Family Time
Family Time sadly, is becoming more and more uncommon. I remember growing up and sitting together to eat dinner. We held hands and said grace, during special holidays we would even share what we were thankful for. We would play games and my sister was good for hiding Uno cards. I’m not saying she was cheating, but she sure called Uno often. My Mom played the piano and being that we had a Hammond organ in the living room, we would sit around as she would play and we would sing songs. My brother would visit and he would play and we would sing. The dream was to have a group. My brother would wear a red suit and have on white cotton socks. The ladies, you know laughing at my brother’s outfit we never decided on what we would wear.
We sat around and put puzzles together, watched movies together, played games together and prayed together. In my line of work, I encounter families often and when inquiring what they do for family time, I don’t always hear a lot of responses. Now some families go on trips together, engage together and you know that they are bonded. While others sometimes are around each other but are not aware of each other.
Prime example, the other day Chozen Counselors hosted their 2nd Annual Back to School Night. During this event families are encouraged to play games with each other. A meal is also provided as the family is at one table and can chat and chew. Worksheets on asking your child how their day was and activities to do with your children are provided. One family that attended, the mother was not really engaged. She stepped out to use the telephone and didn’t come back for some time. The children were well mannered and behaved themselves and anxiously waited for the time when they could choose the game of their choice to take home. When the mother came back into the event, she was hesitant in joining in on the activities as she reported that the event was for them.
As the evening concluded, families were also presented with a baking gift so that the family could continue family time at home. One child in attendance was confused as staff shared that he could bake the cookies with his Mom as he shared that his Mom probably would not do it with him. This saddened me yet also brought me encouragement to keep doing activities like this.
What we teach our children, they do with their children. I am excited to one day create a bond with my children were we will have random outfits. I am excited to create lasting memories to show my children that beyond the basic necessities of life I have time for you. When I say basic necessities I am referring to the child having a roof over their head, food to eat, clothes to wear, connected to education, and medically up to date. These activities show love, but by going beyond you spend T.I.M.E. with them. Talk to and Teach them of new things. Ignite life changing ideas and letting them know that the sky is the limit. Make Memories that will last a lifetime. Let each experience be exciting.
I shared that my Mom played the piano. This gift caused her to be at my school more than I would have liked…initially. She would come and play for assemblies and the Principal, Dr. Foxworth (Daroff Elementary) would always have a special announcement thanking my Mom for coming. I smile when I reflect now, because how many parents are offering to volunteer to assist at an assembly? Not as many as there could be. My Mom faithfully brought cakes to school to celebrate my birthday. I don’t think my school birthday celebrations stopped until maybe 5th grade and that was only because my Mom fell ill.
If only I could go back in time and thank her for sacrificing the time to show me love beyond the basic necessities. Family Time does not require much. I encourage everyone reading this to do more with your children. In the day and time we are living in, time is short. Every day the news reports of someone being harmed or gone to soon. Share with your loved ones that you love them…beyond the necessities of life.

Must be nice having a teenager life even after becoming a parent! Always going to hang out with your friends and never feeling obligations or simply the need of spending time with your child! Like at least taking your child out for bike ride! Actually I dont care about hanging out with friends or having hobbies because I rather be with my child ! #growthefuckup #spendtimewithyourkid #spendtimewithyourfamily #stopbeingimmature #lifeisnolongeraboutyouonly #getoffyourphoneandplaywithyourchild #spendtimewithyourchildnotwithyourfriends
