Yarmouth is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, located twelve miles north of the state’s largest city, Portland. The town was settled in 1636 and incorporated in 1849. Its population was 8,349 in the 2010 census. As of 2015’s estimation, this is about 0.6% of Maine’s total population. Five islands (most notably Cousins Island and Littlejohn Island) are part of the town.

Ships were built in the harbor mainly between 1818 and the 1870s, at which point demand declined dramatically. Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.94 square miles (59.41 km2), of which 13.35 square miles (34.58 km2) (58%) is land and 9.59 square miles (24.84 km2) (42%) is water.

Yarmouth is nearly square in form and is bisected by the Royal River (formerly Yarmouth River). The Cousins River separates it from Freeport to the northeast; Freeport and Pownal bound it to the east; North Yarmouth to the north; Cumberland to the west; and Casco Bay to the south. Also included as part of the town are Cousins Island, Lanes Island, Great and Little Moshier Islands, and Littlejohn Island.

History

Traces of human occupation in the Yarmouth area date to about 2,000 BC. During the years prior to the arrival of the Europeans, many Native American cultures existed in the area, largely because of the natural features of the coastal land. Rivers provided several resources, including food, fertile soil, power for the mills and the navigability between the inland areas and the ocean.

In 1640, a 39-year-old Englishman, George Felt (b. 1601, d. 1693), who emigrated to Charlestown, Massachusetts, seven years earlier, purchased 300 acres of land at Broad Cove from John Phillips (b. 1607, d. c. 1667), a Welshman, and in 1643 became one of the first European settlers in Yarmouth. Felt went back to Massachusetts to sell his property there, before returning to Broad Cove around 1660. In 1670 he bought 2,000 more acres of land from Phillips.

Felt was married to Elizabeth, with whom he had six children: Elizabeth (b. circa 1635), George (b. 1638, d. 1676), Mary (b. circa 1639), Moses (b. 1641), Aaron and another Moses (b. circa 1651). In 1684, Felt moved back to Massachusetts. He returned briefly, after 1678, when he was around 80 years old.

In 1646, Englishman William Royall (b. circa 1595, d. 1676) purchased a farm at what is now the upscale Lambert Point, next to Redding Creek, at the southern tip of Lambert Road, where he lived with his wife, Phoebe Green. The Royal River has ever-since borne his name, minus the second L, though two streets off Gilman Road — Royall Meadow Road and Royall Point Road — carry the original spelling. This stream and its vicinity were called by the Indians “Westcustogo” — a name that, until the early 1990s, was preserved by an inn of the same name on Princes Point Road at its intersection with Lafayette Street. (The building remains but it is now occupied by another business.) Royall moved to Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1675, a year before his death. John Cousins (b. circa 1596, d. 1682) had arrived a year or more earlier than Royall, occupying the neck of land between the branches of the stream which has since been called Cousins River, and owning the island now also bearing his name.

By 1676, approximately sixty-five people lived in Westcustogo. Soon after, however, conflicts forged by King Philip’s War caused them to abandon their homes and move south.John Cousins was injured and went to York, Maine, to receive treatment. There, he lived with Mary Saywood, to whom he later deeded his real estate in Casco Bay.

Also in 1676, George Felt Jr. was killed on Peaks Island during the conflicts. Felt’s wife, Philippe, moved to Salem, Massachusetts, where she married twice before her death in 1709.

Some settlers returned to their dwellings in 1679, and within twelve months the region became incorporated as North Yarmouth, the eighth town of the province of Maine.

In 1688, while the inhabitants on the eastern side of the river were building a garrison, they were attacked by Indians, and attempted a defense. They continued the contest until nightfall, when the Indians retired. It was not long before they appeared again, in such force that the thirty-six families of the settlement were forced to flee, abandoning their homes for a second time.

Transportation

Road

U.S. Route 1 arrived in the late 1940s (at grade and also a bridge over Main Street). State Route 88 follows the course of Route 1’s predecessor, the Atlantic Highway. SR 115, established in 1925, also runs through the town.

In 1961, the Yarmouth section of Interstate 295 was built. It runs elevated through town (including, in controversial fashion, over the harborside at Lower Falls). It has two exits (15 and 17) in the town. Exit 15 became a four-ramp intersection in July 2013, when a northbound on-ramp was added.

In 1727, five local men — Samuel Seabury, James Parker, Jacob Mitchell, Gershom Rice and Phineas Jones — were tasked with the management of the new town. Their affairs included laying out the highways. Roads (or, at least, routes) that appeared on subsequent maps are as follows (with today’s names):

In 1738, “a good road was built over the ledge from the meeting-house to the mills at the first falls which, although it was abandoned about 1800 for a less hilly course, may still be easily traced.”

