Florida’s Boston House

The Boston House located in Fort Pierce, Florida is not the stereotypical haunted house. It is an elegant 3-story red-brick mansion that was built in 1909. With 5 bedrooms and 4,300 square feet it was considered a palatial mansion and architectural marvel when it was first built.

William T. Jones an engineer for the Florida East Coast railroad was seriously injured in a dynamite explosion that was placed on the track by a careless workman. He received $6,000 in a settlement. He used this money to have his new home which he originally called Cresthaven built on a high ridge overlooking the Indian River.

Jones and his wife had 5 children. He retired from the railroad and grew pineapples and sold real estate. Later he became the third sheriff of St. Lucie County. During the time the family lived at Cresthaven they experienced several tragedies.

His youngest son aged 9 accidentally shot and killed a playmate with his father’s gun. Another son was killed in a motorcycle accident. His daughter died of a heart attack.

Yet another son at the age of 17 while riding on a motorcycle collided with a friends’ motorcycle when they were out riding with their girlfriends. He and two others were seriously injured. His friend’s girlfriend was killed. He broke up with his girlfriend and later committed suicide.

During the Great Depression Jones experienced some drastic financial troubles. He borrowed money from a friend, Irving C. Whitney. But when Whitney died his sister Rose Whitney inherited his estate. She called in the note on the loan that her brother had given to Jones. In 1949 she gave the Jones family a week to vacate the property.

Rose a retired schoolteacher and spinster then moved into the home with her older sister Isabelle. It was at this point the home’s name was changed to Boston House–most likely because Rose had moved from Massachusetts to Florida.

In 1954 when Whitney died the home was put up for auction but it didn’t sell. From 1954 to 1975 the records are unclear so it is not known for sure who owned the property during these years.

In 1975, Boston House was sold to an engineering firm, Wood, Beard and Associates. This firm then sold the property to Leonard Cottern and his wife Dianne in 1976. This couple was rumored to hold séances in the home’s attic.

In 1983 Cottern sold the home to Kendall Phillips and his law partners. Phillips owned the Boston House for the next 25 years. Cottern mentioned to Phillips at the time of the purchase that the structure had paranormal activity. He told him the engineers that had worked there before he bought the house had to refused to work on the 3rd floor after 5:00 p.m.

So when odd things started to happen it didn’t surprise Phillips. During renovations for his law firm he noticed that paint and other materials that were put away at night would be found missing the next morning. Workers noted quick changes in temperature and heard noises that had no apparent cause.

One attorney that had a 2nd floor office that was accessible only by key asked Phillip one morning if someone had been in his office. Phillips told him no. The day before he had left a draft overlay open on a table but when he had entered his office that morning he found it rolled up and back in its carrying tube.

Another time when Phillips’ daughter was in the office she saw a word processor on a computer screen type random letters–this computer was turned off. Phillips at first dismissed this but as he and his daughter left the building a worker came running to tell him that the same thing happened to her.

One legal assistant that worked for the firm watched in horror as her computer keyboard lifted off her desk and an office plant bent over. Other workers heard books crashing down to the floor above them when no one was upstairs.

Over the years most of the activity has centered in the mansions upper floors–especially the 3rd floor–the attic, which Phillips had remodeled into five offices. The activity is most pronounced in the northeast corner office.

Phillips intrigued by all the unexplained activity invited two psychics to come to the firm one night. They told him there was “ a strong presence of a woman.” When they asked her to appear she refused.

Later that night as Phillips and eight others stood outside the firm on the sidewalk seven of them saw the silhouette of a woman standing at one of the attics gabled windows. They then saw her shadow as she moved from one window to the next.

Phillips on several occasions received phone calls from residents at night who told him as they had passed the mansion they saw lights on–more often than not on the 3rd floor. When he returned to work he never found any lights on.

A copy repairman that was called in to fix a machine was working on the 3rd floor when he saw an apparition of a woman dressed in a Victorian clothing vanish through one wall.

The present owner, a partner of Phillips, Steve Ziskinder has not experienced anything unusual but he states that others have smelled the aroma of strong coffee when none is around.

