A teacher promised his 1978 class an eclipse party. He just hosted it. by Kyle Melnick
When he started teaching in 1978, Patrick Moriarty passed out worksheets to his science class, showing the trajectories of upcoming eclipses. Only one was expected to pass near their hometown in Upstate New York, but watching it as a class was going to be difficult — it wouldn’t occur for nearly five decades. “Hey, circle that one on April 8, 2024,” Moriarty recalled telling his students. “We’re going to get together on that one.” His students laughed. Thinking that far ahead was difficult for Moriarty — let alone for his junior high students. Still, for years, Moriarty told all of his classes to plan for a gathering that year far in the future. That promise was top of mind when, two years ago, he created a Facebook event and tried to contact his former students. Moriarty didn’t expect them to remember, but as word spread among former classmates, hundreds expressed interest in the event. On April 8, 2024, millions in the path of totality experienced momentary darkness and, for some, a moment of transcendence. (Video: The Washington Post) On Monday, Moriarty fulfilled his promise when about 100 former students watched the total solar eclipse from the driveway of his Rochester, N.Y., home. But ultimately it wasn’t the eclipse that astonished Moriarty — it was his students. “When teachers go into education, they hope that they can be that kind of teacher that would have an impact on people and make a difference for people,” Moriarty, 68, told The Washington Post. “And this event right here just firmed it up for me that I guess I did okay.” After graduating from the State University of New York at Geneseo, Moriarty began teaching earth science as a 22-year-old at a junior high school in Webster, N.Y. He built a reputation as a tough but caring instructor.
He stayed after class to tutor students and cracked jokes when they were nervous about tests. His students said he made subjects they had not cared about — cloud formations, wind trajectories and temperature changes — interesting.
For 16 years, Moriarty told his students that he would put an advertisement in their local newspaper, the Democrat and Chronicle, in 2024 with details about the gathering. His students didn’t think much of it. “The things that you get asked at that age is, ‘Where do you see yourself in five years or 10 years?’” said Kevin Thompson, who took Moriarty’s class in 1982. “To think 40-plus years down the road was almost impossible to comprehend.”
In 1998, Moriarty became a principal of a junior high school in Fairport, N.Y. He never forgot about the plan for the 2024 eclipse, and neither did his students. When he ran into them at local restaurants and stores, he told them they were still going to meet.
By April 2022, sharing events in newspapers wasn’t as common, so Moriarty created a Facebook event and tried to track down his roughly 1,200 former students. He hired a local pizzeria to cater the event.
Within a few months, about 100 former students told him they would attend. Moriarty kept posting updates on Facebook and bought 130 pairs of eclipse glasses. Moriarty began talking with students he had not seen in more than 40 years. Thompson visited Moriarty a few weeks ago and was surprised by how much shorter his former science teacher seemed — since Thompson had grown a few inches since ninth grade. He still called him Mr. Moriarty.
“This has got to be the longest homework assignment in history,” Thompson, now 56, recalled telling Moriarty.
Moriarty said he didn’t recognize some former students who came to his house Monday, but he remembered most of their names. Many had graduated from high school and college, started careers, gotten married and had children since they last spoke.
Former students traveled from across the country and brought their yearbooks for Monday’s event. Moriarty was once again the head of the class, this time in a driveway, telling his former students how the sky would appear as if it was nighttime, the temperature would drop and the automatic lights on some homes would turn on.
When the sky darkened, Moriarty said everyone grew quiet, and they were surprised when it suddenly became bright about four minutes later. The sky was cloudy all afternoon, so no one actually saw the moon. That wasn’t important to Moriarty and his students. “The eclipse itself … took a back seat to what this was all about,” Moriarty said. “The eclipse was my catalyst more than anything.”
As visitors prepared to leave, Moriarty suggested they convene again in two decades, when the next total solar eclipse will occur. Everyone laughed — just like they had in 1978.

