Top Tips for Choosing the Best Sports Bar in Brisbane
Tumblr media
Sports bars offer a unique blend of entertainment, camaraderie, and local culture, making them a popular choice for both residents and visitors in Brisbane. Whether you're a die-hard sports fan or just looking for a fun night out, finding the right sports bar can enhance your viewing experience. This guide provides essential tips to help you choose the best sports bar in Brisbane, ensuring an unforgettable experience.
Understanding Brisbane's Sports Bar Scene
Brisbane's sports bar scene is as diverse as the city itself, offering a range of options from upscale establishments to casual hangouts. The city hosts a vibrant sports culture, celebrating everything from cricket and rugby to soccer and AFL. Knowing the variety of sports events covered and the type of crowd each bar attracts can help you find your perfect match.
Location Matters
Location is crucial when choosing a sports bar. Central Brisbane boasts a lively atmosphere with bars close to public transport and major attractions, while suburban venues offer a more relaxed setting. Consider the convenience of getting to and from the venue, especially on game nights.
Screen Size and Quality
The best sports bars invest in high-definition screens and state-of-the-art sound systems to deliver an immersive viewing experience. Look for bars with large screens visible from every angle and additional projectors for major sporting events.
Variety of Sports Coverage
A top sports bar should offer comprehensive coverage of both international and local sports, ensuring you never miss a match. Whether you're into the Premier League, NRL, or NBA, the bar should cater to a wide range of sports enthusiasts.
Atmosphere and Ambience
The atmosphere can make or break your sports bar experience. Some bars offer a family-friendly environment, while others cater to an adult audience with theme nights and live music. Choose a bar that aligns with your preferences for an enjoyable evening.
Food and Drink Options
Good food and a wide selection of drinks are essential for any sports bar. From classic pub grub to gourmet offerings, the menu should cater to all tastes. Look for bars with drink specials and craft beer selections to enhance your experience.
Seating and Viewing Areas
Comfortable seating and well-designed viewing areas are key for enjoying long games. Opt for bars with spacious layouts, private booths, or VIP sections for a more exclusive experience.
Customer Service
Efficient and friendly service is crucial, especially during busy game nights. Staff should be knowledgeable about the sports being shown and attentive to your needs throughout the event.
Community and Fan Base
Joining a community of fellow sports fans can greatly enhance your experience. Look for bars that host fan club meetings or special events to connect with like-minded individuals.
Promotions and Specials
Take advantage of promotions and specials, such as happy hours and game day discounts. These offers can provide great value and add to the overall enjoyment of your visit.
Technology and Connectivity
In today's digital age, having access to Wi-Fi and betting facilities can be a plus. These features allow you to stay connected and place live bets during the game.
Safety and Cleanliness
Cleanliness and safety measures, particularly in light of COVID-19, are non-negotiable. Choose bars that adhere to health guidelines to ensure a safe environment for everyone.
Reviews and Recommendations
Online reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations can provide valuable insights into a bar's atmosphere, service, and overall experience. Research before making your decision.
Unique Features and Facilities
Some sports bars offer unique features, such as sports memorabilia displays or interactive games, adding to the venue's appeal. These elements can significantly enhance your visit.
Family and Group Friendliness
If you're planning to visit with family or a group, look for bars that accommodate children and offer group booking options. This ensures a comfortable experience for everyone involved.
Loyalty Programs and Memberships
Loyalty programs and memberships can offer perks such as discounts, priority bookings, and exclusive access to events. Consider these benefits when choosing a sports bar.
Conclusion
Choosing the best sports bar in Brisbane requires considering several factors, from location and sports coverage to food, drink, and atmosphere. By following these tips, you're sure to find a venue that offers the perfect blend of entertainment, comfort, and community. Whether you're cheering for your favorite team or enjoying a night out with friends, the right sports bar can make all the difference.