One lawyer reported that he left 10 stacks of neatly organized and sorted papers in his office one afternoon. The next morning when he returned he found these documents had been rearranged in a random order.

A friend who is in law enforcement visited the building 4 times in hopes of capturing evidence of this ghost. He recorded the distinct sounds of a woman’s laughter.

He and another visitor saw a door open and shut on its own. When one of them stood near this door and placed his hand on it he was surprised to feel it pulled away and shut. They also heard footsteps with no apparent source.

Kendall Phillips enjoyed his association with the Boston House –at one point he even had “Ghostbusters” T-shirts” made for the firm.

But he is most proud of the work his firm did in order to have the Boston House placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985–preserving the property for future generations.

A popular legend about the Boston House is about the ghost being a lady by the name of Aleaceon Perkins who lost her husband and young son when they went fishing and never returned. It is said she is the one that stands in the attic keeping a lookout for their return. But this legend does not fit in with the real history of the house.

Four Police Shot in Violent Protests After Trump Vows to Bring in US Military

Four St Louis police officers were hit by gunfire late on Monday during violent protests over the death of a black man in police custody, hours after President Donald Trump vowed to use the U.S. military to halt the spreading clashes.

Trump deepened outrage by posing at a church clutching a bible after law enforcement officers used teargas and rubber bullets to clear the way for him to walk there after he made his remarks in the White House Rose Garden.

Demonstrators set fire to a strip mall in Los Angeles, looted stores in New York City and clashed with police in St Louis, Missouri, where four officers were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Officers are still taking gunfire downtown & we will share more info as it available,” St Louis Police said on Twitter.

Trump has condemned the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American who died after a white policeman pinned his neck under a knee for nearly nine minutes in Minneapolis on May 25, and has promised justice. But he said rightful protests could not be drowned out by an “angry mob”.

“Mayors and governors must establish an overwhelming law enforcement presence until the violence has been quelled,” Trump said. “If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them.”

Following his address, Trump walked through an area that had been cleared by police to nearby St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he posed for pictures with his daughter, Ivanka, and U.S. Attorney General William Barr.

The presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church diocese in Washington D. C., Michael Curry, was among those who criticized Trump’s use of the historic church for a photo opportunity.

“In so doing, he used a church building and the Holy Bible for partisan political purposes,” he said on Twitter. The church suffered minor fire damage during protests on Monday night.

The White House said it was clearing the area before a curfew.

A few hours later, thousands of people marched through Brooklyn, shouting “Justice now!” while cars drove alongside, some drivers honking in support.

Television images showed crowds smashing windows and looting luxury stores along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan before the city’s 11 p.m. curfew. Mayor Bill de Blasio said the curfew would be moved to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Two police officers were struck by a car at a demonstration in Buffalo, New York, on Monday night. Officials said the driver and passengers were believed to be in custody. It was not immediately clear whether the incident was intentional.

FIRE IN HOLLYWOOD

In Hollywood, dozens of people were shown in television images looting a drug store. Windows were shattered at a nearby Starbucks and two restaurants.

Anti-police brutality marches and rallies have turned violent after dark each night over the last week.

A second autopsy ordered by Floyd’s family and released on Monday found his death was homicide by “mechanical asphyxiation,” or physical force that interfered with his oxygen supply. The report says three officers contributed to his death.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later released autopsy findings that also called Floyd’s death homicide by asphyxiation. The county report said Floyd suffered cardiopulmonary arrest while being restrained by police and that he had arteriosclerotic and hypertensive heart disease, fentanyl intoxication and recent methamphetamine use.

Derek Chauvin, the 44-year-old Minneapolis police officer who kneeled on Floyd, was arrested on third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges. Three other officers involved in the arrest have not been charged.

Floyd’s death was the latest case of police brutality against black men that was caught on videotape and prompted an outcry over racism in U.S. law enforcement.

It reignited simmering racial tensions in a politically divided country that has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, with African Americans accounting for a disproportionately high number of cases.

Dozens of cities are under curfews not seen since riots after the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The National Guard deployed in 23 states and Washington, D.C.

Most Americans were just emerging from weeks of strict “stay-at-home” orders imposed over the pandemic.

