even stain my face. “Since my brother actually got a girlfriend I get on with and I want to stick around” he replied pulling back now. “Thanks Damon” I gave him a little nod. “Come on, you hungry because I fancy picking up a pizza?” He jumped up off the bed waiting for my answer. “Oh I could so eat a meat feast right now” I exclaimed, rubbing my hands together and getting up to join him standing.
“Great, I’m driving though- my cars better than yours” “Oi! You have compulsion you can get whatever you’d like- I have to pay for things” I pointed at him with a joking smile slapped on my face. “If you wanted a new car you should have told me, I’ll compel you one” Damon’s face showed he was joining in with the joke but I know that if it came down to it he would compel me anything I wanted. We got to the bottom of the stairs and I began putting my jacket on. “Where are you going?” I heard Stefan thunder as he entered the hall way.
“We’re going to get pizza do you…
…you’re not going anywhere with him” his eyes darkened. “Excuse me” I jerked my head back and my eyebrows darted inwards. “If you want pizza WE will go and get pizza” “and will we be taking elenas car?” I folded my arms and slammed my eyebrows down so he knew how pissed off i was. He didn’t reply so I began to open the door. “Can I speak to you please” he tutted and he grabbed hold of my wrist pulling me outside before slamming the door shut. He didn’t grab me hard, it was quite gentle actually. He led me to where we were.
However I was still pissed off. “What have I said about spending time with him you’re here to see me!” Stefan muttered folding his arms too. “Exactly Stefan! I’m here to see you and yet again Elena is here- I mean you wanna play this game what have I said to you about her random appearances!” I answered him clenching my fists. “Y/n if you can give me a way to turn her away while she’s crying on my doorstep then please explain!” He came back with but I was too angry to have any sympathy for him.
“You tell her you’re busy! You tell her you haven’t spent any alone time with me in weeks! You tell her I am your priority as your girlfriend! That my feelings are what you consider not hers!” I enraged with wide eyes and fists down by my hips. He went to open his mouth but I cut him off. “I’m so tired of it Stefan” “of course you’re my priority but me and Elena are friends! I can’t disregard her feelings because you’re insecure” he fired back at me. My eyebrows raised and I felt my heart drop. In all honesty Stefan too looked taken back, he looked sorry as soon as he said it. But it was too late.
“This isn’t about me being insecure. This is about spending time with me but don’t worry about having to do that anymore, we’re done” I shook my head taking a step back. I didn’t even raise my voice because I was so hurt at his comment. “No y/n- I didn’t mean that i didn’t want this” he shook his head putting a hand to his forehead. “I will not be a second priority- if you love spending so much time with her make her your girlfriend AGAIN”.
With that I opened the door. Damon stood there and quickly moved his hand to his chin as if he was thinking about something. He had obviously been listening. I let a small laugh tumble out my mouth at him which just made my eyes prick even more. “Ready?” “Y-yeah” he nodded as if he didn’t expect me to ask him that. “Y/n…” Stefan called out but I simply turned on my heels and walked past him. Damon vamp ran to catch up with me waiting by his car. “Are you okay?” “No but pizza will fix that” I smiled gently. Doing everything in my power to not cry.
“I can’t argue with that” he nodded watching me get into the car. “Seriously though y/n” he sighed closing his own door. “I’m sorry I’m not gonna be your sister-in-law” I put my lips together. “I don’t think that’s the end, there’s too much love for it to end like that” he shook his head adamantly. “Well- for now… it’s done, I don’t regret anything I did or said, I don’t deserve to be spoken to like that” “no y/n, you don’t” he shook his head seriously.
He turned on his car and began reversing back. I didn’t notice he was going too far until I heard the smash of a lightbulb. “Oops” Damon blinked looking at me in the mirror. I turned around to see elenas car having been rear ended by Damon’s. Damon was a good driver, that was done on purpose. I looked back at him and we both burst out laughing yet again as he drove off. “I suppose we better eat our pizza in” Damon raised an eyebrow at me. I nodded in agreement putting my lips together before fiddling with my hands.
We had quite a nice evening together in all honesty. Damon was hilarious and really good company. He made me laugh so often the memory of me and Stefan started to drift away. The alcohol we got in the grill afterwards was definitely was a contributing factor too. And eventually when it was getting really late, Damon took me home.
“Thank you- for everything- not just tonight but over these past months” “that’s what friends do y/n” he smiled warmly. “Promise me we will stay friends even though you aren’t with my brother anymore” “I was hoping you’d say that” I nodded leaning into him for a hug. Damon wrapped me up in his arms as if I was a present and let out a deep exhale. “It’ll all work out y/n” he nodded as I pulled away and opened his door. “Get home safely” I told him with a finger out, it was a warning. Damon didn’t drive off until I was inside my house. And I waved him off as I closed my door, pressing my back against it I smiled.
I walked up to my room and opened my door. A shadowy figure was sat on my bed staring out the window. My heart stopped and my body froze. I wrinkled my forehead trying to see who it was. Before the man faced me. I sighed turning the light on. “Sorry…” Stefan flicked his eyes up at me. “Were you trying to kill me via heart attack” I questioned raising my eyebrow and closing the door because if he came in through the window he could use it to leave again. “That’s not funny” “do you see me laughing?” I jerked my head at him while putting my bag on my dressing table and taking everything out. Putting it back where it belonged.
“What do you want Stefan? Shouldn’t you be entertaining Elena” I asked with my back towards him. I looked at him in the mirror and could see he was holding whatever he wanted to say back. He took in a deep breath before saying “I set her home- in her damaged car may I add” he raised an eyebrow at me. “I don’t know what you’re talking about” I folded my arms turning back around to him, but my face had a smirk on it. “Why’d you decide to do that- you’re free to hang out with her as much as you want now”.
“I realised what you saw- she wasn’t coming to hang out with me out of friendship, she was doing it to get in between us” Stefan answered looking up at me. “How’d you figure that one out” I rolled my eyes. “After she was done explaining why we weren’t good for each other she then tried to make a move on me- said you were now out of the way” he shook his head pouting. As if he was disgusted by her behaviour. I swallowed and then went to join him on the bed.
“What else did she say about me?” “Y/n, I love you and therefore for that reason I don’t want you to ever hear what she had to say in that conversation” he replied. I exhaled deeply before putting my head on his shoulder. “I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you- that I didn’t tell her to leave sooner- that it took you breaking up with me for me to realise what she was doing” he explained to me, putting his head against mine. “I guess sometimes I can be a bit blinded by people” “well I’ve said it before, you’re too nice for your own good Stefan Salvatore” I giggled bringing my head back up so I could look at him.
“I’m also sorry for what I said earlier- I don’t think that about you at all” “I know- I saw it in your face- I was just to angry and hurt to forgive you then” I shrugged chewing my cheek. “Then?” He quizzed making me smiled. “It’s not gonna be that easy” I chuckled into my hand. “How about, you forgive me next week on the trip I’ve planned for us? Just us? Seven days- away from any distractions or drama” he smiled bringing a hand up to my cheek. “Hm that will depend on where you’re taking me” I tilted my head smirking. “It’s a surprise- but I’ll give you a clue, you’ll need your passport” he wiggled his eyebrows.
“Mm okay- but I’m only coming because I’m intrigued” I laughed, Stefan smiled at me running his thumb across my cheek. “Will you take me back beautiful?” He whispered pulling his head closer to mine. “As long as you promise to never speak down to me like that or make me a second priority ever again” i reminded him. Stefan nodded leaning in to kiss me.
“I promise” he whispered against my lips.

After practice, I headed straight to my shift at the hospital - an internship I got thanks to Ms McCall.
I was eternally grateful. Not because I had an affinity for medical care, but because a girl needs to eat. And nowadays I would rather suck my blood from a bag rather than a jugular; morality and all that.
The boys shot me a text saying that they were going to pick me up when I was done so we could continue last night’s target of finding the body, or at least just Scott’s inhaler - collateral damage.
I easily spotted Stiles’ Jeep, skipping over to hop in after watching Stiles kick Scott into the backseat.
“Man, that’s so unfair! Why does she always get to ride shotgun?” Scott protested, now sulking in behind us.
When I got in Stiles put his hand on the headrest of my seat to turn back to Scott, “Because it’s her seat.”
I stayed silent, my satisfied smile spoke for me.
My seat. It truly was. I was in this passenger seat more than anyone else so we dubbed it so. It was such a known rule that Stiles had even started to enforce it.
As we drove, Scott noticed me keeping my bag securely on my lap, rather than chucking it to him.