1741: Atlantic Highway (now Route 88; which took a left onto Pleasant Street), Gilman Road, Princes Point Road, Highlands Farm Road (leading to Parker’s Point), Drinkwater Point Road (which led to two wharves), Morton Road and Old Town Landing Road (which led to another wharf). Large lot owners at the time included Walter Gendall, whose farm incorporated Duck Cove, beyond Town Landing Road in today’s Cumberland Foreside (Cumberland was not incorporated as its own town until 1821). Its dry stone boundary is still intact. Welshman John Powell (b. c. 1669, d. 1742) had a farm where today’s Schooner Ridge Road is. John Dabney’s 60-acre lot abutted this to the east. Dabney was a town selectman in 1737. Felt had a lot at the foot of the northern end of Pleasant Street, adjacent to Stony Brook. Royall’s farm, meanwhile, occupied the entire area bisected by Bayview Street.

In 1756, “to accommodate the teams hauling lumber from the great pine forests inland to the seaboard, a new more convenient way was laid out by the way of Walnut Hill and the road constructed.”

In 1813, down at the First Falls, “the old road which clambered laboriously over the crest of the hill was replaced by a new street along the head of the wharves below the hill”. This is today’s Pleasant Street. Later, Smith Street became an uninterrupted offshoot into Riverside Cemetery until Lafayette Street was built, in the early 20th century, coming down the hill closer to the harbor. (It was named Lafayette Street in honor of General Lafayette.)

By 1847, Portland Street was in full swing, including the Elm Street offshoot that headed directly into the Upper Village. Main Street was, by now, well established.

A 1944 map shows the Atlantic Highway coming through town, aligning with what became Route 88 up to the point they meet at the end of Spring Street. Prior to the installation of U.S. Route 1, today’s curve of Route 88 as it passes Cumberland Farms instead continued directly north-east towards Cousins River. The section of Atlantic Highway that runs from Princes Point Road to the northern end of Pleasant Street was laid in the late 1920s.

Roswell P. Greeley (b. 1847, d. 1903) established an express service between Portland and Yarmouth, employing a span of horses and large wagons. Azel Kingsley (b. 1860, d. 1948) ran a supplemental service minus the horses. It ran two services in each direction: southbound at 7.30 and 11.30 AM and northbound at 3.00 and 5.00 PM.

Rail

The town has two railroad junctions: Royal Junction (midway along Greely Road) and Yarmouth Junction (to the west of East Elm Street at Depot Road; its station is now gone). The Brunswick Branch of the Maine Central Railroad received a new lease of life in November 2012, when a northern extension of the Downeaster line was opened, carrying passengers five times a day (four on weekends) to and from Brunswick‘s Maine Street Station. The trains pass under two roads and over three crossings on their way through Yarmouth. They are (from south to north) West Main Street (overpass, just after Royal Junction), Sligo Road (road crossing), East Elm Street (road crossing, just after Yarmouth Junction), North Road (road crossing) and Granite Street (overpass).

On weekdays, the trains pass through northbound at 12.03 PM (#681), 4.03 PM (#683), 7.53 PM (#685), 9.18 PM (#687) and 1.23 AM (#689). On weekends, they pass through at 1.23 PM (#691), 7.43 PM (#695), 10.23 PM (#697) and 1.23 AM (#699).

Southbound weekday times: 4.50 AM (#680), 7.50 AM (#682), 11.30 AM (#684), 1.50 PM (#686) and 5.45 PM (#688). Weekend: 6.20 AM (#690), 7.50 AM (#692), 11.40 AM (#694) and 6.25 PM (#698).

Trolley cars of the Portland and Yarmouth Electric Railway Company used to run, every fifteen minutes, from Portland, through Falmouth Foreside, up and down Pleasant Street and onto Main Street between 1898 and 1933, when the advent of the automobile made rail travel a less convenient option. Underwood Spring Park in Falmouth Foreside, with its open-air theater, casino and gazebo, was a popular gathering spot serviced by the trolley cars. The theater only existed for eight years, burning down in 1907. In 1906, a bridge was built over the Royal River, connecting the Brunswick and Portland trolleys at the Grand Trunk depot in town. The tracks ran down what is today’s walkers’ path to the Rowe School. The pedestrian bridge in the Royal River Park is built on old abutments for a trolley line which ran between Yarmouth and Freeport between 1906 and 1933.

Bus

The only bus route that services the town is Greater Portland Metro’s BREEZ. It has eleven southbound services to Portland and twelve northbound services to Brunswick on weekdays and an abbreviated Saturday schedule. There is no service on Sundays.

Richard Triplett, 74

Richard David Triplett, age 74, of Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, April 29, 2019 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born August 14, 1944 in Wilkes County to Bascum and Edna Daniels Triplett. Mr. Triplett was a member of Decision Independent Baptist Church and was foreman with Broyhill Furniture for 22 years. Mr. Triplett was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Bascum Triplett, Jr., Steve Triplett and Kelly Triplett.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hawkins Triplett; children, Rickie Triplett and spouse Andrea of Wilkesboro, Crystal Eller and spouse Terry of Moravian Falls, Eric Triplett and spouse Tammy of Ferguson; grandchildren, Michelle Staley and spouse Nathaniel, Jeremiah Triplett, Tate Eller and spouse Megan, Coty Eller, Monica Eller, Jacob Triplett, Cindy Hartley, Josh Kilby; great grandchildren, Ava Staley, Maggie Staley and Ellie Phillips.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Miller Funeral Chapel with Pastor Hoss Moore and Pastor Rickie Triplett officiating. Burial will follow in Moravian Falls Cemetery.   James Hendren, 86

James Dwight Hendren, age 86, of Moravian Falls, passed away Friday, April 26, 2019 at his home. Mr. Hendren was born June 21, 1932 in Wilkes County to Maurice Lee and Lulie James Hendren.

