The Holocene began approximately 11,700 years ago after the last glacial period. With the Pleistocene, it forms the Quaternary period, which started 2,580,000 years ago and contains all the time when recognizable human species existed on the Earth. The Quaternary is part of the Cenozoic Era along with the Neogene and the Paleogene, which started 66,000,000 years ago and is characterized by mammals becoming the dominant life forms on Earth.
The Holocene corresponds to the rapid spread of humans, all of written human history, technological revolutions, the development of major civilizations. The rise and fall of empires, of cities, of nations are all contained in the Holocene. All the battles and wars and treaties, everything we can know about from the words of people who were there is contained in the Holocene.

Ice cores and the analysis of marine chemical fluxes show that the climate has been fairly stable over the world, but there have been local (some on the scale of the Sahara) changes, but these changes have seemingly been off-set by changes in the climate of another area (such as increasing or decreasing glaciation of the North Atlantic). Another important contributor to the relative stability of the climate, until about 200 years ago, was humans using land for agriculture helped prevent the cycle of significant cooling and glaciation from occurring during this time. The stable climate also likely contributed to humans settling into agrarian and settled civilizations.
At the beginning of the Holocene, the Sahara was a savanna with many large lakes across it during a time period known as the African Humid Period, which saw tropical rain patterns shifted north. This lush landscape probably contributed to an increase in pastoralism in Africa. About 5,500 years ago, the rains started moving south, causing the Sahara to become the desert it is today. This also caused people to move southward or toward the Nile River to find water.

The largest climate fluctuation before the present, though, was the 8.2-kiloyear event, which happened 8,200 years ago, or 6200 BCE, and was thought to have occurred because the Laurentied Ice Sheet on North America collapsed, dumping a bunch of cold water into the North Atlantic Ocean. This slowed the northern movement of heat on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Cold water also holds onto carbon dioxide better than warmer water, which may have led to a decrease in CO2 of 25 parts per million over the course of about 300 years. This also caused a rise in sea level in addition to the post-glacial seasonal changes that were more extreme the further from the Hudson Bay area the location was, perhaps leading to Flood Myths.

Another named climate fluctuation is the 4.2-kiloyear event, or the 4.2-kiloyear BP aridification event, which was a drought that affected many areas across the world for about a hundred years from 2200 BCE. While we know both from written historical records as well as glacier cores what happened, the exact cause hasn't been pinpointed as it has for the 8.2-kiloyear event. We do know that the AMOC weakened, which shifted precipitation. There's evidence that the El Niño–Southern Oscillation played a role in the changes. There are some suggestions that volcanic eruptions on Iceland may have had a part, but because Iceland's volcanoes have a low sulfur content, it's hard to know for sure.

Some other climate events that stand out prior to the Industrial Revolution are still relatively mild compared to previous time periods in Earth's history. From the 10th-14th centuries CE, there was a slightly warmer period of time, similar to the climate just before the Industrial Revolution, which was approximately 1°C warmer than a period called the Little Ice Age that happened following it in the 14th-mid 19th centuries CE.