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

[ad_1] Rohit Sharma and Australia after winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the SCG (PC: Debasis Sen and Cricket Australia) Subhayan Chakraborty in Australia Australia won the series against India 3-1, thereby reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after almost a decade. It was a series of hardcore cricket where Australia, for most of the rubber, dominated play. Despite winning the first Test in Perth, the Indians let the intensity fade, allowing one of the most dominant teams to make a stellar comeback. It wasn’t an easy tour for the Indian team by any means. The performances were not consistently up to par. The seniors let the team down on almost all occasions, barring a few patches of brilliance on the gruelling tour, which lasted over 40 days. Jasprit Bumrah produced one of the most eye-catching performances, securing 32 wickets at an average of 13, earning the Player of the Series award despite being on the losing side. Meanwhile, the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Test cricket has now come into serious jeopardy. Ravichandran Ashwin, one of the modern-day greats, announced his retirement mid-series in Brisbane. KL Rahul’s initial promise faded after a strong start, while Shubman Gill failed to deliver as expected, raising questions about how long a rope he will be given to perform, especially in South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand. The Australian tour is for the tough; when things don’t go in your favor, any cracks can widen rapidly. That’s what happened in the Indian dressing room. Indian captain Rohit was dropped for the last Test in Sydney, and Gautam Gambhir’s credentials as Test coach have come under intense scrutiny. Tactical blunders were highlighted, and some players’ form became major talking points during the series. India was already under pressure after being clean-swept by New Zealand at home for the first time ever. The Perth win might have brought some smiles and hopes of a turnaround, but that now seems like a false glimmer of hope. There were some positives, though: Yashasvi Jaiswal’s returns with the bat, Nitish Kumar Reddy’s emergence as a handy batting all-rounder, although he needs to significantly improve his bowling, and Bumrah’s exceptional performances. But they were far too few. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Virat Kohli with Webster at the SCG (PC: Debasis Sen) Let’s start with Perth. India were bundled out for 150 in the first innings, but a combined effort from Bumrah (five wickets), Mohammed Siraj (two wickets), and debutant Harshit Rana (three wickets) ensured Australia folded up for 104. Under 38 degrees Celsius, the Indian openers, Rahul and Jaiswal, wore down the Aussie attack with a 201-run opening stand; Jaiswal scored 161 and Rahul 77. Kohli entertained with an unbeaten 100, and Bumrah and Siraj dismantled the Aussie lineup to help India win the opener by 295 runs. It seemed like the Indian team would go for the kill and complete a hat-trick of BGT wins, but the pink-ball Test awaited in Adelaide. Under lights, with the shiny pink ball, Mitchell Starc demolished the Indian batting unit, taking six wickets. Nitish was the only positive with a counter-attacking 42-run knock. India were bundled out for 180. In response, Australia scored 337, thanks to Travis Head’s run-a-ball 140 and Marnus Labuschagne’s 64. Though Bumrah was on fire again, picking up four wickets, the other pacers leaked runs. Cummins took charge with the ball in the second innings, taking five wickets as India were bundled out for 175, with Australia needing just 19 runs to finish the job in 3.2 overs. The third Test at the Gabba was drawn due to rain but it revealed that the Indian bowling unit was quite ordinary without Bumrah. He took a six-for, but Steve Smith and Head’s 101 and 152, respectively, helped Australia post 445. India managed 260, with Rahul scoring 84 and Ravindra Jadeja 77. In both Adelaide and Brisbane, Rohit’s decision to bat at number six failed. The Gabba Test ended in handshakes and the significant announcement of Ashwin retiring and heading back home.
Then came the Boxing Day Test at the ‘G. India had not lost at this iconic venue in their last three visits, so there was some confidence for a comeback. However, Australia introduced Sam Konstas to the international scene, who scored 60 off 65. Usman Khawaja and Labuschagne scored half-centuries, while Smith hit another ton. Bumrah was again the sole fighter with the ball, securing another four-for, but the Indian batting unit seemed to surrender until Nitish’s fabulous 114 and Sundar’s gritty 50 rescued them from embarrassment. Labuschagne scored another 70, but with Australia at 91-6, India might have felt victory was within reach until the Aussie tail wagged. Webster after hitting the winning shot at the SCG (PC: Debasis Sen) Cummins led from the front with a knock of 41, Nathan Lyon compiled 41, and Scott Boland scored 15, which formed a part of a last-wicket partnership of 61, as Australia finished with 234. The Indian batting unit collapsed again; Jaiswal scored 84 but found no support, leading to Sunil Gavaskar’s critique from the commentary box about Rishabh Pant’s dismissal, which effectively ended India’s chances. Australia won the Boxing Day Test by 184 runs, taking a 2-1 lead. In Sydney, fans hoped that the typical slow SCG pitch would aid India, but the curator prepared a green mamba, yet India played two spinners. Rohit ‘opted out’ due to poor form, and India were dismissed for 185. However, the Indian pace trio of Bumrah, Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna put up a show, getting Australia out for 181. There were hopes, but also concerns as Bumrah left for scans. The Indian batting surrendered meekly, and if not for Pant’s whirlwind 61 off 33, they would have faced complete humiliation. With just 162 to chase for Australia, India were without Bumrah in the second innings. Siraj and Krishna leaked too many extras and boundaries, making the chase straightforward for Australia. Head and Beau Webster finished the game in the second session of Day 3, clinching the series, something that Australia had chased for a decade. Sunil Gavaskar was notably absent from the trophy presentation, where Allan Border handed over the trophy to Cummins and his team. The Indian team left the dressing room with heads down in disappointment, while the Aussies celebrated with their families into the late evening. It was a series of blood, sweat, and tears. Australia were clinical, while India, not so much.
