UP 4014 Big Boy por Tim and Renda Por Flickr: Louisiana Trip August 19-23, 2021 The Great 4014 Train Chase Keeping his eyes on the rails, Ed Dickens, senior manager of the Union Pacific Heritage Operations hangs out the locomotive's window while maintaining control of the 604 ton iron horse, UP Big Boy 4014. The 4014 is one of 25 Big Boy class locomotives built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1941 to 1948. The simple articulated 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive has the longest engine body of any reciprocating steam locomotive at 132 feet long, It was the second-heaviest steam locomotive ever built, weighing in with a total weight (Locomotive Tender combined) at 599 tons. The Big Boy locomotives were built to haul freight over the Wasatch mountains between Ogden, Utah and Green River, Wyoming. In the late 1940s, they were reassigned to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where they hauled freight over Sherman Hill to Laramie, Wyoming. With the shift to diesel-electric power by most railroads, the reign of the Big Boy was coming to an end. The last revenue train hauled by a Big Boy ended its run early in the morning on July 21, 1959. Most were placed in storage and only four remained in operational condition at Green River, Wyoming until 1962. Only 8 Big Boys survived and placed in museums throughout the United States. ALCO built the 4014 in November 1941 and delivered to Union Pacific the following month. The 4014 traveled 1,031,205 miles during its twenty years of revenue service. No. 4014 completed its final revenue run on July 21, 1959, just hours before the last revenue run by any Big Boy. Union Pacific retired 4014 on December 7, 1961 and soon afterwards the railroad donated the locomotive to the Southern California chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, California. In 2012, Union Pacific officials announced that they would obtain a Big Boy locomotive, restore it to operating condition, and use it in excursion service. The 4014 was chosen and Southern California chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society agreed to transfer ownership of No. 4014 back to Union Pacific on July 23, 2013. On November 14, 2013 the 4014 was pulled from the museum's grounds to began the long journey to UP's steam shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming, arriving on May 8, 2014. On May 1, 2019, the 4014 moved under it's own power for the first time in more than 59 years. On January 22nd 1732, Rachel Chiesley, Lady Grange was taken from her Edinburgh lodgings, ending up being "imprisoned" on the remote Scottish archipelago of St Kilda.
This is quite an extraordinary tale, of a privileged strong woman being spirited away from her home in Niddry Street in the Old Town, Cassells Old and New has a wee bit about it stating she was "seized her with violence, knocking out some of her teeth, and, tying a cloth over her head, bore her forth, as if she had been a corpse."
The bit about the corpse relates to the fact that later a funeral, attended by her children, was faked by her husband with Lady Grange dispatched first to Polmaise and eventually on to the Western Isles, where she lived in a primitive stone cleit, a stone storage hut or bothy, uniquely found on the remote isles. A bit of background on the Lady herself, she was born the child of John Chiesley of Dalry (Edinburgh, not Ayrshire) who was convicted of murder and publicly hanged for his crime in the city when she was just ten years old.
Raised as one of many children, Rachel Chiesley met her future husband James Erskine – just six months her junior – in the early 1700s, marrying him in 1707 as the Act of Union formally bound Scotland and England, becoming Lord and Lady Grange. I covered Lord Erskine on the anniversary of his death in a post Here
The marriage was not a happy one, the term “unlikely bedfellows" has been used, and that she allegedly keeping a razor blade under her pillow to remind him of her volatile nature and that she was the daughter of a murderer; he was apparently forced to marry her at the point of a gun owing to a pregnancy out of wedlock, your actual shotgun wedding!
The household was a hotbed of intrigue, Erskine may have been at the beck and call of the Westminster Government, but his brother was a more complex creature who became known as "Bobbin John" a man of contraries, he voted for the Union of the countries, but The Earl of Mar, to call him by his title, by 1715, was at the head of the Jacobite Uprising of that year.
Lord Grange was in favour of the Jacobite rebellion, but kept it quiet in public circles due to his esteemed public position. As his marriage descended into trouble due in no small part to his infidelity, he became convinced that Lady Grange would expose his traitorous views.
As manager of his affairs, Lady Grange was regularly privy to secrets relating to her husband’s affairs, including the reality that Preston House was being used as a meeting place for those interested in Jacobitism.
Although her husband frequently wrote her flattering letters from London, as her frustration grew over his infidelity and political activity, suspicion mounted she would try to put a stop to one by blowing the whistle on the other.
Lord Grange roped in colleagues to deal with his wife, enraging her further by making sure the lock to his study was changed to prevent her gaining access to his papers – and she wasn’t the sort of woman to give in quietly.
In a daring and elaborate plan, Lord Grange and his co-conspirators planned a ruthless attack, kidnapping Lady Grange from her home in the middle of the night and whisking her away to North Uist.
Here she stayed for a few days before making the journey to Hirta in St Kilda - over 40 miles away from the Western Isles.
She would never see him or her children again, with friends and neighbours left mystified by her disappearance.
Lady Grange was firstly taken to the island of Heskeir, then to St Kilda and later to Skye where she would eventually die in 1745 – although her husband had previously held a “funeral” at the city’s Greyfriars Kirk for her many years before. On the islands she lived in virtual solitude, except for the company of at least one of her husband’s colleagues, instructed to watch her at all times, and a Gaelic-speaking maid from whom she learned to speak the language of the islands.
Despite the bafflement caused by island life and the Gaelic language, Lady Grange lived amongst the fishermen and local tradespeople of the island. She spent nearly ten years in exile before dying in Skye in 1745 - and all the while still married to her husband of 25 years.
Despite her being "dead" there are letters held by Edinburgh University, describes in brutal detail how she was beaten and seized from her home by a group of men including Roderick McLeod, writer to the signet and several servants of another leading Jacobite. Lord Lovat, aye The Old Fox himself!
One letter, written on January 20th 1738 and marked St Kilda, said: “They threw me down upon the floor in a barbarous manner. I cried murther, murther (murder), they stopped my mouth. I pulled out the cloth and told Rod McLeod I knew him.”
Lady Grange claimed in the letter that her hair and her teeth were “torn out” by the mob.
She lived in isolation for two years on the Monach Isles before being moved in June 1734 to St Kilda. Here she lived in a tiny stone cleit, now recorded as Cleit 85, on Hirta. Lady Grange, in a further letter, described Hirta as a “vile, neasty (sic), stinking poor isle" where she was unable to communicate, given she did not know Gaelic.
Later, she she was moved to Skye in 1742 where she died four years later, aged 64.
She was “decently interred” shortly after her death at a churchyard at Waternish but for some unknown reason, a second funeral was held at Duirnish some time thereafter, where a crowd gathered the watch a coffin filled with turf and stones put to rest in the ground.
Nobody knows why three funerals for Lady Grange were found to be necessary. The story of Lady Grange is a complex tale and if you want to find out more their is a full book about it The Unreliable Death of Lady Grange is available on Amazon, only £2.89 on kindle or £7.13 in paperback, it has many great reviews and 4 and half stars over 37 reviews, one stating it is "A must for Outlander fans"

How to Sell Your House in Any Market - Make Your Home Irresistible to Buyers
"How can I sell my house for the most money in the least time" is an even more important question in a buyer's market. 'Dressing' your house is the answer, and it's something anybody can do. It's sometimes called 'staging' or 'fluffing', but 'dressing' is a more appropriate term. These techniques have been used by professionals for many years but information has been surprisingly hard to come by for the layman. Here you'll learn the secrets and why they work.
Many buyers think they'll be able to look past a poorly decorated or empty house, but they do have a negative psychological effect on most people. Have you ever noticed that successful home builders always use a professionally decorated Model Home or Sales Suite? Buyers want to fall in love with their new home, and it's very hard to do that if it's cluttered, in disrepair, out of style, or empty.
Every realtor knows that the longer a house is on the market the lower the final selling price will be. 'Dressed' houses sell twice as fast as 'non-dressed' houses. A survey in California of 2,772 homes showed the average number of days on the market for non-dressed houses was 30.9, while dressed houses sold in 13.8 days.
Phenomenal Return On Investment
Some of these techniques involve spending a little money, and many people have a psychological block against spending money on something they won't get to enjoy. But when you look at the Return On Investment (ROI) you'll realize this may be the best investment you'll ever make. Research shows that houses that have been 'dressed', sell for more money, and the higher selling price more than makes up for the investment.
Statistics from the National Association of Realtors show that the optimal amount to spend on 'dressing' your house is between 1 and 3% of the home's value, and it brings in an average Return On Investment of between 8 and 10% in increased selling price. So if your house is worth $300,000, then investing between $3,000 and $9,000 will return an average of $24,000 to $30,000 in increased selling price.
Even if you look at a less than average possible scenario - if you invest $3,000 and get a return of $24,000 in 5 weeks, you've received a net profit of 7 times your investment. That's a Return On Investment of more than 4,200% on an annual basis. It's difficult if not impossible for most people to find another investment with that rate of return.
The key to making your home irresistible is this: "Once you decide to sell, you have to understand that this is no longer your home. It has turned into a great opportunity to make thousands of dollars in extra cash. YOUR home is waiting for you somewhere else."
UNDERSTANDING THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HOME BUYERS
Dressing your house is about understanding and appealing to the psychology of home buyers. They want a home that's bigger, maintenance free, and a step up in class from the home they're living in now. And they need to be able to picture themselves living there.
Making your house look bigger There are a few simple techniques you can use to increase the perceived size of even smaller homes:
Leave an absolute minimum of furniture and wall hangings, perhaps half of what you have now, and put the rest in storage. You may think the rooms look empty but leave them for a few days and see if you get used to them. Although you may be proud of your furniture you'll be more proud of selling your house quickly for the right price. Make it completely free of small items and clutter such as magazine racks, small plants, stools, garbage containers, umbrella stands, shoe racks, CD racks, and throw rugs. Use large accessories such as cushions, table lamps and flower pots. Turn on all the lights, open all the curtains. Add a coat of off-white paint. If you need to, consult a professional with help on colors. Giving the impression of a maintenance-free home Upgrade electrical switches, plug-ins, lighting and plumbing fixtures to give the impression that your wiring and plumbing are up to date and will be maintenance free. Make your home spotlessly clean. People naturally feel that if the surfaces of a house are well maintained, things below the surface are in the same good condition. A clean house also feels more comfortable. Be sure to hide all your cleaning materials. Having them visible just reminds people about doing chores. Gaining a competitive edge with style and features Every house in your price range is your competition. The first step in gaining a competitive edge is research. You need to find out what style should your house be, what features should it have, and how much you should ask.
Style - When most people are buying a new home they want to take a step up in class. If your house is just as ordinary looking as their current one why should they buy it? They are looking for a home they can be proud of. To find out what current house decorating trends are, look through magazines like Better Homes and Gardens. Look particularly at what colors they use. Of course you want to stick to soft neutral colors in general but also look at the accent colors. Fancy cushions give the appearance of luxury. You can buy large pillows for your sofa in the latest colors. Put a slip cover on your old sofa if it is out of style.
Make sure none of the rooms in your house have been decorated in a particular theme. Themes appeal only to a very limited percentage of the population and in order to make your home sell it needs to appeal to the most possible buyers. Paint any rooms that need it with soft warm colors, not bright white. You want your house to feel comfortable, not stark or institutional.
Features - What are your house's advantages and disadvantages over other houses for sale in your area? Dressing your house is about highlighting the positives and minimizing the negatives. Compare your house to the standard for your price range and improve the points where it is below standard. Have a look at the age of people who are moving in and out of your neighborhood. Are they empty nesters looking for a smaller home that is easy to maintain, young couples with small children, or growing families looking for more living space? This will affect what features your house should have. For example, people with young children or empty nesters may want to use one of the bedrooms as an office or den.