He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Moravian Falls and employed by the State of North  Carolina for 30 years.

Mr. Hendren was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Thomas Edward Hendren.

Surviving are his wife, Janet Martin Hendren; daughter, Renee Hendren-Deal and husband Terry of Taylorsville; son, Kevin Hendren and partner Suzanne of Statesville; grandchildren, Josh Deal, Kala Cline and husband Nathaniel all of Taylorsville; great grandson, Cullen Cline of Taylorsville.

Graveside service was April 29,  at Old Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery in Moravian Falls with Rev. Roger Elmore officiating.

 Charles Estep, 63

Charles Dean Estep, age 63, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Alamance Caswell Hospice Home after a short battle with cancer. He was born November 22, 1955 in Wilkes County to Raymond Arthur and Maie Shew Estep. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Ray Estep; and sisters, Rachael Laws and Brenda Bailey.

Surviving are his sisters, Claudette Hamby Terry of Orlando, Florida, Mary Sue Durham of Burlington, North Carolina, Agnes E. Church and spouse Henry A. Church, Jr. of St. Helena Island, South Carolina; many nieces, nephews and other family.

Some of his favorite hobbies included fishing, gardening, working outside, and helping others. Dean spent many years caring for his mother and oldest sister. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

Graveside service was April 28,   at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Moravian Falls.

 Steve Barber, 69

Rev. Steve Edward Barber, age 69, of Hamptonville, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. He was born July 18, 1949 in Surry County to Clarence Elmer and Lonnie Martin Barber.

Rev. Barber was a US Army Veteran serving in Vietnam and Germany. He was a member of Old Fashion Baptist Church.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lonnie Elmer Barber and Gary Thomas Barber, Sr.; and granddaughter, Ella Kilby.

Surviving are his wife, Laura Ruth Triplett Barber; daughters, Teresa Kilby and spouse Jarrett of Hamptonville, Cynthia Barber of Winston Salem; grandchildren, Matthew Crane and Dash Kilby; sister, Louise Pardue of Jonesville; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard Post 1142 was   April 28,   at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Clingman with Rev. Ricky Cothren, Rev. Kevin Blevins and Rev. Johnny Arnold officiating.

  Maggie Williams, 98

Maggie Mae "Jane" Williams, age 98 of Wilkesboro entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, April 24 at Curis of Wilkesboro.

Funeral services were April 27,   at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel.  Burial was in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Maggie was born September 8, 1920 in Wilkes County to Charles and Julie Shew Williams.  Maggie was a simple frugal woman always ready to lend a hand to someone else. She was always content with her life, always a big smile for others.  Her favorite pastimes were cooking, putting up gardening vegetables in cans, having a cup of coffee with visitors and chatting on the phone. Maggie worked for Holly Farms/Tyson for 28 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and several brothers and sisters.  

She is survived by a daughter; Elizabeth Cox of Wilkesboro, granddaughter Kayla Cox of Wilkesboro, one sister; Sadie Eller and husband Frank of Purlear. .

  George Snyder, 85

Mr. George Paul "Red" Snyder, age 85 of Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at his home.

Funeral services were held  April 27,  at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church where he was a member with Rev. Chris Lakey   officiating. Burial was in Mountain Park Cemetery.  

Mr. Snyder was born June 12, 1933 in Wilkes County to Donald V. Snyder and Mattie Lodemia McNeil Snyder. He served in the US Army - 11th Airborne Division during the Korean War.          

He retired from Tyson Foods as the Vice President of Deli Sales. Mr. Snyder was recipient of "The Order of the Long Leaf Pine" for outstanding community service -1997.  Community Service included: Commissioner Town of Wilkesboro - 24 years (8 years Mayor Pro-Tem); Member of Wilkes Airport Authority; Member of the Wilkes Community College Endowment Board; Member of the Watts Retreat Commission; Region D Council of Government Board; former Member of North Wilkesboro Rotary Club, Santa Claus for Wilkes County Parade 20-plus years; Honorary Wilkesboro Fireman and Tyson Salesperson of the Year.

During his service with Holly Farms, Mr. Snyder cooked with Dinah Shore and cooked for dignitaries such as President Ronald Reagan who offered him a job to cook for him at the Whitehouse, and others celebrities, sport figures, NASCAR race drivers, his neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters; Clara Snyder Church and Martha Snyder Elbe.

Mr. Snyder is survived by his wife; Madge Snyder of the home and a son; George Snyder, II and wife Camie of Matthews.

  Bernice Wyatt, 84

Bernice Douglas Wyatt, age 84, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Wilkes Senior Village. She was born September 16, 1934 in Wilkes County to Walter and Allie Roberts Douglas. Bernice was a member of Center Baptist Church. She served as a foster grandparent with Mulberry Elementary School and a volunteer at Hospice.