“What’s in the bag?” he pointed to my heavy-looking, extremely full bag.
‘Dinner,’ I wanted to say. But I didn’t. “Oh, just homework,”
Then Stiles looked over too, “God, your teachers must hate you.”
~
“I don’t know what it was.”
Me and Stiles wanted to go over Scott’s sudden, unnatural aptitude for lacrosse.
“It’s like… I had all the time in the world to catch the ball.” It seemed as if it didn’t make sense to him either.
“And that’s not the only weird thing…” his tone almost sounded worried, meanwhile Stiles was just intrigued. “I can hear stuff I shouldn’t be able to hear… smell things.”
“Smell things? Like what,” I inquired with a short laugh - I was trying to make light of the situation, but the more he spoke the less funny it became. Maybe it was all just placebo after thinking he got bit by a wolf, that’s what I’d go with.
Scott sniffed the air, “Like the mint mojito gum in Stiles’ pocket.”
Stiles scoffed, reaching down to prove him wrong, “I don’t have any mint mo-” and there it was. The half-wrapped stick of gum lay on his palm.
“Ew,” I muttered, trying to divert my feeling of unease.
“I’m scared that I’ve got some kind of infection from the bite or something,” Scott rambled like he was scared he was dying, although he seemed far from it, “like, what if my body is just flooding itself with adrenaline before I go into shock!”
Noticing the smirk grow on Stiles’ face as I waited for his witty remark.
“You know what, I actually think I’ve heard of this,” he stated as if he was suddenly a biology expert. Scott looked over with hope.
“It’s a specific type of infection,” his hand on his hips as he stopped in his tracks, feigning seriousness.
“Are you serious?” Scott questioned, knowing it was probably one of his jokes, but he was too desperate to care.
“Yeah,” Stiles nodded and I rolled my eyes, obliging him since I was curious about where this was going. “It’s called… lycanthropy,” he stated solemnly.
I fought the urge to sigh, or even laugh, but I waited for Scott’s reaction first. Seems like we were on the same wavelength here… except my concerns were a little more real.
“What’s that?” Scott asked, his tone building in worry, “Is that bad?”
“Oh yeah,” Stiles agreed quickly, shaking his head, “the worst.”
Scott got just a little more pale as Stiles carried on. “But, only once a month.”
“Once a month?”
“Mhm,” I stepped in, donning the same earnest expression as the boy to my left, “on the night of the full moon.” I felt Stiles’ eyes travel to me and out of the corner of mine I caught his smirk, a silent communication as to what we would do next.
We turned back to Scott and howled in sync, I put my hands around my mouth to amplify the dramatics before we both burst out laughing at Scott’s unimpressed look, him moving forward to push us.
“Not funny, guys, there could be something seriously wrong with me!” Scott stomped on the dry leaves and we continued walking.
“I know! You’re a werewolf!” Stiles put his hands up and growled like a monster.
Again, Scott’s only reply was a glare. “Okay, obviously I’m kidding.”
“I’m not,” I mumbled softly toward the ground, but they both turned around and questioned if I said something.
“What?”
“Nothing,” I looked up and shook my head innocently.
“Look,” Stiles always tried to lighten the mood, “just saying, if you see me in shop class trying to melt all the silver it’s ‘cause Friday’s a full moon,” he ran with the joke, reaching back to tap me on the arm to ask if I heard that one. I didn’t want to laugh, but he was just too good.
Scott just ignored us - he had learned that was best sometimes - instead, mentally scanning the ground. “I- I could’ve sworn this was it.” he squatted down to examine what wasn’t there further. “I saw the body, the deer came running, I dropped my inhaler.” He started to root around in the leaves, retracing his steps.
“The killer might’ve moved the body?” I speculated, because he was right, it was gone, I couldn’t even smell blood anymore.
“Well if he did I hope he left my inhaler, those things are like 80 bucks,” he grumbled saltily.
Over the noise of our banter I must’ve missed the sound of footsteps because, in a moment of silence, I picked up another heartbeat, turning to the side to see a tall man dressed in all black staring ominously in our direction. My arm outstretched to hit Stiles and my leg to kick Scott, but before they could complain, they saw him.
Scott shot to his feet as the man started to walk over.
“What are you doing here?” his voice boomed as he approached, clearly scaring the two boys on my either side as I heard their heart rates pick up and Stiles’ hands fidgeted frantically.
We obviously didn’t answer quickly enough because he spoke again, “Huh?”
I waited for Scott or Stiles to reply first, but they were frozen, I sighed.
“This is private property,” the man warned, the dark tone in his voice unsettling.
Then I smelt it… Wolf.
I stepped up, putting on my best, well-practiced innocent face, and looked up at him. “Oh! We’re sorry, we had no idea. We were just looking for something my friend lost,” my wide eyes sparkled, but he didn’t seem to fall for it, instead, his eyes lingered threateningly on me for a few seconds longer than they did on the boys.
A moment of eerie silence came over us before he swiftly took something out of his pocket and threw it into Scott’s hands. His inhaler. Then, without another word, the man walked away, but not before giving me another creepy death stare.
When he was a few paces away and the boys were still a little too shaken to talk, I broke the tension and chuckled. “Well, he was creepy,”
If my suspicions were right, I knew he heard that.
Stiles spun on his heel to face us his hands jumping up and he looked at Scott as if he was stupid for not reading his mind. “Dude!” he took a step closer so he could talk quietly, “That was Derek Hale! You remember right? He’s only like a few years older than us.”
“His family all burned to death in a fire like 10 years ago,” he continued, but I wasn’t listening. I checked out the moment he said ‘Derek Hale.’
So I was right.
The Hales were a notorious werewolf pack down here on the West Coast, but I had no idea they were still around! I had also heard that they were a different type of wolf… stronger, as they were not bound by only turning on a full moon. But I didn’t exactly know how ‘different’ they really were.
And if that was true about the Hales… then I was correct about Scott.
~
I stayed up the whole night thinking.
Was I a bad friend for not telling them what I already knew? For making them figure this out for themselves while I could easily explain? Yes.
Was it selfish of me to keep such a big part of my life from them when they were the two most important people in my life? Also yes.
But all of this was for their own good. At least that’s what I kept telling myself to distract from the constantly looming cloud of guilt that hung over my head.
Matters only got worse when Stiles messaged me in a panic. A confirmation. They found animal hairs on the body. More precisely, wolf hairs.
~
The next day I got into school considerably late and very sleep-deprived - because despite what the fairy tales say, vampires still need their beauty sleep.
I was practically dozing off in third-period Chem without Stiles there to keep me awake since the team had a mandatory practice before the big game this week, so I excused myself to go to the bathroom and wander around the halls.
“Now listen, McCall. You’re gonna tell me exactly what it is and who you’re getting it from because there is no way you’re out there kicking ass on the field like that without some sort of chemical boost.”
I stopped my stroll around the halls at the sound of a familiar voice from around the corner.
“Oh, you mean steroids! Are you on steroids?”
Then Scott.
I poked my head out around the corner - Jackson had definitely noticed something was up and Scott wasn’t doing a very good job at keeping it a secret. This wasn’t good.
Crash. “What’s going on with you McCall!”
“You really wanna know?”
Uh oh.
“Well so would I! I can see hear and smell things that I shouldn’t be able to see hear and smell! And I-”
“Woah woah woah,” I ran over, replacing Jackson’s hand on Scott’s shirt with mine and pushing Jackson away, standing in between them.
Jackson looked furious, if he were in a cartoon smoke would be coming out of his ears. I stared him down.
He scoffed and took a step back, “You need your little friend to come rescue you?”
I quickly shushed Scott before he made the situation worse.
“Goodbye, Jackson,” I gave him a fake smile and waited for him to leave.
When he kept his eyes on us as he walked away. “I’m onto McCall. I’m gonna find out what it is you’re taking and I don’t care how long it takes.”
Once he had turned the corner I focused my attention back on Scott.
“Thanks, Ser-”
My hand took hold of his collar once more and did the same move Jackson had just done, another crash as he hit the lockers, his eyes wide and confused. “What were you thinking!”
“What do you mean!” he was incredibly confused.
I sighed, realising he doesn’t know what’s going on at all, so I let go. “You can’t just go around telling Jackson Whittemore this stuff! I know you’re scared but he is the last person you should trust.”
The way his expression dropped told me he knew I was right. But our little interaction was cut short by Coach screaming that their break was over.
“Listen,” Scott started as he stepped back towards the door of the locker room, “I’ll see you later at the game.”