Stumpf was born in Offenbach, Germany and emigrated to New York in 1869 at the age of 18. He quickly broke into the brewing trade, and by 1886 he had relocated to Richmond, where he made suds for the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association.
September 2019 — 1201 West Clay Street looking west
By 1892 he broke out on his own and moved his operation to West Clay Street, where he was successful enough that he developed franchises in Petersburg, Newport News, and Phoebus. He also owned or controlled a number of saloons here in Richmond which were "tied" bars, establishments that sold only the parent company’s product.
September 2019 — finial detail at 1201 West Clay Street
He retired from the business in 1897 at the unusually young age of 46, a year after marrying his wife, Hermine Morganstern. Perhaps it was for health reasons or maybe he was simply wealthy enough that he could afford not working. Either way, it didn’t last, and he died in 1903 at the age of 52. (Find A Grave)

Shuls on the move!
How strange it is to see a synagogue drive down the street!
Back in January 2019, I was thrilled to witness as the original home of DC’s Adas Israel Congregation was driven a block and a half to its new home where it will become part of the forthcoming Capital Jewish Museum. This was actually the third time the building had moved. Dedicated in 1876 with President Ulysses S. Grant in attendance, it was sold in 1908 when the growing congregation moved to their new home at Sixth and I Streets. It was home to a succession of churches over the next few decades, and later housed a bicycle shop and a grocery store, among other retail businesses. When construction of the Metro headquarters would have led to it being demolished, the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington saved the building and moved it three city blocks to 3rd and G Streets where it became the Lillian & Albert Small Jewish Museum. It was moved again in 2016, this time just 60 ft. At the ceremony for the 2019 move, Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton joked she hoped this would be the last move. Here’s a video about the building made for the 2016 move.
This idea of saving a building by moving it is an interesting angle to Jewish traces. Occasionally a community will move their building when it makes sense, like First Hebrew Congregation of Oakland did way back in 1896. (An unfortunate example is Congregation Ahavath Achim in Portland, Oregon, which was damaged during its move in 1962.) B’nai Moshe in Los Angeles even moved in 1957 to prevent the building from becoming a church. But what makes a physical building that is no longer in use so valuable as to justify the expense of bringing it somewhere else? What does that say about how we celebrate the past?
Also moved to be a museum, the Montefiore Institute was built in 1913 or 1916 in Sibbald, Alberta, just west of the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. It served the Montefiore colony of Jewish immigrants who had settled in Alberta in 1910, one a number of pioneer colonies in the US and Canada. Severe drought led to the community disbanding in the 1920s and the building was sold and moved to Hanna, Alberta in the 1940 where it was a private home into the 2000s. It was tracked down, restored, and moved to the Heritage Park Historical Village in Calgary at a cost of over a million dollars in 2008, where it is now known as “The Little Synagogue on the Prairie,” where its mission is “the education and enjoyment of the park’s visitors, in order to build bridges of understanding among people of all cultures and religions.”
Sometimes the building retains its original function. Possibly the first move of this kind for a synagogue was the San Leandro Hebrew Congregation in the Bay Area south of Oakland, also known as the Little Shul. The congregation was organized in 1881 and built the building in 1889, but by 1947 the renamed Temple Beth Sholom had outgrown it and built a new building. It was purchased by First Baptist Church in 1952, and then sold to the Judah Magnes Museum of Berkeley, who rented it out for church services. In 1970, Temple Beth Sholom purchased the building back and moved it to behind their new building, where it is again used for services and other functions. It may be the oldest standing synagogue building in the East Bay.
With a similar name and a similar story, we go to Texas. Built in 1883, repaired after a fire in 1893, the B’nai Abraham Synagogue served the community of Brenham, Texas and was the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the state. As its membership dwindled, as was true in many small towns in the South, regular services were last held in the 1960s. Leon Toubin, then 87, and his wife Mimi were the buildings only remaining caretakers in 2015. Meanwhile the Jewish community in Austin was growing. And so, in August 2015, the building was divided into thirds and driven 90 miles to Austin’s Dell Jewish Community Campus, where it now serves as the sanctuary for Congregation Tiferet Israel.
Madison, Wisconsin’s first synagogue, Gates of Heaven, was dedicated in 1863. The active congregation shrank quickly in the 1870s as families left the area, and by 1879 was renting the building to the Unitarian Society. They continued to rent the building to churches and other groups before selling it in 1916, after which it was a funeral home, a tearoom, a wartime storage facility during World War II, a church, a dental office, and ultimately the office of then Congressman Robert Kastenmeier. In 1970 plans were drafted by new owners Fiore Coal and Oil Company to sell it for commercial development, which would have had it replaced with an office building. Members of nearby Beth El Temple started the Gates of Heaven Synagogue Preservation Fund to buy, move, and restore the building. In 1971, the building was driven across the isthmus to James Madison Park, where it is now owned by the Madison Parks Department and is rented out for special events and weddings. Beth El Temple holds High Holiday services there as well.
The first Jewsh congregation in San Diego, Adath Yeshurun, formally incorporated as Beth Israel in 1887. They built a redwood building in 1889 at at Second Avenue and Beech Street. By 1923 they had outgrown the building and built a new one at 3rd Avenue and Laurel Street in Bankers Hill. The old building was sold and used as a bank and for other purposes before the Fraternal Spiritualist Church bought it in 1938. With downtown growing up around it by the 1970s, it was scheduled for demolition. A historic designation in 1973 delayed demolition, and Beth Israel's Rabbi Joel Goor and Beth Israel president Jim Milch, among others in the congregation, worked to purchase the building for $10,000 and preserve it. Beth Israel gave the building to San Diego County as an example of 19th-century religious architecture, with the condition that the county would move it to Heritage Park and restore the exterior. The structure was cut in half, moved, and reassembled. After a $450,000 restoration, it was rededicated in 1989 for its 100th anniversary. The County Department of Parks and Recreation rents the building for weddings, bar mitzvahs, and other events. (After moving to a third building in 2001, Beth Israel's second building was also saved from development by historic designation and was sold to another congregation, Ohr Shalom.)

