This female leopard is special since she has cataract on her left hand eye. As far as I know she didn't had this condition just over a year ago and with her behavior it did not seem the condition of the eye has affected her life a lot. Hopefully she will continue strong and the authorities will take action to cure her if possible. . Sri Lanka: Wildlife Photo Tour

As you all know, we organize wildlife tours specializing in Sri Lanka for photographic and non-photographic travelers. Whilst we take our guests to popular sites, we also take them to non-popular, non-traditional venues to give them a good taste of what’s on offer here in Sri Lanka. Our understanding of venues, local culture, local communities and above all the flora and fauna are what differentiates us from the rest. We take a client-centric approach to our service delivery. Further, we believe in sustainable tourism and conserving wildlife for our future generations.  

We are posting here some of the pictures from such locations that we recently visited. They are in an around the wet zone and the dry part of the wet zone. These are rich grounds to locate birds, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies. 

Pictured in the second picture (from the top) is a colony of  Baya Weavers (Ploceus Philippinus). These birds have picked up this coconut tree as their preferred location. The local communities here believe that these birds build their next closer to ground when a dry spell of weather is around the corner and build the nest at higher elevation (like in this picture) as the rainy season is arriving. This water stream is a rich ground for locating some endemic Sri Lankan dragonflies and damselflies.

In Sri Lanka we commemorate Children's day on October 1st. So, here are the two latest additions to the Wilpattu leopard family. The "Ranawara pitiya cubs" --------- Ranawara (Senna auriculata) or Tanner's cassia. It is a shrub type with a bright yellow flower. Pitiya is the Sinhalese word meaning "grounds" In Wilpattu there is a area where these shrubs are plentiful and that is where these two cubs usually reside. Lazy boy 3000 Similar to us having our favorite couch, leopards too have their preffered branches to sit on. The height from the ground, ease of climbing up and down, the surface area to sit and the comfortness of the surface of the branch may factor into their decision. As safari guides if we know that a leopard frequents a certain branch, we can check that particular branch when we are passing through the area and hopefuly we can get a sighting. . . . There is a female leopard called the broken-eared female in Wilpattu National Park. This is one of her cubs. There was some light rain before this sighting and there was some rain even when we had the sighting, but the cub did not mind the rain at all. Instead it seemed to enjoy the experience. We got very lucky when it was interested in our windshield wipers. . . . It's amazing how well leopards are camouflaged even on open grasslands. This female was walking behind the grass and some of my guests had a difficult time spotting it. I always say look for movement. Even I would probably miss it if it was laying still on the ground. Leopards have to keep a low profile, since when prey animals notice them it makes hunting even more difficult than it already is, but it is wonderful how their coat keeps helps them concealed in the open grasslands as well as the forest undergrowth. . . .
