Maywood Park Racetrack
One of my lifetime landmarks is disappearing with a wrecking ball take-down of Maywood Park Racetrack. Located less than five miles from where I grew up on Chicago’s far west side, it was always an iconic figure to me, even though I never set foot in the facility. There was a radio jingle when I was a kid that went, “Let’s all go to Maywood Park, North Avenue and River Rooooooad!” It was really at the southwest corner of North Ave. and First Ave., with River Road branching off of First Avenue just a bit to the north. But I guess River Road worked better for the jingle. That corner was a microcosm of post-World War II Americana. On the northwest corner was Kiddieland, a beautiful little amusement park that we worshipped as kids. Fortunately, it was still opened while my kids were growing up. (Kiddieland closed in 2009 and there is now a Costco on the property.) On the southeast corner, there was a small carnival-like amusement park with a giant slide and batting cages. The northeast corner, abutting the Des Plaines River, is forest preserve.
Maywood Park opened in 1946 and was used for harness racing of standardbred horses. It had a small one-half mile oval track. Although I had never been inside the facility, as a kid, it always fascinated me with it’s enclosed grandstand and bright floodlights at night. The family that owned Maywood Park also owned Balmoral Park in south suburban Crete. They were finding it difficult to sustain the business as interest in horse racing, particularly harness racing, has waned significantly with younger generations. When video gambling was legalized in Illinois a few years ago, allowing for slot machines in bars and mini storefront casinos, revenues at Maywood diminished further. Another factor was “pay to play.” According to the Chicago Tribune:
By 2012, video gaming machines at bars, restaurants and truck stops were legalized in Illinois, cutting deeper into harness racing's popularity. But the ultimate undoing of harness racing in the Chicago area is tied to an alleged "pay-to-play" scheme that involved campaign contributions to now-imprisoned Gov. Rod Blagojevich for legislation benefiting the racetracks. The U.S. Court of Appeals in 2014 ordered the racetracks to pay several local casinos $77.8 million in restitution. Balmoral and Maywood sought bankruptcy protection. A court later sharply reduced the judgment, but the racetracks were already on the way out. Races were conducted in 2015, but the Illinois Racing Board denied requests for 2016 dates and the tracks were forced out of business.
That was the death knell for Maywood Park as they could no longer compete for the available gambling dollars. The family closed the facility and sold the property. It will be developed into industrial buildings and a shopping center.
I am an infrequent visitor to race tracks, maybe once every two years during my adult life. This is a brief history of other Chicago area race tracks that are familiar to me:
Balmoral Park – Crete, IL
A harness racing track and owned by the same family as Maywood Park, it fell victim to the same circumstances as Maywood Park. However, it was purchased and repurposed as a horse “show” facility featuring show jumping and show hunting competition. I have never been to Balmoral Park.
Arlington Park – Arlington Heights, IL
This is the track I have been to the most. It is a beautiful facility for thoroughbred racing. It is open May through September. They have a myriad of promotions and special events including live music and they have family days on the last Sunday of each month. A day at Arlington is always a fun summer outing. Although Arlington Park has been around since 1927, a fire burned down the clubhouse and grandstand in 1985. The facility was rebuilt and has a much more modern and cleaner look than other area racetracks.
Hawthorne Race Course – Cicero, IL
I’ve been to this track four or five times. Located on Chicago’s southwest side, it has an older, grittier feel to it as compared to Arlington. Like Arlington, the grandstand was destroyed by fire in 1978. So the new grandstand is not much older than the new Arlington grandstand, but still feels much older. Over the years, this track has featured both thoroughbred racing and standardbred harness racing. I have only been there for thoroughbred racing. What I do like about this track is that it is open year-round. It is fun to attend during the cold weather months as it gives you a little taste of an outdoor sport during an otherwise non-outdoor season.
Sportman’s Park – Cicero, IL
Located across the street from Hawthorne Race Track, Sportman’s operated jointly with Hawthorne back in the heyday of horseracing. I was never in Sportman’s, but I remember being able to see it from the grandstand building at Hawthorne. In 1999, it was converted to an auto racetrack, and renamed Chicago Motor Speedway at Sportsman’s Park. However, it was short-lived as a motor speedway. In 2001, the Chicagoland Speedway opened in Joliet and all the major races moved there. By 2003, the old facility closed and was later demolished.
Washington Park Race Track – Homewood, IL
This track first opened in 1884 in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood, across the street from it’s namesake Washington Park at 61st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. In 1926, it moved to south suburban Homewood, IL. I was at this track once, but not for horse racing. On the Bicentennial day of July 4, 1976, I was there for a concert seeing Jefferson Starship and The Marshall Tucker Band. I took my little sister Peggy. She was 15 at the time and it was her first concert. We had great seats, just a few rows back from the stage. (That was back in the day when SRO general admission shows were rare.) Seven months later, on February 5, 1977, Washington Park burned down and was never rebuilt.

The Best Locations in DFW for Remote Workers
Metropolitan areas like Dallas-Fort Worth offer plenty of appeal for current and prospective residents. There are sports teams, recreational areas, well-rated restaurants and a variety of other entertainment options to enjoy, as well as warm weather and a family-friendly environment. The only problem with large metro areas? Traffic. And lots of it. This isn’t as big of a problem for the rising number of remote workers these days, but you still have to pick where you live carefully if you want to avoid frustration and delays. Four North Texas cities made the Top 10 list for LawnStarter’s 2022’s Best Cities for Remote Workers. Let’s discuss each of them. 1. Frisco According to Rocket Mortgage (and several other publications), Frisco is the fastest-growing city in the United States. This has been a trend for a few years now, with more and more would-be residents flocking to the newly developing area north of Dallas. Home to the Frisco RoughRiders minor league baseball team, the FC Dallas soccer team and a wide variety of malls and restaurants, it’s easy to see why Frisco is growing in popularity. 2. Dallas Dallas itself is becoming more in-demand with remote workers, as there’s less of a need to travel outside the city center if you work from home. The variety of apartment, condo and townhouse options in and near Downtown Dallas is aplenty, so finding an ideal home near your favorite bars, nightlife, clubs, museums and other points of interest is easier than in the suburbs. 3. Arlington Another ideal candidate for remote workers in Dallas-Fort Worth is Arlington. A large city in itself, Arlington is centrally located between Dallas and Fort Worth and has seen surprising development in recent years, with new stadiums for local sports teams like the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys being developed. Major companies are employing more people in Arlington and its close proximity to every daily need makes it a remote worker’s dream. 4. Plano Finally, Plano is a large suburb in DFW that is ideal for remote workers. It spans a wide area from west to east, so there are plenty of neighborhoods and housing options to choose from. As with Frisco, Plano is in Collin County and boasts a wide variety of demographics and terrain. Enjoy lakes, bike trails, corporate headquarters and so much more. If you’re a remote worker interested in living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, consider using a SAM (Store & Move) container. Contact us for a no-obligation consultation today! Read the full article

Popular Boston attractions and where to find parking near them
There are always loads of interesting places to visit and fun things to do in Boston. However, trying to find inexpensive parking near popular Boston locations can feel like a wild goose chase! On-street and on-site parking near Boston's most popular attractions is almost always extraordinarily expensive. Here's our guide to some of the best things to do in Boston and where to find parking near them.
