What is a Tweeter Speaker and What They Do?
A tweeter is a speaker that produces the upper range of sounds heard in music. Because higher sound frequencies have smaller sound waves, their size is smaller than other speakers they work with.
A tweeter speaker is a type of electromechanical loudspeaker that produces sound and music in the upper (higher frequency) musical range. Compensates for woofers and other speakers that do not produce treble, such as those used in two-way bookshelf speaker pair designs.
Tweeters are small because they produce smaller sound waves and have smaller cones. Generally speaking, it is best used when facing the listener.
It depends on the limitations of your particular speaker, but most are limited to a specific range, such as a maximum of 3 kHz to 20 kHz. The typical human hearing range is approximately 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
Kilohertz is a term used to describe the sound frequency produced or audio signal waveform cycles per second.
Tumblr media
Basic Tweeter Parts
Image of a disassembled car tweeter. A magnet assembly (left) and a dome/grill/wiring terminal assembly (right) are shown. The voice coil is attached to the dome in the rear. In this image, silver material is used to make a dome. Most are mylar or other types of plastic or other lightweight materials.
A typical tweeter design (although many other types exist) consists of a small magnet with a circular gap inside. A coiled copper wire voice coil, called a voice coil, is attached to a speaker dome made of one of a variety of materials. It differs from other speakers that use downward-angled cones in that they use a curved dome shape that curves outward.
This assembly is inserted into the gap in the magnet and suspended. The dome, like any other loudspeaker, is flexible but supported on the sides by a rigid material.
What Does Twitter Do?
Good quality tweeters are used to create high-frequency sound (treble) and compensate for other speakers that are not suited to it. It sounds fantastic even when it's part of an affordable audio system with a subwoofer and two-way speakers.
"Treble" is a word used to describe parts of music with an upper register, such as cymbals, synthesized keyboard sounds, drum effects, and the "tssst tsst" (treble) sound of various instruments.
When the amplified music signal is applied to the tweeter via the positive (+) and negative (-) wire connections, the voice coil creates a magnetic field inside the permanent magnetic gap region of the magnet.
This changing magnetic field causes the tweeter coil and dome to move back and forth, moving the air along the signal very quickly. When this happens, a sound is produced.
How is Twitter Used?
Designed to match drivers and discrete sound production, send them what suits them best.
Tweeters are used in speaker systems for a limited number of reasons (not used alone).
Produces sound that no other speaker can produce in a 2-way or 3-way speaker system.
To add more high-frequency sounds (treble) for added effect
Most speaker systems in use today are called "2-way" because they use a combination of two speakers that provide a limited range of sounds to produce. Very few speakers are sold today as single cones, so they cannot produce the full range of audible sound.
The main reason for this is that larger speakers do not produce higher (treble) frequencies as well, and smaller speakers do not produce louder (bass) frequencies.
Typically, speakers are specialized and best suited for a wide variety of sounds.
Midrange speakers, such as woofers (also called "midbass" speakers or "midwoofers"), generally perform terribly in the high registers.
Tweeters in India are therefore very important in providing the missing sound range.

Rolling Stone revamped their top 500 albums of all time list and of the new version I’ve listened to about half (I counted Meet the Beatles though technically I haven’t listened to that version, just With the Beatles and the misc singles they cobbled to make it. This parenthesis went longer than expected). Typical list fashion it’s questionable, but as far as modern lists go, it’s much better than you’d think. Thoughts below the cuts because I know it’s only mildly interesting.
Top 10 still skews old, but we at least have some albums out there that are less than 40 years old. Though it shoulda been In Utero instead of Nevermind up there.
That said, I get why lists of these nature tend to skew old. The methodology is opaque at best, but still, influence clearly counts, and you can’t judge without time. Also, there’s something to be said about art that hits in the moment, but ages fast. Which brings me to...