Wake the devil
HELLBOY: WAKE THE DEVIL JUNE - OCTOBER 1996 BY MIKE MIGNOLA, JAMES SINCLAIR AND DAVE STEWART
SYNOPSIS (FROM HELLBOY WIKIA)
Part One The comic opens on the northern coast of Norway, inside the Arctic Circle, where a Zinco helicopter is landing in front of the castle that was seen as the end of Seed of Destruction. The head of the company, Roderick Zinco, breaks into the castle and is confronted by Karl Kroenen, Ilsa Haupstein and Leopold Kurtz but Zinco explains that he saw Grigori Rasputin, and promises them use everything he has.
One year later, in SoHo, New York City the Nazis kill the curator of a wax museum, Howard Steinman, otherwise known as Hans Ubler. At the B.P.R.D. Headquarters in Fairfield, Connecticut, Tom Manning and Kate Corrigan brief the agents about the life of Vladimir Giurescu and the fact that he could never die because when the full moon shines down on him at Castle Giurescu he heals himself. In 1944, Heinrich Himmler proposed project Vampir Sturm and a Nazi delegation, led by Ilsa Haupstein was sent to recruit Giurescu. After meeting with Giurescu, Hitler ordered the arrest, execution and destruction of the Giurescu family. However, it is possible that reveal the museum curator, could have smuggled Giurescu's body out of Germany before his corpse was burnt. The B.P.R.D. is concerned that someone might try to re-animate Giurescu in his Castle. However, there are three possibilities as to where Castle Giurescu is, so Tom Manning splits the agents into three groups; Hellboy on his own, Abe Sapien with Mr. Clark, and Liz Sherman with Bud Waller and Sidney Leach.
In Romania, Ilsa Haupstein opens the stolen box with Giurescu's corpse and orders the soldiers to take it to a specific room. Meanwile, in Norway, Kurtz and Kroenen watch Ilsa and it is revealed that they are manufacturing their own army. Back in Romania, The agents are all on a plane where Abe Sapien talks to Hellboy about the involvement of Project Ragna Rok because he thinks it's worrying Hellboy. Hellboy jumps out of the plane and his jetpack explodes, crashing Hellboy into Castle Giurescu.
Part Two Ilsa orders Unmensch, a cyborg Nazi, to kill Hellboy and they fight until they both fall through the floor. A flashback to Tarmagant Island, 1944 shows Rasputin ordering Ilsa, Kroenen and Kurtz to go to Norway. In the present, Rasputin appears and tells her to leave the castle and that the next time she sees Giurescu that he will be young again. In the castle, Hellboy wakes up with the Nazi gone, leaving behind only his metal arm.
In a near-by village, an old man tells his daughter to leave with her children and to never come back and that it is "too late" for him to leave.
Hellboy follows a trace of blood and finds a man eating the Nazi's leg, who reveals that he is Vladimir Giurescu's father, and that it is the goddess Hecate who brings Giurescu back to life. When Hellboy asks where Giurescu is, the man refuses to tell him and Hellboy burns him to death. When Hellboy leaves the room he remembers the old man said something about a moon door and sees a door with a moon shape on it, and inside is the box with the corpse and the three soldier's heads in front. But he is surrounded by ravens who turn into the Women of Thessaly and start attacking him.
Part Three At Castle Giurescu, Hellboy shoots the Women of Thessaly until Giurescu comes out of his box. When Hellboy tries to kill him, Giurescu turns into a raven and Hellboy stabs him. Giurescu falls into a stone coffin and ends up underground. When Hellboy gets there Giurescu is on the floor with the knife in his chest but then he turns into snakes and gets away. After Hellboy leaves the tomb, Hecate brings Giurescu back to life. Rasputin tells Isla about his life and offers Ilsa Haupstein to be reborn, like he was.
In the ruins of Czege Castle, Romania, Liz Sherman, Bud Waller and Sidney Leach find a door which leads to a huge room with a lifeless homunculus inside. Liz touches a hole in his chest but she can't let go and the homunculus comes to life as Liz is transferring her energy into him. Bud shoots her arm to get her free. The homunculus panics, snaps Bud Wallers neck and escapes.
In Norway, Roderick Zinco brings Kroenen the head of Professor Herman von Klempt, so that Kroenen can include von Klempt in their plans. In Romania, at The Monastery of St. Bartholomew, Stephen, the old man from part 2 tells his brother, a priest, that the town will go back to its "old ways" because he can sense Giurescu but his brother doesn't believe him. Back at Castle Giurescu, Hellboy finds a room full of explosives and sets a timer for them to go off in one hour.
Part Four As Hellboy leaves the castle, he is confronted by Hecate in snake form, who tries to get Hellboy to go back to his "old kind" and tells him that he lost himself in humanity. Hellboy and Hecate start fighting as she tells him that he will bring the end of the world and that he cannot escape his own destiny. Hellboy spears her and they both smash through the wall and her skin and flesh burn in the daylight just as the explosives go off and the Castle blows up with Hellboy just outside.
Abe Sapien and Clark report back to B.P.R.D. HQ, from the ruins of Szentes Castle. They found nothing but see a pillar of smoke from Hellboy's location, and are told to go and find Hellboy.
In Romania, the Baba Yaga's servant, Koku, brings Rasputin an Iron Maiden to initiate Ilsa Hapustein's rebirth, she goes into it and is immediately killed. Rasputin tells Koku that he will be back to see Baba Yaga.
Stephen and two other men find Hellboy's body outside the ruins of Castle Giurescu to drive him to the crossroads.
In Norway, von Klempt tempts Kroenen to join him instead of going along with Rasputin's plans but Kurtz gets angry and tries to kill Von Klempt. Kroenen tries to stop Kurtz and ends up stabbing and killing him.
In Romania, Hellboy is chained to a thick wooden pole. Rasputin tells him that he is there to rot.
Part Five Abe Sapien and Clark land in the Romanian village where everyone's house is boarded up, with crosses painted on the doors and windows. They enter the church and see Stephen's brother standing with Hellboy's signal belt in hand. He is unresponsive and when Cark touches his shoulder, the priest's head falls off and the pair fall through the floor. Clark is impaled on a spike, but Abe survives the fall. Rasputin confronts Abe, and threatens that just as Abe once speared him (in Seed of Destruction) so too would he one day spear Abe. The Priest's decapitated head says "Abraham Sapien. Do you hear... sunken bells are tolling for thee. Out of caverns of Num-Yabisc, dark and terrible deep, the ocean is calling her children home."
At the crossroads, Hellboy is still chained to a thick wooden pole and is confronted by a fully re-animated Vladimir Giurescu on horseback. Hellboy cracks the pole and hits the horse with it, the horse and Giurescu instantly turn into bones. The Iron Maiden turns into snake-like like Hecate and tells Hellboy that he cannot escape his destiny. She swollows him, his horns fully re-grow and he sees the Ogdru-Jahad before he refuses to help end the world and snaps off his horns. He appears back at the crossroads where Kate Corrigan finds him.
In Norway, Rasputin confronts von Klempt, Kroenen and Zinco and temporarily blinds Zinco who accidentally presses a button that blows up the whole castle. In a helicopter above Romania, Hellboy is told that there was no sign of the iron maiden. At the end of the issue, it is revealed that the skeleton of Vladimir Giurescu was in the process of being moved to [B.P.R.D.] HQ, but while it was temporarily placed in storage at the Bucharest airport it disappeared and has never been recovered. It is also revealed that the head of Father Nicholas Budenz never spoke again but continued to be the focus of poltergeist activities, including sudden temperature drops and the levitation of objects, for weeks.
Epilogue At the World Tree, Yggdrasil, the Baba Yaga tells Rasputin that he cannot be a god and that he has failed. She asks Rasputin to stay with her but he decides to go on trying to make himself a god.
REVIEW
This story is the natural continuation of Seed of Destruction. Seems like we never saw Hellboy cut his horns until this moment (kind of spoiled by years of Hellboy in the movies).
The horror element is the strongest one in this story, but you have to appreciate how grounded Hellboy sounds. His dialogues make a lot of sense wherever he is, no matter the circumstance. He is not prone to melodramatic expositions.
Mignola is playing a very long game about Hellboy’s purpose and origins. I think it works for Hellboy because it’s his creation and being an indie product, has its own following that will read everything to stay updated. It’s not that you cannot enjoy this story by itself, but there are too many references and characters from previous stories that are not properly re-introduced.
I give this story a score of 8

Canadian oil producers eye new pipeline route to Gulf Coast as Marathon reverses Capline conduit
CALGARY — Canadian oil producers may soon enjoy higher prices for the crude they sell into the U.S. as a major south-to-south pipeline is in the final stages of a reversal — an under-appreciated match that event that could lift the prospects of the domestic oil industry.
Ohio-based Marathon Pipelines LLC filed tariffs for transportation of crude oil on its Capline pipeline from Patoka, Ill. to St. James, Louisiana for rates effective Oct. 25, according to RBN Energy, an energy markets consultancy.
Capline was the largest south-to-north flowing pipeline in the United States with a capacity of 1.2 million barrels of oil per day, but owner Marathon Petroleum has been working to reverse the flow since 2017, which would allow both heavy and light oil to flow from a storage hub in the U.S. Midwest to a major refining centre on the Gulf Coast. The company website notes that the reversal will be completed this year.
“They’re doing line fill right now,” BMO Capital Markets analyst Randy Ollenberger said of the Capline, adding that he expected the pipeline to shrink Western Canada Select discounts relative to West Texas Intermediate oil prices to US$10 per barrel. A barrel of WCS traded up 1.67 percent Thursday to US$67.08, which implies a US$15.50 per barrel discount relative to the WTI price of US$82.58 per barrel.
“We don’t know who has contracts on the Capline, but we do think that everybody benefits in the sense that the spread comes in. You don’t have to be physically shipping on the Capline to benefit,” Ollenberger said, adding that he expects to see the impact of the line on the bottomlines of Canadian producers in the second quarter of 2022.
Oil producers contacted by the Financial Post said they expected the project would improve the returns of their barrels.
“I’m excited about it. I think the Capline reversal would certainly be a positive for Canadian producers and improve pipeline optionality, specifically for the heavier producers, but it’ll de-weight the entire pipeline system in Canada,” Grant Fagerheim, president and CEO of Whitecap Resources Inc., advised the Financial Post, referring to problems where Canadian oil exports have exceeded pipeline capacity in the past.
Fagerheim said he would look at using the Capline to move more of his company’s oil to the U.S. Gulf Coast, adding the option of delivering oil to either the U.S. Midwest or the U.S. Gulf Coast provides some “insurance” for the oilpatch by providing a diversity of markets.
Credit rating agency Fitch also expects the Capline reversal to draw crude oil from Canada, North Dakota and the “mid-continent” into the U.S. Gulf Coast.
To use the Capline, Canadian oil producers will need to ship their crude on Enbridge Inc.’s Mainline pipeline system to the U.S. Midwest, and then switch to the Enbridge’s Southern Access pipeline connected to the Patoka oil storage hub, which provides direct access to the Capline and a straight shot to the refineries of the U.S. Gulf Coast.
The Capline reversal is coming into service in tandem with Enbridge’s 760,000-BPD Line 3 replacement project, which the Calgary-based pipeline giant completed in September and is now fully operational. The Capline rates range from $1.75 per barrel for shippers committing to move more than 100,000 barrels per day on the line to $3.75 per barrel on a spot basis.
For years, Canadian oil producers sold the majority of their barrels to refiners in the U.S. Midwest. TC Energy Corp.’s Keystone XL pipeline was proposed as a way to reduce the dependence on that market by taking 830,000 BPD directly to the U.S. Gulf Coast, which is home to the world’s largest awareness of heavy oil refineries.
At times when gasoline demand in the Midwest declined or refineries in the region were offline for maintenance, the Canadian heavy oil barrels, called Western Canada Select, suffered largely — sometimes as high as US$40 per barrel — discounts relative to the West Texas Intermediate benchmark.
The same thing happened when Canadian oil production outstripped pipeline capacity in late 2018. The Capline reversal functions like a “mini Keystone XL,” said Rory Johnston, managing director and market economist at Price Street in Toronto, adding that it would provide oil producers with the option to ship to the Midwest or the Gulf Coast.
“On its face, I don’t think it should have a direct narrowing impact (on WCS/WTI differentials) because it’s not really increasing egress from (Alberta) proper, but there is a pretty robust monopsony and buyer concentration for Canadian players in the U.S. Midwest,” Johnston said.
“It reduces the likelihood of big, big blowouts should you see issues like heavier maintenance (in the Midwest region), for instance,” he said.
“This will certainly help to keep the differentials tighter than what we’ve seen in the past because you’ll have more egress optionality out of Western Canada,” said Martin King, senior analyst with RBN Energy, adding he expected the reversal could help differentials trade within the US$12 per barrel to US$14 per barrel range.
Marathon did not respond to a request for comment on when the reversed Capline would begin flowing large volumes of heavy crude oil. The project is scheduled to begin shipping small volumes of light oil this year, followed by heavier blends in 2022.