Boston Common and Public Garden
Have you even been to Boston if you haven't taken a ride on one of the Boston Public Garden Swan Boats? The Boston Public Garden is America's first botanical garden, while the Boston common is the nation's oldest public park. Both Boston Common and Public Garden are the heart of the city and are separated down the middle by Charles Street. Here you'll find buskers, entertainers, picnickers, picturesque ponds, and plenty of flowers. You'll find the closest affordable parking spots near the Boston Common and Public Garden will be in one of the lots on Boylston Street or Arlington Street.
New England Aquarium
No list of things to do in Boston is complete without a visit to the New England Aquarium. Take some time to chill with the adorable little blue penguins at the New England Aquarium. The penguins aren't the only attraction at this aquarium. There is plenty of other marine life here - from stingrays, baby sharks, turtles, horseshoe crabs, sea dragons, and starfish! There's an IMAX theater where you can watch movies on marine life. One of the main attractions here is watching a penguin or seal feeding. You'll probably need to spend quite a few hours here, and it might be a good idea to book your parking in advance. The ideal places to park near the New England Aquarium would be on Westland Avenue or Arlington Street.
Beacon Hill
Exploring one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the country has to be one of the things you do in Boston. This historic area with its Federal-style row houses, quaint, cobblestoned alleys, gas street lamps, and colorful, flower-filled window boxes is the perfect place for a quiet stroll. There are also plenty of Instagram-worthy locations, like Louisburg Square and Acorn Street, where you can snap a picture or two. The restaurants, shops, and bars on Charles Street are also worth visiting. Charles Street also offers decent parking options, as does Boylston Street nearby.
Freedom Trail
Walk the 2-and-a-half-mile Freedom Trail to take in Boston's history and culture. The red brick path that constitutes the trail is lined with 16 historic landmarks, including the Paul Revere House, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Old North Church, and Copp's Hill Burial Ground. Taking in all of the attractions on the Freedom Trail will take you at requires at least half a day. So, find a comfortable place for your car to nap in while you walk the trail. We recommend Cooper Street or one of the parking lots on Westland Avenue.
Fenway Park
A visit to the Fenway Park, one of America's oldest and most revered ballparks, is a must on any sports lover's things do in Boston list will include a visit to Fenway Park. Fenway Park is the home stadium of Boston Red Sox, and watching a game here is almost a rite of passage for every Bostonian. Even if you aren't a Red Sox fan, it's worth taking a tour of the oldest Major League baseball stadium in the country. There's also a pub under the bleachers with a really close view of the field. Parking at Fenway Park can be a bit pricey, and if you want to save some money, we advise you park in one of the lots on Boylston Street or Kilmarnock Street.
Quincy Market
Quincy Market, in the heart of downtown Boston, is a favorite destination for both locals and tourists. Quincy Market combines the past glories and the energy of the present. The market is home to over 50 shops, 14 restaurants, as well as 40 food court stops. For over 250 years, the Quincy Market has played an vital role in Boston's residents' lives. Street performers often entertain the crowds around the market in summer. Jugglers, clowns, puppeteers, musicians, and magicians are just a few of the entertainers that can be seen on the cobblestone promenade. The Quincy Market is a place you want to spend time walking around. So, you would do well to find an affordable place to park nearby. Some of the best parking spots near Quincy Market can be located on Clinton Street and State Street.
Skywalk Observatory
The Skywalk Observatory is the only 360degree observatory in New England, where you can have a panoramic view of Boston. Standing there, you will be able to see the beautiful Charles River as well as the city's historical and cultural sites. On days with clear skies, you can see up to 100 miles away. You can also unwind with a drink at Top of the Hub, a restaurant on the 52nd floor, and watch the sun go down. If you're visiting the Skywalk Observatory, the best places to park nearby can be found on Belvidere Street and Boylston Street.
Boston Logan Airport
The Boston Logan Airport can be considered a destination in itself. With plenty of restaurants and bars, exquisite art exhibits, and loads of shopping options, Logan Airport is a great place to hang out at once you get in. Getting to the Logan airport, on the other hand, can be quite challenging. If you're driving to the airport, on-site Logan Airport parking can pricey and challenging to access. If you are looking for more affordable Logan long term parking options, choose parking near Logan instead of at the airport. These parking lots near Logan offer better prices, be booked ahead of your travel, and are more easily accessible.
The fantastic historic sites, incredible architecture, and delicious seafood are not the only attractions Boston offers. Whether it's the Charles River, Boston Common, or world-renowned universities like Harvard or MIT, Boston is literally bursting with amazing things to see and do. You should try to spend your time and money enjoying all the awesome things to do in Boston rather than circling blocks looking for a spot to park. Parking in Boston doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. By booking your Boston parking space in advance, you can make your visit to the top attractions in Boston easy and hassle-free.

College Football 2020 Season Week 8 TV Watch Em Ups: this is entirely too much football
Welcome back to football, B1G. Now go away and leave us all to relive old sports moments, we’re all full up on new ones.
Well maybe not that, exactly, but there’s a damn pandemic on and it’s ramping up like crazy right now. Why is any of this shit worth it? And why can’t I look away? Life is one long cycle of sticking your mouth to the millstone and grinding your teeth and jaw and skull and all the rest of your bones into dust with only little bits of respite here and there to make you feel like it’s all worthwhile. And maybe it is. Maybe watching people maimed for enjoyment is that bit of respite. If you’re lucky you can win a couple of dollars for your watching skills. I’d still prefer to propose that instead of wasting away waiting for rewards in another lifetime that we fight for a better existence on this plane but, you know, I don’t like fighting all that much.
So, football...
Saturday, October 24
Matchup Time (ET) TV/MobileTickets
Auburn at Mississippi 12:00pm SECN
Wurrdammeegull.
Rutgers at Michigan State 12:00pm BTN
There are really people willing to risk their live for this. This game barely had a pretext for existing in the best of times.
Nebraska at 5 Ohio State 12:00pm FOX
Notre Dame is #3 right now but let’s be honest for a moment here: Ohio State is our only real hope for a third good team this year. And I’m not saying they are good in the same way that Clemson and Alabama are good. Justin Fields bores me to tears somehow and a six game season that ends with another blowout of Wisconsin is probably still not enough sample to make any sort of definitive judgment of the Buckeyes before we reach bowl season. But look at us now after whatever formless bunch of nonsense that has already passed, it’s enough to say everybody sucks.