On Monday, dozens paid their respects to Floyd outside Cup Foods, the scene of his death, leaving flowers and signs. A little girl wrote, “I’ll fight with you,” in the road.

Terrence Floyd, the victim’s brother, told the gathering he wanted people to get educated and vote rather than resort to violence and destruction. “Let’s do this another way,” he said.

James Pool, a 31-year-old former Marine, said he hoped peaceful protests would make a difference.

“I want to see more community and this country come together and stop letting the powers that be divide us,” he said.

Lawsuit accuses Lehman Properties of posting “No felonies” rental ad

A new lawsuit accuses Lehman Properties of posting an ad for apartments in Broward County that said “No felonies.”

The lawsuit was filed last week in Fort Lauderdale district court by “fair housing tester” Delroy Chambers, who is represented by the Dunedin, Florida-based law firm Social Justice Law Collective.

According to the lawsuit, Chambers, who is black, was angered by the ad for the undisclosed property.

“As a black person who has been the subject of discrimination throughout his life, Mr. Chambers is particularly sensitive to discriminatory practices,” the lawsuit states. “Mr. Chambers was insulted and emotionally distressed by being denied housing based on the Defendant’s blanket prohibition.”

Joseph Lehman, owner of Miami-based Lehman Properties, said he was not aware of the ad and would not have approved it. He said the company hadn’t been officially served with the suit.

“I’m not aware of us not allowing people with any background issue. We do try to keep our company safe,” Lehman said, adding that some residents currently living at the company’s properties have felonies and criminal backgrounds.

“But we do have a standard protocol that if you have a vigorous record of homicide, murder or rape, we would typically deny that person,” Lehman said. “My first priority is to keep my staff safe and our best interest of our tenants.”

The suit says the ad made it clear that “rental of the home is subject to a blanket prohibition regarding an applicant’s felony criminal history, which is unlawful under the Fair Housing Act, as it has a disparate impact on Black people, and fails to serve a substantial, legitimate, nondiscriminatory interest.”

The suit said Chambers posed as a potential renter responding to the ad, but was told the apartment was no longer available and was directed to another unit. He asked an employee if having a felony would be an immediate bar to renting the property and was told yes, it would, according to the suit.

The suit seeks a permanent injunction against discrimination based on race, an unspecified money damage award and attorney’s costs and fees.

The Housing and Urban Development Administration issued guidance in 2016 saying landlords could be breaking the law if they refuse to rent to people with criminal records because such a policy would likely have a disproportionate impact on African-American and Hispanic applicants.

Lehman is the owner of several multifamily projects in Miami-Dade, including including a 112-unit property at 611 Northwest 177 Street.

Chambers has filed similar lawsuits in Central Florida. He filed another housing discrimination lawsuit in St. Lucie County in January against the Villages of Lake Lucie Homeowners’ Association, accusing it of running an ad that said: “If you have any felonies at all they will not approve your application so please don’t waste our time.” According to court records, that case was settled quickly.

I was struck by an uninsured driver on 02-10-11. Because the driver who struck me was uninsured I was forced to file a claim with my insurance company(Omni Insurance). The car was towed to CJ's collision at 6128 n beechwood Philadelphia, pa ,19138 on 02-11-11. Phone number 215-848-2836. On 02-14-11 Omni insurance sent out an appraiser to evaluate the vehicle. They then faxed an estimate on 02-15-11 totaling $5300 to CJ's collision shop. I went to the collision shop on 02-15-11 to sign paperwork giving them permission to work on my car. They then began the repairs. On 02-18-11 the insurance company then deemed my car a total loss. The vehicle is a 2005 Nissan Altima SL with 96,477 miles. The NADA value for the vehicle is 10,995. According to Omni insurance a car is deemed a total loss when the repairs reach 70% of the value of the vehicle. Omni insurance valued my car at 7,415. They then proposed a settlement offer of 5826.40. They deducted 975.00 in prior damages(which I disagree with) and 1000.00 my deductible. The settlement offer included 386.40 in sales tax. After negotiating on 02-28-11 they proposed an offer of 7835.30. The value they gave my car was 9255. Again 975.00 was deducted and my 1000.00 deductible. They including sales tax and tags/registration fee in the offer. I accepted the offer out of desperation because they also stopped paying for the rental car I was driving on 02-28-11. I work, attend school and have a child my schedule requires that I have a car so I paid out of pocket for a rental car until 03-07-11, expecting the payment to be issued to my lien holder by then so I could purchase another car. I contacted them on 03-07-11 inquiring about my payment and was informed they did not pick the vehicle up from the collision shop therefore they were not issuing a payment. The collision shop gave them a bill of 1750.00 for the repairs they did and the storage fees. The insurance company disagrees with this and refuses to pick the vehicle up and issue my payment. They have also stated this may come out of my settlement offer. The insurance company already has the title to the car and all the necessary paperwork to the vehicle but refuses to issue a payment. It has been a month since I filed my claim and I can no longer afford to pay for a rental especially since it seems I will have to purchase a new vehicle. The insurance company is low balling me and also forcing me to pay for repairs they approved then backed out of.""