Is Denver Water Safe To Drink in [year]? (According To Data)
Tumblr media
Keen to learn about Denver's water quality? Is Denver's tap water safe to drink, and how does it compare to the water in other cities? Are there any contaminants in Denver's drinking water that you should know about? We've answered all these questions and more in this Denver drinking water quality and safety guide. 📌 Key Takeaways: - Denver tap water is treated and disinfected to make it safe to drink. - All public water treatment facilities in Denver must adhere to regulations and standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). - In Denver's tap water, the major contaminants of concern are arsenic, disinfection byproducts, and radium. 🚰 Can You Drink Denver Tap Water? Yes, it's generally safe to drink Denver tap water because it's filtered and disinfected to remove microorganisms that could make you sick. Plus, the water treatment plants in Denver must comply with EPA guidelines for water quality and safety. There are a few trace contaminants found in the city's drinking water, but these contaminants don't exceed the EPA's Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs). However, many experts debate whether or not it's safe to drink tap water containing even trace amounts of impurities with known health concerns. For instance, the Environmental Working Group, an independent organization and activist group based in the US, believes that the EPA's standards for water quality are too low, and has set its own Health Guidelines - 11 of which are exceeded by the contaminants in Denver's tap water. It's important to note that the Guidelines set by the Environmental Working Group essentially mean nothing. Facilities must legally comply with the EPA's Drinking Water Standards, not the EWG's Guidelines. However, you may agree with the EWG's belief that the EPA's Maximum Contaminant Levels for certain health-harmful contaminants are too lenient. So, is Denver tap water safe to drink? Yes, according to the EPA standards, but no, according to the EWG guidelines. We've looked in more detail at the 11 contaminants breaking EWG guidelines in Denver water later in this guide. 👨‍🔧 Looking for more reading material? You might be interested in this post, which lists the states with the worst quality drinking water. 🗺️ Where Does the Tap Water in Denver Come From? The tap water in Denver comes from snowmelt from Colorado's Rocky Mountains range, as well as the South Platte River Basin and tributaries of the Colorado River. The entirety of this water is surface water. Water is collected in more than 4,000 square miles of foothills and mountains west of Denver, and is treated and delivered to 1.5 million people. The city has a large, diverse water collection system because snow isn't a 100% reliable water source - it's impossible to predict where the snow will fall, and how much. Around 94 billion gallons of surface water are collected by the Denver Water utility every year. This water is processed in several treatment stages, including coagulation, which causes contaminants to clump together and sink to the bottom of the treatment basin, and filtration, which removes fine particles. This clean water is then disinfected to prevent the formation of microorganisms like bacteria and viruses, and alkaline substances are added to raise pH and reduce corrosion in the water service lines. The water is also fluoridated before being delivered around the distribution system. 📉 Who Regulates Denver Tap Water? Tap water in Denver is managed by the Denver Water Board and regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Denver Water monitors tens of contaminants in the City's drinking water supply, adhering to the guidelines outlined in the EPA's National Primary Drinking Water Regulations. EPA's Standards, produced under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), highlight 6 groups of contaminants that all water facilities in the US, including Denver Water, must monitor and reduce in public drinking water supplies: - Disinfectants - Disinfection byproducts - Radionuclides - Microorganisms - Organic chemicals - Inorganic chemicals The EPA monitors water treatment facilities to ensure compliance with its regulations. If a water facility exceeds any of the EPA-regulated contaminants in its water supply, the facility will be required to take action against this problem - providing test results as proof of this action. 🧪 Denver Water Quality Report The most recent Water Quality Report (or Consumer Confidence Report) available for viewing online is the 2022 Report, which contains data collected from January-December 2021. It's one of the better reports we've seen - the information is clearly presented there are no unexplained abbreviations. According to the report, none of the detected contaminants present in the treated water violated the EPA's MCLS. Many contaminants, like arsenic, mercury, selenium, and uranium, were detected on average at a BRL - below reporting level - which is good news for consumers. Some contaminants were detected in trace amounts (although still lower than the EPA's MCLs), including barium, chromium, fluoride, nitrate, and nickel. Note that this water quality report doesn't account for lead in water that may have entered through lead water service lines. Denver recently introduced the Lead Reduction Program Plan, which aims to replace all lead service lines and control lead corrosion with pH treatment, but this doesn't prevent lead contamination from customer-owned lead pipes, and many lead pipes currently remain in the City. We recommend taking a look at the Denver Water Quality Report and familiarizing yourself with the contaminants present and how they compare to national standards. ☣️ Contaminants Found Above Guidelines in Tap Water in Denver According to the latest Consumer Confidence Report for Denver's public water supply, no contaminants present in the water exceed the EPA's legal limit. So, in this section of the guide, we've focused on which contaminants in Denver tap water exceed the more stringent guidelines set by the EWG (which, as a reminder, are simply guidelines and aren't legally enforceable). According to the EWG Tap Water Database for Denver, 11 contaminants in water treated by the Denver utility exceed the EWG's Health Guidelines from January 2021-March 2021. These contaminants are: Arsenic The EWG has set a recommended Health Guideline for arsenic of 0.004 PPB (parts per billion). 