Returning character showcase time! Sonic reunites with his uncle, even though its semi-retconned that he is just a metaphorical uncle figure now. He looks even more like just Sonic with a beard, but they kept his brown shoes and lighter fur tone from the cartoon! It helps them be distinguishable from the blue blur a little bit.

As already-noted on the cover, we’re reintroduced to Antoine D’Coolette, completely un-knocked out and with the others happy to see him well and good. The Frenchy fighter’s gone through a little bit of a colour change that might take a little getting used to, and there’s clearly also the Sega mandate on male characters not needing clothes.

Also there’s Sonic’s dog Muttski!

“Yo, Sonic. Wasn’t that your fuckin pet in the previous universe?“

Antoine also gets his memory back thanks to the arc’s plot McGuffin, and to him it comes to even more because he was in a near-death-induced coma the last time we saw him. Him being overwhelmed to the point of stuttering is totally understandable.

Also, not pictured, but pretty much the first thing Antoine does after getting a flashback of memories is wanting to seek out and reunite with Bunnie again, and I think that’s pretty hecking sweet

The effects of the Genesis Wave is still felt around the planet in the form of huge fissures and earthquakes, which puts the heroes on edge for a little while.

Antoine can also do that cool “sword spin-attack” that we saw Sonic do back when he used a sword for a little while ago.

Eggman is so badass that the first thing he does after getting the resources is recreate his old Egg Walker, singlehanded take on G.U.N on their ship like its Weapons Bed all over again, and leave it to explode while nicking one of their fighter jets. I’m not making any of that up.

After nor much happening except for characters moving into place for the next issue’s events, this story ends on another cliff-hanger concerning one of the female members of the Knothole Freedom Fighters. This time, Bunnie’s undercover in an Egg Army faction. Yeah, it says in the caption that she “might be a spy”, but I ain’t believing that for a second!

The way we see Bunnie again knee-deep in Eggman’s forces is strangely paralleled to where she was before the reboot, where she returned to her uncle Beauregard Rabbot to get converted back into a half-cyborg.

I don’t remember much of what occurs in the next issue, but stay tuned for Sonic and co entering Metropolis Zone!

In the chaos, Sonic accidently inhales some of the dark smoke stuff Uncle Chuck was delicately researching, and this seems to be subtly hinting at his eventual transformation into the Werehog? I guess this is an okay substitute, but nothing can compare to how he got it in Sonic Unleash’s badass intro cutscene!

Mordred Hood here is much less of a threatening presence in the post-reboot. Maybe its because he’s getting an unexpected visit from his boss, or the fact that he’s opposed against way more good guys (G.U.N, the woodland Freedom Fighters), but he comes off as much more cowardly in this incarnation. I kinda prefer it, as “snake despot who hypnotizes people” never really caught my interest.

Last time, we saw Eggman making his way across Mobius in a makeshift Eggmobile, and now he’s got G.U.N on his ass. Don’t worry Eggy, I hated those super-fast planes in SA2 too.

He’s off to a nearby Egg Army base; and yes, it is shaped like his face.

This issue is very much “that one in-between more important ones” in terms of story, but there’s a couple of cool things I wanna go over while re-reading #254!