We're now going to explore that which remains. And pardon me while I wander and reminisce. Across: 1. Cook Islands language: MAORI. The Cook Islands are in the South Pacific ocean with 15 islands having a combined total land area of about 93 square miles. For perspective, the city of Chicago covers about 234 sq. miles. Los Angeles 469, and Houston 600 sq. miles. The land area of the Cook Islands is about the size of Milwaukee (96), Sacramento (98), Lincoln, NE (89) or Tallahassee (100 sq. mi.). Spanish explorers visited the islands in the late 1500s and named one of the islands St. Bernard. British Navigator James Cook came to the islands in the 1770s, and named one of the islands Hervey Island. The name "Cook Islands" first appeared on a Russian naval chart in the 1820s. 78 % of the people on the island nation are Māori and another 7.8 % are part Māori. The official languages are English and Cook Islands Māori. The capital (and largest city) is Avarua, which might be a good answer in a crossword puzzle. 6. Place for mascara: LASH. 10. Rims: LIPs. 14. Ray __, NBAer with the most regular season 3-point field goals: ALLEN. Retired HOF'er with 18 years in the NBA making 40 % of his attempts from beyond the line for 2973 buckets. Active player Stephen Curry has hit 43.5 % of his 3-pointers during his 11 year NBA career, and is about 500 makes behind. Note the consistency in the non-shooting hand. 15. Northern Oklahoma city: ENID. Known as the "Wheat Capital" of Oklahoma for its immense grain storage capacity. It has the third-largest grain storage capacity in the world. Yes, that is a line of rail cars in the foreground. The place is huge. There were some great shots on The Smithsonian Channel's Aerial America - Oklahoma the other day. If you don't get that channel, watch for it to be shown on The Smithsonian's Aerial America YouTube channel. 16. Legal memo phrase: INRE. 19. Campus area: QUAD. 20. Place with shells: SEASIDE. 23. Informal negative: AIN'T. Isn't wrong. 25. Chopper topper: ROTOR. One of my part time military jobs (ODAA - other duties as assigned)) was working as part of the team at the "Can Point" when I was assigned to Coleman Army Airfield, Coleman Barracks, 70th AVIM (aviation intermediate maintenance) Battalion, 1st Support Brigade (later, 21st Support Command), USAEUR (US Army Europe) at Sandhofen (Mannheim), Germany. My real job was in the computer vans, 3rd shift, feeding stack after stack of 80 column cards into a card reader, and then inserting magnetic ledger stock into the platen feed of an NCR 500 computer system. It was all part of the inventory control system used to keep track of orders and disbursements and stock on hand. Occasionally keypunching new cards to replace mangled cards, and running the 088 card sorter from time to time after dropping a tray full of cards. Tray after tray, night after night, week after week. So monotonous. I digress. Any rotor wing aircraft that went down in USAEUR were transported to the cannibalization point for selected salvage. Rotor wings could not be salvaged for re-use, but were in demand by Air Cavalry battalions and companies around the country. They would be used as art on the hangars or as gate toppers at entrances to Kasernes that housed rotor wing companies. Most impressive and awe inspiring was when the heavy lift helicopters came in for inspection and maintenance. The roar of the engines and sound of the rotors pounding the air was thunderous as the beasts approached and landed on the tarmac. CH-47 "Chinook" on the left and CH-54 "Tarhe" (Skycrane) on the right. The Skycranes were being phased out of military service in Europe in the late '70s when I was there, and many passed through our airfield on their way back to the U.S. 32. Salchow relatives: AXELs. Half of Mork's sign-off: NANU. Mork was the ET from the planet Ork on the sitcom Mork and Mindy. 64. Brew hue: AMBER. 65. __ d'oeuvres: HORS. 66. First column to add, usually: ONEs. Units. The first column of whole numbers to be added in a place-value numbering system. Typically in base-10 (decimal) for most people, and the second column would be tens, the third hundreds and so on. I know you knew that, but I'm building here. Programmers and others in technology use other place-value numbering systems, such as in base-8 (octal) where the columns would be units, eights, sixty-fours and so on, and in base-16 (hexadecimal) they would be units, sixteens, and the third column two hundred fifty-sixes. Quick, what's the first numbering system that comes to mind that is not place-value ? 67. Funny Anne: MEARA. So many roles, but perhaps best known as one half of the Stiller and Meara comedy team. Down: 1. Second-smallest of eight: MARS. Our solar system's planets. The "Red Planet", fourth from the sun. Mercury is the smallest. 2. Ointment ingredient: ALOE. Keep washing your hands and try to find a sanitizer with aloe in it. Does aloe work ? Evaluation of aloe vera gel gloves in the treatment of dry skin associated with occupational exposure. 3. Cantina crock: OLLA. 4. Works the game: REFs. Referees the game or bout. 5. Team with the longest World Series drought (71 years): INDIANS. Should be championship drought. They were in the 2016 World Series, and they were leading it 3 games to 1 in the best of 7 series over the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs won the next two games, evening the series at 3 each. In the seventh and deciding game that many pundits have called one of the greatest game 7s (and series) in MLB history, the teams were tied at 6 runs each after 9 innings. Then the skies opened up with a sudden downpour. After the rain delay play resumed, and the Cubs scored two to take an 8-6 lead in the top of the tenth inning. In the bottom of the tenth, the home field Indians plated one run with two out before the Tribe's loyal fans had their hopes squashed on a weak grounder to third baseman Kris Bryant. It was only the fifth time in World Series history that a Game 7 went to extra innings, and it was the first time the extra inning Game 7 was won by a road team. The series and Game 7 were both dubbed "instant classics". The Cubs won and ended a 108 year championship drought of their own; the longest in professional sports history. 6. Folklore tale: LEGEND. An example of early American literature was Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleep Hollow, but what inspired the work ? 7. Suffix with hex-: ANE. 8. "Absolutely!" in Madrid: SI SI. 9. Best Buy purchase: HDTV. 10. __ license: LIQUOR. 11. Greenland language: INUIT. 12. Madrid museum: PRADO. 13. Where the same questions are asked annually: SEDER. 18. "__ it my way": I DID. 22. Ethically uncertain, in Sussex: GREY. I loved Dash-T's explanation a few weeks ago that, "Gray is a color, while grey is a colour". 24. Spells: TRANCEs. 26. Treat holders: PAWs. 27. Nerve impulse carrier: AXON. 28. HR dept. concern: RELO. United Van Lines packed up my belongings and car when I was relocated from Houston to Chicago in late '87. The company footed the bill for my relocation moving and living expenses. Actually lived for almost two months in a new Holiday Inn that was still in the process of being constructed. Then January came, and I learned fast that my southeast Texas blood and wardrobe was ill-equipped to deal with Chicago's gusting winds and biting cold that would shiver your bones. I ran to the mall and bought thermal underwear and the heaviest lined Burberry style trench coat I could find. I didn't bother to ask HR to foot the bill on those items. I know'd the answer was NO ! 29. Alien from Melmac: ALF. Another extraterrestrial from TV land. Anne Meara played the grandmother in occasional appearances on the sitcom. 30. __ dancing: ICE. Like figure skating, but more freeform and interpretive. 31. "Oy __!": VEY. Oy vey ! This crossword puzzle review has gone on too long. But wait, there's more ! 34. Boo: JEER. Please. Wild place: ZOO. The nickname for Gerszewski Barracks in Knielingen (Karlsruhe) Germany, my second station while serving there. The Zoo had an entirely different atmosphere than Coleman. Still the military, but significantly fewer officers and Warrant Officers (mostly helicopter pilots at Coleman) and MPs than Coleman. Definitely more relaxed. Coleman was the home to the USAEUR Confinement Facility, where soldiers in serious trouble awaited trial, were serving sentences up to a year, or for the most serious offenses, were awaiting orders for transportation back to the U.S. to serve extended time at Ft Leavenworth, KA. 42. Jam component: AUTO. Seriously, was I the only one that first thought of pectin ? 43. Type of fastball grip: TWO SEAM. Baseball. Even ardent fans may not be aware of the arsenal that Yu Darvish brings to the mound. 44. Blue Ribbons, e.g.: PABSTs. PBRs, for short. Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Not my cuppa, but it'll do in a pinch. 45. Monkey used in research: RHESUS. 46. Future junior: SOPH. 47. Big hit: SMASH. As in an exceptionally popular TV, movie or stage show, or for tennis fans such as Sandyanon, the return shot answer to a poorly placed near-net lob shot. 48. :50, another way: TEN TO. The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) are the two largest sanctioning bodies for drag racing. The Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, Wisconsin is still going strong. The "Sunday, Sunday, Sunday" radio commercials for drag racing events can still be heard on radio stations across the country. Well, maybe not right now, but they'll be back. 61. Austin-to-Dallas dir.: NNE. For some, I-35 is known as Main Street, Texas. Almost half of the Texas population (and most of my siblings and extended family) lives along this central artery that starts in Laredo, Texas near the Rio Grande, and exits the state just north of Gainseville at the Red River. From there I-35 travels generally NNE all the way to Duluth, Minnesota, comparatively just shy of the border with Canada. The reconstruction and widening of I-35 that started in 2012 is the second largest infrastructure project in the history of the state for TxDOT, the state's Department of Transportation. The first ? Building I-35 in the first place, which started in the '50s as part of Eisenhower's Interstate System. It will be nice, and much safer when it is finally done. Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Charlotte, NC
Hello, my dear friends. How are you today? I have to take a minute to tell you all how grateful I am for your presence here on Home Bunch. I took a few days off last week and I have to tell you that I feel so Blessed for taking this little break and be able to be back to this space that is ours. This short break allowed me to analyze my gratitude for all of the important things in my life and this is a big part of it. Thank you for coming here, for reading the blog and for your loyalty. I certainly hope that you always find inspiration and knowledge here, and also feel a little lighter and happier every time you come to the blog.
Talking about feeling happy, this is exactly how I feel every time I feature this talented builder (previously featured here & here) and it’s truly great to have them on our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” today. Here, the builder shares some incredible details – not to mention, all sources – with us. Read on:
“Pike Properties builds in the urban and close to town neighborhoods in Charlotte, NC. Typically lots range from 50 feet to 60 feet in width, with an occasional needle in a haystack lot that is wider. This homesite was a needle in a haystack. Located on a quiet cul-de-sac and measuring 114 feet at the setback, and 224 feet at the rear property line, this homesite allowed Pike Properties to spread their wings and fly. What that meant was that they were able to build an expansive property without constraints and along with it, make it truly amazing both inside and out. The resale value was maximized thanks to the property, so splurging on interior finishes was a must. What is in store for you in this home tour is something you definitely don’t want to skip over! Let’s take a closer look.”
Feel free to pin, save and share this beautiful home.
Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Charlotte, NC
From the conceptual rendering of this home’s exterior, something very special was born. Pike Properties actually pre-sold this home before breaking ground after a couple saw it online and barged into their office essentially begging for them to allow them to purchase so early on. Normally, Pike will pre-sell but that usually isn’t until after framing. Change orders aren’t allowed, FYI. This home spoke volumes and was so hard to find that interest was shown so early on. Pike agreed to pre-sale and this home was under contract before the first dirt was moved and footings poured.
You will notice that this home is broken into two sections, divided by a “cat walk” and lower breezeway which connects the garage and mudroom on the main floor, and upstairs living spaces with a bonus room/flex space up. By designing it this way, it doesn’t overwhelm and seem too large. The presence remains humble.
Of course Pike had to paint the home WHITE. White houses are just oh so popular, and with a large front facade, they didn’t want to risk another darker color, or even a tan. Plus, the white paint really allows the cedar accents to pop. Benjamin Moore Olympic Mountains was selected for the paint color, with cedar accents, garage door, and fir front door stained in Benjamin Moore Hidden Valley. To blend, the roof chose is CertainTeed Sunrise Cedar. Dark Bronze metal roof accents and gutters contrast ever so slightly.
Genuine Hardie Siding was used on the exterior, for low-maintenance and quality purposes, and you just can’t beat their warranty!