Limbaje de scripting: PHP
Tumblr media
How effective content is developed and shared
Effective content is created and shared by first looking at the content and seeing is accessible and relatable to everyone. As Kerri Howell  Chief Communications and Marketing Officer at the State University of New York College at Geneseo said:” If your content isn’t accessible to all then you limit your engagement.” With millions of people that may have hearing or difficulty reading as a content creator, you must take into consideration the variety of factors that people may have in order to maximize your views.  Effective content has a positive and relatable message to the real world. One that can relate to everyone in some way. Great content is developed under the same principles that it takes to share with the world. It needs to have weight and can be understandable to all. This includes having descriptions under photos and videos to show a greater context of that moment. Having videos with high-quality audio that’s easy to hear, and captions on top of the videos that are bold making the words easy to see.
Becoming a social organization falls in line with the principles of effective content. Social organizations promote positivity, inclusiveness, and relatability. This is how organizations grow and without these ideologies behind their post, it will limit the reach and impact they have on communities. Social organizations need to include everyone and if not,  are they even positive organizations that you would want to be a part of? All great social organizations are different in their own way but what they all have in common, is that they are flexible and provide stability within their organization. Here is a great reading from the Harvard Business Review on what common traits inclusive organizations pursue to stay on top of being accessible to all.

“If you had a modicum of intelligence, you should know that what you did, repeatedly, was despicable,”  -- Judge
Thomas Traficante, Federal Inmate 90578-053, born 1996, incarceration intake in 2019 at age 23, discharged from prison 05/17/2021
Cyber-Stalking, Distribution of a Controlled Substance
A college student was jailed to a sentence of four years for terrorizing his ex-girlfriend by posting her information on prostitution sites and mailing drugs to her university address after they broke up
Thomas Traficante, 23, from Long Island, New York, pleaded guilty to cyberstalking and possession of illegal drugs as part of a two-month harassment campaign.
US District Judge David Larimer said Traficante's actions were 'despicable.' If you had a modicum of intelligence, you should know that what you did, repeatedly, was despicable,' Larimer said.
On three occasions Traficante sent drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamines, to the young woman's address at the State University College at Geneseo.  He then called police about the drugs in order to set her up.
She also showed officers texts from Traficante in which he threatened to share her personal information on a prostitution site if 'she did something he strongly disagreed with.’
Traficante then posted her phone number on backpage.com under a category known for prostitution solicitation.  She told authorities that she received more than 60 calls from men in the area asking for sex as a result.
The victim also said her former boyfriend hacked into her Amazon account and sent her a book titled I'm Watching You. He also hacked into her email, cellphone and social media accounts. The woman also claimed Traficante gained access to her school account and took quizzes under her name, and failed on purpose.
In the plea, Traficante also admitted to sending the victim a screen shot of her location and asking 'where she was'.
Traficante was arrested for allegedly terrorizing his ex-girlfriend and about a dozen of her Sigma Kappa sisters.
He also admitted to sending 'numerous threatening text messages to the victim and her classmates and her housemates.
Traficante sent the first threatening text message to his ex-girlfriend and her Sigma Kappa sorority sisters saying 'its [sic] not safe out there tonight kappas [sic]'.
Another message read: 'There are various people among different orgs who have hurt me. My plan is to hurt them.'
About a dozen Sigma Kappa sisters at the university told authorities they received the message.
The sisters said they ended up changing their plans for that evening and postponed their event after they received the text. Authorities said at the time that Traficante sent another text about 24 hours later.
‘Glad [sic] you all mostly took my advice last night, but moving it forward one night doesn't make kappas [sic] or their dates any safer. I mean no harm, im [sic] not the threat, but harm is coming,' the message read.
At one point, Traficante reportedly used a device to alter his voice, telling the woman's roommates 'I'm in the house.' The woman changed her cellphone number, but Traficante was able to find the new one and threaten her further, prosecutors said.