“The game? I thought Stiles told you-” but he left before I could finish my sentence.
~
“Stiles!” I hurried over to where he sat on the bench, his leg bouncing frantically as he chewed on his bitten fingernails.
His head flicked in my direction, a look of relief on his face, “Sera! I haven’t seen you all day,” he stood up quickly and put his hands on my shoulders to make sure I was really there.
“I came in late,” I brushed it off.
“Have you talked to Scott?”
His head shook vigorously, “He wouldn’t listen. I’m waiting for him to come out so I can try again.”
Just as he said that I saw Scott walking out onto the field and we both approached him, trying to stop from going out onto the field.
“Scott!” Stiles shouted, his voice breaking as he practically bashed the helmet out of his hands.
“Look! I’m playing the first elimination guys, can it wait?” Scott threw his hands up in annoyance, completely ignoring our desperation.
“Man, just listen!” I put my hands on Scott to physically bring his attention to us.
Stiles spoke and he spoke fast. “I overheard my dad on the phone. The fiber analysis on the body came back from the lab in L.A. and they found animal hairs on the body from the woods!”
But Scott was already leaving. We chased after him, no longer bothering to keep our voices hushed.
“Wait! Just hold on!” I reached to grab his sleeve but he was too far, “You’re not gonna believe what the animal was!” Still, he didn’t look back.
Then it was just me and Stiles again. Scott was long gone, but I still finished my sentence, quietly as if only to myself, “It was a wolf.”
For the entirety of the game I could not tear myself away from Stiles on the bench, I simply sat down on my haunches beside him. The more I watched Scott the more my nerves started to skyrocket.
If he was good last time, he was phenomenal now. Before, it was unusual. Now it was plain unnatural the way he swerved and dodged, moving with agility that wouldn’t be out of place in a superhero movie. He even did a whole ass flip over three of the players, that was the kicker. I looked up to Stiles who was already looking back down at me, sharing my loss for words.
Once the game was over we were too lost to join in on the cheering. I knew what was up, and it scared me to know that Stiles knew it too.
Was it so crazy to say that Scott was a werewolf?
~
“So… what exactly are we looking for again?” my eyes wandered over to Stiles at his computer while I lay on his bed, filing my nails.
He was practically buzzing after popping a couple Aderalls the second we got back from school. “Something… Anything!” His hands continued their frenzied typing, the clicking of the keys becoming a soothing background noise.
This was more or less me and Stiles’ typical Wednesday night - him doing whatever at his desk and me simply just being there so I didn’t get too bored sitting at home alone. To be fair, we usually didn’t have the constant impending sense of doom over the fact our best friend might be a freaking werewolf.
But even though we were both here, we hadn’t directly discussed our thoughts or theories, we didn’t really have to. But my anxiety was starting to escalate. “Okay, Stiles!” I speak louder - I had been saying things here or there but he’d been too in his own world to hear.
Finally, he spun his chair around and looked at me with wired eyes, “Hm?”
“What are we doing? What are we thinking?” I longed for a peek into his brain on a regular day, but today I really wanted to delve into those spinning cogs.
He paused to find the words. “We are thinking… There is something seriously up with Scott, and dare I say it- something not even human,” a sigh left his lips that he had bitten to pieces. The way he said ‘we’ instead of ‘I’m thinking’ was almost a plea for agreement, to tell him he’s not going crazy here, and if he was, at least I’d be crazy with him.
I nodded. “Yeah…” it was hard for me to know how much I should or shouldn’t say, or what I could say. Because I knew a lot more than I was letting on, and it was a shitty move - but the more he figured out about Scott… the closer he got to knowing my truth.
Silence hung in the air for a minute before he called me over with a wave of his hand.
“Come, look at this,” he swivelled his chair back around to sift through the myriad of tabs he had open that made his computer run slow and make an awful whirring noise.
My feet carried me to stand behind his chair, bending down to have a look at the screen.
‘Lycaon’
‘Wolfsbane’
A bunch of gory, ancient images littered the screen as he pointed out key phrases from each website.
And then, finally, the word ‘WEREWOLF.’
He must’ve noticed my wide-eyed muteness as he prompted a response out of me.
“Well?” he waited. “Listen, I- I know it sounds crazy, I know that. But… tell me this doesn’t make perfect sense?”
“You’re right,” I admitted candidly. He was.
“Look I’ve texted Scott… I figured he’s the one with all this he should be here to hear it.”
I was left to wonder how Scott would react to all of this; but the fact Stiles had accepted it so quickly was a wonder in itself. Secretly, I think he loved it all a little too much.
Knock knock.
When two loud bangs came from the other side of Stiles’ door he practically jumped out of his skin, luckily I was behind him to hold his chair upright, puting my hand down on his beating chest that he clutched with his own.
I tiptoed toward the door, reaching for the handle, but it opened before I got there.
There he was, his trademark crooked smile plastered on his lips as he could tell from our faces that he had scared us.
“Get in here!” I beckoned.
That’s when Stiles scrambled up to drag Scott in by the collar and pushed him back to sit on the bed while he paced around the room, finally sitting down in his chair.
“I’ve been reading,” he spoke at the speed of light as I took a seat next to Scott.
“For hours,” my hint of sarcasm didn’t seem to be appreciated, so I let him continue.
“Websites, books, all of it!”
Scott chuckled, “How much Adderal have you had today?”
“Unimportant.”
I turned to whisper one last thing before I shut up, “A lot.”
“Remember the joke from the other day…? Not a joke anymore.”
Scott looked clueless.
“The wolf– the bite in the woods!”
Still nothing.
Stiles shot up out of his seat. “Do you even know why a wolf howls?” His hands were flailing about like they always did; sometimes I genuinely thought he moved faster than me, and I have super speed!
“Should I?”
It was a rhetorical question.
“To signal its location to the rest of a pack! So if you heard a wolf howling that means there could’ve been others nearby, maybe even a whole pack of ‘em!”
The poor guy had not taken a break since 3 o’clock. I got up and stood at his side, placing a hand on his shoulder for him to take a breath, “Shh.”
“A whole pack of wolves?” Scott asked, now intrigued.
“No…” Stiles had finally calmed down a tad, “werewolves.”
My insides physically churned upon hearing him say it out loud. Scott however, did not look impressed. He stood up and grabbed his bag, ready to walk out, “Man, are you seriously wasting my time?”
Stiles was about to step forward, but I took over, moving my hand in front of him to signal I had got it, and my other one a bit rougher to Scott’s to stop him from leaving. “Look dude, I saw you on the field today, Scott. What you did today wasn’t just incredible… It was impossible.” My eyes softened, trying to reason with him.
He was about to retort when Stiles jumped back in, “People can’t just do that overnight! You flipped over 3 guys, Scott,” Stiles almost laughed, “Since when have you been able to do that, huh? I mean- your speed, your reflexes! And there’s the vision and the senses,” he listed everything off on his fingers.
“And don’t think I didn’t notice you don’t need your inhaler anymore!”
“Okay, dude! I can’t think about this now, we’ll talk tomorrow.” He somehow brushed off everything thing we had said as if it was the latest school gossip.
But I was now consumed by the same fever as Stiles, scampering up to him and taking him by the shoulders, raising my voice to their volume. “Tomorrow?”
“What!” Stiles added.
“No!” our pleas ping-ponged back and forth rhythmically as we begged for him to just listen. “The full moon’s tonight! Don’t you get it?”
“What are you guys trying to do!” Scott pushed back, but there was nothing in our eyes other than concern for him… and Allison.
“Everything in my life is somehow perfect, for once! Why are you trying to ruin it?”
I could physically feel the shift in the air as Stiles raked his fingers through his hair, taking in a lungful of air. “We’re trying to help,” his sincerity was like a pang to the heart.
“You’re cursed, Scott.”
That somehow hurt even worse.
It was a fact. But I found myself longing again for just a glimpse at what he really thought. Did he think his best friend was a monster? Did he think less of him? My questions were inherently selfish; I didn’t care what he thought about Scott - not nearly as much as what he thought about me. Because imagine how he would feel discovering his other friend is even more cursed, riddled with a dark history of deceit, horror, and even murder.
But this wasn’t about me. “Scott, he’s right,” my face turned just as solemn.
“You’re not only about the risk of you physically changing… it’s also when your bloodlust will be at its peak.”
Ah, my old friend. I was one to talk.
“Bloodlust?” his repetition was incredulous.
“Your-” I cleared my throat and tried again. “Your urge to kill.”