For some reason, the insurance coverage I have seems to go up every year (and because I moved recently it jumped up another $60 a month). My wife and I get crappy coverage on top of it. A golf course near Hobe Sound partially owned by basketball legend Michael Jordan is dirtying the South Fork of the St. Lucie River, a state official said Friday.

Construction at the golf course being built on 226 acres east of Interstate 95 and north of Bridge Road is putting unacceptable levels of sediment in the upper reaches of the river, an aerial survey of the site revealed Friday afternoon, said Randy Smith, a spokesman for the South Florida Water Management District.

“They’re doing work in a canal on the property and it’s getting the water stirred up,” Smith said. “That water has made its way through a series of canals and into the South Fork.”

A district crew was on the site Friday afternoon to determine the extent of the damage.

“If warranted, we could issue some kind of enforcement against the contractor,” Smith said. “It could be anything from a notice of non-compliance saying to fix the problem immediately all the way to a notice of violation, which could include penalties and fines.”

Breaking state rules

Guettler Bros. Construction in Fort Pierce is the contractor on the project, said Nicki van Vonno, Martin County Growth Management Department director. Company officials did not return a phone call Friday afternoon.

District staffers first visited the site Jan. 25 and “did observe turbidity in the water,” Smith said, but not enough to find the construction in violation of pollution laws.

“Our people met with the contractor and made some suggestions about how to better control runoff from the site into the river,” Smith said.

The suggestions included sodding canal banks, plugging some canals and moving barriers designed to hold back dirty water. During a second, midweek visit, staffers saw some barriers had been moved.

However, an aerial survey Friday morning “confirmed” sediment from the construction site was getting into the river at levels that weren’t in compliance with regulations.

“It’s not a Level 1 catastrophe,” Smith said.

Not Lake O discharges

Muddy water from the construction site was first noticed by kayakers in the upper South Fork in late November, said Ed Stout, owner of South River Outfitters, a kayak shop adjacent to Halpatiokee Regional Park.

It wasn’t dirty water from the Lake Okeechobee discharges, Stout said, because it was coming from upstream. Lake water enters the South Fork downstream of Stout’s shop.

“Besides, it kept coming after the discharges stopped,” he said.

The water is “chocolate-milk brown,” Stout said. “You can’t see the bottom. The fish moved away, and then the birds moved away.”

The dirty water extends “at least three or four miles,” Stout said. “It’s a lot more opaque the farther upstream you go.”

Principal owner

TCPalm in October 2016 reported Jordan would be principal owner of the 18-hole golf course to be developed by The Grove Golf Club, a West Palm Beach company.

The private club will include a driving range, 9,800-square foot clubhouse and maintenance facilities, according to the developer’s application filed with Martin County.

The property is bordered by agricultural land to the east, south and west and by Atlantic Ridge State Park to the north, according to the application. The property also is bordered by multiple wetlands, according to the developer.

The Martin County Commission approved a major final site plan for the project in November and the contractor held a pre-construction meeting with the county Dec. 20.

