How standards of beauty have changed over time.
Beauty, like many other things, has evolved over time. The methods and products used to achieve standards of beauty have changed, as too have the standards themselves. However, the desire to look and feel beautiful over the years has remained a constant fixation between men and women alike.
Queen Elizabeth I influenced beauty standards and became a model for Elizabethan society, creating a vivid picture of how women were expected to look during this particular era. Pale skin was considered a desirable trait and women went to strenuous lengths to achieve a white complexion. A mixture of white lead and vinegar (Ceruse) was painted across women’s faces and bodies in an attempt to mask their true skin tone and to appear as pale-skinned as possible. Mercuric sulphide was used by women including Queen Elizabeth I as a lipstick. Alana previously raised the question: ‘Is Beauty Dangerous?’ With regards to the Elizabethan society, the desire to be beautiful was something which women unknowingly died for. The lead embedded in their products caused many skin problems and eventually, women began to die of lead poisoning. Consequently, beauty in the Elizabethan era was not just dangerous, it was toxic.
Moving from a time of tight corsets which crushed internal organs to more recently, beauty standards have altered drastically. During the 1950’s in America, Marilyn Monroe became emblematic of what women should look like appearance-wise. Marilyn’s iconic platinum curls became a focal point of her beauty and a must have hairdo for young women trying to replicate the beauty of America’s renowned “it” girl. Marilyn was declared the world’s most beautiful woman while she was alive and thus appeared as a model for society. Her curvy, hourglass figure pinpointed her as a US size 12; a far cry from today’s society where a size 12 may be considered as “not thin enough.”
Similarly, in today’s society, there is an ongoing conflict between having to fit in with beauty standards and those who are adamant that such beauty standards shouldn’t exist. Both men and women feel pressurised to conform to and meet the rigid criteria of being “beautiful”. Celebrities pave the way for beauty standards, however, how much of their beauty is natural? Cosmetic surgery for women and steroids for men are common ways of achieving desired looks but in doing so, they are promoting the advancement of unrealistic and unnatural images of beauty. Photo editing apps are becoming more and more prevalent in the app store. Users of these apps can edit their photos to appear slimmer within minutes, something which is once again unnatural.
A popular clothing brand “Hollister” owned by “Abercrombie and Fitch” admittedly only hire people they consider to be “good looking” in their stores as part of their “employment policy”. As a result, these brands have been labelled by people as brands for beautiful people. “The Guardian” conducted an interview with the brand’s CEO Mike Jeffries who retired in 2014. In his interview, Jeffries stated: “We go after the attractive, all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong.” (“Abercrombie & Fitch: for beautiful people only” The Guardian) Not only has beauty became desired, but in modern society, it has now become a necessity.
In 2003, a California court of appeal case was launched on the same basis of beauty being a requirement in the workplace. In her novel: (Un)Lawfully Beautiful: The Legal (De)Construction of Female Beauty”, Stacey Baron details the case of Yanowitz v L’Oreal USA Inc and how the court concluded that an employer’s order to fire a female cosmetic associate for “not being hot enough” was an act of sex discrimination.
On the other hand, society has adapted to accept that beauty comes in an array of shapes and sizes as demonstrated by Dove who launched a “campaign for real beauty”. Virginia Postrel mentions the campaign which features women of all skin tones and sizes in her article: “The Truth about Beauty”. During a press release, Dove stated that the campaign is a: “global effort that is intended to serve as a starting point for societal change and act as a catalyst for widening the definition and discussion of beauty.” Dove’s main ambition is to put a universal stamp on beauty. Consequently, the beauty standards where we should all be cardboard cut-outs of each other are being set aside to allow for variations of beauty. Plus sized models are taking the spotlight, eliminating the notion that you have to be a size 0 to qualify and more recently, clothing websites have stopped airbrushing their models to remove stretch marks and any other visible “flaw”.
Beauty standards will never cease to exist, however, the rules and regulations that underline how we all have to look a certain way to be deemed as “beautiful” are quickly becoming outdated. Beauty has taken a more individualistic stance in a society who has finally begun to accept that beauty comes in varying forms.

Today the light wanted to come through Today I mailed out my grief in shiny gold envelopes Today I found a long black strand of hair in my clothing and held it up to the light Today I couldn’t see the future but I heard it like a branch snapping Today I text the sky 'I don’t want this'

Stacey Marinkovich defends controversial Nat Medhurst departure
Stacey Marinkovich defends controversial Nat Medhurst departure
West Coast Fever coach Stacey Marinkovich concedes there is only one Nat Medhurst.
But Marinkovich defended the decision to let her go, and says Fever can push for a premiership in 2019 after backing in young talent.
Alice Teague-Neeld, 22, will be the new face in the goal circle after being lured from Collingwood, but Marinkovich insisted the young Victorian should not be expected to provide…

Poems Seem Impossible: An Interview With Stacey Teague
Poems Seem Impossible: An Interview With Stacey Teague
Tell me a little bit about the creation of your new mini-chapbook, Not A Casual Solitude. I didn’t intend for these poems to be in a collection, but I started writing poems which shared that form, and I guess they all have a similar feel. I was inspired to write in that way after reading a book called ‘Sorrow Arrow’ by Emily Kendal Frey (recommend!). That was my starting off point, but the result…

Spring (2011) by Stacey Teague
This is the zine I think about the most when I get inspired to make a new one. It's really cheerful and has these lovely profound bits on 'fear' and 'being afraid', and then writing on her favourite birds, poetry, and hand-drawn pictures. Spring is so personal but the feelings are universal it's like this zine a little door left open, welcoming the reader to come and go as they please.
Zines’ of Year’s Past review by Alice May Connolloy, Wellington Zinefest Committee.
Each print annual we ask zine-makers from around the country to share with us a zine that’s made an impact on them, from years gone by. This review features in our NZZR print annual #1, 2013.

Poems: Stacey Teague
is it the sea you hear in me
the days move quickly, like the current of the river impatient to get to the mouth, that opens into the sea
there are so many things life is moving towards, and away from
the body closer, and further from any other
i’ve been wanting to commit myself to some thing, some kind of permanence
but i have the habits of a transient could put on my big blue scarf and walk into a different wilderness
i imagine another life where he is out in the garden planting strawberry seeds while i eye him from the window
i cried when i read birthday letters, on a big rock near where the river ends, and the ocean begins
the water slamming itself up against the mossy stone
spitting its fizz at me