Mrs. Wyatt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, R.G. Wyatt; brothers, Robert Bud Douglas, Ray Douglas, Troy Douglas and an infant sister.

Surviving are her sons, David Wyatt and spouse Jean of North Wilkesboro, Tommy Ray Wyatt and spouse Lila of Millers Creek; grandsons, Aaron Wyatt and spouse Heather of Hillsborough, Adam Wyatt and spouse Sarah of North Wilkesboro, Anthony Wyatt and spouse Meredith of Cincinnati, Ohio; great grandchildren, Mason Wyatt, Avery Wyatt; sister, Annie Wyatt of North Wilkesboro; several nieces and nephews.

   Jay Parker, 92

Mr. Jay Calvin Parker, age 92 of Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Westwood Hills Nursing.

Funeral services were April 29,   at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Dr. Chris Hefner officiating. Entombment was held in Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.  

Mr. Parker was born June 4, 1926 in Wilkes County to Dewey Rufus and Christine Anderson Parker. He was the retired partner/owner of Parker Electric and Plumbing Company. Jay joined the Wilkesboro Fire Department in 1942, where he served the residents of Wilkesboro for 45 years. He served as Fire Chief for 7 years 1980-1987.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother; Bob Lee Parker.

Mr. Parker is survived by his wife Betty Jean Myers Parker of the home, a daughter; Ina Jean Parker of Wilkesboro, Nieces and Nephews; Lee Parker of Wilkesboro, Ginger Parker Shaffer of California and Beth Parker Handcuff of Hickory.

Linda Teresa Harris Hall, age 56, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at her home. She was born April 27, 1962 in Wilkes County to Richard and Lucille Dillard Harris. Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her husband, Randy Hall; son, Randy Scott Hall and spouse Autumn of Ronda; grandchild, Adrianna Belle Hall; special great nephew, Bradley Harris of North Wilkesboro; sisters, Brenda Lunsford and Debbie Shew both of Roaring River; and brother, Jeff Harris of Taylorsville.

   Billy Johnson, 71

Billy Joe Johnson, age 71, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at his home. He was born January 5, 1948 in Wilkes County to Otha and Grace Long Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a US Army Veteran and a member of Mtn. View Baptist Church in Windy Gap. He loved his grandchildren, hunting, gardening and racing. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leon Johnson; and sisters, Foda Gregory, Peg Thompson and Nancy Ivey.

Surviving are his wife, Sharon Smith Johnson; son, John Matthew Johnson and spouse Autumn of Wilkesboro; daughter, Marcia Johnson of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Austin Johnson, Trevor Johnson, Silas Cooke, Jake Cooke; and a very special friend, Grady Oakley of Hamptonville.

Funeral service was  April 27,  at Mtn. View Baptist Church in the Windy Gap Community with Rev. William Souther and Grady Oakley officiating.                Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Carolina Emily Baldwin, 35, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, April 22, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health - Wilkes Medical Center.

Carolina was born Tuesday, November 22, 1983 in Caldwell County to the late Samuel Curtis Baldwin and Sandra Kay Braswell Baldwin.

Those left to cherish her memory include: her daughters, Chelsey Bodford, Prescilla Bodford, and Katelynn Bodford, all of the home; sister, Samanthia Baldwin of Granite Falls; brothers, Ralph Baldwin of Oregon and Allen Braswell of Granite Falls; fiancé Elvis Redmon.

The family will conduct a memorial service at 10:00 am, Friday, April 26, 2019 at Living Grace Chapel, 1006 Byrd  Ridge Road, North Wilkesboro.  Pastor David Dyer will be officiating.

Mr. Daniel Bruce Souther, age 69 of Winston Salem, previously of North Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, April 21, 2019 at SECU Hospice Home of Yadkinville.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Windy Gap with Rev. Benny Romans and Rev. David Wellborn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Souther was born February 21, 1950 in Wilkes County to Zeb Royist Souther and wife Martha Ellen York Souther. He was retired form JP Stevens.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Jerry Souther.

Mr. Souther is survived by his wife; Geneva Matilda Call Souther of the home, a daughter; Danielle Souther Scarlett and husband Harold of Olin, NC, a grandchild; Devlin Scarlett, three sisters; Millicent Estes and husband Clyde of Stony Point, Carolyn Flanagan and husband Joe of Mocksville and Ellen Mastin and husband Dane of Wilkesboro, three brothers; John Souther and wife Sharon, Isaac Souther and wife Diane and Terry Souther and wife Karen all of North Wilkesboro, his special nurse; Martha Ellen and several nieces and nephews.

   Rev. Mace Dean Johnson,  84

Rev. Mace Dean Johnson, age 84 of Millers Creek, a Baptist Minister and Veteran, finished his earthly life on Monday, April 22, 2019, at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, April 25, 2019, at Union Baptist Church in Wilbar with Rev. Steve Faw, Rev. Julius Blevins and Dr. Galen Johnson officiating. The body will be lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00. Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 Honor Guard will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 Wednesday evening at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Rev. Johnson was born May 14, 1934, in Wilkes County to John Hampton Johnson and Nancy Louellen Reeves Johnson. He served three years (1953-1956) in the U.S. Army with the 187th Airborne Division. He also served as FA Crewman. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War, and encountered a horrifying experience over the ocean flying back to the states when the crew was ordered to ditch all their belongings.