Mercer at Army 12:00pm CBSSN
This game isn’t listed on Vegas Insider so maybe it’s not really happening. If everybody promises to ignore it maybe it won’t exist.
Georgia Southern at 25 Coastal Carolina 12:00pm ESPNU
Coastal Caroline is ranked. How did we, as a society, allow such a thing to happen?
Temple at Memphis 12:00pm ESPN+
Memphis could still string together a resume that’s good for the outsider’s bid in the fancy bowl games. I sort of feel like Memphis -13.5 is dangerous against Temple even though Memphis should win this game by 5 touchdowns.
UTEP at Charlotte 12:00pm ESPN+
Huh. Sure.
Florida State at Louisville 12:00pm RSN/ESPN3
Lamar Jackson basically won the Heisman by running through FSU in a game in September a few years ago and the Noles haven’t been quite right since then. Mike Norvell is getting dangerously close to looking like a good hire right now and if FSU can pull off a second straight upset we’ll start seeing some positive press about them. My advice is to take FSU +5 if you can get it.
23 NC State at 14 North Carolina 12:00pm ESPN
That top five ranking sure didn’t last long. Here’s to hoping the top 25 ranking goes soon, too.
Syracuse at 1 Clemson 12:00pm ACCN
Don’t ever bet anybody -46, okay? Now having said that, Eric Dungey ain’t breakin’ that huddle.
Kansas at 20 Kansas State 12:00pm FS1
I wonder if players and coaches feel as disconnected from what has happened so far this season as I do. Like a collective COVID fog. The rankings and results and lines all feel vaguely like hallucinations.
Oklahoma at TCU 12:00pm ABC
I want Oklahoma to just keep losing and then have Lincoln Riley take the Cowboys job in a couple of weeks when Jerry Jones fires Mike McCarthy.
Southern Miss at Liberty 1:00pm ESPN3
Speaking of the vaguely hallucinogenic properties of this season, Liberty might get into the top 25 within the next three weeks.
Stephen F. Austin vs. Abilene Christian (in Arlington, TX) 1:30pm FloSports
FloSports really should have been saved for a channel dedicated to Florida teams but it’s actually based in Austin and is named for the founders, the Floreani brothers. I fucking hate it.
Tulane at UCF 2:00pm ESPN2
Heupel is obviously bolting for Norman, OK the first chance he gets. Go ahead and spread rumors that he’s already agreed to take the job in November after my scenario in the Oklahoma/TCU capsule plays out. Speculation is good. The wilder the better.
Florida Atlantic at 22 Marshall 2:30pm Stadium
Welcome Marshall back to the top 25. See how this is all faker than shit?
Central Arkansas at Eastern Kentucky 3:00pm ESPN+
Super. Just great.
3 Notre Dame at Pitt 3:30pm ABC
It would make perfect sense for Pitt to follow one of the worst coached performances of all time with an upset of a very heavily even more than usual overrated Notre Dame team. Seriously, this Notre Dame team sucks. Clemson is going to truck them into the grave. As for how to apply that knowledge to this game, it’s still a Pitt game and you are fucking killing yourself if you bet on Pitt games.
Houston at Navy 3:30pm CBSSN
CBS Sports is back, baby! Go Middies.
Middle Tennessee at Rice 3:30pm ESPN3
Imagine watching this game.
19 Virginia Tech at Wake Forest 3:30pm RSN/ESPN3
Baylor at Texas 3:30pm ESPN
I may just write some version of this every week but Vince Young carrying Texas to a national championship was way more aberrational than the Longhorns being mediocre.
17 Iowa State at 6 Oklahoma State 3:30pm FOX
It might be time to cut the top 25 down to like four teams.
2 Alabama at Tennessee 3:30pm CBS
Trap game for Bama! They may only win by 20.
Iowa at Purdue 3:30pm BTN
I love Rondale Moore as much as anybody but come the fuck on, nobody needed the B1G back.
8 Penn State at Indiana 3:30pm FS1
If Indiana wins this game then it was worth it to bring back B1G football.
Chattanooga at WKU 4:00pm ESPN3
No.
Kentucky at Missouri 4:00pm SECN
This game means more as fuck.
Georgia State at Troy 4:00pm ESPNU
I’m dying here.
Georgia Tech at Boston College 4:00pm ACCN
Writing these posts every week has got to be the dumbest cry for help going.
West Virginia at Texas Tech 5:30pm ESPN2
South Carolina at LSU7:00pmESPN
ULM at South Alabama7:00pmESPN+
Utah State at Boise State7:00pmFS1
Wyoming at Nevada7:00pmCBSSN
Maryland at Northwestern7:30pmBTN
18 Michigan at 21 Minnesota7:30pmABC
Hawaii at Fresno State7:30pmKSEE24
Louisiana Tech at UTSA8:00pmESPNU
Virginia at 11 Miami (FL) 8:00pm ACCN
I’m too tired right now to write the rest of this but I wanted to say that this game is, pathetically, a huge game for Miami. If they can hold their shit together and crusie past UVA, the Canes are in pretty good shape right now in the ACC. That is a shameful bar to still need to pass.
9 Cincinnati at 16 SMU9:00pmESPN2

Summer is the season for travel. If you’ve been considering coming down (or up) to the Lone Star State, here are the best cities to visit in Texas based on the experiences of a Texan™!
Travel Reminders and Fun Texan Facts
Texas is very hot in the summer! It can get up to 110 degrees F depending on where you are. Make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, shorts, tank tops, and sandals.
If you’re visiting in the winter, STILL PACK SHORTS! Our weather changes constantly and can’t make up its mind. One day it will be in the 30s and the next it will be in the 80s. In Texas, you’re never safe from the heat.
Texas used to be its own country! We were called The Republic of Texas and this lasted for about ten years. (But it still counts!)
Our flag can be flown at the same height as the U.S. flag because of this AND we have our own pledge of allegiance.
Pretty much all of Texas is a historic site.
We’re known for our Southern hospitality and friendliness, but if you’re LGBTQ+ be careful in small towns.
We have a lot of rednecks and cowboys. You will see a lot of trucks, camouflage, Stetson hats, cowboy boots, button up shirts, jeans, horses, cows, beer, etc.
Remember the Alamo.
Bluebonnet season is the best time to visit, but DON’T PICK THEM, IT’S ILLEGAL!
Finally, you HAVE to try some Southern country cooking, Tex-Mex, and of course, Whataburger. I suggest Babe’s, Texas Roadhouse, and Cracker Barrel.
1. San Antonio
San Antonio is known as “The River City.” Winding through the city is the San Antonio River, which has a lovely river walk that goes all throughout downtown. There are many incredible restaurants, bars, gift shops, stores, theaters, a mall, and more right on the river.
