August 18 is the Memorial of St. Ezekiel Moreno (1848-1906). Ezekiel was an Augustinian Recollect known for his simple and open spirit. He was deeply devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He ministered for many years in foreign lands. He stongly defended the rights of the Church.
Born in Alfaro (La Rioja, Spain) on April 9, 1849, he professed his vows in the Order of Augustinian Recollects in Monteagudo (Navarra) in 1865. He was ordained priest in Manila in 1871 and worked for 15 years in the Philippines. Ezekiel was elected prior of the monastery of Monteagudo in 1885; he left for Colombia in 1888 where he restored the Augustinian Recollect Order and reactivated the old mission. Named Apostolic Vicar of Casanare (1893) and Bishop of Pasto (1896), he was a model pastor for his fidelity to the Church and for his apostolic zeal. He fell ill and in 1906, returned to Spain, where he died of cancer on August 19 of the same year in the monastery of Monteagudo. Innumerable cures, especially of cancer, are attributed to his intercession.

When the Church believes she has her own light; she ceases to be the ‘mystery lunae.’ It is like a Church without Christ. She lives to give glory only to itself. (at St. Ezekiel Moreno Spirituality & Development Center)

San Sebastian Church
The Basilica Menor de San Sebastian in Quiapo
Pasaje del Carmen St, Quiapo, Manila, Metro Manila.
Contact number: 734-8908
One of the historical churches in Manila that exudes great beauty and architecture is located in Quiapo, Manila. The light blue-green basilica that stands in the busy end of Claro M. Recto Street doesn’t entirely give off an ancient feel, however its color emphasizes its striking features – two open towers with pyramidal spires, louvered windows and an intricately designed rose window, which indicate a particular uniqueness of the church’s architectural background.
Constructed in 1890, inaugurated and blessed the following year, San Sebastian Church is a Roman Catholic minor basilica in Manila which represents true Gothic revival architecture. It is recognized as the only all-steel church in the Philippines, and some say in Asia.
The restoration of San Sebastian Basilica is a focus of Bakas Pilipinas’ fundraising efforts. Inaugurated in 1891, the church is the only all-metal building in the Philippines. After the first three churches at the site were destroyed by earthquakes, the colonial insular government of Spain decided to build the church in steel, in lieu of traditional brick and stone to better withstand future tremors.
With the exception of its exterior paint finish, the structure has remained true to its original design. Today, the church exhibits deterioration from corrosion due to water leaks, causing damage to the metal plates and interior murals.
San Sebastian Basilica is one of the Philippines’ historical and artistic treasures, a showcase of the works of turn of the century Filipino artists. It is significant as well for its unique construction technology. This type of all metal structure, generically referred to as an “Eiffel” structure – after Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower in Paris – was typically fabricated in France, Belgium and Germany and shipped for assembly in Spanish colonies throughout South and Central America. There are strong links to Gustave Eiffel as designer, but this is still subject to confirmation. Eiffel’s work includes several steel structures built in the Philippines and there is a reference to a “steel church” in Eiffel’s archives.
San Sebastian Basilica was designated as a National Historic Landmark by the Philippine National Historical Commission and is listed in the 2010 Watch List by the World Monuments Fund.
The Basilica is the result of collaborative design and construction work in the 19th century by the Filipinos, Spanish, French, Belgians and Germans. Please help suport the restoration of this irreplaceable world treasure.
In 1621, a generous patron and devotee of the Christian martyr St. Sebastian, was Don Bernardino Castillo. He donated the land which is the current site of San Sebastian Church for the construction of a church. The original church that was built was made of wood but was burned during a Chinese uprising in 1651. The next structures were made of bricks, but were destroyed by fire and earthquakes.
 Vision-Mission of the Parish
We want San Sebastian College-Recoletos Manila to be a leading dynamic Catholic Christian educational institution whose graduates are intellectually and globally competitive individuals imbued with Augustinian Recollect values.
We commit to provide quality Catholic Christian education for the holistic formation of every person to become socially responsible, morally upright, academically and technologically competent leaders and professionals ready to meet the needs and demands of the local and global communities.
 Activities/Programs
The San Sebastian Lectors and Commentators Group was organized by then Father Nicolas Salvatierra, OAR, followed by Father Hermenegildo Cerniza, OAR in the year 1991.
The main objective of Lectors and Commentators is to render meaningful readings for each Eucharistic celebration and involve the faithful by leading them to respond while participating during Holy Mass. In this Ministry, the members strive to grow in holiness through prayer and meditation on the Word of God. Year round, they are encouraged to participate in various activities that will enliven their spiritual needs.
Other spiritual activities of the guild are: Hour HOur in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus every First Friday of the month and weekly novenas to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. They are the ones directly responsible for planning the liturgical celebrations on special occasions as feast days of Mt. Carmel, St. Augustine, St. Ezekiel Moreno and St. Sebastian, also Christmas and Holy Week.
 Reflection
For me, the mission of the church is for every Filipino to know what is morally right. It is not only for us but also for the sake of our country. They want us to be a great leader for the development of our country. Every Filipino must know the real essence of the church. Because it showcases what is good, right, or in short it makes us a better person.