It’s hard to decide if this home looks better during the day or at dusk! One thing is for sure though, when the sun sets over this residence, lights come on inside, and dinner is prepared, there is no place better to call HOME.
Kitchen
There are a handful of different directions you can go with kitchen design these days, and here Pike Properties decided to use neutral, crisp, and clean elements that blend seamlessly but also have some visual interest. Stark white was a no go, but instead the custom, locally crafted cabinetry is painted in “Benjamin Moore 1472 Silver Chain” which has a calming gray tone. The Schaub and Company Menlo Park Satin Brass hardware contrasts nicely with the cabinet color and the brass is actually toned down a bit by the gray versus a white.
Guests are sure to be impressed by the 60″ professional grade Frigidaire refrigerator and food storage isn’t an issue here. The fact of the matter is, that for the price, this makes a bigger statement than you’ll find with any other fridge on the market.
Refrigerator, Freezer & Trim Kit.
Backsplash & Countertop
Pike Properties views the range wall of a kitchen as a piece or artwork or the centerpiece of the space. Typically, there is no wall space to hang art in a kitchen, so the result is needing to use practical aspects of the space and turn them into artwork. That is what you see here with the picture frame accent tile over the 48″ range. This tile is by no means cheap, but when using such a small quantity is relatively affordable and makes a statement that is unlike anything else. The tile is Soho Studio Empress Helena, and it is truly artwork. In person, the small cubes sparkle and brass banding shines bright. It is a sight to see.
Pike stuck with a simple range hood design so as to not distract from the backsplash masterpiece.
The countertop surfaces are covered in striking Cosmos Mont Blanc marble which offers white, gray, and charcoal tones.

Hardwood Flooring
The open concept kitchen and dining room is ever so slightly broken up by the large cased opening. The floors you see here span throughout 90% of the home (minus tiled areas) and are 4″ #1 White Oak in Rubio Monocoat Mud Light finish. Rubio Monocoat products offer many benefits including durability, eco-friendly ingredients, and single layer application.

Dining Room
Removed just enough, but still open to the kitchen is the sole dining space in the home. The formal dining room, the breakfast room, the kids homework table (well actually there’s a built-in space for that…. stay tuned!), and whatever else you use the dining table for, this is the spot in this home. That said, it was important to go formal enough, but still keep it casual when selected design elements, trim detail, etc. It even started with the layout. When working with their award-wining architects, Frusterio Design, Pike Properties made sure to have the French door set leading out to the rear covered porch from the dining room to keep it a bit casual and allow for easy indoor/outdoor flow.
Two elements of trim detail liven up the space and a hint of elegance. Simple Shiplap wainscoting standing 48″ off the floor dresses up the wall space and lessens the need for large and expensive artwork, which is especially nice considering that most of the wall space is taken up by windows and doors. The ceiling trim detail is comprised of two elements and is a favorite detail to add to a dining space at Pike Properties. It is called an X-beam ceiling formed by 2 flush beams (framed in wood and wrapped in drywall). The inlaid V-groove trim makes everything stand out and adds definition to what could end up being hard to notice.

Covered Rear Porch
This home maintains complete privacy at the rear, so bring on the outdoor living and plenty of evenings spent by the fireplace! With a vaulted ceiling soaring 24′ high and covered in stained V-groove, the grandeur doesn’t end inside. Pike ensured this space was large enough to accommodate two separate seating areas, one for lounging by the gas fireplace and the other for dining al-fresco.
Living Room
The main living space in this home is right here, located in the heart of the home between the kitchen area and owner’s retreat. Of course, immediately you notice the 15′ set of Panoramic Doors leading outside. WOW! These doors are manufactured custom to order and are made out of Aluminum in a bronze finish. Five individual panels fold on top of each other to create a fully opening wall of glass. See the next photo for a fully opened view.
Paint Color
Paint colors remain neutral and calming throughout the home. Pike has standard colors they always use to keep their homes consistent and that go best with their style and vibe. For main living spaces, hallways, secondary bedrooms and utility areas Pike uses Benjamin Moore Dove Wing. All inside trim tends to be Benjamin Moore White Dove. For the Owner’s Retreat spaces, Benjamin Moore Halo is utilized to create a soothing and warm toned space without going away from the neutral theme. Secondary bathrooms are all painted Benjamin Moore Moonshine.
Great Quality Rugs: here, here, here, here, here, here, here & here.
Cat Walk
Remember on the front exterior when the “catwalk” was mentioned? Well here it is on the inside! Essentially a fancy hallway, this area connects the main upstairs living area with a bonus/flex space over the garage. Windows on both sides looking out makes you feel like you are walking on a catwalk, or over a bridge.
This is a good time to mention that all the interiors doors in this home are painted in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore.
Master Bedroom
Ensuring the highest probability of sweet dreams is at the top of Pike Properties priority list. A bedroom should always be calming, relaxing, and serene. The Crate and Barrel Finley drum pendant softens the spaces, and texture and visual interest is evoked with the diagonal shiplap bed wall. For just a tad extra in trim, doing a diagonal shiplap bed wall is a perfect way to take your bedroom to new heights.

Master Bathroom
Everything is not all sunshine and butterflies in home building, that is for sure. One story about this space demonstrates just a hint at that. Mirrors were completed left out of selections as an accidental oversight. It was three days before the professional photo shoot and mirrors were being hung when that was realized. A quick online search and scramble ensued and these were the result. Pretty fitting and amazingly blended for a last minute selection!
The rustic warmth the Restoration Hardware Printmakers vanity (similar here) brings in to the space is much needed to keep it from being all gray and white tones. Pike also loves incorporating rustic styling into their builds.
How often do you accidentally splash a little water onto your drywall behind the sink when brushing teeth or washing your hair? This likely has happened to you a time or two, or 100. Not only is the tile accent wall stylish, it is also functional. Splashing water on tile is much less noticeable and definitely not as likely to prompt you to grab a towel to dry it up.