On December 14, 2012, the Sandy Hook community in Newtown, Connecticut experienced a calamity that shook the world. Twenty children between the ages of six and seven as well as six staff members were fatally shot while attending school. The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was committed by a boy Adam Lanza who was documented as having the developmental disorder Asperger’s syndrome, and as a teenager suffered from depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. His disorders were a recipe for mass murder.

On December 15, 2012 Moms Demand Action for Better Gun Sense in America was established. Stay-at-home mom Shannon Watts organized by starting a Facebook page. The organization number of members grew at a fiery speed. Women and men as well knew that together we can make a change at the local, state and national levels for gun violence prevention as the focus. Over the past five years Moms Demand Action gained unstoppable momentum to become the strongest opposition that the gun lobby has ever seen. We believe in the rights to bare arms. We have an issue with gun laws that are in place. We also have an issue with the statistics that are ignored when it comes to gun violence.

The Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting was the fourth deadliest mass shooting by a single person. Conversations as to why he had access to semi-automatic firearms and magazines sparked across the United States. Lanza was documented as having the developmental disorder Asperger’s syndrome, and as a teenager suffered from depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder with access to fire-arms used in combat. We then realized that the laws across the United States varied as to how you qualify to obtain a gun. Moms Demand Action also sparked the conversations about play dates with children. The safety conversations we do not have. Parents often have children visit their home and their child may also visit their friend. “Do you have a fire-arm?” is a question many parents never thought of asking.

“Every 36 hours, a child unintentionally fires a gun and kills or injures himself or someone else. And that doesn’t include the number of suicides–and even some homicides–that occur when kids have access to unsecured guns. The Be SMART campaign asks parents and all responsible adults to prevent these tragedies by following five simple steps: Secure guns in homes and vehicles; Model responsible behavior around guns; Ask about the presence of guns in other homes; Recognize the risks of teen suicide; and Tell your peers to Be SMART. Westchester County Moms Demand Action Chapter met at the Yonkers Library located at One Larkin Center to celebrate five years of making a change. Since its founding in 2012, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America continues to push back in opposition of the gun lobby and educating the masses to rally for common-sense laws and policies to make our country sound. Thanks to Westchester County Executive George Latimer who supports common-sense gun laws. He signed an executive order Tuesday, January 2, 2018 that bans gun shows on all Westchester county-owned properties. The act was one of Latimer’s first move as executive. He believed that the Westchester County Center was the wrong venue for a gun show.

The Biography of George Edward Burgess

In 1862, George Martin Burgess, along with his brothers and grandfather William Burgess Sr., was called by Brigham Young to settle in St. George. A year later, they were called to move to Pine Valley, Utah Territory, to start a lumber mill. This mill provided “lumber for the construction of the St. George Temple and also furnished lumber to be used in building homes for the early settlers of Pine Valley and surrounding areas.”1

Upon arrival in Pine Valley, George immediately started purchasing property. In 1864 he married Rhoda Ann Dykes. “ He built a large home for Rhoda on a ranch in Grass Valley, five miles west of the town of Pine Valley.”2 George and Rhoda remained in the area for over three decades. “Their first son, George Edward, was born May 7, 1865 in Pine Valley and was the ‘apple of his mother’s eye.’ Rhoda dearly loved children, not only her firstborn, but each of the 10 children who later came into the family.”3

Being the oldest child, much of George’s childhood was spent welcoming new siblings into his home. The first of these siblings was Lillie, who was born when George was eighteen months old. The following summer, George and Rhoda traveled to Salt Lake City and were sealed to each other in the Endowment House on June 20, 1867. Sealings to parents did not commence in Utah until 1877 in the St. George temple.4 Thus, George and Lillie were not sealed to them at this time. Sadly, Lillie passed away on January 29, 1869 and was laid to rest in the Pine Valley Cemetery.5

George’s parents saw to it that George was baptized and confirmed only 4 days after his eighth birthday, on May 11, 1865.

By the time George turned 12, he had five living siblings; Mary Alice, Howard, Ella May, Willard, and Horace Martin. Horace Martin only lived a year, passing away on April 14, 1879. Seven months later, another sister, Lucy Jane Burgess was born.