For history buffs, the city of San Antonio is built on the grounds of the Battle of the Alamo, which occurred in 1836. In Texas, we have a special saying, “Remember the Alamo!”, which is taught to Texas students as early as first grade. If you’re going to Texas, this is a necessary trip. The Alamo chapel that was fortified in this battle still stands today as a historical landmark dedicated to the hundreds of men who perished on those grounds. You may expect for this to be located outside of the city, however, downtown San Antonio was built AROUND the remains of the Alamo. As soon as you step out of Alamo Plaza, you’re back among the tourist traps, gift shops, and skyscrapers. Alternatively, don’t be surprised to see a 200-year-old chapel in the middle of the city as you drive through. The Alamo is one of several missions located in the area, so if you find this era interesting, you may want to check out the others!
For those who love a good scare, there are several haunted hotels and other locations around town. If you would like a ghost tour of the city, visit Sisters Grimm Tours and Gift Shop at Rivercenter Mall. Of note, the Menger Hotel is known as the most haunted hotel in Texas. The Menger opened its doors in 1859, 23 years after the Battle of the Alamo, and sits right next door to the old chapel. 32 ghosts have been confirmed at the Menger, most notably the ghost of Sallie White, a housekeeper who was murdered by her husband. The Emily Morgan hotel was previously a psych ward and is also known for being quite haunted. No one is allowed on the top floor because, as a tour guide once described to me, people have been “thrown off” by ghosts. You should also be prepared to watch your coats, as it is common for them to be thrown off of racks. Of course, since hundreds perished at the Alamo, you can expect your ghost tour guide to make a stop there.
2. Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington
Even on road signs, Dallas and Fort Worth grouped together as “DFW.” Fort Worth is pretty much a smaller version of Dallas and is very close to its sister city. Arlington is nearby as well with unique attractions of its own, such as the original Six Flags and many shopping malls.
In all three cities, you’ll find great shopping centers and malls when you need some retail therapy. There are also several museums, from the incredible Perot Science Museum to the Dallas Holocaust Museum, to the Dallas Museum of Art.
In Dallas, I highly suggest checking out the food trucks in Klyde Warren Park. There are many delicious options that change throughout the year and there are many family-friendly activities to be found. Even if you just stop by for a quick lunch, this area is always pleasant. I also suggest stopping by La Madeleine at breakfast time for authentic French cuisine and Wild Salsa for authentic Mexican food. Besides restaurants, my best recommendations for Dallas are Dallas Summer Musicals and the Texas State Fair in the fall. They are in basically the same location and while they can be expensive at times, they’re definitely worth it.
In Fort Worth, make sure to check out the Water Gardens, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Fort Worth Zoo. I’ve visited these attractions on many occasions with my school and they are all very enjoyable. In the spring, there is an amazing art festival called the Main Street Arts Festival. Booths are set up all along Main Street showing off works from both upcoming and world-renowned artists. The restaurants on Main are incredible, but so are the food booths at the end of the Festival grounds.
Arlington is the birthplace of the original Six Flags, Six Flags Over Texas. Six Flags gets its name from the fact that Texas has been under the rule of six different flags throughout its history, including Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, and of course, the United States. Six Flags Over Texas is a thrilling amusement park with breathtaking rides such as the famous Texas Giant, the Titan, Runaway Mountain, Mr. Freeze: Reverse Blast, Batman the Ride, and Superman Tower of Power.
For sports fans, Arlington is home to the AT&T stadium where the Cowboys play, Globe Life Park where the Rangers play, and more. I highly suggest taking tours or going to a game if you can.
3. Austin (Texan Home Base)
Austin is the capital of Texas and was the capital of the Republic of Texas as well. Fair warning: the traffic is horrendous. However, Austin has many great attractions and historical sites that make it worth the trouble. (Plus, I was born here so it’s obviously great!)
One of the things Austin is known for that you may not have heard about is bats. Under and around Congress Bridge, there are over one MILLION bats waiting for the night. People flock to Austin to watch as they wake from their slumber and fly off into the night.
The Capital Building of Texas is open for touring and is a great place to learn about Texas history and government. Around that area, there are several other government buildings and historical landmarks as well, even from when Texas was its own country.
Nearby you can find the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers, which are well known and loved for being an incredible tubing spot. You can bring some friends or family and relax as you float gently down the rivers along with many other locals and tourists.
The University of Texas is one of the most prestigious universities in the U.S. For those that are checking out possible universities or those that love the atmosphere of a college campus, this is a wonderful place to be. UT is well known for sports as well, just in case you know any Longhorn fans.
Other unique attractions around Austin are Lake Travis Waterloo Adventures, Lady Bird Lake, Lake Travis Zip Lines, Austin Wine Tours, The Escape Game, and more. Austin’s motto is “Stay Weird,” so you’ll be able to find many quirky places to visit and enjoy.
4. Houston
Houston is the largest city in Texas and has many attractions to share with tourists. If you’re a fan of space or you’re one of those people that wear NASA shirts, Houston is where they train astronauts. You can tour Space Center Houston and the Johnson Space Center. While I’ve never been there myself, I’ve heard many great things.
If you love nature and science, check out the Houston Zoo, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Downtown Aquarium, the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, and the rest of the Museum District.
In Houston’s many parks and theaters, you can find endless live music and shows to entertain you during your visit. The theater district has a lot to offer and is a wonderful place to take family and friends. There are SEVERAL different art museums for those who appreciate it.
For history buffs, there are also many historic sites such as the Battleship Texas, the San Jacinto Museum of History, The Menil Collection, the Lone Star Flight Museum, Holocaust Museum Houston, and last and possibly the strangest, the National Museum of Funeral History.
5. Denton (AKA Mini Austin)
I will admit that I am biased towards Denton because I’m a Mean Green fan. However, Denton is genuinely a fun, lively, quirky place that deserves to be mentioned. There are two sides of Denton: the older part where The Square is, and the newer part with all the shopping centers and the mall
The Square is filled with locally owned shops, restaurants, and attractions. In the center, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Denton County courthouse. My favorite places are Recycled Books, which is in an old opera house, LSA Burgers, and Atomic Candy. It is also near the University of North Texas (#GoMeanGreen), Texas Women’s University, which has a gorgeous campus, and Fry Street, where you can find several karaoke bars and delicious hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
Because UNT is a well-known music school, Denton has an incredible music scene. At many places on The Square and even on campus, you can find live bands playing all the time. Also on the Square or in the park near TWU, there are several music and arts festivals for creative minds.
On the other side of Denton, you’ll find many different shopping centers and an indoor mall. Whatever you need or want, Denton will have it and at a better than bigger shopping cities like Frisco. Because many shops in Denton are locally owned, you can support local artists, cooks, and vendors by buying things that you love.
For those who love a good ghost story, Old Alton Bridge is on the border between Denton and Argyle. It was featured in an episode of Buzzfeed Unsolved and attracts many visitors at night. It is supposedly a favorite spot of Satanic cults and you will find many Satanic symbols on the bridge and in the surrounding forest. Many people claim to have seen a demonic Goatman, which is why the bridge is also called Goatman’s Bridge. Or, if you’re a Buzzfeed Unsolved fan, Shane’s Bridge. If you want to know whether or not the legends from locals are true, you’ll have to come out at night and find out yourself.