I long for the day when we collectively get over MBDTF. I don’t think hyper specific lyrics are inherently a negative, but I can’t imagine young people in 10 years are gonna get much out of “choke a south park writer with a fish stick”. The thing supporting the album long term is the music, and even that takes a sharp decline after Monster. Runaway was always bad. Power still rules. Anyway, I we were all expecting this to show up and it’s actually a sign of restraint that it just missed the top 10.
Also, all the pre-Trump Kanye albums were listed, not including Watch the Throne and Cruel Summer. Honestly, I’m surprised Graduation and Yeezus made it, even if the latter is his best work.
Speaking of, the two Taylor entries make sense.
The three big Kendrick albums are all there, and all in the top half. Sounds right.
I think it was just the two Beyonce albums on the list, which they had to be there. Rejoice though, Beyonce has clearly triumphed over Beck, who only had one album on this list and of course it wasn’t Morning Phase.
Speaking of, 4 out of the 10 Grammy AOTY from the last decade made it.
That album Harry Styles dropped last year is on the list so clearly they’re less concerned with sticking the critic’s canon. Norman Fucking Rockwell is there, too, and that makes more sense.
Dilla and Madlib’s most famous albums made it. Good for them!
Lose the Stooges, add Raw Power.
Metal, despite being one of the most internationally popular genres of music, is typically disrespected in these lists and this one is no different. First three Sabbath albums, the two Metallica albums people know, and Ace of Spades. That’s it. Absolutely nothing from after 1990.
The flip side of that is, absolutely no nu metal. I was expecting Toxicity to maybe make the cut, but even that’s MIA.
Also, lol you knew the state of Industrial on here, though is it naive of me to think Death Grips would be on here? Also, PHM is still overrated, but I’m glad this list recognizes that the Downward Spiral is the superior album. And one of these days we’ll get Skuppy on these lists.
Electronic music in general is pretty unrepresented outside of the synthier pop and rap acts. But Suicide’s on the list so that’s neat. I think there was only one Kraftwerk album? In general, the highest ranked electronic album is Kid A. But also, Kid A higher than OK Computer(!)
Does anyone revisit the first two Eminem albums that often? If I made this list, things would be different around here...
Couple Lil Wayne entries, and yeah I would definitely include him BUT. I think the focus on his album-albums betrays a still limited mindset on what can be considered a classic album. What Lil Wayne did with the mixtape ended up being way more interesting and influential than anything on the the Carter albums.
Aquemini? Definitely. Stankonia? Sure. But SpeakerLove???
We basically knew it was gonna happen since 2006, but MCR has been definitively accepted into the pantheon of classic recording artists.
They picked the wrong Gaga album. Fame Monster the only way to go.
Three Fiona Apple albums, that’s cool.
I get Ready to Die, but Life After Death? Also I think Biggie and Joy Division may be unique in having 100% of their albums represented. I guess Billy Eilish, but I think there’s a reasonable expectation we’ll get more music from her. Idk I’m probably missing someone else famously gone too soon. I guess technically the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but I think we all count that within the context of Jimi’s full recorded output. Oh D’Angelo! That’s crazy, good for him! Who knows if we’ll get more D’Angelo though.
A lot of Neo Soul, which definitely seems on brand for Rolling Stone these days. Still not re-evaluating MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 though.
Amy Winehouse is in the top 50???
The Clash album where they rap is on here.
I love all five Police albums, but if you’re only gonna pick one, I woulda went with the debut. I get the logic with going with Synchronicity, but it really isn’t the bands best or most representative work.
I would throw on more Miles. They got Kind of Blue and Bitches Brew, but that’s all. You wanna shake up the canon? Throw Get Up With It on there.
On paper it sounds like an album I would love, but Wowee Zowee has just never done it for me. Kinda shocked its here (and higher than Crooked Rain!) and we don’t have anything by Soundgarden or something.
Rid of Me and Stories from the Cities... but where’s Dry?