In 1879, George’s parents “acquired a large home in the town (Pine Valley) close to the Chapel-schoolhouse. Thereafter the family lived on the ranch in summers and in town during the winter months.”6 During those summer months George “learned farm work as well as helping out with logging at the sawmill in the nearby mountains.”7

Two more siblings, Ruth Fowler and Ernest Hungate were born during George’s teenage years. Ernest was almost two years old, when twenty-year-old George entered the St. George temple for the first time. He took out his endowments and married his sweetheart, Emily Ann Jeffery on December 3, 1885. Emily, the daughter of Thomas Alfred Jeffery and Elizabeth Cowper, had previously taken out her endowments as a young teenager on April 18, 1879.

George’s youngest sibling, Clarence, was born two months after his wedding. When George was 21, he traveled with his parents to St. George. He and Lillie (deceased) were finally sealed to their parents in the St. George temple on January 20, 1887.

Twenty-two-year-old George became a father on December 18, 1887. He named his daughter Lillie Jeffery – Lillie, most likely after his deceased sister, and Jeffery, after his wife Emily’s maiden name. Shortly after Lillie’s birth, George received a mission call to the Southern States.

“Six weeks after her birth, George E. left for a two-year mission to the Southern states, arriving in Chattanooga, Tennessee 20 February 1888. He was assigned to labor in South Carolina… He gained a knowledge of the gospel which he implemented into his everyday living. He had a strong testimony of the Book of Mormon and was an avid student of the Scriptures.”8

George was received warmly by many of the South Carolina inhabitants. However, he was mobbed twice, once in Lawrence County and once in Chesterfield County. He and his companion received threatening letters stating that if the elders appeared there again their bodies would be “riddled with bullets.”9 Despite the threats, he was watched over by the Lord and no harm came to him.

“He received an honorable mission release and after two years, arrived back in Salt Lake City on 22 March 1890. He went by train to Juab where his wife and daughter met him, then on to Milford Station. Here he was met by his brother Howard with a team of horse and wagon. They loaded up and proceeded through the snowcapped mountains back to Pine Valley. After returning from his mission, he continued to earn a living by farming, raising livestock and doing some freighting in the fall months. He was a very religious, industrious man and set a good example for his family to follow.”10

Over the next eight years, George and Emily had 4 more children: Edward W (1891), Herbert Alfred (1893), Aggie(1894) and Dora (1898.) “George E. held many church positions during this time including Sunday School superintendent. He was a Ward Teacher most of his life after returning from his mission.”11

George Edward Burgess moved up to a new colony in White Pine County, Nevada, called Lund. Perhaps he was drawn to this land because the church owned it and was selling it at a very low price. George’s daughter, Dora, explained that the move was “because of the drought in Utah and because they wanted more room for grazing and farming. The move took about three weeks time with their two wagons and furniture and meeting needs of their cattle. They arrived on 5 November 1899.”12. George’s married sister, Mary Alice Gardner, had arrived 5 months earlier, in June 1899. His parents and several other siblings followed in 1900.

George was set apart as a counselor to Bishop Thomas Judd of the White Pine Ward on 8 July 1900. His brother-in-law, Orrin Snow, served as the ward clerk. In 1901, the ward was divided into three wards, and George later served as first counselor in the MIA in the newly-formed Lund Ward.

Moving from Pine Valley to Nevada was a sacrifice. Pine Valley was green with large shade trees and orchards. Lund was dry and virtually treeless. The move was a big transition for the family. Daughter Lillie, who was 11 at the time of the move, wrote of the experience.

“We lived in Pine Valley until the fall of 1899 when my father bought a small farm in Lund, Nevada and moved his family there. We were about 20 days traveling from Pine Valley to Lund, arriving there

Nov. 5, 1899. I cannot describe the shock I received when we arrived at our destination. Pine Valley was a beautiful little town in the mountains with large shade trees on every street and in most yards, apple orchards and other fruit trees were growing. I just didn't understand that people lived in those big open valleys where the wind blew dirt and sand most of the time. There were no trees except a dozen at the south end of town where a spring came up out of a hole in the ground. I had the idea that water always came out of the side of a mountain, cool and fresh instead of so warm that in the winter one could see where the ditch was by the steam arising from the water.