If you’re a sports fan, I highly suggest coming to see a UNT game at Apogee Stadium. UNT’s football team currently features Mason Fine who is rated as the 3rd best quarterback in the nation. He’s also up for the Heisman Trophy this year, and I’m very excited to see if he’ll win.
Honorable Mentions (In No Particular Order)

The Evolution of My Relationships with Men...
Men..... Forever been the most confusing part of my existence. Whether it be my "incomplete fulfillment of masculinity", the lack of ability to completely relate to the men in my life as a child, or the quest to see myself as never fully masculine enough to be the man I always wanted to be..... men probably have been just as confusing to me, if not, more confusing to me than women. Over the past few years, with the exception of my friends, I mostly have related to men on some sort of sexual level....disregarding, yet desiring the need for intimacy. But over the past several weeks, I find myself at some sort of crossroads which I constantly have to reflect... There have been a litany of men who have brought me to this point in my life: Todd Woodward, Steven Gray, Bobby Jackson, Tony Leonard, Keith Dwayne Thomas, Francis Patrick Ellis,....just to name a few. But there are several more who I find myself at some sort of strange quandary. Very diverse, each tapping into some part of me.... DeLeon Barnett: The youndg 22-year old from PG County via North Carolina. So debonair and sassy. I never could see myself, seeking him out. But he was the ballsy young one who asked me out and kept talking to me. Why? I never knew. Never thinking I could see myself with a young, upstart to East Coast sophistication, seeking a graduate level education status, yet longing to play a Stepford Wife with country tinge. Why do I love to hear his over-the-top persona? I don't know. He's so much his own person with his own struggle who somehow has decided I am worth his time...to keep in touch with....and to continue to text and long. I remember when he seemed to pull away, when I could so easily press lips to his, only to find that once I left DC...he secretly wished for that. Damian Hill: The 24-year old R&B crooner to be who is caught between his own problem of being that romantic/gospel balladeer and reconciling that with his sexuality...I can tell he has a bit of a struggle on his hand. But he has this essence about him that will push for what he wants and will continue forward until he gets it. In the middle of his own push to a record contract and a music career, he's this young Huntsville bred boy who consistently declared me, somehow as a part of his agenda. This boy constantly sent me message on GRINDR for six months, awaiting for me to come back to Dallas. Why me? And I met him for a hook-up and thought he was a dude worth getting to know. But our course is frustrating me, because I'm not he's completely prepared for an intensely loving relationship and all the demands that it has....I think about it all the time and I'm frequently frustrated by it. But I can't seem to come to some sort of decision about it. Korey Len (Lynn) Moore: This boy I've yet to meet. He's a trip. Pothead. Transplant from DC, bumming it in Arlington. Looking for jobs. He's apparently got a nice body but a face like Seal.....so um, yeah I don't know where this is supposed to go or to be. But he cracks me the f#%# up. From the four-letter laden rants against organized religion as evident by his rebellious nature as PK (Preacher's Kid), he's crazy and has this point to him where he could be well-functioning pot addict who has some understanding about his limits. Relationship material? Probably not. But a handy resource I sense. Ryan: A prepped out 22 year old transplant from LA...Belizian pretty boy who has some crazy weird, Akemi essence. He doesnt due outlet malls or sports bars....drinks mixed drinks only, douses himself in cologne, and lives only in McKinney or Las Colinas...who hates Texas. The boy is a pretty boy, saddidy, young dude. A turn-off? Uh...yeah, you know, I've grown weary of the extra....but, he's quite surprising. He has a sarcastic, clever banter that we can go at for hours. And exudes a shyness which makes me curious.....Curious to see if beyond all that pretty boy facade lies a sweet, cute boy who just wants to take it easy and be comfortable. Yeah, he's so cute but he might be even cuter than would even expect. Now, all of this comes across after only one night. I don't know what to expect but there's something substantive there...maybe, he doesn't care to continue. But I have the feeling if we don't continue, even as friends, I'm going to make it not be due to lack of trying on my part, and that's all I can do....... James: A crazy, pretty laid-back guy from ATL living in Euless (soon to move to Downtown) who is more attractive than he credits himself to be. How did we just meet online and then flirt from dirty talk to just chatting, only to meet at Club Babylon (in which I never went to, but needed a reason to check out). Only to find that he knows the owner and just chills there because he's bored of Dallas and Dallas culture and wants to go back to ATL. But he's been around enough to know he wants more out of life than a simple paycheck or a beautiful dude who knows how to put it down in the bedroom. I think he empowers so much that I used to feel when I was younger and could reconnect me to a former self of who I was....including, reconciling going to both church and a strip club all in the same Sunday. Why am I reflecting so much on these guys? I think, because there's something in common. They all from outside of Dallas and bring a perspective of gay culture that is so very different and less toxic for a black gay male than what lies in this city. I remember how I felt about culture in DC and how I miss it....they extend some essence of that for me. They all see enough in me to not feel I'm not a waste of their time. Maybe my life and love lies outside of Dallas. Whatever happens, I think I need to someone how move beyond this place....which makes me not happy to be back. More importantly, I am drawn to each of them....not for sex (although sex would not be a bad thing) But because I feel like if I spend time with them, I know I wouldn't be bored and I would want find some way to keep them interested and excited. If I lost contact with any of them, I would find myself rather upset. I don't want to lose any of them, because all of the potential they all possess. I'm just going to keep these things in perspective, because I could somehow lose them all. But I gotta realize that somehow, there is hope for me.......just not in Dallas.

Aleppo Palace (25 Central Sq., Central Square, Cambridge): A renovation and rebranding of Moody’s Falafel Palace, a longtime late-night standby in Central Square.
Blackbird Doughnuts (100 Holton St., Brighton, Boston): This is the fourth location for the local doughnut chain, which is related to the Gallows and Banyan in the South End. This location includes retail space as well as production space.
Bruins Bar (Logan Airport — Terminal A, East Boston): Like Shōjō (below), this is part of a massive wave of new openings at the airport. As the name suggests, it’s a hockey-themed sports bar.
Buttonwood (51 Lincoln St., Newton): The Sycamore and Little Big Diner sibling first debuted at the beginning of 2018, quickly building a fanbase and snagging a good Globe review, when an electrical fire shut it down. Now, after nearly a year of renovations, it’s back, serving pork schnitzel, cheeseburgers, whole grilled branzino, and more.
Courtyard Tea Room and Map Room Tea Lounge (Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): BPL dining (and drinking) has received an upgrade with a rebranding of the Courtyard Restaurant and the addition of a lounge serving tea-infused cocktails and snacks.
The Derby Restaurant (189 Washington St., Salem): The Tavern in the Square team rebranded the Salem location into the Derby Restaurant, which is meant to have more of a local feel and serves dishes like po’ boy tacos, steak tips, and more.

