To Revive a Dying Main Street, One British Landlord Offered Free Rent
For two decades, Steven Wyatt was in a cycle of drug addiction and rehab. In 2006, during a stint at a recovery center, he learned how to restore furniture, a skill that led him to an unexpected place: running his own store in Poole, a coastal town in southwest England.Mr. Wyatt, 46, is among a handful of beneficiaries of an unusual experiment in real estate and urban renewal. At times, he painted furniture in his garden and sold the pieces on eBay.Since opening his shop, he has sold more than a thousand pieces. In 1916, Miller lost out to S. C. Contracting Co. to improve “2.21 miles of Beverly road and Scenic road, known as road improvement district No. 126, under the 1907 Act” (“Shots from the Firing Line,” Excavating Contractor, Volumes 13-14, A.B. Morse Company, 1916).
In March 1917, Miller was the contractor for highway construction in the city of Riverside, CA (Southwest Builder and Contractor, Volume 50, F. W. Dodge Company, 1917).
In October 1917, Miller lost a bid for “constructing concrete pavement, cement sidewalks, and cement curbs in Nautilus court, Billows court, White Caps court, Progress Club court, Strand court, Lake View court, and Strand avenue in Venice, CA but won the contract “for grading and constructing a 16-ft. concrete pavement on Section 3 of the Santa Ana Canyon road in Orange county.” I haven’t seen this before but in November of the same year, there is a notice that for a “concrete base on existing payment” in Buena Park, all bids were rejected, including Miller’s. BRT could have and will have a bright future in Cincinnati because there are currently plans to introduce the system along two corridors in the Cincinnati area. These, along with any future planned lines, will connect the areas where people work and live in a faster and more efficient way than the current public transit system in place, which is buses.

Above are the planned corridors in the Cincinnati area. The Reading Road corridor and the Hamilton Avenue corridor have been approved and the city is going to begin construction here shortly. The plan is a collaboration between Metro and Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA). This will be better for the area of Cincinnati as the current system of buses takes a long time to arrive at the destination due to frequent stops, payment locations, dealing with traffic, and dealing with stoplights. Until public transportation takes close to the same amount of time as driving might, there will be very little incentive for the average Cincinnatian to take it. BRT will likely begin to fix this dilemma by cutting down on the amount of time it takes to get between destinations.
Streetcars (Sam) As previously stated, Cincinnati used to be brimming with streetcars along every major artery of the city, but by the 50’s they were all phased out and the lines paved over. In 2016, the Cincinnati Bell Connector began operation, being a three-and-a-half-mile loop that serves the Downtown and Over-the-Rhine communities. This loop is a good start to something that could be great, and here’s how:
In the original proposal that passed in 2008, the streetcar loop was intended to go up the hill into Cincy’s Uptown neighborhoods, providing access to the University of Cincinnati, the medical campus of the university, and the zoo. It was scraped once state funding was pulled, but implementing this route is vital to increasing the efficiency and usage of the streetcar system, as it would connect all the university students to downtown to get to their co-ops, provide all the residents of OTR access to a major ‘pull’ attraction in the zoo, and gets pedestrians access to the university hospitals. It would be a huge improvement to the current system. There has also been a lot of interest in taking the streetcar over the People Bridge and into Newport, and this should also be implemented to give Newport residents easy access to downtown, where many of them work. Expanding the streetcar to more people and not just those who live downtown is critical.
Metro (Johnny) Metro systems are the highest capacity systems a city can invest in. They are trains that operate completely or mostly garde separated at high frequency making them the fastest form of city transportation. It's important that Cincinnati invests in a metro system to increase capacity on our most ridden transit corridors. Metro systems also provide the quickest and most comfortable rides public transit can provide. Cincinnati could also develop transit-oriented development around these metro corridors.