0.0273 PPB of this highly toxic contaminant was found in Denver's drinking water - that's 6.8x the recommended Health Guideline. However, this is nowhere near the EPA's official legal limit for arsenic of 10 PPB. Disinfection Byproducts Since Denver's water is, for the most part, naturally clean, the main group of contaminants found in the treated drinking water was disinfection byproducts. These include: - Bromodichloromethane - Chloroform - Dibromoacetic acid - Dibromochloromethane - Dichloroacetic acid - Haloacetic acids (HAA5)† - Haloacetic acids (HAA9)† - Total trihalomethanes (TTHMs)† - Trichloroacetic acid The most well-known disinfection byproducts of this list are chloroform, haloacetic acids (HAA5)†, haloacetic acids (HAA9)†, and total trihalomethanes (TTHMs)†. Disinfection byproducts are carcinogenic, meaning that they pose a cancer risk. They're formed when disinfectants such as chlorine react with organic materials naturally present in the water, and are often more dangerous than the disinfectant itself. Between 0.260 PPB and 23.0 PPB of disinfection byproducts were detected in Denver's water - between 6.5x and 246x the EWG's recommended Health Guideline, depending on the contaminant in question. Radium 0.33 pCi/L (picoCurie per liter) of radium - a naturally occurring radioactive element that may damage the immune system and increase the risk of cancer when consumed in large quantities - was detected in Denver's tap water. This is 6.7x the EWG's recommended Health Guideline of 0.05 pCi/L, but well under the EPA's legal limit of 5 pCi/L. 🧫 Main Contaminants Found in Denver Tap Water So, we know which contaminants the EWG thinks are present in dangerous amounts in Denver tap water, but are there any other contaminants present at levels that don't have human health effects? According to the EWG Tap Water Database for the City, there are a total of 34 total contaminants detected in Denver's public water. These include: - Antimony - A chemical element that may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if ingested in very high quantities. - Barium - A naturally occurring metal most commonly found in well water, which may cause vomiting, muscle weakness, abdominal cramps, and blood pressure changes if consumed in excess, or changes of heart rhythm and paralysis if ingested in very large amounts. - Cadmium - An extremely toxic heavy metal that gets into water as a result of pollution from items containing cadmium. Even low-level cadmium exposure may cause a decrease in bone density and disrupted bone composition. - Hexavalent chromium - The most dangerous common form of chromium, also known as chromium-6. Consuming high levels of chromium-6 in water may cause various cancers, liver and kidney damage, and eye irritation. - Fluoride - Although Denver's water naturally contains low levels of fluoride, the state also fluoridates its water for dental health benefits. Large amounts of fluoride in drinking water can cause dental fluorosis (which stains the teeth) and a metabolic bone disease called skeletal fluorosis. - Nitrate and nitrite - Two common forms of nitrogen that often contaminate water supplies due to pollution from municipal wastewater treatment plants and agricultural or urban runoff. In excess, nitrates and nitrites may cause a condition called methemoglobinemia, which hinders the blood's ability to carry oxygen. - Selenium - A naturally occurring mineral that may cause hair or fingernail loss and circulation problems if prolonged exposure occurs. - Uranium - A radioactive heavy metal with carcinogenic effects. 🏢 Denver Drinking Water in Public Places We know about the tap water quality in Denver, but what about the water you'll receive in public places, like bars, hotels, and restaurants? The water in these locations is usually the same tap water that you'd get at home. Restaurants and bars aren't legally required to provide free tap water to customers - and, in fact, Denver has issues with drought, so most restaurants probably won't offer you water unless you specifically ask for it. Hotel rooms also offer free drinking water, although some may use recycled water that isn't safe for drinking (there should be a warning sign near the faucet if so). If your hotel tap water isn't accessible or safe to drink, you should still get free water if you ask at the hotel bar or reception. There are more than 100 water fountains in the City, so it's worth bringing a reusable water bottle with you rather than buying bottled water. However, if you do want to buy bottled water, you'll find plenty at your local grocery store from popular bottled water brands like Dasani, Evian, Pure Life, Smartwater, and Aquafina. 👨‍🔧 Related content: - Is Tap Water Safe to Drink Around the US? 💬 Frequently Asked Questions Is Denver tap water hard or soft? The water hardness in Denver varies from region to region. There are two collection points at Denver's largest water treatment center. The northern collection point has 40 to 50 mg/L water hardness, which is classed as soft water. The southern collection point has 75 to 120 mg/L water hardness, which is classed as moderately hard water. All of Denver's water is sourced from surface water in mountain reservoirs, which is generally softer than groundwater because its dissolved minerals content is lower. Is Denver tap water safe to drink? Yes, according to the latest of Denver's annual Consumer Confidence reports, the City's water is safe to drink and doesn't pose a public health risk. No contaminants in the water were detected above the Maximum Contaminant Levels set by the EPA. However, many Denver water customers choose to treat their water with water filters before drinking because they'd rather not drink even trace amounts of certain health-harmful contaminants. Why is Denver Water so good? Denver's water is sourced from high-quality mountain snow in the Rocky Mountains, which is the main reason why it's considered better than many other city water supplies in the United States. Even the untreated water in Denver contains low levels of contaminants, and this water doesn't need extensive treatment to make it safe for drinking. However, there are still trace amounts of contaminants like arsenic, radium, and disinfection byproducts in Denver's water system. Does Denver Water have lead? Yes, some of Denver's drinking water has lead, a known human carcinogen that is extremely dangerous even in small amounts. However, Denver is currently in the process of replacing all its lead water service lines in an effort to reduce its water lead content. If you live in Denver and you're concerned about lead in your water, conduct a water test. Read the full article