Spa-like
Whether you are a bath or shower person, you are in for a treat in this spa-like setting. The walk-in shower is of a very unique design and also is lacking any sort of door or glass. The actual shower with dual heads is out of view inside the section to the right. The area where you first step into from the bathroom floor is actually known as a dry area and is where the towel racks are located. It is meant to be a spot for drying off but without having to worry about a floor mat or getting water all over the bathroom floor. Very practical and stylish!
Tub- Signature Hardware Nina Acrylic 70″ Freestanding Tub.

Chandelier- Visual Comfort Venetian – Others: here, here, here, here, here, here, here & here.
Guest Bathroom
This is the downstairs guest bath which could very well be used as an in-law suite. Pike Properties wanted to keep it a little more formal and elegant by bringing in the brushed brass fixtures and picking a furniture vanity with more traditional lines and trim. Plus, just wait until you see the shower! Paint color is Benjamin Moore Moonshine.
Vanity- Allen and Roth Perrella 37 inch – Similar: here & here.
Mirror- Allen and Roth – similar here.
Faucet- Delta Dryden 8″ in Champagne Bronze.

Shower
In addition to the beauty of it, there are a handful of benefits to a zero-entry or curbless shower.
– They are functional. Anyone and everyone can get in and out of a zero entry shower and the risk or falling is minimal. No curb to trip over.
-They are easier to clean. Not as many tight areas and a seamless flow with your bathroom floor is a breeze to clean.
-You are left with clear visibility of the shower floor, so that pretty tile that was splurged on can actually be seen.
A curbless shower with hinged glass enclosure is a win-win and aesthetically pleasing and clean.

Upstairs Guest Bath
The best part about this bathroom can be seen in the mirror. The dark navy subway tiled walk-in shower contrasts so well with the white around it and makes the shower a focal point of the room. Accenting a shower with dark tile is something more people should do!
Vanity- Allen and Roth Presnell 37 inch in White.

Laundry Room
Cabinet Paint Color- Benjamin Moore White Dove.
Laundry is typically not fun, but at least by adding some exciting and funky tile it can become just a bit more enjoyable. Storage is not a problem thanks to the full-height built in cabinet unit.
Floor Tile- Jeffrey Court – similar here.
Homework Nook
Tired of the kids homework cluttering the kitchen counter, dining table, or coffee table in the living room? A great solution is a dedicated spot for homework, and there is just about no better way to create that than what you see here. A custom built-in desk with spots for two chairs and plenty of storage is topped with Aspen CQ Quartz making for the fanciest and most perfect spot to get homework done. This is also a wonderful spot for crafting. Library sconces provide great lighting, so no need for desk lamps. Lastly, no one wants to stare at a blank wall when thinking about a algebra problem, so the wallpaper accent is just what the teacher ordered!
Cabinet Paint Color- Benjamin Moore Gray Owl.
Wallpaper- Graham and Brown Innocence Gray.
Sconces- Savoy House Morland in Matte Black – similar here & here.
Chandelier
This chandelier by Kichler is located in the upstairs loft area.
Mudroom Drop Zone
Drop Zone Paint Color- Benjamin Moore Hale Navy.
Pike Properties believes that a drop zone can become a focal point and not just a spot to throw shoes, coats, and keys. The same custom cabinet maker that crafted the kitchen cabinets also made this piece. One of the first things you notice is the rich Walnut wood bench and live edge coat hook backing. The coat hook fixture puts a fun twist on a typical row of coat hooks in a drop zone. Cabinet and cubby space is abundant, as you’d expect.
Don’t miss the built-in dog bowls down in the lower corner with custom cut out dog done openings! The comfortable livability of dogs even went into the design and building of this residence.
Many thanks to the builder (& McKay!

Baidu Cloud rings in the Chinese New Year with a new blockchain engine.
On February 14, Chinese company Baidu Cloud introduced its Baidu Blockchain Engine (BBE), an operating system to help developers create dApps.
BBE has three primary components: artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing. Baidu Cloud says this "ABC" principle determines the superstructure: "The troika of computing, storage, and networking as the underlying architecture affects almost the entire blockchain product landscape."
Baidu Blockchain developed BBE to serve six functions: a trusted computing environment, scalable storage, trusted cross-chain interaction, high performance and throughput, smart contract support, and contract security audit. The goal is that BBE can be flexible enough to confront multiple technical challenges and provide support in these areas so that developers can create useful applications for a wide variety of industries.
Baidu Cloud hopes that by offering a strong blockchain platform, it can empower companies and developers to build dApps suited to the needs of particular companies. Baidu Cloud gave several potential uses cases for dApps built atop BBE, including transportation of hazardous chemicals and tools for consumer finance.
BBE is the latest development in a series of moves to facilitate the adoption and application of blockchain technology. In January 2018, Baidu launched Baidu Trust, a blockchain-as-a-service (BaaS) platform. In April, the company launched another blockchain platform called Totem, which is a tool to help protect photographers' work against unauthorized use and also to connect clients to stock photos. And last June, Baidu announced the development of Super Chain to optimize energy efficiency in crypto mining.

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 1/13/2019
Good MORNING #realdreamchasers! Here is The Chase Files Daily News Cap for Sunday 13thJanuary 2019. Remember you can read full articles for FREE via Barbados Today (BT) or Barbados Government Information Services (BGIS) OR by purchasing by purchasing a Saturday Sun Nation Newspaper (SS).
GOVERNMENT ON FAST TRACK TO ECONOMIC RECOVERY – Government is moving quickly to turn Barbados’ economic situation around so that persons can once again be employed. Minister in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Investment, Marsha Caddle, made this known Friday, as she addressed the “Blast-Off” seminar held by the Barbados Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors at the Hilton Barbados Resort. She stated: “We are not sprinting for show, we are running because we understand that many of our decisions will cause and are causing some pain and suffering. And so, we …have to complete the job early so that the recovery can come early and we can get people back into jobs early.” Noting that Barbados’ agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) enabled the Ministry to quickly secure supplementary agreements with other multilateral development banks, Minister Caddle pointed out: “With their help and changing confidence in the private sector, our reserves rose from $400 million in May to, as of this morning, $1,060 million. We saved the dollar. “We settled one of the largest domestic debt restructurings as a per cent of the national economy in history. Our debt has already declined from near 170 per cent of GDP in May last year to 124 per cent this year. The IMF projects it will hit 60 per cent by 2033. As a consequence of the change in the way we are managing our finances; our credit rating had its first uplift in over a decade. More is to come.” Caddle also stressed that Government was committed to ensuring that Barbados never had to return to its current economic position. “We have made significant reforms to monetary and financial governance to ensure we do not get back here again. The printing of dollars that caused our reserves to run out has ceased. We are running a surplus for the first time in a long time,” she disclosed. Pointing out that Government had successfully mitigated the high number of job losses predicted, Minister Caddle said that while Government knew it could not save every job it would “protect every Barbadian”. She added: “Those jobs may not look the same as they did. The future of work is changing in organization, [and] in flexibility.” (BT)
MORE POWER – It will soon be more difficult to get away with stealing money and materials from Government. The Mia Mottley Administration is seeking to strengthen the powers of the Auditor General by enabling that officer to report any suspicious transactions directly to the police, and for fines and/or imprisonment for those who ignore summons to attend their investigative hearings. The new thrust will also see tougher financial checks being done within ministries and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) with the introduction of an Internal Audit Office – which will be responsible, generally, for conducting audits of all public entities. These are just two of the provisions of the new Public Finance Management Act 2018, which is before a joint select committee of Parliament for review. Two meetings of that committee were held last week in the Senate chambers, with another scheduled for tomorrow. The bill was laid in the House of Assembly last December 18. (SS)
FARMERS ASSURED SPILLS ‘WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN’ – A three-million-dollar project to repair oil pipeline damage in the community of Pegwell, Christ Church, is being overshadowed by residents’ concerns of a long-standing environmental catastrophe. While a senior official of the Barbados National Terminal Company Ltd (BNTCL) has assured the residents oil damage to their farms and water will not occur again, many of the victims voiced concerns about a loss of income, lack of compensation and contaminated wells during a town hall meeting Friday evening. “We want to ensure what happened in Gibbons will never happen again,” technical operations superintendent Terrence Straughn told community members of Pegwell. Straughn and consultant Barry Mayers, while empathising with residents, noted the environmental damage could be traced to prior ownership of the oil pipeline and not the state-owned oil company. Farmer Wesley Nurse and other residents traced the damage from oil spillage to between 500 and 600 acres of land to Shell oil company, a prior operator of the pipeline. (SS)
COMPANY DENIES DAMAGED TANKS – Roto Plastics Barbados Ltd. has thrown cold water on suggestions that its tanks used by the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) in the community outreach programme were sold damaged. Earlier this week a number of 1000-gallon water storage tanks purchased by corporate Barbados from Roto Plastics for the authority and installed in different districts, ruptured. While the BWA has pointed to what it deemed “vandalism”, an internal report from 2015 prepared by the authority’s now former mechanical engineer Edmund Brathwaite questioned the “integrity” and “stability” of the same tanks after a similar incident. But while Roto’s acting operations manager Jackie Wilson maintained that she was unaware of the 2015 incident, she dismissed any suggestion that the recent rupture was due to their tanks being faulty. “It is definitely, categorically not. Roto Plastics does not sell damaged tanks. People come in and say they only want one to catch rainwater, but our policy dictates that we do not sell damaged tanks. We cannot sell them. Even for a reduced cost we do not sell because it is dangerous and we have a reputation to uphold. We give quality, we give supreme service to people that come in to our office so this is totally bizarre,” she told THE NATION. (SS)
BATTLING IN COURT FOR 21 YEARS – The legal owners of what has become the biggest squatting village in Barbados are finally speaking out. Valdeen Broomes and her daughters Pamela and Mona have broken their silence on Six Men’s Village, St Peter, which is now being occupied by more than 300 squatters. The family, who have been quietly fighting in the law courts for 21 years to have control of what is legally theirs, told THE NATION they had gathered enough evidence to show that corruption, theft and lies, surrounded the coveted Six Men’s land. The 84 year-old matriarch is convinced that several squatters, including non-nationals, who now occupy the 27 acres of prime beach front land, a portion of the wider 240 acres Six Men’s Plantation, were given permission to settle there by politicians. (SS)
POLICE INVESTIGATE SHOOTING IN ST. JAMES – Yesterday police responded to a shooting incident around 2:50 p.m. at Fox Club Gap, The Garden, St James. On arrival police discovered that Jamar Greaves, of Grape Hall, St Lucy had been shot in his right forearm and was taken to QEH by private transportation. Investigations are continuing. Anyone who can provide any information that can assist in these investigations is asked to contact Police Emergency at 211, Holetown police station at 419-1700, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477(TIPS) or any police station. (SS)
REIFER ‘READY’ TO COACH WINDIES – Floyd Reifer is in no way angry that he has been overlooked as a West Indies assistant coach for the upcoming series against England. In fact, the 46-year-old Barbadian, who had a taste of working with the regional side on recent tours of India and Bangladesh, is hopeful of landing the job as head coach later this year. Reifer served as batting coach for the Asian tours towards the end of 2018 – he was head coach for the last two T20s against Bangladesh – but with Richard Pybus taking over as interim head coach for the next few months, his services have not been retained. “It is unfortunate and disappointing but I am not bitter about it. I have no bitterness at all. I try to focus and improve myself as a coach and continue to work with all the young guys who need help,” he told THE NATION. (SS)
ODAINE AND BARKER SHINE – Keen to erase the disappointment of missing selection for last year’s CARIFTA Games, a determined Shemia Odaine got a useful warm-up for the new season with three commanding track and field victories at an Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB) Developmental Meet on Saturday. Racing and jumping on home turf at Lester Vaughan School, Shemia, watched by her dad, cricketer Kelso Odaine, was too hot to handle in the 60 and 150 metres open events after leaping 2.49 metres to take the standing broad jump. It was a solid start to the season for the 17-year-old Odaine, who was unlucky not to make the national team for the CARIFTA Games in The Bahamas. “I had a few niggles but I worked them out and I am happy with both sprints. I am looking forward to making the CARIFTA Games team. That is my goal this season,” she said. (SS)