Ben Duckett
Ben Duckett is an English cricketer known for his aggressive batting style and versatility as a wicketkeeper-batsman. Born on October 17, 1994, in Farnborough, Kent, he has made significant strides in his cricketing career since debuting internationally in 2013.
Early Career
Duckett's cricketing journey began at a young age when he joined the Northamptonshire Cricket Academy at just 11 years old. He made his first-class debut for Northamptonshire while still completing his A Levels at Stowe School. His early performances included impressive scores in the County Championship, where he quickly established himself as a promising talent.
International Debut and Performance
Duckett made his international debut in Test cricket against Bangladesh on October 20, 2013. He later played his first One Day International (ODI) on October 7, 2016, and his T20 International debut followed on May 5, 2019, against Pakistan. Known for his ability to play spin effectively and score rapidly, Duckett has often been praised for his stroke-making abilities.
Domestic Success
In domestic cricket, Duckett has played for various teams, including Nottinghamshire, Brisbane Heat, and Islamabad United. His notable performances include scoring a double century for Nottinghamshire in the Marylebone Cricket Club University Matches and leading his team to victory in the T20 Blast final. In the 2022 County Championship, he scored over 1,000 runs at an impressive average of 72.28, further solidifying his reputation as a top performer.
Controversies
Despite his talent, Duckett's career has not been without controversy. In 2017, during the Ashes tour in Australia, he was involved in an incident where he threw beer at England bowler James Anderson in a bar, resulting in a fine and suspension from the tour. Such incidents have occasionally overshadowed his cricketing achievements.
Recent Developments
As of late 2023, Duckett continues to be an integral part of the English cricket setup. His performances have earned him recognition and respect within the sport. In November 2023, he was rewarded with a two-year central contract from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), reflecting his importance to the national team.
Conclusion
Ben Duckett's journey through cricket showcases both his immense talent and the challenges that come with being a professional athlete. With continued dedication and focus on improving his game, Duckett is poised to make significant contributions to English cricket in the years to come. His blend of aggressive batting and wicketkeeping skills makes him a valuable asset for any team he represents.

Meet the man behind Brisbane's new queer bar Come to Daddy
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/meet-the-man-behind-brisbanes-new-queer-bar-come-to-daddy/
Meet the man behind Brisbane's new queer bar Come to Daddy
Tumblr media
Billerwell Daye the owner of the new queer bar Come to Daddy, spoke to QNews about the new venture on Brisbane’s southside.
When walking into Brisbane’s new LGBTQIA+ venue, you’re greeted with a large neon “Daddy” sign above the door. There’s no mistaking which bar you’re at.
Welcoming me at the front counter for our chat was Billerwell, the owner. He was wearing a black polo shirt and large black glasses while sporting a long beard with his arms covered in tatts.
He isn’t the stereotypical “scene queen”, so I wanted to know why he decided to get into the business of opening up a queer bar.
“Oh, it started a long time ago, started when I had my old bar John Mills Himself in the city,” he tells me.
“So in the process of kind of winding that one down and doing another one, I basically wanted to feel comfortable behind the bar. It just meant that I could be at home and ease here, being an older man in a young hospitality kind of world.”
Finding the right place on Montague Road in West End took him around 18 months, with his main focus being the south side of Brisbane.
“We were predominantly looking around West End as there’s a bit of a hole on this side of the river. This just had the right vibe and there wasn’t really much over this side catering for the community,” he says.
How queer is the venue?
Despite having a name like Come to Daddy it’s always good for the LGBTQIA+ community to know it’s a safe space for them, so I ask how he would describe the venue.
“It’s an inclusive space, so I would say it is a queer venue but it’s not exclusively queer. We want the local community to be here. Whether they are a part of the rainbow family or not but it is for the queer community,” he explains.
“Being a gay man as well I wanted to feel comfortable and have somewhere for my friends to go because I have a lot of friends that were kind of discussing ‘Oh, I wish we had something else in Brisbane.’”
The venue has got off to a great start with weekends particularly busy with drag nights and DJ sets. Throughout the week there is also live music, karaoke and a kitchen open at all times.

