Covid: Protecting the Vulnerable
I continue to write about Covid on my blog because scientists aren't saying it's gone. The pandemic has not only given me more to write about, but it has given me more to worry about, because I deal with a disability and because I have a lot more to lose if I get sick.
The pandemic and lifting restrictions
The pandemic isn't finished, and with restrictions lifted, how are the vulnerable supposed to get back into their lives? How does lifting restrictions help the vulnerable and why are charities like Voice UK, Mencap, Respond, The National Autistic Society, Scope, The challenging Behaviour Foundation, Sibs, Age UK, Crisis UK, Shelter, not coming forward to criticise the government for continuing to expose those vulnerable to the virus?
Covid-19 vaccines are mismatched
While updated bivalent mRNA vaccines target both Omicron sub-variants and earlier strains, by-and-large, COVID vaccines are increasingly mismatched to circulating variants, said McMaster University immunologist and researcher Matthew Miller.” (Craig Chivers/CBC) – (Source: https://www.cbc.ca) There are still issues with the current vaccine and those issues aren't being addressed.
My Covid experiences
I deal with a disability and that makes me vulnerable. I caught Covid in December, and as a result I missed seeing my twin pass away. It also took me 6 weeks to recover. Then with a two-week overlap, in January, I picked up a cough and flu virus. When I get sick and with a disability, it takes me longer to recover.
We have to want to care, to protect the most vulnerable of society, for people who are home. There needs to be consideration for the vulnerable, to protect the vulnerable, so that they can comfortably get back into their lives and so they can stay safe. Masking up is all it would take.

Hi!
As fortunate as it is unfortunate, not much has changed.
I am still in good health, at least physically. A really big part of me wants to get out of the country, not even just for safety but also to be able to do some work. Mom doesn't want to leave at all though, and I don't think I should leave her alone or with just the pets.
So it is what it is for now. I really hope there will be some progress soon. I would love to go home, but I have no idea what home looks like, if there even still is a home, a gym, anything. But I am ready to help rebuild everything. The wait just adds to the dreadfulness.
Thank you very much for the continuous love, the support, the prayers. Rest assured that it all helps a lot! Just a little less worrying would be very much appreciated though, as it doesn't help when feeling and being safe. Know that I am and will be alright.

Rethinking Covid Safety Measures
It’s a while since I’ve done a more personal blog and I am struggling. Precautionary safety measures were put in place for our physical safety and with those gone, no one is safe.
Another rise in Covid cases
Perhaps it's got something to do with the fact that I am home, and coming into the winter months, cases are now rising and contrary to the UK political stance on the virus, it's never gone away and it's not going away. Like all viruses, it simply lies dormant, until it strikes and it will.
Be a little cautious and stay safe
I've always been cautious, but you can never be too cautious, when it comes to protecting yourself from the virus. It's a virus that affects the lungs and airways. I would rather take action to prevent having to deal with the virus, or at least lessen its impact by taking healthier measures, if it were to happen.
Living a virus free life should be the priority
While I appreciate getting back into our lives has been a top priority, not wanting to re-catch the virus and live with long-covid, should be our top priority.
There is nothing courageous about taking one for the team, just so that you get a life. Having to deal with a virus there is no cure for, becomes more of an existence. When it comes to the virus, we're not all equal.
A lack of precautionary measures in school
Parents with children school age are still talking about the lack of precautionary measures in school, if anything they’re talking about it more now, we’re coming into the winter months.
The realities of a disability and the fact that the UK government doesn’t care to change its stance is continuing to make my life difficult. And with divided opinions, it looks like those like me who are high risk are on our own.
Changing our stance of those precautionary measures
But facts stay facts, and we would all do well to change our thinking. The science hasn’t changed. By wearing masks, you reduce new cases, reduce reinfection for yourselves and keep those who are vulnerable and high risk, safe.
Increase in cases
Not to means more increases of the virus in the winter months, with potential new variants. With precautionary measures you protect yourself, people in closed public spaces, families with small children, extended family members, patients in hospitals and in residential care homes and that reduces Covid-19.
Why are we not doing more to want to reduce the virus, to live in a world that is free of virus, disease. What is wrong with us?

The Lifting of Masks
I took the opportunity to go out to a local retail park with my mask on, before the lifting of masks becomes compulsory on the 19th July.
The Manager explained that once the measures in place to protect us are lifted, all shop staff will continue to wear masks for a month and customers will be given the choice as to whether they mask up. Mandatory screens will stay for a month and then the shop will reassess. Social distancing and the sanitising of hands are going too.
The Scottish Government have taken the view as other countries have that Covid-19 is on the increase, it’s here to stay, it is vital measures are put in place to keep the world population safe. It’s mad that the UK government would think to the contrary.
I am in an impossible decision, lifting restrictions, with or without the vaccine means I am home for the foreseeable future. It is a fact that a physical covering prevents the spread of Covid-19 and scientists are now coming forward on the back of the Government’s decisions, asking us to continue to mask up.
From The BMA (trade union and professional body for doctors and medical students in the UK) and quoted in the Standard today: “We know that face masks are proven to reduce the spread of this infection. At a time when we have a high level of cases, we cannot understand why we would knowingly want people to become infected.”
I am also immunocompromised. There is no data on whether the current vaccines (and they aren’t without controversy or risk) are suitable for those who are immunocompromised, which is me. I am home. It’s not right that the government are putting me and others in this impossible position.
A survey carried out by the Melbourne Institute in June found that 16% are either unwilling to be vaccinated and 13% don’t know whether they want to be vaccinated. (Source: https://www.theguardian.com)
Everyone is now free to come and go as they please without the use of masks, even though the virus is still spreading and I, like many vulnerable and clinically vulnerable people are forced back into our homes to self-isolate. If I go out, I will wear a mask and put provisions in place to keep myself safe.
It’s madness that anyone would wittingly make a choice to go down this path, which is political. The government have listed all restrictions, but that restriction is the most important, as the world looks on.