Traficante's ex claimed the man gained access to her school account and took quizzes under her name, and failed on purpose
Traficante and his girlfriend had broken up shortly before the harassment started. Officials said Traficante, who did not attend SUNY Geneseo, did most of the harassment from downstate.
University police checked on the telephone number that had a 585 Rochester-region area code, but found that it was generated by an online service and not linked to a mobile phone.
Traficante's lawyer, said they planned to appeal the conviction and the sentence.

T-Mobile Proposes a Settlement Offer Of $350 million In Response To 2021 Class-Action Lawsuit
By Maeve Morley, State University of New York at Geneseo, Class of 2022
July 29, 2022
Tumblr media
On Friday, T-Mobile US Inc. proposed a settlement offer of $350 million in response to a class-action lawsuit filed by its customers in 2021. Last summer, the company suffered a major cybersecurity attack by a lone hacker, which left millions of its customers’ personal information compromised, including personal identification such as Social Security numbers and driver’s licenses. The cyber attack revealed the company’s overall weak defense system, encouraging them to take the necessary steps to increase its security systems.

T-Mobile Reaches Settlement Over 2021 Data Breach
By Maeve Morley, State University of New York at Geneseo, Class of 2022
July 25, 2022
Tumblr media
In a court filing on Friday, T-Mobile US Inc. agreed to pay a settlement of $350 million in response to the 2021 class-action lawsuit filed by its customers [1]. Last August, the company was forced to announce that it had suffered a major cybersecurity breach, compromising 76.6 million people’s personal data across the country [2].
The breach “exposed highly sensitive data, including customers’ first and last names, Social Security numbers and driver’s license information” [2]. The personal information of the company’s “current, former and prospective customers” was published for sale online [3]. The person responsible was 21-year-old John Binns, an American who moved to Turkey a few years prior [4]. He claimed that the “company’s security practices cleared an easy path for the theft of the data” [3]. In a series of Telegram messages with The Wall Street Journal, Binns claimed he was able to “pierce T-Mobile’s defenses after discovering [the previous month] an unprotected router exposed on the internet” [4]. Prior to his discovery, he had been “scanning T-Mobile’s known internet addresses for weak sports using a simple tool available to the public” [4]. Binns, who “since 2017 has used several online aliases” said “Generating noise was one goal” behind his cyber attack [4].
T-Mobile’s chief executive later apologized for the company’s “failure” to protect its customers and their personal information and promised that they would take the necessary steps to “improve its data safeguards” [3]. Many cybersecurity experts noted the hacker’s efforts revealed that the company’s weak defense system was in “need [of] improvement” [4]. The company’s apology proved to be unsuccessful in mitigating customers’ displeasure over the incident. Moreover, it wasn’t the company’s first rodeo with a security lapse. The breach was the “third major customer data leak that T-Mobile [had] disclosed in the past two years [4].
In the proposed offer, the “mobile phone giant” agreed to pay victims $350 million to settle the class-action lawsuit [2]. The settlement “would pay for claims from class members, legal fees and administrative costs” [2]. In addition, the company “pledged to spend $150 million for security technology in 2022 and 2023” [2]. The individual amount T-Mobile customers would receive is unclear; although “the proposed agreement, filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, stipulates that individual payments cannot exceed $2,500” [3]. If approved by the court, “victims would have 90 days to file a claim detailing out-of-pocket costs and time spent dealing with the breach” [2]. Alternatively, “victims could skip that process and file [a] claim for $25 per person, or $100 if they live in California” [2].
Despite the company’s settlement offer, T-Mobile clarified that it “contains no admission of liability, wrongdoing or responsibility by any of the defendants” [1]. “A T-Mobile spokeswoman said the proposed settlement resolves the consumer class-action suits tied to the hack, adding that the company continues to cooperate with regulators who are separately investigating the incident” [2]. The company “expects court approval of the terms of the settlement as early as December 2022” [1].