Fiorella’s Express (575 Washington St., Wellesley): This casual Italian spot — part of a small local chain — took over the former Susu Bakery space.
Fomu (140 Brookline Ave., Fenway, Boston): This is the fourth permanent location for the local vegan ice cream chain.
The Grateful Dedham Diner (573 High St., Dedham Square, Dedham): This punnily named diner took over a former D’Angelo’s space and serves all-day breakfast.
Gustazo Cuban Kitchen & Bar (2067 Massachusetts Ave., Porter Square, Cambridge): This Waltham favorite for Cuban food has expanded to the former Elephant Walk space in Cambridge and features a cocktail list by Backbar’s Sam Treadway.
Horse Thieves Tavern (585 High St., Dedham): This “modern interpretation on a traditional New England tavern,” as it describes itself, serves roasted cod, fried chicken sandwiches, loaded Hasselback potatoes, cast iron s’mores, and more.
In the Game (535 Lowell St., Peabody): This entertainment venue — which features laser tag, bowling, and other attractions — also has a bar and restaurant.
Kane’s Donuts (Essex Landing, Rte. 1, Saugus): This is the second Saugus location — and third overall — for the popular doughnut shop. This new one is on the site of a former mini golf course known for an orange dinosaur statue (which remains standing).
Lobstah on a Roll (135 Lafayette St., Salem): The seafood restaurant from Boston’s South End has expanded to the North Shore with its mega lobster rolls.
Masala Square (23 Union Sq., Union Square, Somerville): This family-run restaurant focuses on food from the northern Indian state of Punjab and offers plenty of gluten-free and vegan options as well as affordable lunch deals.
Night Shift Brewing at Lovejoy Wharf (1 Lovejoy Wharf, Suite 101, West End, Boston): The popular Everett-based brewery expanded to Boston proper with this giant new space — brewery, taproom, restaurant, cafe, and coffee roasting facility.
Pho Paris (906 Washington St., Braintree): Pho and other Vietnamese food in the former Pho Vietnam space.
Popover King (74 Canal St., West End, Boston): Popovers stuffed with a variety of sweet and savory fillings, plus other New England-y baked goods and more.

Sarcastic Swine BBQ Restaurant and Catering (988 Bedford St., Abington): Brisket, pulled pork, hush puppies, and more — not to mention burritos.
Shōjō (Logan Airport — Terminal C, East Boston): The Chinatown favorite has expanded to the airport with favorites like the shadowless fries and the Shojonator burger, as well as all-day congee, a full bar, and grab-and-go meals meant to be flight-friendly.
Tatte Bakery & Cafe (201 Washington St., Downtown Boston): The local bakery chain keeps expanding. This one makes a dozen (and it’s the second in downtown Boston).
Usushi Cafe (474 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington): Rice bowls, sushi rolls, and bubble tea.
Vaanga (102 Water St., Downtown Boston): This self-described “crazy Indian joint” comes from the Godavari team and serves samosa burgers, “desi tacos,” and “baerittos.”
Closings
Rachel Leah Blumenthal/Eater
A pita full of falafel at Amsterdam Falafelshop
Amsterdam Falafelshop (248 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville): This had been the first local outpost of a small DC-based falafel chain — and the last remaining local one. (A Kenmore Square location opened and closed during the Somerville location’s lifespan.)
Cafe Jaffa (48 Gloucester St., Back Bay, Boston): This Middle Eastern restaurant had been open for close to 30 years, serving stuffed grape leaves, falafel, and more.
La Perle Caribbean Restaurant (41 Bow St., Everett): Owner Valery Joseph is actively working to find a new location for the Caribbean restaurant, which closed as a result of disruptive casino construction nearby.
Sassafras (668 Broadway, Ball Square, Somerville): This vegetarian reinvention of Eat at Jumbo’s may end up living on in some form, such as a meal delivery service, so stay tuned for updates.
Sorella’s (388 Centre St., Jamaica Plain): This neighborhood breakfast staple had been around for 36 years.

Simone Biles
Simone Arianne Biles (born March 14, 1997) is an American artistic gymnast. Biles is the 2016 Olympic individual all-around, vault and floor gold medalist. She was part of the gold medal-winning team dubbed the "Final Five" at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She also won the bronze medal for the balance beam during the Olympics. Biles is a three-time world all-around champion (2013–15), three-time world floor champion (2013–15), two-time world balance beam champion (2014, 2015), four-time United States national all-around champion (2013–16), and a member of the gold medal-winning American teams at the 2014 and 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
Having won a combined total of nineteen Olympic and World Championship medals, Biles is the most decorated American gymnast, taking over from Shannon Miller, who had held this record since 1996. With her win in Rio, Biles became the sixth woman to have won an individual all-around title at both the World Championships and the Olympic Games. With four Olympic gold medals, Biles set an American record for most gold medals in women’s gymnastics at a single Games.
Personal life
Simone Arianne Biles was born on March 14, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio, the third of four siblings. Her birth mother, Shanon Biles, was unable to care for Simone or her other children – Ashley, Tevin, and Adria – due to her drug and alcohol addiction, and the children were in and out of foster care. Simone's birth father, Kelvin Clemons, abandoned his family, struggled with addictions, and was never present in his daughter’s life. Shanon's father, Ron (Simone's grandfather), and his second wife, Nellie Cayetano Biles, who had two nearly-adult sons, Ron Jr. and Adam, began temporarily caring for Shanon's children in 2000, in the north Houston suburb of Spring, Texas and later in 2003 the couple officially adopted the two youngest children, Simone and Adria, and Ron's sister adopted the two oldest. Ron, Simone's father, is originally from Cleveland, and is a former air traffic controller, who served in the military with the U.S. Air Force at San Antonio's Randolph Air Force Base and later with the Federal Aviation Administration. Nellie, Simone's mother, emigrated from Belize, is a nurse and the former co-owner of a chain of fourteen Texas-based nursing homes.
Simone Biles spent all her secondary education as a homeschooler and graduated in summer 2015. She verbally committed to UCLA on August 4, 2014, announcing her decision on Twitter. She planned to defer enrollment until after the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. On July 29, 2015, she announced that she would turn professional, forfeiting her NCAA eligibility.
Biles is Catholic, and also holds Belizean citizenship through her mother. She refers to Belize as being her second home. Her sister Adria is also a gymnast.
Gymnastics career
Biles first tried gymnastics at 6 years old as part of a day-care field trip. The instructors suggested she continue with gymnastics. Biles soon enrolled in an optional training program at Bannon's Gymnastix. She began training with coach Aimee Boorman at age 8.
Junior2011
Biles began her career on July 1, 2011, at the 2011 American Classic in Houston. She placed third all-around, first on vault and balance beam, fourth on floor exercise, and eighth on uneven bars. Later that month, Biles competed at the 2011 U.S. Classic in Chicago, Illinois, where she placed twentieth all-around, fifth on balance beam and floor exercise.