Desire got cut. I love that album, but that’s no surprise. Bob Dylan still has the second most albums of anyone, so he’s not exactly fallen on hard times.
Bowie’s all over this, too, but notably Blackstar isn’t. I agree with that, but still found it a little surprising since for a while that was the critical darling.
The OG version of this list had Pet Sounds at #2 because of its influence on the #1 pick, Sgt. Peppers. Sgt Peppers isn’t #1 anymore. It isn’t even the highest rated Beatles album on the list. But Pet Sounds is still at #2 which is pretty cool and I think a keen observation. Even on here people really seem to jive with that album and you can totally see why it’s endured.
Speaking of the Beatles, yeah they’re still the most represented, which fine, but I woulda put Revolver highest of their catalog.
What’s Going On is #1. That’s a solid pick and an album I need to listen to more.
Oh yeah it’s still like 70% US artists, 25% UK.
John Mayer... Coldplay... Tame Impala...wack
Finally, here are a few notable absences that I think could have realistically been on there.
Kate Bush - The Dreaming Aphex Twin - SAW85-92 (or SAWII, or Richard D. James Album, or even Syro honestly) Miles Davis - On the Corner David Bowie - “Heroes” (though let’s be real, Bowie’s not exactly hurting for representation on here) Death Grips - The Money Store St Vincent - St Vincent (or anything really) Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention - Freak Out! (Or again, anything) Janelle Monáe - The Electric Lady (...or anything) Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell (or even Bat Out of Hell II. Not Bat Out of Hell III lol) Mitski - Be the Cowboy Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese (it could happen!) Boston - Boston Run the Jewels - RTJ2 Garbage - Garbage basically any southern rap album not by Outkast Skinny Puppy - VIVIsectVI (and I’ll keep saying it!) More Kraftwerk Joshua Rifkin - Scott Joplin: Piano Rags King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King Talk Talk - Laughing Stock Gil Scott-Heron - Piece of a Man (i’m getting tired of saying this... or anything)

The magic behind every great speaker lies in its voice coil.
The magic behind every great speaker lies in its voice coil. This critical component, which you’ll find in high-end speakers like B&W, KEF, and Klipsch, transforms electrical signals into mesmerizing sound waves. Voice coils sit at the heart of the speaker, working with the magnet to create a magnetic field. When current flows, it activates the coil, moving the speaker’s cone and producing sound. The precision of this movement is what creates those crystal-clear highs and rich lows you crave.
At loudspeakerrepair.com, we specialize in restoring and repairing voice coils for beloved speakers. Over time, voice coils can weaken, affecting sound quality. That's where our expertise comes in! We handle repairs for classic models like the B&W Nautilus and Klipsch Heresy, ensuring each speaker returns to its peak audio performance.
Whether it's a burnt coil or a weakened structure, our repairs revive your speaker’s original sound without sacrificing quality. Our dedicated team uses advanced tools to maintain that unique sound characteristic each brand is known for. Restore the integrity of your high-end speakers with our trusted services. Visit us at www.loudspeakerrepair.com and keep your sound alive!

The key to great sound isn’t just in your speakers or amplifier – it’s in the balance between them. Speaker impedance plays a crucial role in how your audio system performs. Impedance refers to the resistance your speakers provide to the electrical current from the amplifier. When the impedance is mismatched, your sound quality suffers. At www.loudspeakerrepair.com, we specialize in repairing high-end speakers like the B&W 801 S3 and KEF 107, ensuring that their impedance is correctly tuned for optimal performance. If you’ve noticed your speakers aren’t delivering the crisp, clean sound you expect, it may be due to an impedance issue. Our team of audio experts will fine-tune your speakers to match your amplifier, bringing your sound system back to life. Don’t settle for less when it comes to sound quality – trust the professionals at www.loudspeakerrepair.com to get your speakers working in perfect harmony with your setup. #SpeakerRepair #ImpedanceIssues #AudioQuality #LoudspeakerRepair