Fabulous branding
The set-up works well for entertainment with a great view from every spot inside the bar. The stage itself has a backdrop of a fabulous stained glass window of the Come to Daddy branding.
I ask where the branding came from and he tells me a French illustrator friend created it a few years ago and he took inspiration from it.
Although not his design, Billerwell himself created the stained glass window after completing a course and making it over four months under his house. An impressive feat!
Punters can also purchase merchandise from the bar with the illustration.

Future hopes
I finished our chat by asking what he hopes in both the long and short term for the venue.
“Long term want to be here for as long as I possibly can. Short term, just to be embraced by the community as we have been so far and able to host great nights and be a social club and safe space for the community.”

Straight Draw
I didn’t inherit my father’s love of horse races.  I saw Dad lose more than win.  I valued the money I earnt too much to squander it so.  In fact, Dad’s addiction, that was how I saw it, really irritated me as a child.  He commandeered the radio every Friday night to hear which horses were listed to run that Saturday.  Consequently, I missed sequential episodes of my radio stories.  Then all day Saturday, he listened to the races ran in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.  At the time, I found the race caller’s constant chatter annoying.  Later as an adult, I realised my father looked forward to little else in his modest life.  He worked hard labour in the heat, cold and dirt day in and day out.  He earnt his time listening to the radio whilst sitting in a cool spot on the veranda.
Later Saturday evening, whilst I worked, I overheard Dad’s conversations with his mates whilst they chugged beers in Mattie’s bar.  They analysed horses’ forms, their wins and losses, the qualities of the various race courses and the bookmakers’ odds.  Some horses ran well on dry tracks and others on wet.  Consequently, I knew everything there was to know about the sport.
When the Melbourne Cup Race approached annually, energetic discussions and an infectious air of excited anticipation invaded the bar.  The men spoke of little else in the six week leadup.  Twenty-four horses would line up for the most famous race in Australia and run three thousand two hundred metres, about two miles back then.  Not only would the men lay bets with the local but illegal starting price (called an ‘SP’) bookmaker on the day, they bought tickets in sweeps, which popped up at businesses around the community.  It seemed the only establishment not running a sweep was the church!  A sweep was akin to a blind lucky dip.  Lots of tickets were sold but only tickets were drawn for the number of horses in the race.  The remaining tickets lost out.
The Station Master at Bethania Railway Station organised the biggest sweep around.  He sold tickets for weeks ahead at two shillings each to anybody willing to cough up such an extravagant amount.  By comparison, two bob usually bought you five tickets in a raffle.  Nevertheless, all the local Railway men bought at least five tickets if not ten.
In 1957, this race fever caught me in its grip too.  I was fourteen and wanted to join in the men’s excitement.  I deliberated for several days if I should purchase one two shilling ticket.  I only earnt three shillings for my Saturday morning shift at the refreshment rooms.  Besides, my odds were extremely poor; one ticket versus the hundreds sold to score a horse then one horse against twenty-four to win one of the three places.  Foolishly, I did buy one ticket, just one.  I told nobody about my gamble and hid the ticket in my money tin.
The day before the Melbourne Cup, the Station Master drew the twenty-four horse names from all the tickets he had sold in front of a crowd of ticket holders.  I wasn’t present but my father was of course.  Dad arrived home miserable.  He grumbled he had lucked out again and hadn’t secured a horse in the draw.
He then said, with a quizzical look on his face, ‘Jakob, you drew a horse though.  It’s Straight Draw.  However, the odds of it winning aren’t good.  Sorry lad.’
I felt down too.  I had wasted two precious shillings.  That was a lesson to myself.  Nevertheless, I had a horse to cheer on tomorrow.
The next day, I thought of little else.  The race was scheduled to be run twenty minutes before school finished.  The school had no radio so the students couldn’t listen to it.  The school teacher wouldn’t have allowed this anyway.  Alas, news of which horses had placed in the Cup travelled quickly.  As I walked my bicycle to the school’s front gate, I heard somebody yell that Straight Draw had won the Melbourne Cup.  Excitement bubbled up inside me.  I had never been so excited before.  I couldn’t believe my luck to score the winning ticket.
Dad walked with me to see his mate, the Station Master.  Even he was beaming!
Some loitering locals weren’t impressed however that I had won the sweep.  They suggested not so politely that my ticket should be disqualified because I was a minor and not legally entitled to bet.
The Station Master firmly replied, ‘The boy bought his ticket fair and square with money he earnt like everybody else.’  He then handed me a considerable amount of dosh with a broad smile.
I didn’t know it yet; but I’d need that money soon.  It would help change the direction of my future.  My win certainly was a miracle.