The homes were built from any material available. There were only about two dozen at the time we arrived. Some were built of old lumber that was purchased at Hamilton and others were made of logs and there was one sod home.

The first winter we rented three rooms of a four room frame home from Moses Harrison. The other room was the school. The first year there, we had six weeks of school, the next year we had three months and after that we had six months each year.

In the spring of 1900, my father, who wanted a brick home hired Horsley to make some brick, but there was too much lime in the soil to make a good grade of brick. However, he had a small building 18 ft. by 20 ft. made of these brick and we lived in this for one year. We had curtains to draw at night to make two small bedrooms where my parents, my two sisters Aggie and Dora, and myself had our beds. My two brothers Edward and Herbert slept in a wagon box set on the ground by the side of the house. It had a heavy wagon cover over the bows and the inside was lined with heavy wool blankets. The mattress, made of fresh straw, covered with a heavy quilt and blankets made a warm bed. In the winter they would heat bricks in the oven and take to bed with them. (A good substitute for an electric blanket). “13

George’s family lived in the large brick room for over a year. Lillie wrote, “This home was sold and Father bought a two room rock home from B. H. Ashby. It had a dirt roof. My father immediately built two log rooms on the back of this. We lived in this home until I was married. I think our experiences and living conditions were very much like the Pioneers had when they first came to Utah.”14

Granddaughter Ula wrote about George’s life in Lund. “Many of the hardships of pioneer life were experienced again. In Lund, the nearest store, such as it was, was 40 miles away. Money was very scarce in those days and the doctor was something they knew nothing about. But the Lord blessed these good people. At one time they went seven years without a death in their community of over 300 people”15

George kept busy with farming, hauling logs and delivering the mail. Daughter Aggie wrote, “George E. assisted in getting logs to build the school house and church. Rock and logs were the only building materials available. It was a long way to a railroad, and for many years freight was hauled from Modena, Utah with team and wagon which took more than a week for the roundtrip.

George E. got the contract of taking the mail twice a week from Lund to the ranches 33 miles south to Sunnyside. Some winters the snow was drifted so deep he had to make the trip on horseback carrying the mail sack on his horse. To keep warm he would get off the horse often and trot along beside it. He never missed a trip.

One election year a White Pine County candidate sent some liquor to George E. to treat the Lund men to try and win their votes. When the election was over George E. returned the liquor unopened telling him he didn't drink and didn't believe in giving it to others.”16

“Aggie also recalled her father taking the family up Sawmill Canyon for several years in the fall and camping for a day or two. They always enjoyed their outings as a family. They would gather sacks of pine nuts in burrs and lots of pine gum. She doesn't remember ever having “store gum” in those days. There would always be several families camping out together. They had such fun and were so sticky from the pine gum! Afterwards they would spend several days and evenings roasting the burrs after bringing home the pine nuts.

If George E.'s water turn came on a Sunday at his farm, he always arranged it so he didn't have to miss either church meeting. In the summer after their 2 p.m. Sacrament meeting, the family would come home and change clothes, their mother, Emily Ann, would prepare an evening meal and then she and the children would get in the wagon with the food and go to the field to their father. He would change the water while Emily Ann spread a quilt on the ground, on a grassy bank under some willows. How wonderful those plain suppers tasted out there in the fields.17

George and Emily had three sons born to them while living in Lund. Orion J (1903), Rulon L (1904), and Malin H (1907). Sadly, Rulon passed away shortly after his first birthday.

The year 1907 was a happy one for the Burgess family. George’s last and eighth child, Malin, was born on 25 August 1907. Lillie, George’s oldest child, married Heber Arthur Smith (Arthur). Arthur had been hired to run the farm for George. They were sealed in the St. George temple on 27 November 1907. Lillie and Arthur returned to Lund and made their home there.

The next year was full of challenges and changes. Baby Malin passed away on 29 January 1908. George’s sister, Ella, became seriously ill and passed away just 4 months later. Ella left her husband, Orrin, and 7 children. Her youngest, Anne, was just 5 weeks old. George and Ella’s parents and relatives lived close by, and one can only imagine the help that was extended to both grieving families that year.