Rev. Johnson attended Millers Creek School, Wilkes Community College, and received his Master of Divinity Degree from Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute. He was a Baptist Minister and served as Pastor over 40 years. The Baptist Churches he served were Bethany, 3 years, Mountain Valley, 14 ½ years, Mt. Pisgah, 18 months, Walnut Grove, 11 years, Orion in Ashe County, over 5 years, and lastly interim at Maple Grove almost 3 years. He also served as Director of Missions in the Stone Mountain Baptist Association for 18 months. He did Mission Trips to New Mexico and Chile, South America, and was blessed to preach in Israel. He performed many weddings and had part in over 800 funerals. He also served as Chaplain of Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard over 5 years, which he loved. He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Wilbar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son; Steven Johnson, a grandson; Michael Johnson, six brothers; George, Andrew, Fred, Henry, Joe and Ben Johnson, three sisters; Cora Johnson, Louise Woodie Jolly and Mamie Hamby.

Rev. Johnson is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bennie Hamby Johnson, two sons; Gregory Johnson and wife Lisa of Millers Creek and Galen Johnson and wife Lori of Siloam Springs, Ark., a daughter-in-law; Nancy Johnson of Wilkesboro, three grandchildren; Barry Johnson and wife Melissa of Traphill, Jonathan Johnson of Wilkesboro, and Caroline Johnson of Siloam Springs, Ark., and three great grandchildren; Coby Johnson, Devin Johnson and Macee Johnson all of Boomer.

She was born August 17, 1926 in Chatham County to Marvin Durham Stinson and Mary Catherine Benner Stinson. Mrs. Payne was a graduate of Ramseur High School, previously employed with Wilkes Community  College and a member of North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church. Lula was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Lawrence Payne; son, Ronald Timothy Payne "Timmy"; grandson, Brandon Christopher Payne; brothers, Henry and John Stinson; sisters, Mary Dean Stinson, Elizabeth Rinehardt, Lillie Nance; and beloved sister-in-law, Katie Petty.

Andrew was born on Thursday, January 7, 1971 in Wilkes County to the late A.D. Triplett and Ella Sue Anderson Barker.

Yarmouth is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, located twelve miles north of the state’s largest city, Portland. The town was settled in 1636 and incorporated in 1849. Its population was 8,349 in the 2010 census. As of 2015’s estimation, this is about 0.6% of Maine’s total population. Five islands (most notably Cousins Island and Littlejohn Island) are part of the town.

Yarmouth is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, and its location on the banks of the Royal River, which empties into Casco Bay less than a mile away, means it is a prime location as a harbor. Ships were built in the harbor mainly between 1818 and the 1870s, at which point demand declined dramatically. Meanwhile, the Royal River’s four waterfalls within Yarmouth, whose Main Street sits about 80 feet above sea level, resulted in the foundation of almost sixty mills between 1674 and 1931.

The annual Yarmouth Clam Festival attracts around 120,000 people (around fourteen times its population) over the course of the three-day weekend.

Today, Yarmouth is a popular dining destination, with (as of February 2019) fourteen sit-down restaurants. This equates to an average of just over one restaurant per square mile of land area.

The town is accessed via two exits (15 and 17) on each side of Interstate 295. U.S. Route 1 also passes through the town to the west of I-295.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.94 square miles (59.41 km2), of which 13.35 square miles (34.58 km2) (58%) is land and 9.59 square miles (24.84 km2) (42%) is water.

Yarmouth is nearly square in form and is bisected by the Royal River (formerly Yarmouth River). The Cousins River separates it from Freeport to the northeast; Freeport and Pownal bound it to the east; North Yarmouth to the north; Cumberland to the west; and Casco Bay to the south. Also included as part of the town are Cousins Island, Lanes Island, Great and Little Moshier Islands, and Littlejohn Island.

History

Traces of human occupation in the Yarmouth area date to about 2,000 BC. During the years prior to the arrival of the Europeans, many Native American cultures existed in the area, largely because of the natural features of the coastal land. Rivers provided several resources, including food, fertile soil, power for the mills and the navigability between the inland areas and the ocean.

In 1640, a 39-year-old Englishman, George Felt (b. 1601, d. 1693), who emigrated to Charlestown, Massachusetts, seven years earlier, purchased 300 acres of land at Broad Cove from John Phillips (b. 1607, d. c. 1667), a Welshman, and in 1643 became one of the first European settlers in Yarmouth. Felt went back to Massachusetts to sell his property there, before returning to Broad Cove around 1660. In 1670 he bought 2,000 more acres of land from Phillips.

Felt was married to Elizabeth, with whom he had six children: Elizabeth (b. circa 1635), George (b. 1638, d. 1676), Mary (b. circa 1639), Moses (b. 1641), Aaron and another Moses (b. circa 1651). In 1684, Felt moved back to Massachusetts. He returned briefly, after 1678, when he was around 80 years old.