Nebraska state flag re-redesign
from /r/vexillology Top comment: A while ago I published [another redesign for Nebraska](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/iionya/state_flag_redesign_for_nebraska_usa/) that was not very well received because of the six-pointed star. This week, inspired by [another redesign](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/l4qytv/nebraska_state_flag_redesign/) posted by u/NxMaGiiCz, I decided to work more on my old flag, now using a circular format. Meaning: **Y-shape:** represents the Platte River and its North and South branches **Gold circle:** the circular format is present in a lot of symbols of Nebraska - the [Nebraska's windmill](https://mediad.publicbroadcasting.net/p/kcbx/files/styles/x_large/public/201609/dempster_windmill_in_nebraska.jpg) (symbol of agriculture), the [wagon wheel](https://customwagonwheels.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Best-Chandelier-wagon-wheel-1-scaled.jpg) (symbol of the expansion to the west), the [corn](https://c8.alamy.com/comp/H0A2GA/corn-ob-with-grains-cross-section-on-the-stalk-H0A2GA.jpg) (once NE is the "Cornhusker State"), the [goldenrod](https://lizzieharper.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Canadian-Goldenrod-Solidago-canadensis-sketchbook-study-page-1-scaled.jpg) (state flower). So here the gold circle represent all this wealth the land provides. **Color scheme** (blue, gold and white): based on the [current state flag](https://statesymbolsusa.org/symbol-official-item/nebraska/state-flag/flag-nebraska) color scheme. **White star**: represents statehood !wave