Scott practically seethed as his eyes flicked between us, “I’m already starting to feel an urge to kill, Sera.”
But before I could offer a witty retort of my own, Stiles had begun reading a passage from one of the books on his ransacked desk, “‘The change can be triggered by anger or anything that raises your pulse,’” he snapped the book closed and I half-flinched.
“Alright? I haven’t seen anyone raise your pulse like Allison does. You gotta cancel this date.”
Scott knew he was right, but I could hear the anger raising his pulse right there and then as Stiles shot towards his bag, scrambling around to get his hands on Scott’s phone to do it himself. “Screw it, I’m doing it myself.”
The next few seconds seemed to play in slow motion.
Scott’s voice shouted louder than I’d ever heard it, his actions much more aggressive as he practically flung Stiles against a wall in protest for his phone. A fist aimed at his best friend’s face, and his arm swinging back to push over the chair.
Too fast for either of them to notice I ran forward and intervened, pushing Scott’s now heaving figure away from a shellshocked Stiles. No one spoke.
Until Scott.
“I’m sorry.”
He didn’t sound sorry.
“I gotta get ready for that party.”
Tension in the room hung heavy, it was safe to say that was an unexpected turn.
And me? I was still stuck worrying that either of them had noticed the speed at which I got to them or the strength at which I countered Scott.
But when I finally came to my senses, I knew there was only one thing I could do.
Wordlessly I put my arms around Stiles, his naturally finding their place around my shoulders as I listened to the sound of his breathing.
Whatever was going on with Scott, I would take care of it.
~
The best way to stop Scott from doing anything stupid tonight was to keep an eye on him in person. He was with Allison at Lydia’s party, which naturally had half the entire school there even though it was announced just yesterday.
Which in turn meant that it might be a little more difficult to spot him than hoped.
Since I had come with Stiles I was immediately roped into one of his and his nerd friends’ conversations about something I had no clue about - it sounded like a foreign language. He could tell I was a little out of place, so he stuck by my side, his hand snaking around my waist as nothing more than a friendly gesture.
While we waited for a gap in conversation to seek out Scott, one of the jocks from the lacrosse team ‘bumped into me,’ a typical cocky grin on his lips. “Sorry, babe.”
It was so insincere I almost laughed in his face.
“Come here, I’ll get you a drink to make up for it.”
Gross. Stiles noticed the interaction and audibly scoffed, but I ignored him.
“Ew?” I said simply in the guy’s face, pushing him away with my fingertips and shooing him off.
This little interaction made the boys we were standing with suddenly aware that I was in fact a girl, and a popular one at that, turning them all even more awkward in the blink of an eye - Stiles found this incredibly stupid.
“Hey,” my demeanour screamed boredom and he must’ve noticed. “You go have fun. We can find Scott later, we’ve got plenty of time.”
My eyes lit up. ‘Thank God.’ “Ugh, you’re the best, Sti,” I grabbed his hand with both of mine and walked away, dropping it when out of reach. “Love you, man!” I pointed a finger at him before turning and skipping away.
There was a collective gasp from those boys, so shocked that Stiles could get a girl to say she loved him.
Poor losers. They’re lucky Stiles was a little nerd at heart because he was way too cool for them.
Outside seemed like my best bet to have some fun. Everyone was dancing, drinking, making out. This was my scene. You never outgrew a high school party (unless you were my buzzkill of a twin brother); just because you’re dead doesn’t mean you have to stop living.
I found some guy to dance with to kill my time, sipping a drink out of a red solo cup, all the while keeping my eyes peeled for that pesky little werewolf on the prowl somewhere.
And as we moved, there he was. He still looked very much human, and Allison didn’t look horrified, so it seemed as though we were all good.
The night moved quickly, 40 minutes had felt like ten and now there were even more people to block my watchful eye.
I could smell dog - or wolf rather - over the alcohol and teenage B.O., so Scott must be nearby.
But as soon as I told myself not to panic, my phone rang.
STILES…
Stiles
SCOTT
MISSING
CAN’T FIND HIM
GET OFF THAT DUDE AND COME
“Shit!” I cursed under my breath, causing the guy I was with to give a dumb ‘huh?’ which I waved off, excusing myself and running back into the house.
I soon found Stiles who was standing at the front door, keys in hand and ready to hit it.
But when we got to Scott’s house he had already left out his bedroom window. He would be back, there was no point in chasing him - not on a full moon, not out there.
Stiles went to sit on the bed while I paced, putting a hand on my forehead.
“Listen,” he stayed calm in an effort to soothe my nerves, “he’ll be back soon. I can take you home and I’ll come back to wait for him, I know you haven't been sleeping well.”
I spun on my heel to look him in the eyes, sincere enough to make my hand drop-down. “It’s fine you don’t-”
“Come on,” he stood up, not letting me finish and I didn’t want to argue - he was right, I was stressed, tired, and could not pull another all-nighter due to supernatural stress.
I was an overthinker in life, that was only amplified with being turned.
“Okay…” I admitted defeat, a once-in-a-lifetime thing to hear from me. Stiles even raised his eyebrows in shock that he didn’t have to do any more convincing.
“Thanks,” I paused, looking up at him. Maybe this was his way of making it even after I saved him from Scott earlier; he was the only one who ever saw that I needed saving sometimes too.
~
Late-night rides in Stiles’ Jeep were always a comfort. Music on, but not blaring, yet loud enough for me to sing along - quiet enough to hear my soft melodies over the recording.
I got him to drop me off down my road (as usual), using the excuse of ‘not wanting my brother to see me sneak back in.’
But the walk up to my house felt like a walk of shame. Every time I lied it felt worse. Especially to him.
After opening my door I sped straight up to my room, my swirling thoughts refusing to quiet for one second. I felt so alone in this fabricated life I had made spun. I couldn’t tell Scott or Stiles what I knew, and they were the ones fucking involved!
So I did the only thing I could do and called my brother.
“Damon?”
Immediately, he could hear something was up. Yeah, he was a rude, stone-faced, ladykiller (literally), but I saw his true heart of gold, just like when we were kids.
“Sera? Hey, what’s up?”
Where do I start?
Werewolves. My best friend being one of them. Thinking there might be more.
It was a long conversation.
~
After getting everything off my chest and a nice glass of bourbon, I slept like a rock.
In the morning, Stiles had finally managed to find Scott, picking me up on the way, but I wasn’t much entertainment. I was still half asleep, leaning my head against the window while I yawned.
“You needed that sleep, huh?” Stiles teased, wanting me to admit he was right to send me home last night.
My pride was too strong, but I did crack a smile, “Shut up.”
And soon, we saw a familiar, shirtless frame, wandering alone down where the road met the trees - did he have any idea how much of a werewolf cliche he was?
The car stopped beside him and he saw us, stopping to get in, looking downright shaken.
When he unlatched the door to my side he opened his mouth to tell me to get in the back, but Stiles interrupted before he could.
“Nuh-uh,” he shook his head, hands still gripping the wheel, “you know the drill, climb through,” he nodded toward the back.
My smile widened. It had become a given.
Scott went to protest that he had just been gallivanting through the woods for a night, but Stiles cut him off with another noise, pulling a disgruntled sigh out of Scott as he dove over the middle console.
The drive was unusually tense. A strong vibe of ‘I told you so’ came off both me and Stiles that coerced Scott into silence who now felt bad for the way he reacted yesterday, because we were right.
After about 3 minutes, he finally spoke, “You know what worries me the most?”
Stiles craned his neck back to see his friend curled up against the metal frame, his face unmoving as he was still angry. “If you say Allison I’m gonna punch you in the head.”
“She probably hates me now,” he whined, not listening.
“I doubt that,” I interjected, “But you might wanna come up with a pretty amazing apology.”
“Or you could tell her the truth,” Stiles shrugged as we both cast looks at him to tell him that was stupid. “And revel in the fact that you’re a freaking werewolf!”
“But really, we’ll get through this,” he continued, not only looking to Scott but to both of us. “If we have to we’ll chain you up ourselves on full moon nights and feed you live mice. I had a boa once, I could do it.”
There he was. His tone was lighter again as he reached down into his bag to chuck Scott the shirt he brought for him since we were headed straight for school. It was Stiles. He couldn’t stay mad for too long, not at something he found as awesome as this.
It left me with a glimmer of hope.

"You know it's hard to act 'straight' around you when you look like this." Grayson held up the pictures he took off Stefan on his phone.
The vampire narrowed his eyes. "Were you following me or something?"