In 1646, Englishman William Royall (b. circa 1595, d. 1676) purchased a farm at what is now the upscale Lambert Point, next to Redding Creek, at the southern tip of Lambert Road, where he lived with his wife, Phoebe Green. The Royal River has ever-since borne his name, minus the second L, though two streets off Gilman Road — Royall Meadow Road and Royall Point Road — carry the original spelling. This stream and its vicinity were called by the Indians “Westcustogo” — a name that, until the early 1990s, was preserved by an inn of the same name on Princes Point Road at its intersection with Lafayette Street. (The building remains but it is now occupied by another business.) Royall moved to Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1675, a year before his death. John Cousins (b. circa 1596, d. 1682) had arrived a year or more earlier than Royall, occupying the neck of land between the branches of the stream which has since been called Cousins River, and owning the island now also bearing his name.

By 1676, approximately sixty-five people lived in Westcustogo. Soon after, however, conflicts forged by King Philip’s War caused them to abandon their homes and move south.John Cousins was injured and went to York, Maine, to receive treatment. There, he lived with Mary Saywood, to whom he later deeded his real estate in Casco Bay.

Also in 1676, George Felt Jr. was killed on Peaks Island during the conflicts. Felt’s wife, Philippe, moved to Salem, Massachusetts, where she married twice before her death in 1709.

Some settlers returned to their dwellings in 1679, and within twelve months the region became incorporated as North Yarmouth, the eighth town of the province of Maine.

In 1688, while the inhabitants on the eastern side of the river were building a garrison, they were attacked by Indians, and attempted a defense. They continued the contest until nightfall, when the Indians retired. It was not long before they appeared again, in such force that the thirty-six families of the settlement were forced to flee, abandoning their homes for a second time.

Transportation

Beaverton Airporter know Grand Trunk Railway Station(1906), most recently (until 2018) a florist, is owned by Yarmouth’s Village Improvement Society. The apsidal form of its northern end is found in no other Maine station. Road

U.S. Route 1 arrived in the late 1940s (at grade and also a bridge over Main Street). State Route 88 follows the course of Route 1’s predecessor, the Atlantic Highway. SR 115, established in 1925, also runs through the town.

In 1961, the Yarmouth section of Interstate 295 was built. It runs elevated through town (including, in controversial fashion, over the harborside at Lower Falls). It has two exits (15 and 17) in the town. Exit 15 became a four-ramp intersection in July 2013, when a northbound on-ramp was added.

In 1727, five local men — Samuel Seabury, James Parker, Jacob Mitchell, Gershom Rice and Phineas Jones — were tasked with the management of the new town. Their affairs included laying out the highways. Roads (or, at least, routes) that appeared on subsequent maps are as follows (with today’s names):

In 1738, “a good road was built over the ledge from the meeting-house to the mills at the first falls which, although it was abandoned about 1800 for a less hilly course, may still be easily traced.”

1741: Atlantic Highway (now Route 88; which took a left onto Pleasant Street), Gilman Road, Princes Point Road, Highlands Farm Road (leading to Parker’s Point), Drinkwater Point Road (which led to two wharves), Morton Road and Old Town Landing Road (which led to another wharf). Large lot owners at the time included Walter Gendall, whose farm incorporated Duck Cove, beyond Town Landing Road in today’s Cumberland Foreside (Cumberland was not incorporated as its own town until 1821). Its dry stone boundary is still intact. Welshman John Powell (b. c. 1669, d. 1742) had a farm where today’s Schooner Ridge Road is. John Dabney’s 60-acre lot abutted this to the east. Dabney was a town selectman in 1737. Felt had a lot at the foot of the northern end of Pleasant Street, adjacent to Stony Brook. Royall’s farm, meanwhile, occupied the entire area bisected by Bayview Street.

In 1756, “to accommodate the teams hauling lumber from the great pine forests inland to the seaboard, a new more convenient way was laid out by the way of Walnut Hill and the road constructed.”

In 1813, down at the First Falls, “the old road which clambered laboriously over the crest of the hill was replaced by a new street along the head of the wharves below the hill”. This is today’s Pleasant Street. Later, Smith Street became an uninterrupted offshoot into Riverside Cemetery until Lafayette Street was built, in the early 20th century, coming down the hill closer to the harbor. (It was named Lafayette Street in honor of General Lafayette.)

By 1847, Portland Street was in full swing, including the Elm Street offshoot that headed directly into the Upper Village. Main Street was, by now, well established.

A 1944 map shows the Atlantic Highway coming through town, aligning with what became Route 88 up to the point they meet at the end of Spring Street. Prior to the installation of U.S. Route 1, today’s curve of Route 88 as it passes Cumberland Farms instead continued directly north-east towards Cousins River. The section of Atlantic Highway that runs from Princes Point Road to the northern end of Pleasant Street was laid in the late 1920s.

Roswell P. Greeley (b. 1847, d. 1903) established an express service between Portland and Yarmouth, employing a span of horses and large wagons. Azel Kingsley (b. 1860, d. 1948) ran a supplemental service minus the horses. It ran two services in each direction: southbound at 7.30 and 11.30 AM and northbound at 3.00 and 5.00 PM.