Actually, high German IS the southern dialects. The written language should be referred to as „standard german“. It’s just a question of using the right term, but most people use these as the same (they are not). Grüße von einer Germanistik Studentin :)
//I guess that is kinda true. The standard German which is referred to as High German is formed from the Southern Dialects back in the day (we’re talking a few centuries ago). Martin Luther wrote the first German translation of the Bible mostly in his own (SAXON!!) dialect with of course bits and pieces from the other dialects - because he wanted everyone to understand it! That was the start of the formation of High German. It went from Mittelhochdeutsch to Frühneuhochdeutsch somewhere between the 17th and 18th century if I remember correctly. The Neuhochdeutsch, what we speak today, formed during the 19th century and it was also in that time it got more consistent and uniform.
Eventually the High German crept up from the South to the North, where people only talked Plattdeutsch and other similar dialects that sound a lot like Dutch actually (no surprise here). But High German was seen as a more prestigious dialect and you had to learn it to be able to do any sort of education up there. And thus High German drove the Plattdeutsch away.
Many people in the North don’t speak any dialect today, but in fact some things from the Platt have merged with the High German (mostly things like saying “ ‘ne” instead of “eine” or something).
Tbh I never heard the term “standard German” and I am a graduated Germanistik Student with a masters in German history.
Of course written language is always different than spoken, but I’m pretty sure Hochdeutsch is the standard German. And saying it actually is the southern German dialects seems inaccurate to me.
I don’t mean to come voer rude, I’m just a simple academic trying to get facts right. And felt like using some fancy words.