On the banks of the Charente, as it meanders towards the Atlantic, the city of Saintes was once the Roman capital of Aquitaine.
Ancient Mediolanum Santonum’s ruins, like the amphitheater, arches, baths and countless fragments of sculpture and stonework, are all weathered but soul-stirring. Move forward in time and Saintes swayed through the historic province of Saintonge and was equipped with Romanesque Abbaye aux Dames and the Saint-Europe Pilgrimage Church. These monuments are made even more solemn and atmospheric by the Medieval and Renaissance music lines at the Festival de Saintes every July. There is also the easy fun of Charente and its riverside parks, or the delicious taste of Cognac distilled nearby. Discover the best things to do in Saintes.
[toc]
1. Amphitheatre Gallo-Romain
The finest of what’s left of ancient Mediolanum Santonum, Saintes’ Roman amphitheater dates to the Rule of Emperor Claudius in 40AD. In its time it could have seated up to 15,000 spectators, who would have crammed in to watch gladiator fights and battles with wild beasts.
The lowest sitting floor is still intact, like some arches, and you can easily create the texture of stone terraces and working paths on the surrounding hillsides.
2. Abbaye aux Dames
Founded by Earl Anjou in the 11th century and with many traces of its original architecture, Abbey aux Dames is a Benedictine Monastery for women from noble families. Eleanor of Aquitaine donated to the monastery, while Agnes of Burgundy retired here after Earl Anjou's death.
The abbey church is the oldest part, with Roman architecture in the 11th and 12th centuries, with an iconic pine cone bell tower.
3. Arch of Germanicus
Older than the amphitheater, this splendid archway is from the reign of Tiberius, around the Year 18.
Though superficially, it was actually a triumphal arch built to commemorate a battle, but instead was sponsored by a wealthy local citizen in honor of Emperor Tiberius, whose son was Drusus and his grandson and his adopted son Germanicus. This information has been deduced from the very faint inscriptions in the stone.
4. Saintes Cathedral
You can learn a lot about Saintes just by thinking about its church for a while. What will strike you immediately is the squatting appearance of its bell tower. This was covered with a bronze dome instead of a tower because the original was damaged during the French Religious War in the 16th century.
In the wake of the conflict there weren’t enough funds to restore the spire, so ever since the tower has stood at 58 meters instead of 96.
5. Musée Archéologique
When Saintes began excavating Roman sites in the 19th century, it unearthed incredible rock storage. These were eventually transferred into the city's old butchery city, on the right bank of Charente, a few steps from the Arch of Germanicus.
By order of the curator of the Saintes museum, the newly redesigned site looks like a Roman house with arches and arches. In the sculptures of all descriptions; funeral, decoration, and religion, along with reliefs, column fragments, and mosaic extract.
But the pinnacle was the headless statue sculpted from Carrara marble and believed to depict Drusus Caesar, the son of Germanicus.
6. Basilique Saint-Eutrope
An important stop on the St James pilgrimage road, this 11th-century church consists of a lower and upper church.
The lower church is the one that needs to be on your agenda: It’s a Romanesque wonder that houses the cenotaph of Saint Eutrope, at the center of a choir with the most expertly carved capitals.
This is located below the main church above so the church's normal activities can continue above while pilgrims can enter and pray at the tomb of Saint Eutrope, before continuing. Taking a minute to adjust your lighting and subterranean space will reveal its secrets.
7. Jardin Public
Down from the Arch of Germanicus on the right bank of Charente, Jardin Public is three hectares of land and gardens, woven with a network of roads. For children, there’s a playground and a little menagerie with goats and ducks.
And perhaps the nicest spot for a wander in the alley next to the Charente where you can see the river traffic, boats moored on the wooden pontoons and can look across to the cathedral. There is also a lovely old orange in the park that has been converted into a de-salted salon.
8. Logis du Gouverneur Belvedere
This land is located on a road above the old town currently being renovated, but it is still worth looking forward to looking around. First, you have the Logis de Godarneur, a handsome 17th-century castle, the last relic of the 17th-century citadel of Saintes.
But maybe even better is the scenery that you can walk through the city from the cliff path. What will show you about the landscape is the sea of terracotta roof tiles, reminding you that you are going to the south of France in Saintes.
9. Charente Cruises
In the 16th century, King Francis I declared Charente the most beautiful river in the kingdom, and in Saintes, there were many opportunities to find out if he was right.
For those who want to sit back and watch the blue shores washed down by ships like Bernard Palissy II and La Gabare, have moored at the jetty in Saintes and provided yachts on this wide and winding river throughout. day.