Rail

The town has two railroad junctions: Royal Junction (midway along Greely Road) and Yarmouth Junction (to the west of East Elm Street at Depot Road; its station is now gone). The Brunswick Branch of the Maine Central Railroad received a new lease of life in November 2012, when a northern extension of the Downeaster line was opened, carrying passengers five times a day (four on weekends) to and from Brunswick‘s Maine Street Station. The trains pass under two roads and over three crossings on their way through Yarmouth. They are (from south to north) West Main Street (overpass, just after Royal Junction), Sligo Road (road crossing), East Elm Street (road crossing, just after Yarmouth Junction), North Road (road crossing) and Granite Street (overpass).

On weekdays, the trains pass through northbound at 12.03 PM (#681), 4.03 PM (#683), 7.53 PM (#685), 9.18 PM (#687) and 1.23 AM (#689). On weekends, they pass through at 1.23 PM (#691), 7.43 PM (#695), 10.23 PM (#697) and 1.23 AM (#699).

Southbound weekday times: 4.50 AM (#680), 7.50 AM (#682), 11.30 AM (#684), 1.50 PM (#686) and 5.45 PM (#688). Weekend: 6.20 AM (#690), 7.50 AM (#692), 11.40 AM (#694) and 6.25 PM (#698).

Trolley cars of the Portland and Yarmouth Electric Railway Company used to run, every fifteen minutes, from Portland, through Falmouth Foreside, up and down Pleasant Streetand onto Main Street between 1898 and 1933, when the advent of the automobile made rail travel a less convenient option. Underwood Spring Park in Falmouth Foreside, with its open-air theater, casino and gazebo, was a popular gathering spot serviced by the trolley cars. The theater only existed for eight years, burning down in 1907. In 1906, a bridge was built over the Royal River, connecting the Brunswick and Portland trolleys at the Grand Trunk depot in town. The tracks ran down what is today’s walkers’ path to the Rowe School. The pedestrian bridge in the Royal River Park is built on old abutments for a trolley line which ran between Yarmouth and Freeport between 1906 and 1933.

Bus

The only bus route that services the town is Greater Portland Metro’s BREEZ. It has eleven southbound services to Portland and twelve northbound services to Brunswick on weekdays and an abbreviated Saturday schedule. There is no service on Sundays.

This 6-month pilot program combined a multi-modal trip-planning mobile app and a fully-subsidized ridesharing service, providing a solution to the first and last mile challenge of getting to or from transit. This pilot program tested an entirely new platform for seamless door-to-door transit planning that streamlined information across multiple transportation modes. Go Denver, the app used to book Go Centennial trips, is the first multi-modal app of its kind to feature in-app booking with Lyft. The Centennial Innovation Team (i-Team), funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, developed the Go Centennial pilot concept and led development of the implementation plan by securing private-public partnerships with Xerox, Lyft, Via Mobility and the Denver South Transportation Management Association. Go Centennial was also the first public-private partnership in the nation to fully subsidize Lyft Line rides for transit commuters, and offer multiple ways to book and pay. Moore will act as Director of Engineering at UberElevate, which is what the ride-hailing company calls its exploration of airborne on-demand drives. Hiring Moore on came after the NASA veteran consulted on Uber's recent white paper on VTOL craft, according to Bloomberg. The engineer was impressed by Uber's work on the subject, and saw a chance to make the vision he'd originally articulated years ago into something real, in a reasonable time scale. Moore said that key to his decision to join Uber was that the company seemed to have a practical business case for making a flying commuter transit service real - and nothing would ever get done without market motivation behind the vision. Uber has articulated its vision for "on-demand aviation" as networks of small vehicles that can take off and land vertically, are powered by electric sources, and have ranges of between 50 and 100 miles on a single charge. The ultimate goal is to have these operate autonomously, summoned via an app on a passenger's phone, but in the near-term Moore tells Bloomberg that we'll probably see a bunch of competing designs hit the field that operate well but with human pilots for now. VTOL are a pursuit of other companies, too, including two startup funded by Google's Larry Page, and commercial aviation giant Airbus, which is exploring similar territory to Uber with its own Vahana project. While the state law classifies a puffer car as a Class B traffic misdemeanor for the person who left the vehicle “to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition and effectively setting the brake thereon” (CDOT), local law enforcement varies in how it carries out the law. The changes are a result of multiple complaints about commercial vehicles parking on private residential property and on public streets overnight, including an instance where a commercial business was operating entirely within the public right-of-way with no other physical presence within Centennial. New regulations include: • Restricting commercial vehicle parking on public streets from 9pm until 4am in non-residential neighborhoods but providing an exception up to a 24 hours if the vehicle is temporarily disabled. Overnight parking of a commercial vehicle on a residential street remains prohibited between 7pm and 7am • Prohibiting the loading or unloading of car carrier trailers on public streets in Centennial with the exception of local or collector roadways within an area bounded by Dayton St on the west, Revere Pky on the east, Costilla Ave & Briarwood Ave on the south, and Peakview Ave & Racine Cir on the north. This is intended to limit the loading and unloading of car carrier trailers to a small geographic area in close proximity to the existing auto dealerships within the City. • Continuing the City's parking prohibition of certain commercial vehicles in residential neighborhoods, generally those vehicles that weigh over 10,000 lbs. and tow trucks, except when parked in a fully enclosed structure, or a garage. Please note: In most cases, work vehicles that are driven home from a place of employment to a residence are not subject to the new regulations. It is not Council's intent to regulate those types of vehicles, nor was it their intent to go after home-based businesses who use their personal vehicle for business purposes, such as a Mary Kay distributor. ******************************************** Arapahoe County 4-H still accepting new members for program year There is still time to join Arapahoe County 4-H and participate in the 2017 Arapahoe County Fair. Youth ages 5 to 18 are invited to enroll by April 1 to enter a project like cooking, photography, cats or dogs into the County Fair July 27-30. The program offers more than 60 general, home economics and animal project areas for youth ages 5 to 18. A project involves learning a new skill over several weeks or months through hands-on learning. Some of the County’s most popular projects are shooting sports, cake decorating, clothing construction, rabbits and dogs. Llamas and alpacas are a new animal project this year. Small animals including poultry can be raised in most cities and give 4-H youth who live in urban settings the opportunity to learn about raising animals. Cats are another new animal project and the cat project caps off with a Cat Show at the County Fairgrounds July 22. 4-H also offers numerous STEM projects, such as robotics and rocketry. Children under the age of 8 participate in the Cloverbud project, where they learn about a variety of topics and have fun in a noncompetitive setting. Arapahoe County 4-H members are invited to show their completed projects at the Arapahoe County Fair each July and top exhibitors have the opportunity to show at the Colorado State Fair. The County also hosts optional contests throughout the year, such as cake decorating, speech demonstrations, creative cooks and a talent show. 4-H youth also participate in community service projects, fundraisers, conferences and camps that help to grow their leadership skills. Currently sitting 1:1 with a sleeping patient until 3am, which typically isnt my fav thing to do but IS a convenient way to force myself to update my blog & process life in general.