Excerpt from this National Geographic story:
Around a hundred million years ago, what is now Nebraska’s tranquil prairie was covered by a vast sea, where shark-like marine reptiles roamed. When the sea eventually retreated, it left salty rock formations in its wake, making the groundwater that gurgles from the wetlands around Lincoln, Nebraska, as salty as today’s oceans.
More than a thousand miles from any coast, the marshes are one of the only places in the United States where the naturally occurring water is saline. In addition to providing the flood protection wetlands are known for, they’re a refuge for species uniquely adapted to salty conditions.
But a hundred years of building roads, homes, stores, and offices in and around Lincoln, a city of more than 280,000, have filled in and carved up roughly 80 percent of the marshes. It’s estimated that nearly 20,000 acres of salt marsh once existed; today only 4,000 acres remain scattered throughout the region.
Of more than a million acres of wetland that dot Nebraska, the salt marshes around Lincoln are the most endangered. If these salt marshes disappear, so too will Nebraska’s reminder that their prairies were once dominated by the shallow seas of the Western Interior Seaway.
But conservationists say the once-neglected marshes are slowly but surely being recognized for the environmental asset they are.
Salt marshes are common in coastal states, but only in Nebraska and Kansas are they so far from any present-day ocean. The salt marshes that lie outside of Lincoln are contained within the Salt Creek watershed that covers the roughly 2,016 square miles around Salt Creek, a tributary of the Platte River. The unique landscape has produced species that can’t be found anywhere else on Earth, like the Salt Creek tiger beetle.
As the salt marshes slowly disappear, so do the beetle and endemic plants such as saltwort. Spomer estimates that only about 250 of the beetles are left.
In addition, Nebraska’s wetland, the salt marshes included, are an important stop for more than 200 species of birds as they migrate north every spring from as far away as South America. When the birds lose habitat, they’re forced to find alternate routes that are often longer, an adjustment scientists say threatens their survival.
The ecological beauty of this saline wetland is subdued, and for a long time its gradual disappearance attracted little notice.