"Duh. You would have noticed if you weren't so busy brooding and staring off into the sunset. These are great. Come on, admit it. You'd make a great model."
Stefan blushed slightly. "I wouldn't go that far."

Perception
Part 4
Part 1, part 2, part 3
Tumblr media
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Summary: Y/n just wanted to drop some books off at the Salvatores. She expects to find trouble, being the odd one out and everything, she doesn't expect his name to be Damon Salvatore. And with the week she's had? Everything is falling out of place and now the monsters of her past are out to get her.
Warnings: angst, violence, kidnapping, injuries, vampire stuffs (obviously, otherwise why are you here?), uhm lore dump***, fast burn AF, language probably...
Word count: 1.7k
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
The silence was loud. The shuffling of feet and the whispers of words that were just out of reach, a pounding baseline against my skull.
The past twenty-four hours came flooding back to me like a dam burst. Damon kissed me, he kissed me like he needed me as much as I needed air. It was hungry, enough to devour me whole. And then I was alone again. In the woods clearing my head. And then I was passing out, the sheer proximity of the spiteful vampire, my complete downfall. His words literally rattling around in my head. I was his... what? Soulmate? Do vampires even have those?
And then bang, we were hit head on by a car.
I opened my eyes suddenly, the room was dark, save for the Crack of light peeking through an abandoned doorway. My body throbbed in any direction I turned, my neck ached with a firey passion.
I noticed I was slumped against the wall, I also noticed that there was a sulking figure in the opposite corner. "Damon?" I should've heard him breath, but the room was painfully silent. I got to my knees, the pain blinding. Everything stung as I crawled across the floor. Splinters sprung up underneath my hands and dug into my skin. I reached him, I put my hands on his shoulders, I shook him gently. "Damon." I repeated.
I sighed as I heard him stir. He tuned towards me, his eyes screwed shut. "What-?" Suddenly there was motion, noise. It dulled the aching thrum of the quiet, that the pounding of my heart had filled moments ago. I placed my fingers to his lips to shush him. We waited.
"Yeah, we got the two for 'im. Don't think it wasn't a bitch to get the vampire to cooperate." There was the static pause that came with the response over the phone. "Well bloody tell 'im that the boss doesn't like to waste time. We're traders. If you ain't got nothin' to trade, don't bother calling back before the deal's done." The man down the hall hung up.
Damon tensed next to me as his heavy footfalls echoed down the hall. I felt something in Damon resolve, maybe it was this freaky mental bond between us, or maybe it was my own enhanced perception but I tensed with him.
The door swung open and suddenly I was being pulled by the waist faster than I could blink. Damon rushed the guy, shoving him against the doorframe as we passed. I heard the man grunt but we were gone before I could see his face. He called after us, and my ears ached as his words bounced off the walls and rattled in my skull as Damon raced towards some unseen escape, ~"supposed to keep him down until The Maker... call him! Don't let them escape!" Several voices trailed after him. It was all too much to take after everything that happened.
Inexplicably, I felt the rush of cool air against my cheeks. I realised I'd closed my eyes. When I opened them we were surrounded by woods. The trees were tall and looming like I'd described the Boarding house, except the death and decay I felt from them was rancid and dangerous. Vampires lived here, a lot of them.
"Shit, Y/n, you need to walk. I can't vamp-speed us out of here." He huffed. I noticed, even in the absence of the moonlight, the sweat that glistened on his brow and the heavy rise and fall of his chest. His clothes were torn and bloody. Then I saw his neck...
"Damon-" my heart panged at the sight.
"Not now!" He chastised in a whisper. We could still here the shouts and leers coming across the clearing from our captors. It made me shudder. Damon's hand, that I forgot had been clamped tightly around my waist pulled me tighter. A part of me should've hated him, he lied and tormented and for as long as I've known him, been a righteous jack-ass. The other part of me told myself I was stupid and he'd just saved my life.
I would deal with what came next later. "Okay," He whispered, "can you stand?" I nodded. "Good. I can hear the highway due South, we need to be absurdly quiet. Like, we don't even exist quiet." He looked at me, I must've looked terrified because he added, "Think Stefan and Elena when I walk into a room." I wanted to laugh, I really did, but I just nodded my head shakily.
So we walked. I held onto him, my left leg in agony with every step. I could feel Damon was putting on a brave face, even with the gaping, bite-shaped gash that poured blood down his neck. He wasn't going to make it to the highway.
"Damon, stop." He shook his head, not really listening. "Damon, just," I wanted to find the words, "Do what somebody asks of you, ifor once?" He scowled at me. We stopped. I had no ides how long we had been walking, but I knew I had to help him. It was my only chance of getting somewhere safe. And ashamedly, I had to admit that I wanted answers. I extended my wrist and he looked at me. "It's not that confusing. Or do I have to explain the process of being a vampire to a vampire?" That was supposed to be funny. I shook my head at him. "I'm serious. You need blood if we're gonna get out of here. Just heal me if I pass out." I started to feel squirmish under his scrutinizing gaze.
"I wanted to tell you." He started. He looked away from me, my something I don't think he could see. "When a vampire... when a vampire has been alive long enough, sometimes this freak of nature crap happens and it sucks two souls together." His words were slurred and I went with him as he fell to the ground. "It's all about witchy balance, mumbo-jumbo."
"But what does that mean? I mean, why is it such a big deal? Hundreds of vampires have lived longer than you." It was so surreal to see him like this. Almost-
"Because it's a curse. The darkness of the night always taints whatever light it touches. That's how it's always been." He grimaced.
"Are you scared?" I asked.
He looked up at me. "Yes. I wanted to talk to a witch I know in Georgia. She knows about the blood curse."
"Blood curse?" He looked at the wrist I had offered him. "Oh." It was all snapping into place. "So that's why we've been so, off, around each other? It's a curse?" He nodded. His breath even more ragged.
"The curse of an immortal. To be die for his obsession for his mortal counter part. If they bond, she'll never be able to turn and he'll never get enough of her blood. Eventually they both die of madness." He said it like it had bitten him and the very words rolled off his tongue with a venom that rattled through me. It was terrifying.
"But, you need to get us out of here." He scoffed, the bitterness written across his sculptured face.
"And then what Y/n? We go about our lives? We succumb to the curse and the lust? And then you fucking die?" His nails dug into my wrist, the very life essence that we both so desperately needed, pooling underneath his hand. I watched the veins under his eyes pulse.
"I can't... it's too cruel. Even for me Y/n. It's too much to ask. What's another day worth anyways?" He laughed. It was a hollow sound. "I've been a monster all my life and that's fine. I can be the bad guy, but not with you. I just can't. I don't even know if that's me, or some shitty curse that's an anomaly in of itself." Damon looked awful, his skin was paling and his brow was furrowed in a mixture of grief and pain.
I touched his face. "Hey, maybe it's cruel, maybe it's too much to ask. But shit happens Damon. The test of a person is never how they fall. It's how they get up and I need us to get up. Later is later. I can deal with that, but I need us to be a team right now. And maybe... maybe you're right, and it's just some shitty curse, but it doesn't matter." He looked up at me, surprise glinting in his cerulean eyes. I pressed my wrist against his lips. "Because I knew you were a fighter, that's why I didn't shoot you when we first met. I couldn't get that fire out of my head. You were all consuming and dammit if that man can't find away around a dumb, luck of the draw curse."
He searched my eyes, my face,my very soul. He asked me if I really meant what I said, if I was okay with this, with him. As much I wanted to say that I should hate him, I didn't. As much as I wanted to run as fast as I could, I wouldn't because the man I had come to know had this incredible allure about him. A sensation I could only describe as a roaring blaze. That's the man that I wanted to win against all odds with. And I would.
His fangs dug into my flesh, the feeling was pain and pleasure all in one. I felt something solidify between us, the magic that kept Damon alive and the power that allowed me to see beyond my wildest dreams, it intertwined so beautifully, that I couldn't help but shed a tear.
-----------
It was sunrise when I woke up against Damon's chest. The woods seemed less frightening now, as the birds chirped and the golden rays of light blossomed through the leaves. I smiled at how the light caught his eyelashes and made him look so peaceful in sleep.
Then I heard the roaring of cars in the distance. "Damon!" I shoved his chest as I began to rise. He groaned and grimaced against the light. He lifted a hand to the sun.
"Wha-?" He could barely finish a thought before I was pulling him up and racing towards the sound.
"I hear the Highway!" I beamed at him.

When Stefan enters his bedroom, he spots you sitting on the edge of his bed, catching him by surprise.
“Y/N, what’re you doing here?”