I returned from a trip to Colorado four days ago exhausted, sunburnt, sore from rock climbing, & extremely happy. After 2 days of being back at work on my psych unit, I'm feeling restless and ready for change.

I am so grateful to my friend Lindsey for letting me visit her for 6 days, & for driving to & from Denver to pick me up & drop me off af the airport. It's been so long since I've traveled that I kind of forgot how horizon-enhancing it can be to inhabit a completely different landscape, both physically & culturally.

My understanding of travel is definitely more nuanced than it used to be, though. After hiking St. Mary's Glacier in Arapahoe County, Colorado, I googled 'Arapahoe' to learn a little about the history of the land. Only 200 years ago, people indigenous to the US were being massacred in this region so that white settlers could claim the resource-rich land as their own. (And rename the mountains things like 'St. Mary's Glacier,' the whitest, most Catholic-sounding name.) And now, as a by-product of that settler-colonialist violence, I'm able to daydream about moving to Colorado Springs for my own fulfillment.

Colorado Springs is half inhabited by hippy-dippy queer, majority white people, who compost and shop at zero-waste stores and hike and rock-climb. And the other half of the population there works for the US government's military, doing god knows what, developing what weapons. The land itself is insanely gorgeous, & I can't help but want to move there for a while-- but it lays bare the contradictions of American society with alarming bluntness. Although perhaps every region in America can't help but reveal these contradictions, integral as they are to this country's way of life.

My trip was amazing, & my brain was producing serotonin in the sunshine & the mountains in a way it hasn't in a very long time. It was wonderful seeing Lindsey again, & meeting her open-minded, queer, sustainably-focused friends who all seemed like they were still trying to feel out what it means to live a life, in stark contrast to my peers in Zanesville, seemingly hell-bent on marrying young & producing children as soon as possible. I would love to surround myself with the smell of mountain pine, & sunshine, & a different set of expectations for what a successful life is. But it's so difficult to plan some type of ethical life in such a fucked up country. I don't know how to balance self-fulfillment & happiness with some type of useful purpose, & sometimes I just feel lost. Or forgotten about, tucked away as I am in little Zanesville, where I've lived so many years of my little life. Forgotten about by whom, though, exactly? Maybe myself?

But these concerns feel self-absorbed and narcissistic. I do want to learn more about the history & the on-going reality of settler-colonialism perpetuated by this government. And I want to do something concretely helpful in this world. And sometimes it's frustrating, having been alive for 24 years & still learning, constantly, how fucking difficult it is to do something concretely good in a society that is so hyper-focused on profit instead of human beings or nature. (And human beings are nature, aren't we?)

In sum ~ I miss lindsey and I wanna move to colorado but everything is complicated. But my trip was extremely good. I was hungover af on the plane ride back, which was awful. And now I'm at work, & I do not like it. But I never could have afforded a plane ticket or $30 Colorado bar tabs w out this job, so I suppose it's a necessary evil. I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL I FEEL LIKE I HAVE SOME SENSE OF AN IDEA OF WHAT IM DOING W MY LIFE :)