Ryan Murphy hates the word “camp.” He sees it as a lazy catchall that gets thrown at gay artists in order to marginalize their ambitions, to frame their work as niche. “I don’t think that when John Waters made ‘Female Trouble’ that he was, like, ‘I want to make a camp piece,’ ” Murphy told me last May, as we sat in a production tent in South Beach, Florida, where he was directing the pilot of “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” a nine-episode series for FX. “I think that he was, like, ‘It’s my tone—and my tone is unique.’ ”
Murphy prefers a different label: “baroque.” Between shots, the showrunner—who has overseen a dozen television series in the past two decades—elaborated, with regal authority, on this idea. To Murphy, “camp” describes not irony but something closer to clumsiness, the accident you can’t look away from. People rarely use the term to describe a melodrama made by a straight man; even when “camp” is meant as a compliment, it contains an insult, suggesting a musty smallness. “Baroque” is big. Murphy, referring to TV critics (including me) who have applied “camp” to his work, said, “I will admit that it really used to bug the shit out of me. But it doesn’t anymore.”
We were outside the Casa Casuarina, the Mediterranean-style mansion that the Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace renovated and considered his masterwork—a building with airy courtyards and a pool inlaid with dizzy ribbons of red, orange, and yellow ceramic tiles. A small bronze statue of a kneeling Aphrodite stood at the top of the mansion’s front steps. In 1997, a young gay serial killer named Andrew Cunanan shot Versace to death there as the designer, who was fifty, was returning from his morning stroll.
The previous day, Murphy had filmed the murder scene. Cunanan was played by Darren Criss, a star of Murphy’s biggest hit, “Glee.” I’d visited the set that day, too, arriving to find ambulances, cops, and paparazzi swarming outside. There was a splash of red on the marble steps. Inside the house, Edgar Ramirez, the Venezuelan actor playing Versace, sat in a shaded courtyard, his hair caked with gun-wound makeup, his face lowered in his hands.
Now Murphy was filming the aftermath of the crime, including a scene in which two lookie-loos dip a copy of Vanity Fair into the puddle of Versace’s blood. (They sell the relic on eBay.) The vibe was an odd blend of sombre and festive; a half-naked rollerblader spun in slow circles on the sidewalk next to the beach. Murphy, who is fifty-three, is a stylish man, but on set he wore the middle-aged male showrunner’s uniform: baggy cargo shorts and a polo shirt. He has a rosebud mouth and close-cropped vanilla hair. He is five feet ten but has a brawny air of command, creating the illusion that he is much taller. His brother is six feet four, he told me, as was his late father; Murphy thinks that his own growth was stunted by chain-smoking when he was a rebellious teen-ager, in Indiana.
Murphy’s mood tends to shift unexpectedly, like a wonky thermostat—now warm, now icy—but on the “Versace” set he made one confident decision after another about the many shows he was overseeing, as if skipping stones. He also answered stray questions—about the casting for a Broadway revival of “The Boys in the Band” that he was producing, about a grand house in Los Angeles that he’d been renovating for two years. “Ooh, yes!” he said, inspecting penis-nosed clown masks that had been designed for his series “American Horror Story.” He approved a bespoke nail-polish design for an actress. A producer handed Murphy an updated script, joking, “If there’s a mistake, you can drown me in Versace’s pool!,” then scheduled a notes meeting for “American Crime Story: Katrina,” whose writers were working elsewhere in the building. Now and then, Murphy FaceTimed with his then four-year-old son, Logan, who, along with his two-year-old brother, Ford, was in L.A. with Murphy’s husband, David Miller.
“I never get overwhelmed or feel underwater, because I feel like all good things come from detail,” Murphy told me. It’s what got him to this point: the compulsion, and the craving, to do more. “Baroque is a sensibility I can get behind,” he said. “Baroque is a maximalist approach to storytelling that I’ve always liked. Baroque is a choice. And everything I do is an absolute choice.”
Murphy’s choices, perhaps more than those of any other showrunner, have upended the pieties of modern television. Like a wild guest at a dinner party, he’d lifted the table and slammed it back down, leaving the dishes broken or arranged in a new order. Several of Murphy’s shows have been critically divisive (and, on occasion, panned in ways that have raised his hackles). But he has produced an unusually long string of commercial and critical hits: audacious, funny-peculiar, joyfully destabilizing series, in nearly every genre. His run started with the satirical melodrama “Nip/Tuck” (2003), then continued with the global phenomenon “Glee” (2009) and with “American Horror Story,” now entering its eighth year, which launched the influential season-long anthology format. His legacy is not one standout show but, rather, the sheer force and variety and chutzpah of his creations, which are linked by a singular storytelling aesthetic: stylized extremity and rude humor, shock conjoined with sincerity, and serious themes wrapped in circus-bright packaging. He is the only television creator who could possibly have presented Lily Rabe as a Satan-possessed nun, gyrating in a red negligee in front of a crucifix while singing “You Don’t Own Me,” and have it come across as an indelible critique of the Catholic Church’s misogyny.
When Murphy entered the industry, he sometimes struck his peers as an aloof, prickly figure; he has deep wounds from those years, although he admits that he contributed to this reputation. Nonetheless, Murphy has moved steadily from the margins to television’s center. He changed; the industry changed; he changed the industry. In February, Murphy rose even higher, signing the largest deal in television history: a three-hundred-million-dollar, five-year contract with Netflix. For Murphy, it was a moment of both triumph and tension. You can’t be the underdog when you’re the most powerful man in TV.
On that sunny afternoon in South Beach, however, Murphy was still comfortably ensconced in a twelve-year deal with Fox Studios. On FX, which is owned by Fox, he had three anthology series: “American Horror Story”; “American Crime Story,” for which he was filming “Versace,” writing “Katrina,” and planning a season based on the Monica Lewinsky scandal; and “Feud,” whose first season starred Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis and Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford.
For Fox, he was developing “9-1-1,” a procedural about first responders. He had announced two shows for Netflix: “Ratched,” a nurse’s-eye view of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” starring Sarah Paulson; and “The Politician,” a satirical drama starring Ben Platt. Glenn Close was trying to talk him into directing her in a movie version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Sunset Boulevard.” Murphy was writing a book called “Ladies,” about female icons. He had launched Half, a foundation dedicated to diversity in directing, and had committed to hiring half of his directors from underrepresented groups. And, he told me, there was something new: a series for FX called “Pose,” a dance-filled show set in the nineteen-eighties.
It was no mystery which character in his current series Murphy most identified with: Gianni Versace himself. Versace was a commercially minded artist whose brash inventions were dismissed by know-nothings as tacky, and whose openness about his sexuality threatened his ascent in a homophobic era. Versace, too, was a baroque maximalist, Murphy told me, who built his reputation through fervid workaholism—an insistence that his vision be seen and understood. “He was punished and he struggled,” Murphy said, then spoke in Versace’s voice: “Why aren’t I loved for my excess? Why don’t they see something valid in that?”
[...] Murphy has long been a connoisseur of extremes and hyperbole, games and theatricality. He rates everything he sees and revels in institutions that do the same—the Oscars are a kind of religion for him. In Miami, at dinner with the “Katrina” and “Versace” writers, he played a high-stakes game in which he was forced to immediately choose one person in his circle over another; he demurred only when the choice was between Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson. His go-to question is “Is it a hit or a flop?,” and he asked it about every show that came up in conversation, as I observed him giving shape to “Pose,” from scouting locations to editing dance footage. (He has other stock phrases. “What’s the scoop?” is how he begins writers’ meetings. “Energy begets energy” explains his impulse to add new projects. “That’s interesting” sometimes indicates “That’s worth noticing” but just as often means “That’s infuriating.”)
[...] His multitasking benefits greatly from the freedoms of cable and streaming: he has zero nostalgia for the twenty-two-episode network grind of a show like “Glee,” in which “halfway through Episode 15 you had nothing left to say, the actors were sick, the writers were sick, and it was fucking oatmeal until the end.” He favors eight or ten episodes, often with a small writers’ room, as with “Pose.” He writes scripts for some shows, whereas for others he gives notes; on a few projects, like his HBO adaptation of Larry Kramer’s play “The Normal Heart,” he’s very hands-on. “We left blood on the dance floor,” Murphy said, affectionately, of his three-year collaboration with Kramer. “Versace” had one writer, Tom Rob Smith. But Murphy provided close directorial, design, and casting oversight, and he had a strong commitment to the show’s themes, particularly the contrast between Versace and Cunanan, two gay men craving success, but only one willing to work for it.
[...] In the meanwhile, Murphy had scored a ratings bonanza with Fox’s “9-1-1,” a wackadoo procedural featuring stories like one about a baby caught in a plumbing pipe. It was his parting gift to Dana Walden. “Versace” had been, by certain standards, a flop: lower ratings, mixed reviews. Artistically, though, it was one of Murphy’s boldest shows, with a backward chronology and a moving performance by Criss as Cunanan, a panicked dandy hollowed out by self-hatred. After the finale aired, a new set of reviews emerged. Matt Brennan, on Paste, argued that “Versace” had been subjected to “the straight glance”—a critical gaze that skims queer art, denying its depths. “Even critics sympathetic to the series seem as uncomfortable with its central subject as the Miami cops were with those South Beach fags,” Brennan wrote. Murphy was reading a new oral history of Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America,” in which, in one scene, Roy Cohn denies being gay because, he barks, homosexuals lack power: they are “men who know nobody and who nobody knows.” The line echoes one in “Versace.” A homeless junkie dying of aids tells the cops, bitterly, why gay men couldn’t stop talking about the designer: “We all imagined what it would be like to be so rich and so powerful that it doesn’t matter that you’re gay.”