You stand up from the bed, starting to slowly approach the perplexed man. “I’m here to say… I’m sorry,” you confess, letting out a light exhale.
Stefan raises an eyebrow. “What do you have to be sorry for?”
You pause for a moment, bracing yourself for what you were about to say. “I lied to you and to everyone else for the past few days.”
“What do you mean?”
“I know how to bring back your memories. I always have.”
At the mention of his past memories, his eyes widen in surprise. He lets that sink in for a moment — a part of him feels confused, and maybe even a little betrayed that he could’ve gotten his memories back all this time but you were just choosing not to. However, the biggest part of him was trust. The trust he had for you, despite not remembering anything about you. But something in him inclined him to trust your decision.
“Wait, but… then why?”
You let out another sigh before explaining. “Because for the first time since we met, I’ve never seen you this… happy. This free without all the pain and trauma that you’ve been through. And maybe it’s selfish but… it’s just a relief seeing you like this. I’m sorry.”
Stefan takes a careful step towards you. “Y/N,” he begins, reaching out to place a gentle hand on your shoulder. “I get that, but I also know that all the pain I’ve gone through is a part of who I am, and I can’t just run away from that. So, I understand what you’re saying, but I want my memories back. It’s for the best.”
You give him a small smile at his sincere gesture and words. “If you say so,” you nod, finally accepting the truth.
As much as you wanted to ‘save him from his own pain,’ you also knew that it was wrong. Those memories, even the painful ones, are what make Stefan — well, Stefan. And the reassurance in his tone finally made you accept that.
He removes the hand he has on you as you brings your hands to the side of his face. “This is gonna hurt,” uou warn him in a soft, delicate tone.
When he gives you a nod of confirmation, you close your eyes and begin to chant the spell to recover his memories. In an instant, it’s like a switch flicks in his head and he groans in pain. Flashbacks of his past start to show up as an indication that he's getting his memories back. From when he first met you, when he first met Katherine, when he turned into a vampire, when he murdered his father, when he became a Ripper, when he first met Lexi, when he first met Elena, when he fell in love with her… and when he got trapped in the safe, drowning for months. All the memories and feelings he has endured just passed through his veins in the most overwhelming way possible.
Upon hearing his gasps of pain, you almost stopped yourself from casting the spell, but you pushed through and kept going.
Finally, when you go through the last moment right before Qetsiyah had fried his brain, you stop herself and slowly remove your hold on him.
Opening your eyes, you examine his body reactions, seeing that he was still panting softly and closing his eyes.
“Stef? Are you alright?” You question with worried expressions.
Stefan lets out a heavy sigh before responding, still slightly breathless. “You mean other than the fact that I just got all my memories back in a matter of seconds? Yeah, I am.”
Relieved, you let out a light chuckle at his reply. “Good, good.”
He finally opens his eyes to spot the small smile on your face before your eyebrows furrow slightly.
“Are you sure it worked?” You ponder with a doubtful tone.
“1858; the sun was setting and you were sitting on the edge of a lake casting a fire spell. Quite frankly, Damon and I didn’t realize it at that time, but I recall seeing a bright light surging from the corner of my eyes before you realized that we were watching you.”
You raise an eyebrow at his words, before quickly realizing what he was talking about. “...that was the day that we first met.”
“Yeah, it was.” Stefan nods.
The previous smile on your face only increases in size, everything finally seeming to be alright for at least this very second.
“It’s good to have you back, Stef.”
“It’s good to be back, Y/N.”

The Scholar & The Hunter
Jeremy Gilbert x Female Human Reader
Summary: Jeremy gets the hunter's mark after Connor was killed by Elena. He realizes the importance of the person he needs to protect.
Tumblr media
Y/N L/N and Jeremy Gilbert had always been incredibly close. They were in the same grade and both had an affinity for art, but there were also some distinct differences between them. Y/N was an academic who took her studies incredibly serious and Jeremy preferred to skip class.
Y/N didn't have a very large friend group and spent most of her time with Jeremy. Y/N suddenly found herself alone when he decided to hang out with an unfavorable crowd of drug users like Vicki Donovan.
Y/N had always liked Jeremy as something more than a friend. Elena knew and had been rooting for them for years, but Y/N never told Jeremy. They drifted apart when Jeremy found himself interested in Vicki, Anna and Bonnie.
Y/N would always be there for him, but seeing him fall for other people broke her heart.
The pair eventually found their way back to one another when Jeremy discovered the existence of the supernatural. He needed to confide in someone and found himself turning to Y/N.
Jeremy told her absolutely everything, gifting her a Vervain necklace and making her promise that she would never take it off.
Y/N quickly delved into the journals of the founding families in Mystic Falls. She made notes and categorized the information into different sections, noting which journal provided what.
Y/N also talked to Stefan while he was over at the Gilbert home, making notes about how Vampirism worked and what they could and couldn't do. Y/N had quickly come to possess a wealth of knowledge on Vampires, Werewolves, Hybrids, Witches, Originals and Doppelgangers.
Jeremy was thankful to have someone reliable beside him in such a crazy world. Y/N looked at things logically, breaking everything down into facts and consulting relevant sources for solutions.
Y/N had helped Elena, Stefan and Bonnie on multiple occasions. She brought them important information and they valued her contributions dearly.
Y/N managed to get Jeremy a job at the grill with her and Matt. They worked together almost every day and spent most of their time off together as well.
It was rare that Jeremy and Y/N were apart for more than a day, usually talking on the phone or texting when they couldn't physically be together. Y/N had almost become an expected presence in the Gilbert home over the years and it was strange to go a day without seeing her.
Jeremy wouldn't allow Y/N to come around the house after Elena became a Vampire. He was determined to keep her safe and refused to expose her to a newly transitioned Vampire.
Jeremy knew that things could take a turn for the worst when a hunter named Connor arrived in Mystic Falls. It took him less than five minutes to find Tyler and shoot him in foyer of the Lockwood home. This man clearly meant business and could completely wipe out the Hybrid and Vampire populations of Mystic Falls.
After a few close calls and a hostage situation at the Grill, Elena killed Connor in cold blood. The hunter's mark began to appear on Jeremy's body and he told Y/N immediately. She looked through every relevant source, telling him that he would need to kill a Vampire in order to stop Elena's hallucinations and expand the mark.
Jeremy killed one of Klaus' hybrids to save his sister and suddenly everything changed. He began to dream about killing Elena, looking at her with malice whenever he saw her.
Y/N noticed the change right away, recommending that he come and stay with her for a while. Jeremy began to pack a bag and quickly discovered that Elena had already moved in with the Salvatore brothers.
Jeremy was disgusted by the sheer amount of relief that filled his body. He shouldn't be happy that his sister left their home, but he couldn't help it.
He was a hunter and she was his prey, it had become his instinct to kill Vampires and he couldn't have her around him any longer.
...
Jeremy sat in his bed with his back leaned against the headboard. The house was completely silent aside from the soft clicking of Y/N's laptop keyboard as she typed and the soft scribbling of pen on paper.
She had been looking into the lore about hunters, trying to learn as much as she possibly could. The group didn't need another surprise like they had with the hunter's curse.
Jeremy watched her as she worked, sitting in his desk chair with her legs crossed. She looked through a stack of papers, making notes and searching up whatever peaked her interest.
"Hey, Y/N?" Jeremy questioned.
"Yeah," She replied, setting down her pen and looking over at him.
"Can you stay here tonight?" He asked.
"Are you flirting with me, Jeremy?" She questioned with a teasing smile.
He looked down, cheeks flushing as a small smile appeared on his face, "You know I'm always flirting with you," He replied.
"That was a very smooth response," Y/N said, turning the chair to face him, "All joking aside, do you really want me to stay?" She asked.
"Yeah, I just- I hate the silence," He said.
"So, you're saying I snore?" Y/N questioned.
Jeremy huffed a laugh, "Definitely... I want you to stay so I can listen to you snore all night," Jeremy said.
"You're lucky that I like you, Jeremy," Y/N said.
He watched her as she turned back to the desk, tidying up her papers and plugging in her laptop. Y/N stood up from the chair and Jeremy got out of the bed, he stepped over to his dresser and pulled out a shirt for her to wear.
"Elena said you can borrow whatever else you need from her," Jeremy said.
Y/N took the shirt from his hand, "Did you tell her I was staying over?" She asked.
"No, but she figured that you would," He replied.
"She knows you well," Y/N said.
"She does," Jeremy nodded.