“George E.'s strong testimony of the Gospel kept him active in the church, honest in his dealings with others, and he always observed the Sabbath Day. After attending a General Conference, he decided they needed a better area to raise their children. In September 1908, once again George E. and Emily Ann loaded all their belongings into two wagons and with their five children (Lillie having married remained in Lund) moved to Alpine, Utah.”18

George and Emily made their home in Alpine. “George E felt this was a wonderful place to raise his children. They purchased the Robert Jones' home and farm located at 677 South Alpine Hwy and lived there are a number of years. They moved to the old Joe Beck home down by Dry Creek, to Bishop Fullmer's home that what is now West Center and Main. George E purchased his father's home, one that George Martin had built in 1915 when he left Lund to move to Alpine, located at 17 North Main, across from the Alpine City Hall today. Here they remained until their deaths. While living in Alpine, George E. was active not only in church but in the Alpine City community. He served two terms on the City Council, from 1914-1915 and from 1928-1929. He also served two years as Alpine's Justice of the Peace.”19

Other Burgess relatives moved down to Alpine, including George’s parents in 1915. Two years later, a series of tragedies struck George’s son, Herbert Alfred, and his family. Their daughter, Laura Emily, who was born prematurely, died of cholera infantum in September of 1917 at 15 months of age. A son, Myron Herbert Burgess, was born three months later in December of 1917. Less than a year later, due to a flu epidemic, both Herbert and his wife Della Whitby passed away. They died a day apart; Herbert on 28 November 1918 and Della on 29 November 1918. Herbert’s son, eleven-month old Myron, was the sole survivor of his family.

Myron later wrote of his predicament. “Aunt Clara Stevens (mother’s sister) offered to take me and raise me, but it was decided by my grandparents, George Edward and Emily Jeffery Burgess, to raise me themselves. As this was the result, I moved to Alpine, Utah Co., Utah.”20

One of Myron’s earliest memories was visiting his grandmother, Emily, in the American Fork Hospital. She had been diagnosed with stomach cancer and passed away on May 21, 1924. Thus, George became a widower at the age of 59. His youngest son, Orion, was 21 and unmarried at the time. Grandson Myron was only 6 years old. Myron was passed along from one relative to another, but remembered that most of the time he lived with his “Grandfather Burgess.”21

Granddaughter, Ula Burgess Hemingway fondly described George. “Grandpa George E., as I always called him, was an average sized man with light complexion and large full blue eyes that twinkled. He loved to tell stories and the bigger the tale, the better. He learned the blacksmith trade from his father. I can remember as a small child going next door north to his blacksmith shop, located in Alpine, Utah, where West Center Street is now, and pumping the billows to make our goals for him to fix or horse shoes and repair machine equipment. George E. was a good farmer and cattle horse raiser and very outstanding at horse breaking.”22

After his wife's death in 1924, George E. went on another mission to Watsonville, California. His testimony and knowledge of the gospel grew even more.

Granddaughter Ula recalled, “He was well versed in the Scriptures. How I loved to go over to his home and help him hold up maps on his big south window as he would trace where the Nephites and Lamanites traveled and discussed the Gospel. Afterwards we would have hot homemade biscuits and dark karo syrup or molasses. Sometimes I had corn on the cob he had toasted in his coal stove oven. It was so good and chewy.”23

George chose not to remarry, but remained a widower for the next 15 years. As his health declined, his son Orion moved his family into George’s home so that they could care for him. After George’s death, Orion and his family remained in the home until 1947.24

“George Edward Burgess was valiant in the faith all his days and passed this great heritage on to his descendents. He departed from this life in his home in Alpine on 29 June 1939.”25 George died at age 74 of broncho pneumonia with chronic fibrosis as an attributing factor.26 He was buried on July 2, 1939 “next to his eternal partner in the Alpine City Cemetery.”27

Although he was the oldest child in his family, he was survived by only 3 of his 10 siblings; Mary Alice (Gardner), Willard Burgess, and Ruth Fowler (Gardner). He was survived by 5 of his 8 children; Lillie Jeffery (Smith) Edward W Burgess, Aggie (Gubler), Dora (Shepherd) and Orion J Burgess, and by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