2012
In 2012, Biles switched from public school to home schooling. The change allowed her to increase her training from approximately 20 hours a week to 32. Biles credited the increased training time with her improved success during the 2012 season.
Biles' first meet of 2012 was again the American Classic in Huntsville, Texas, where she placed first all-around and on vault, tied for second on floor exercise, placed third on balance beam and fourth on uneven bars. Biles' placement in the American Classic secured her spot to compete at the 2012 USA Gymnastics National Championships. She later competed at the 2012 U.S. Classic in Chicago. She finished first all-around and on vault, second on floor exercise, and sixth on balance beam. In June, she made her second appearance at the USA Gymnastics National Championships, this time in St. Louis, Missouri. She finished third all-around, first on vault, and sixth on uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. After this performance, Biles was named to the United States Junior National Team.
Senior2013
Biles' senior international debut was in March at the 2013 American Cup, a FIG World Cup event. She and Katelyn Ohashi were named as replacements for Elizabeth Price and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Kyla Ross, both of whom withdrew from the competition because of injuries. Biles led for two rotations but finished second behind her teammate, Ohashi, after a fall off the beam.
Biles immediately went on to compete at the 2013 City of Jesolo Trophy in Jesolo, Italy, where she took the all-around, vault, balance beam, and floor exercise titles in addition to contributing to the United States' team gold medal. She and the U.S. delegation then competed at an international tri-meet in Chemnitz, Germany, against teams from Germany and Romania. The U.S. again won the team gold. In addition, Biles won the vault, balance beam, and floor titles, but tied for second in the all-around behind Ross after a fall on the uneven bars.
In July, Biles competed at the 2013 U.S. Classic. She performed poorly, falling several times, and did not compete vault after tweaking her ankle on the floor exercise. Afterward, she was invited to a private camp with the national team coordinator, Marta Karolyi, and consulted a sports psychologist. Biles went on to compete at the 2013 USA Gymnastics National Championships in August, where she was crowned the national all-around champion ahead of Ross. Biles also won silver on all four individual events. After the USA Gymnastics National Championships, she was named to the Senior National Team and was invited to the qualifying camp for the 2013 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Texas, where she was named to the World Championships team.
In October, Biles competed at the 2013 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium. She qualified first in the all-around, second to the vault final, sixth to the uneven bars final, fifth to the balance beam final, and first to the floor final, making her the first American gymnast to qualify to the all-around and all four event finals since Shannon Miller in 1991. Biles competed cleanly during the women's individual all-around and won the competition with a score of 60.216, almost a point ahead of silver medalist Ross and almost a point and a half better than the bronze medalist, 2010 world all-around champion Aliya Mustafina. Biles became the seventh American woman and the first African-American to win the world all-around title. In event finals, she won silver on the vault, behind defending world champion and Olympic silver medalist McKayla Maroney and ahead of 2008 Olympic gold medalist Hong Un Jong of North Korea; bronze on balance beam, behind Mustafina and Ross; and gold on the floor exercise, ahead of Italy's Vanessa Ferrari and Romania's Larisa Iordache. She finished fourth in the uneven bars final, behind China's Huang Huidan, Ross, and Mustafina.
2014
Biles missed the start of season due to an aggravated shoulder injury, sitting out the 2014 AT&T American Cup and the 2014 Pacific Rim Championships. Biles 2014 debut came at the U.S. Classic in Chicago. She won the all-around by a wide margin and also took first place on vault, beam (tied with Ross), and floor. At the 2014 USA Gymnastics National Championships, Biles repeated as national all-around champion after two days of competition, finishing more than four points ahead of silver medalist Ross, despite a fall from the balance beam during her final routine of the meet. She won the gold on vault and floor, tied for the silver on balance beam with Alyssa Baumann, and finished fourth on the uneven bars. She was once again named to the Senior National Team.
On September 17, Biles was selected to compete at the 2014 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Nanning, China. She dominated the preliminary round despite a major error on the uneven bars, qualifying in first place to the all-around, vault, beam, and floor finals, in addition to contributing to the U.S. team's first-place qualification into the team final. During the team final, Biles led the United States to its second consecutive world team championship, which they won over the second-place Chinese team by nearly seven points. In the all-around, Biles performed cleanly on all four events, bettering her bars score from qualifications by over a point, and won her second consecutive world all-around title ahead of two good friends, Ross and Iordache. Biles became the second American woman to repeat as world all-around champion, following Miller (1993 and 1994), and the first woman of any nationality to do so since Russia's Svetlana Khorkina (2001 and 2003). She also received extra press when a video of her fleeing from a bee on the podium during the all-around award ceremony went viral. Biles finished behind North Korea's Hong Un Jong in the vault competition, taking her second consecutive silver medal in that event, but went on to win the gold in the balance beam final ahead of China's Bai Yawen and the gold in the floor exercise final, again, ahead of Iordache. This brought her total of World Championship gold medals to six, the most ever by an American gymnast, surpassing Miller's five. After the world championships, she was named one of ESPNW's Impact 25 and chosen as Sportswoman of the Year by the Women's Sports Foundation.
2015
Biles competed at the 2015 AT&T American Cup at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on March 7. She placed first with a score of 62.299, 4.467 points ahead of second-place finisher U.S. teammate Mykayla Skinner. Later that month, Biles was nominated for the James E. Sullivan Award. She ended the month at the 2015 City of Jesolo Trophy, winning the all-around title with 62.100.
On July 25, she competed at the U.S. Classic and finished first in the all-around, ahead of 2012 Olympic all-around champion Gabby Douglas and Maggie Nichols, with a score of 62.400. On the beam, she scored a 15.250 and took first at the event, ahead of Douglas and 2012 Olympic beam bronze medalist Aly Raisman. She scored a 16.050 on the floor and claimed first on the event, 1.050 points ahead of Douglas and also ahead of Nichols and Bailie Key. She had a small hop on her Amanar vault and scored a 16.000. She then scored 15.150 on her second vault, to score an average of 15.575 and place first in the event, ahead of 2014 Worlds vault bronze medalist and teammate MyKayla Skinner, who averaged 14.950. Biles ended on bars and scored a 15.100 to claim the all-around title. She placed fourth in the event behind 2014 Worlds teammate Madison Kocian, Douglas, and Key.
On July 29, shortly after her performance at the U.S. Classic, Biles announced that she would be turning pro, thus forfeiting her chance to compete for the UCLA Bruins gymnastics team. She signed with Octagon, who also supports fellow American gymnast Aly Raisman and Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. At the 2015 U.S. National Championships, Biles secured her third all-around national title, becoming only the second woman to ever do so, 23 years after Kim Zmeskal (1990, 1991, 1992).