Y/N stepped into the bathroom, closing the door gently behind herself. Jeremy sat down on the edge of his bed as he waited for her to come back.
His heart raced as he fidgeted with his hands, he had decided that tonight was when he was going to make his move. After years of pining, he was finally ready to tell her how he really felt and he hoped that she felt the same.
The hunter's mark had made him look at his life through a different lens and he realized that Y/N was incredibly important to him. Jeremy would die before he let any harm come to her, Y/N meant everything to him and he had fallen in love with her.
The door opened and he stood up, Y/N almost seemed surprised to see him standing there. She was dressed in his t-shirt and a pair of Elena's sleep shorts, but he had never seen her look more beautiful.
"Is everything okay?" Y/N asked, setting down her stack of folded clothes and giving him her undivided attention.
"I have something to tell you," He said, she nodded.
"I think I'm falling in love with you... I completely understand if you don't feel the same way, but your friendship means everything to me and I don't want to lose that," Jeremy said.
"Jeremy," Y/N started.
His stomach dropped, "Y-you don't have to say anything. We can just pretend that I never opened my mouth and keep things the same as they've always been," Jeremy said quickly, desperate to keep from hearing her rejection.
"What if I don't want to keep things the same?" Y/N asked.
"Are you- Are you saying what I think you're saying?" He questioned, eyes searching her face for any sign of dishonesty.
"Jeremy Gilbert, I have been in love with you since we were ten," Y/N stated.
He huffed a laugh, "Well, I guess it took me a little longer to figure out how I felt," Jeremy said.
"You're a guy. It usually takes you a bit longer to figure things out," Y/N teased.
Jeremy smiled, cupping her cheeks and pressing his lips to hers in a gentle kiss. Y/N rested her hands on his sides, tentatively moving her lips against his.
Jeremy pulled away, resting his forehead against hers as he brushed his thumbs across her skin gently.
"I need you to know that I will do everything in my power to keep you safe. You mean everything to me, Y/N," He said softly.
"I'm a lucky girl," She smiled.
"The luckiest," Jeremy replied, returning his lips to hers in a more passionate kiss.
Jeremy pulled away, pressing a kiss to her forehead before he looked down at her, "Will you be my girlfriend?" He asked.
"Yes, of course I will," She replied.
...
Jeremy made his way down the stairs, hesitating as he heard the sound of a knife thudding gently against a cutting board. He adjusted his grip on the wooden stake in his hand as he slowly entered the kitchen.
"Morning, little Gilbert," Damon greeted, chopping up spinach.
"You shouldn't be here, Damon. If you haven't heard, I'm having a hard time not murdering Vampires lately," Jeremy stated.
"I'm willing to take the chance," Damon stated. He lifted up the cutting board and swept the ingredients into a bowl of raw eggs.
"Elena told me that you were having a sleepover with Y/N," Damon said, stirring the mixture with a fork as he turned towards the stove.
"Why do you care?" Jeremy questioned.
"I'm just nosy by nature," Damon smirked, dumping the mixture into the hot skillet. It sizzled softly as he placed the bowl into the sink.
"I could hear you two getting wet and wild in the shower when I came in. Elena's gonna be elated to hear that her little brother has finally admitted his feelings," Damon said.
"Why are you even here, Damon?" Jeremy asked.
"I'm making fritatta," Damon stated simply.
"What's the real reason?" Jeremy questioned.
Y/N made her way down the stairs, she paused in the doorway when she noticed the stake in Jeremy's hand.
"Is everything okay?" Y/N asked.
"Everything is great, I'm making fritatta," Damon said.
"Ooh, I love your fritatta," Y/N said, stepping around Jeremy and taking a seat at the kitchen island.
"She loves my fitatta," Damon repeated with a smile.
Jeremy shifted on his feet, feeling tense at the sight of Y/N being close to a Vampire. Damon picked up a bowl of strawberries, reaching out to place them down in front of Y/N.
Jeremy took a quick step forward, breath speeding up as he raised the stake slightly. Damon glanced at him, setting the bowl down on the countertop.
"Fresh from the market," He said, returning to the stove.
Damon moved the skillet into the oven to finish cooking, leaning against the counter and watching Y/N eat some of the fresh fruit.
"You two had sex then?" He questioned.
"Damon," Jeremy snapped.
"We did," Y/N replied simultaneously.
"Why would you tell him that?" Jeremy asked, Y/N shrugged.
"He's less annoying when you're honest," She stated.
"Good for you. Some time doing the horizontal tango might take his mind off those murderous tendencies," Damon said.
"We'll keep at it then," Y/N replied, biting into another strawberry.
"Speaking of those killer instincts, we might have figured out a way around that," Damon stated.
"Really? What is it?" Y/N asked.
"Bonnie's witchy teacher dude. He knows a lot about hunters and he thinks that hypnosis can help change how Jeremy responds to the urges," Damon said.
"Does Elena know?" Y/N questioned.
"She does. But she thought it should be more of a phone call rather than a face to face convo because of your affinity for sharp wooden objects," Damon stated, sending Jeremy a smile.
"Where are we meeting him?" Y/N asked.
"The lake house. Elena and I are going to come up at game time, but Bonnie and Shane will join you around noon," Damon said.
"Just enough time for fritatta," Y/N smiled.
"My thoughts exactly," Damon replied.

Summary: All Stefan keeps talking about is his ex. That’s not what a girl wants to hear her crush talk about.
Warnings: drinking, kissing, I don’t think there’s any swearing but you never know with me.

“Elena Elena Elena” I rolled my eyes flopping onto my bed. Caroline sat at my desk watching me with one eyebrow up. “I can see it’s bothering you” she slowly lowered her eyebrow and put her hands together. I rolled onto my side looking over at her. “It’s all he ever talks about” I sighed making my eyes turn in. “One, don’t do that it freaks me out” Caroline shook her head. “And two” she started as she stood up walking over to the side of the bed. “Look I love you y/n but when it comes to men- you’re flirting isn’t really- the best”.
“Oh so it’s my fault he can’t get over his ex” I sat up straight at a quicker pace than lightning. “No” she snapped at me “I’m just saying Stefan probably doesn’t even know you’re interested, if he did he wouldn’t be talking about other girls” “oh but it’s not just any other girl- it’s Elena, she’s so perfect, she’s so pretty”. Caroline rubbed my arm sympathetically with a tiny smile. “Show him you’re interested, he probably will be too”, “but what if he’s not, what if he really is still in love with her”.
“Then that’s his loss, not yours, you get over him and show him how it’s done” Caroline winked at me perking up slightly. I chewed on my lip thinking about it. “Okay, I’ll up my flirting game” I nodded my head and rubbed my hands together as if I was creating some manipulative plan to kidnap him or end the world. “Atta girl, you’ll see him at the party right, there’s your chance” “Stefans picking me up” I stood up going over to my wardrobe. “Really? He told me he couldn’t drive me because he had plans before it and they might run over” Caroline scrunched her face in deep thought at my blue rug laying on the floor.
“Caroline, focus- what the hell do I wear” I ordered bringing her attention back onto me standing in between hangers upon hangers of clothes. “A dress, what about that white one your mum brought you for your birthday?” She shrugged, her eyes lit up and she snapped her fingers when the idea came to her. “This one?” I questioned pulling it out and holding it over my body. “Yeah wear that, it’s well cute- with the boots you had on when you came to sleep at mine last week” “casual but cute, I like your thinking” I nodded hanging it on my wardrobe door.
“Right babe I better get a move on, I need to be ready for six I’m catching a ride with Elena and Damon” she told me standing up and collecting her stuff putting it in her bag. “Alright care I’ll see you later thanks for everything” I walked over and we embraced each other sighing into one another’s hair. “Chin up, practice some flirting- maybe watch a YouTube video” she offered up as she stepped back. “I’m not doing that!” I sniggered shaking my head. “Your loss” she shrugged giggling silently as she left my room. Leaving me to my own devices.
I pulled the dress down and put it across my body holding it up in front of the mirror. It took me just over an hour to get ready. I had a shower, blow dried and curled my y/h/c hair. Before putting on my outfit. I tried on about five coats to see which one was the best. Eventually I went with a black bomber jacket. And with that the time turned quarter past six, the door bell went off on the dot. So Stefan Salvatore of him. I smiled grabbing my bag and jumping towards my bedroom door knowing who was downstairs. I grasped the handle taking deep breaths composing myself.