Original Post from Amazon Security Author: Supriya Anand
Byron Cook leads the AWS Automated Reasoning Group, which automates proof search in mathematical logic and builds tools that provide AWS customers with provable security. Byron has pushed boundaries in this field, delivered real-world applications in the cloud, and fostered a sense of community amongst its practitioners. In recognition of Byron’s contributions to cloud security and automated reasoning, the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering elected him as one of 7 new Fellows in computing this year.
I recently sat down with Byron to discuss his new Fellowship, the work that it celebrates, and how he and his team continue to use automated reasoning in new ways to provide higher security assurance for customers in the AWS cloud.
Congratulations, Byron! Can you tell us a little bit about the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the significance of being a Fellow?
Thank you. I feel very honored! The Royal Academy of Engineering is focused on engineering in the broad sense; for example, aeronautical, biomedical, materials, etc. I’m one of only 7 Fellows elected this year that specialize in computing or logic, making the announcement really unique.
As for what the Royal Academy of Engineering is: the UK has Royal Academies for key disciplines such as music, drama, etc. The Royal Academies focus financial support and recognition on these fields, and gives a location and common meeting place. The Royal Academy of Music, for example, is near Regent’s Park in West London. The Royal Academy of Engineering’s building is in Carlton Place, one of the most exclusive locations in central London near Pall Mall and St. James’ Park. I’ve been to a number of lectures and events in that space. For example, it’s where I spoke ten years ago when I was the recipient of the Roger Needham prize. Some examples of previously elected Fellows include Sir Frank Whittle, who invented the jet engine; radar pioneer Sir George MacFarlane, and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who developed the world-wide web.
Can you tell us a little bit about why you were selected for the award?
The letter I received from the Royal Academy says it better than I could say myself:
“Byron Cook is a world-renowned leader in the field of formal verification. For over 20 years Byron has worked to bring this field from academic hypothesis to mechanised industrial reality. Byron has made major research contributions, built influential tools, led teams that operationalised formal verification activities, and helped establish connections between others that have dramatically accelerated growth of the area. Byron’s tools have been applied to a wide array of topics, e.g. biological systems, computer operating systems, programming languages, and security. Byron’s Automated Reasoning Group at Amazon is leading the field to even greater success”.
Formal verification is the one term here that may be foreign to you, so perhaps I should explain. Formal verification is the use of mathematical logic to prove properties of systems. Euclid, for example, used formal verification in ~300 BC to prove that the Pythagorean theorem holds for all possible right-angled triangles. Today we are using formal verification to prove things about all possible configurations of a computer program might reach. When I founded Amazon’s Automated Reasoning Group, I named it that because my ambition was to automate all of the reasoning performed during formal verification.
Can you give us a bit of detail about some of the “research contributions and tools” mentioned in the text from Royal Academy of Engineering?
Probably my best-known work before joining Amazon was on the Terminator tool. Terminator was designed to reason at compile-time about what a given computer program would eventually do when running in production. For example, “Will the program eventually halt?” This is the famous “Halting problem,” proved undecidable in the 1930s. The Terminator tool piloted a new approach to the problem which is popular now, based on the idea of incrementally improving the best guess for a proof based on failed proof attempts. This was the first known approach capable of scaling termination proving to industrial problems. My colleagues and I used Terminator to find bugs in device drivers that could cause operating systems to become unresponsive. We found many bugs in device drivers that ran keyboards, mice, network devices, and video cards. The Terminator tool was also the basis of BioModelAnaylzer. It turns out that there’s a connection between diseases like Leukemia and the Halting problem: Leukemia is a termination bug in the genetic-regulatory pathways in your blood. You can think of it in the same way you think of a device driver that’s stuck in an infinite loop, causing your computer to freeze. My tools helped answer fundamental questions that no tool could solve before. Several pharmaceutical companies use BioModelAnaylzer today to understand disease and find new treatment options. And these days, there is an annual international competition with many termination provers that are much better than the Terminator. I think that this is what Royal Academy is talking about when they say I moved the area from “academic hypothesis to mechanized industrial reality.”
I have also worked on problems related to the question of P=NP, the most famous open problem in computing theory. From 2000-2006, I built tools that made NP feel equal to P in certain limited circumstances to try and understand the problem better. Then I focused on circumstances that aligned with important industrial problems, like proving the absence of bugs in microprocessors, flight control software, telecommunications systems, and railway control systems. These days the tools in this space are incredibly powerful. You should check out the software tools CVC4 or Z3.
And, of course, there’s my work with the Automated Reasoning Group, where I’ve built a team of domain experts that develop and apply formal verification tools to a wide variety of problems, helping make the cloud more secure. We have built tools that automatically reason about the semantics of policies, networks, cryptography, virtualization, etc. We reason about the implementation of Amazon Web Services (AWS) itself, and we’ve built tools that help customers prove the correctness of their AWS-based implementations.
Could you go into a bit more detail about how this work connects to Amazon and its customers?
AWS provides cloud services globally. Cloud is shorthand for on-demand access to IT resources such as compute, storage, and analytics via the Internet with pay-as-you-go pricing. AWS has a wide variety of customers, ranging from individuals to the largest enterprises, and practically all industries. My group develops mathematical proof tools that help make AWS more secure, and helps AWS customers understand how to build in the cloud more securely.
I first became an AWS customer myself when building BioModelAnaylzer. AWS allowed us working on this project to solve major scientific challenges (see this Nature Scientific Report for an example) using very large datacenters, but without having to buy the machines, maintain the machines, maintain the rooms that the machines would sit in, the A/C system that would keep them cool, etc. I was also able to easily provide our customers with access to the tool via the cloud, because it’s all over the internet. I just pointed people to the end-point on the internet and, presto, they were using the tool. About 5 years before developing BioModelAnalyzer, I was developing proof tools for device drivers and I gave a demo of the tool to my executive leadership. At the end of the demo, I was asked if 5,000 machines would help us do more proofs. Computationally, the answer was an obvious “yes,” but then I thought a minute about the amount of overhead required to manage a fleet of 5,000 machines and reluctantly replied “No, but thank you very much for the offer!” With AWS, it’s not even a question. Anyone with an Amazon account can provision 5,000 machines for practically nothing. In less than 5 minutes, you can be up and running and computing with thousands of machines.
What I love about working at AWS is that I can focus a very small team on proving the correctness of some aspect of AWS (for example, the cryptography) and, because of the size and importance of the customer base, we make much of the world meaningfully more secure. Just to name a few examples: s2n (the Amazon TLS implementation); the AWS Key Management Service (KMS), which allows customers to securely store crypto keys; and networking extensions to the IoT operating system Amazon FreeRTOS, which customers use to link cloud to IoT devices, such as robots in factories. We also focus on delivering service features that help customers prove the correctness of their AWS-based implementations. One example is Tiros, which powers a network reachability feature in Amazon Inspector. Another example is Zelkova, which powers features in services such as Amazon S3, AWS Config, and AWS IoT Device Defender.
When I think of mathematical logic I think of obscure theory and messy blackboards, not practical application. But it sounds like you’ve managed to balance the tension between theory and practical industrial problems?
I think that this is a common theme that great scientists don’t often talk about. Alan Turing, for example, did his best work during the war. John Snow, who made fundamental contributions to our understanding of germs and epidemics, did his greatest work while trying to figure out why people were dying in the streets of London. Christopher Stratchey, one of the founders of our field, wrote:
“It has long been my personal view that the separation of practical and theoretical work is artificial and injurious. Much of the practical work done in computing, both in software and in hardware design, is unsound and clumsy because the people who do it have not any clear understanding of the fundamental design principles in their work. Most of the abstract mathematical and theoretical work is sterile because it has no point of contact with real computing.”
Throughout my career, I’ve been at the intersection of practical and theoretical. In the early days, this was driven by necessity: I had two children during my PhD and, frankly, I needed the money. But I soon realized that my deep connection to real engineering problems was an advantage and not a disadvantage, and I’ve tried through the rest of my career to stay in that hot spot of commercially applicable problems while tackling abstract mathematical topics.
What’s next for you? For the Automated Reasoning Group? For your scientific field?
The Royal Academy of Engineering kindly said that I’ve brought “this field from academic hypothesis to mechanized industrial reality.” That’s perhaps true, but we are very far from done: it’s not yet an industrial standard. The full power of automated reasoning is not yet available to everyone because today’s tools are either difficult to use or weak. The engineering challenge is to make them both powerful and easy to use. With that I believe that they’ll become a key part of every software engineer’s daily routine. What excites me is that I believe that Amazon has a lot to teach me about how to operationalize the impossible. That’s what Amazon has done over and over again. That’s why I’m at Amazon today. I want to see these proof techniques operating automatically at Amazon scale.

Squatters in Bristol shipping containers resisting eviction
Squatters who are living on a famous Bristol landmark are resisting attempts to evict them.
They have called on Bristol City Council to work with them rather than trying to get them ejected from the Bearpit roundabout.
For the past three weeks, a group of up to 30 people have been living in shipping containers and a double decker bus which used to be independent cafes.
A man who says he is two days clean from heroin rises in his green sleeping bag on a wooden porch where people sleep at a squatters camp inside St James Barton roundabout, locally known as ‘The Bearpit’ in Bristol’s city centre
A banner reading ‘Never mind the law squat and resist’ is tied onto a porch area, where people sleep, at the squatters camp
The traveller and homeless squat claims it is helping people in the city support drug abstinence and give a safe space to vulnerable members of the community
Some of the squatters are homeless and some are squatting as a protest against council plans to take back control of the Bearpit and begin plans to refurbish the area.
Bristol City Council has begun eviction proceedings in the civil courts because it wants to turn the Bearpit into a food innovation hub, with space to accommodate up to 40 businesses and create 160 jobs.
The Bearpit saga dates back several years when the space inside the St James Barton roundabout was opened to encourage greater community use.
James Barton roundabout in Bristol’s city centre, locally known as ‘The Bearpit’, has become the site of a stand-off between squatters and the local authority
An old double-decker bus, left by a community interest company, is being used by squatters as a kitchen to make meals
Lisa, affectionately known as ‘mum’ of the group, said: ‘The public have been really, really good to us, they smile on the way past’. Right: a squatter known as ‘Slovakian Rich’
A man known as Midnite plays music as he DJ’s using a phone, amp and speakers at the squatters camp in the Bearpit
One of the squatters, known as ‘Midnite’, said the Bearpit should be a space for the whole of the community.
‘Get events on, get the markets that used to run here open and stop them gentrifying the place because we don’t need any more coffee shops, we need community space,’ he said.
He described the council’s attempts at evicting them as ‘ridiculous’.
‘Since we have been here at the Bearpit, the anti-social behaviour has gone down and it is becoming a safer place for people to walk through,’ Midnite said.
‘We are not doing this as a place for us, we are doing it for them and the future generations.
‘Stop the legal action and allow us to continue our work. We are doing things here on a shoestring budget with help and donations from members of the public.’
Another of the protesters, known as Lisa, said: ‘I’m at the Bearpit to make sure it is there for everybody, not just one class of people.
People pass by a traveller and homeless squat, protected by barriers, inside St James Barton roundabout, locally known as ‘The Bearpit’, in Bristol’s city centre
A man known as Johnny the Hungarian Chef prepares a meal of rice and beans for homeless people inside the bus
Known as the ‘mum’ of the group, Lisa tidies away broken pieces of wood at the squatters camp inside the Bearpit
A man known as Jesus, originally from Cork, Ireland, sits in his shipping container home in the communal storage section of the camp
‘The public have been really, really good to us, they smile on the way past, they ask questions about what we’re doing and what we need.
‘I think it is absolutely disgusting what the council is trying to do. The main reason I think that is they are going to make more people homeless and they have put nothing in place to house anybody here.
‘I understand there have been a few issues because it is a squat and there is always red tape and health and safety, but if they work alongside us we can fix that.
‘In my mind, I think we’ll win.’

Bristol City Council said incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour have increased since the group moved in.
‘We’re aware of a number of people squatting in council-owned structures in the Bearpit and have concerns about their health and safety as these structures are unsuitable for people to live in,’ a council spokeswoman said.
‘We recommend that anyone squatting there who is homeless or at risk of homelessness to talk to the outreach workers visiting the site regularly.
‘We also have concerns about the further increase in anti-social behaviour and crimes being reported in the area over the past few weeks.
‘We’re monitoring the situation closely with Avon and Somerset Police and will be in regular discussion with officers about the safety of all in the space.
‘We are responding to calls from the wider community to improve the area of the Bearpit so that everyone can feel safe in the space.
‘To achieve this we will need to clear some of the items, however this work is currently on hold while we work with The People’s Republic of Stokes Croft and squatters.’