Biles, along with Douglas, Dowell, Kocian, Nichols, Raisman, and Skinner, was selected to represent the United States at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. Biles once again qualified in first place to the all-around, vault, beam, and floor finals. Her uneven bars score would have qualified her in 8th place to that final as well, but she was excluded, as per the rules, after teammates Kocian and Douglas qualified ahead of her. In team finals, she helped the United States team win their third consecutive gold medal at a World Championships event. During the all-around final, Biles performed below her usual standard, taking a large hop on vault, landing out of bounds on floor (which she stated was a first), and grasping the beam to prevent a fall. However, her final score of 60.399 was more than enough to secure the title with her largest margin of victory yet (over a point ahead of silver medalist Gabby Douglas and bronze medalist Larisa Iordache). With that victory, Biles became the first woman to win three consecutive all-around titles in World Gymnastics Championships history. During day one of event finals, Biles competed on vault, taking bronze behind Maria Paseka (RUS) and Hong Un Jon (PRK). On day two, she competed on balance beam and floor exercise, retaining her world title on both events by large margins. This brought Biles' total World Championships medal count to 14, the most for any American, and total gold medal count to 10, the most for any woman in World Championships history.
As of November 11, 2015, she was a Nike-sponsored athlete – announcing this news through Twitter.
Biles was named Team USA Female Olympic Athlete of the Year in December 2015, making her the fourth gymnast to win the honor.
2016
Biles went into the 2016 season as a fourth-year senior and the reigning National champion. On December 17, 2015, USA Gymnastics announced that she would compete at the 2016 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships, in April 2016 in Everett, Washington.
At her first competition of the year, the Pacific Rim Championships, Biles came home with the all-around title and had the highest score on vault (where she debuted a more difficult second vault), floor exercise (where she debuted a new floor routine), and balance beam. Additionally, the US came home with the team title by a wide margin. Biles did not compete in the event finals.
On June 4, Biles competed at the Secret US Classic, on the uneven bars and beam. She did not compete vault or floor exercise. She achieved the highest score on beam, a 15.650, and also received a 15.1 on bars, good enough for 5th in the event.
In the following weeks, Biles competed at the 2016 USA Gymnastics National Championships. Her vault and floor routines all received marks of at least sixteen all four times, and she received the national titles of both, respectively. On bars, she scored 14.750 and an average of 14.925, just shy of a 15 average, and a bronze for the event. On beam she again did very well, with very minor struggles on Day 2, again winning another medal. She won the all-around title by a wide margin of 3.9 points over Aly Raisman. Her two-day total was 125 points even, with an all-around average of 62.5 points.
On July 10, Biles was named to the team for the 2016 Olympics, alongside Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman.
In September 2016, Biles' medical information was released following the Russian cyber espionage group Fancy Bear's hack into the World Anti Doping Agency. Biles then disclosed on Twitter that she has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and was permitted to take medication for it, having applied for and received a Therapeutic Use Exemption.
In 2016 she was chosen as one of BBC's 100 Women, and as the 2016 espnW IMPACT25 Woman of the Year. She was also one of the finalists for Time magazine's 2016 Person of the Year. Biles was also nominated for a 2016 ESPY award for Best Female Athlete along with Elena Delle Donne, Katie Ledecky, and Breanna Stewart; Stewart won the award.
2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics
Biles appeared with gymnasts Dominique Dawes and Nadia Comăneci in a commercial for Tide called "The Evolution of Power" prior to the 2016 Summer Olympics.
On August 7, Biles competed in the Women's Qualification at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She scored a 16.050 on the vault, a 15.000 on the uneven bars, a 15.633 on the balance beam, and a 15.733 on the floor exercise. Along with the team final, she individually qualified into the all-around, vault, balance beam, and floor exercise finals. On August 9, Biles won her first Olympic gold medal in the gymnastics team event. She also won the gold medal individual all-around on August 11, with teammate Aly Raisman winning the silver and Russia's Aliya Mustafina claiming the bronze. Biles had a total score of 62.198 with 15.866 on the vault, 14.966 on the uneven bars, 15.433 on the balance beam, and 15.933 on the floor. Biles had the highest scores on vault, balance beam, and floor; she had the only score over 15 on balance beam in the finals. In the women's vault, she won her second individual gold medal with a score of 15.966, more than 0.7 points ahead of second-place finisher Maria Paseka of Russia and third-place finisher Giulia Steingruber of Switzerland. In the women's balance beam final, she grabbed the beam, scoring a 14.733. Despite her mistake, wobbly routines from France's Marine Boyer, Brazil's Flavia Saraiva, China's Fan Yilin, Romania's Catalina Ponor, and Canadian Isabela Onyshko allowed her to grab bronze behind teammate Laurie Hernandez who won silver and Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands. In the women's floor exercise final, she won gold with a score of 15.966. Teammate Aly Raisman won silver with a score of 15.500 and Amy Tinkler of Great Britain won bronze. She contributed to an historic feat for the gymnastics team, with USA claiming a medal on every event for the first time since 1984.
With four Olympic gold medals, Biles set a new American record for most gold medals in women’s gymnastics at a single Games, and equalled a number of other records with her medals won in Rio. Biles' win of four gold medals was the first instance of a quadruple gold medallist in women's gymnastics at a single Games since Ecaterina Szabo (Romania) in 1984, and the fifth overall, after Larisa Latynina (USSR, 1956), Agnes Keleti ( HUN, 1956), Věra Čáslavská (CZE, 1968) and Szabo. Biles became the sixth female gymnast to have won an individual all-around title at both the World Championships and the Olympic Games; the others being Larisa Latynina, Věra Čáslavská, Ludmilla Tourischeva, Elena Shushunova and Lilia Podkopayeva. Biles is the first female gymnast since Lilia Podkopayeva (UKR) in 1996 to win the all around gold as well as an event final gold, and the first female gymnast since Podkopayeva to win the Olympic all around title while holding the World and European/American individual all around titles. Biles joins Latynina (1956–1960), Čáslavská (1964–1968) and Tourischeva (1968–1972), as the fourth female gymnast to win every major all-around title in an Olympic cycle.
Biles now joins Mary Lou Retton in 1984, Shannon Miller in 1992 and Nastia Liukin in 2008 in winning five medals at a single Olympic Games, along with Szabo (ROM, 1984), Nadia Comaneci (ROM, 1976) and Karin Janz (East Germany, 1972). Olga Mostepanova (USSR) also won five gold medals at the Alternate Olympics in 1984. The overall record for most women's Olympic gymnastics medals at a single games (majority gold), remains six medals (Latynina, 1956, 1960 and 1964, Keleti, 1956, Caslavska, 1968, Daniela Silivas, 1988).
Biles and her teammate Gabby Douglas are the only American female gymnasts to win both the individual all-around gold and team gold at the same Olympic games. Douglas won both in the 2012 London games.
She was chosen by Team USA to be the flag bearer for the closing ceremonies. She was the first American female gymnast to be given the honor.