I walked down the stairs, my house was empty right now as both parents were away on holiday in England. I wondered to the front door as my heart pounded against my chest. I yanked it open and there he stood with tulips in his hands and the famous Stefan smile. He looked so cute. “H-hi” he stuttered as his eyes dragged down me blatantly. “You look- amazing- stunning- well… beautiful” he stuttered unsure of what word he wanted to use.
“You cleaned up too- are these for me?” I raised my eyebrow at the gesture. “Of course” he smiled passing them across to me. “They’re gorgeous, I can’t believe you brought me flowers” I smiled from ear to ear. “Come in while I buy them in a vase”. My mind raced, why had Stefan brought me flowers, was this a date? No we’re just friends right. I came back out the kitchen and he’d been waiting in the hall. “All ready?” I quizzed grabbing my bag that I’d left on the side. “Yeah, let’s get going” he nodded his head out the door. “Elenas already there”.
“Of course she is” I gave him a fake smile sighing before coldly grabbing the Handel and walking out first. “And Damon and care of course” Stefan told me following me out, though he had to raise his voice a tad because of the distance I’d gone. “Lift the Handel up all the way” I ordered not even turning around. I heard him do as I said before joining me inside the car. “I think we’re all really in need of this bonfire party” Stefan began as he drove off my drive.
“Mm me too, it’s been a stressful few months” “uh huh especially with all the elena stuff going on” Stefan laughed but again my eyes subtly rolled and my stomach sank. Could he go five minutes without mentioning her. “How about we stop talking about Elena for tonight, what better way to get over her than at a party” “oh I’m over her” Stefan chuckled re gripping the steering wheel. “Well a party is definitely in need, never know who we might meet”. “It’s mystic falls everyone knows everyone” Stefan shook his head. We turned into the woodlands where the party was happening.
We could already see the cloud of smoke rising from the fire. The crowd circling round it, chatting and drinking. “Park over there that’s Bonnie’s car” I pointed out but Stefan was already turning into a spot, I noticed Damon’s car being right next to us. “It’s alright this one’s bigger”. Sure it is Stefan sure it is. We both got out and soon made our way towards the people. “Let’s grab drinks first” his hand attached its self to my lower back as we waded through the crowd. I felt my heart pound and it made me relax into him.
We grabbed two beers and by the time we’d turned around elena was running up to us “Stefan! Y/n!” She wrapped her arms around his neck and then did the same to me. “Hey” I answered bluntly with a flick of my hand. “I started to think you two weren’t coming” “we just got- held up” Stefan struggled looking at me, I smiled knowingly and a warm sensation came across me knowing Elena had no idea what we were talking about.
Damon strolled over coming to say hi to us. “Well come on, everyone’s over near the bridge” he nodded his head. “we’ll catch up with you soon” Stefan shrugged answering before I could. Him saying that made me really excited, I wanted it to just be me and him so I could up my flirting game. “Oh come on stef I haven’t seen you in ages no one has apart from y/n, come and catch up with everyone”. His eyes flicker between me and Elena for a second or two. “Alright” he smiled simply and Elena squealed. “Come on then” she grabbed Damon’s wrist and Stefan started following them nodding to me to come with him.
We landed at the group where Bonnie, Tyler, Caroline, Matt and Jeremy were all waiting for us with smiles. We all exchanged hi’s and then jumped into conversation. My excitement was short lived, I loved my friends but I just wanted some alone time with Stefan. Though I wasn’t complaining too much because he didn’t really leave my side the whole night. We stayed in the same position talking, laughing and drinking for most of the night. Though Bonnie and care soon dragged me over to dance and I brought Stefan with me.
“How are you so good at this!” I laughed as Stefan spun me around and pulled me towards him. “I’ve had years of experience” he smiled close to my face. My hand was on his shoulder and the other his bicep while both of his were wrapped around my waist. “Have you always liked dancing?” “When I can dance with someone as pretty as you” he nodded making me smile again. “Stefan- Stefan!”. And just like that our moment was ruined. He pulled away from me and Elena ran through the crowd her eyes were full of tears.
“What’s wrong?” “Damon’s left- we got into an argument and he stormed off” “what about?” His eyebrow raised “I’ll explain it all to you, can you take me home please?” “I…” Stefan looked at me. “Bonnie will take you home- or you could call a taxi” I offered to Elena. “I know I know- I just really want to talk to you Stefan, you understand me in a different way and im hysterical right now” she wiped her eyes sitting back on her leg. “It’s okay I’ll take you home” he nodded completely pulling away from me now and standing on her side.
She threw her arms around him thanking him. “I’ll see you later y/n” he rubbed my arm before him and Elena left the crowed. I watched them walk all the way over to the car. “I’m sorry girl, she ruined your moment I thought he was going to kiss you then” Caroline came round with her hand on my shoulder. “No- he wasn’t” I shook my head. “He’s not over her, I’m going home” I smiled at her with tears In my eyes. “But he’s coming back for you” Caroline shook her head.
“He’s not care, he’ll be with her all night, I’m calling a taxi” I nodded hugging her before removing myself from the crowd. I waited for the taxi on the main road and it took me promptly home. As soon as I got in my removed the stupid dress and put my pjs on. I thought I was doing alright until I stepped into the kitchen for some water. I saw the flowers. My heart shattered. Tears slowly fell down my face as I realised I was never getting him. He didn’t love me like he loved her. I slid down the wall and took a seat on the kitchen floor.
I didn’t know how long I’d been there crying just staring at the flowers trying to make sense of them. A knock on the door pulled me out of my day dream. I wiped my face and went over to the door. When I pulled it open Stefan stood there. I blinked confused about why he was on my door step. “What do you want?” I asked harshly. Which maybe was a bit mean. “Well- I went back to the party to find you but care said I’d messed up and just kept tutting at me” he struggled still looking a bit confused. “So you came to check on me?”
“You look like you needed someone to check on you, are you crying?”. “No” I answered bluntly moving my eye contact to the ground. Stefan squeezed past me walking into my house and turning into the kitchen. He switched the kettle on and got two cups out while I closed the door. “You just inviting yourself in now?” “Nope you already invited me in once, we’re going to sit down and you’re going to tell me what’s wrong- or what I done wrong”.
“You haven’t done anything wrong Stefan- it’s nobody’s fault” “so why are you talking to me like I’ve done something wrong?” He raised an eyebrow walking towards me. “Because it feels like you have but I know deep down it’s wrong to blame you, you can’t help it” I sighed looking at the floor. “Help what?” He quizzed lifting my chin up with his hand. “That your not over Elena- that you love her more than you’ll ever like me, and that’s not your fault that’s mine- I fell for you at the wrong time and I put my hands up for that and honestly you can’t help who you like and even though it’s not me I shouldn’t blame you for that because…”
“Y/n!” “Stop talking!”. I looked up at him with full eyes. “Let me just finish explaining- I don’t want you to think I’m…” and with that Stefan cut me off by pressing his lips onto mine. “Why are you kissing me?” I whispered against his lips. He kissed me again for a second or two before admitting “I’m interested in you y/n”. Hearing that made me pull him closer to me and make the kiss harder. His hands held my waist close to him. When we eventually pulled away he put his forehead on mine. “If your interest in me why’d you drop me for Elena constantly, why do you always talking about her with me”.
“I don’t drop you for her y/n, she’s delicate and even though we aren’t together I’ll still look out for her, I made her a promise in the same way that she is now my sister in law, she’s family so if she needs me I’ll be there but I will always be back for you y/n- I came back for you tonight”. I bit my lip feeling slightly bad for not thinking about that. “And the reason I’m constantly bringing her up- is because… you reached out to me after the break up and we grew close immediately, I just didn’t want you to go anywhere”.
“That- doesn’t make sense” I shook my head completely confused. “I thought if you thought I was healed you wouldn’t want to see me as regularly because I wouldn’t need you”. “So- you pretended to miss her because you didn’t want me to leave?” “I didn’t think it through- I panicked” he sighed stepping backwards clearly embarrassed that I’d caught onto it. “So- you’re over her?” I looked up at him hopeful.
My eyes sparkled with tears, Stefan took that step back toward me and cupped my face. “Very much so, yes” he nodded in a whisper. “I understand if you don’t believe me- I shouldn’t have done what I did I can’t imagine how it made you feel” he sighed brushing my cheeks with his thumbs. I put my hands around his neck shaking my head. “I believe you Stefan” “you believe that I’m interested in you and you only?”. I nodded my head but couldn’t help the little corner smile.
“That’s what I wanted to see, there’s my girl” he whispered as my smile grew and my cheeks burnt red. “I’m all yours” I whispered running a hand through his hair. “About time”.