Jonny Keeling, Scott Alexander: SIEBEN KONTINENTE, EIN PLANET. Einzigartige Naturwunder unserer Erde. Vorwort von David Attenborough, 1. Auflage 2020, Verlag: Frederking & Thaler, 29,99 Euro, https://verlagshaus24.de/frederking-thaler/

Bleiben wir gleich beim 7. Kontinent.

Hervé Neukomm, Thorsten Zahn, Till Lindemann, Joey Kelly: AMAZONAS. Reise zum Rio Javari; Fotos: Thomas Stachelhaus, Matthias Matthies, Bildband, Hardcover, 240 Seiten, Format 30 x 38 cm, 2,9 kg, 1. Auflage 2020, National Geographic Buchverlag, 79 Euro, https://verlagshaus24.de/national-geographic/
Tumblr media
Hans Sautter: JAPAN, Opulenter Bildband, Hardcover, 320 Seiten, Format 30 x 38 cm, 4,1 kg, 1. Auflage 2020, Verlag: Frederking & Thaler, 98 Euro, https://verlagshaus24.de/frederking-thaler/

IMPACT ON DIFFERENT LNG
TRANSPORTATION LNG
The lock-ins was at sights as a consequence of rising prices for shipping to global markets and fast breakeven shale economies in the Covid-19. Companies in the value chain will react quickly, evaluate their position in light of the current business climate and take advantage of the short and long-term opportunity to gain value.
For instance,
In March, the Platts Gulf Coast Marker, which reflects the economies of American exports of LNG, was down below the Henry Hub. The U.S. LNG also seems vulnerable in a crisis- Asian consumers will just incur the toll payment for the cancelation of the U.S. LNG freight, whereas the cancelation of Australian or Qatar LNG freight requires the whole shipment to be billed or charged.
INDUSTRIAL AND POWER LNG
Major market players, similar to other LNG import companies, look unstable, this is most likely due to the contraction in business growth will lead to short-term impacts in energy production and the manufacturing companies. Early indicators in Italy have shown that after social distancing initiatives have been introduced, demand in certain sectors could have decreased in impacted regions by over 10 percent. While low LNG prices will allow some opportunities to switch to fuel in the short run, the structural and temporary existence of demand for natural gas is likely to restrict any potential upside on many markets, in conjunction with a rapidly falling overall energy demand.

In conclusion, the effect of Covid-19 on the availability of LNG would continue much longer than the effects on global demand for LNG. The U.S. has been the new epicenter for the epidemic of COVID after the move from China to Europe, as the third most populated nation in the world and the biggest natural gas user, the implementation of restrictions to reduce the spread of COVID is expected to have a significant impact. Effects on the world demand for electricity due to freezing weather from mid-March until the end of April, the rise in usage was led by an improvement in increasing the gasoline prices in the residential and business market. Whereas throughout the industrial sector gas use has been very stable and over the span has risen marginally. The energy sector seems most affected by COVID, but despite a downward trend in electricity demand, has increased gas and renewable energy production, especially coal, is offsetting energy generation from many other sources.

10 to watch SPECIAL 24 in honor of Kobe Bryant 12720
We take a slight departure from our usual format this week to honor and celebrate the life and legend of Kobe Bryant, #24 forever.
--- Remembering Kobe Bryant, the statesman entrepreneur. USA Basketball chair and Sport Business Handbook contributor Jerry Colangelo, during an ESPN interview on Sunday, described himself as “shaken to the core” upon hearing the news that Bryant died in a helicopter crash on Sunday morning, and credited Bryant with leading Team USA to their gold medal Olympic performance in Beijing. “Gold Medal” perhaps best summarizes the span of Bryant’s all too short career. After his two-decade NBA run, Bryant dove into business with the same passion he had exhibited on the court. He started a business incubator and venture fund so that others could get their businesses off the ground. He wrote inspirational books for both children and adults. He made a highly-regarded documentary, “Kobe Bryant’s Muse,” with filmmaker Gotham Chopra. And in 2018, he wrote and produced an animated short, “Dear Basketball,” that won an Academy Award. On Sunday night, Lizzo, the most-nominated artist heading into the 2020 Grammy Awards at Staples Center, kicked off the show by telling the crowd, “Tonight is for Kobe.” And it was, as surely as Bryant will be honored at the Super Bowl, the Oscars, the NBA All-Star Game, and throughout many days, nights, and years to come.
--- Remembering Kobe Bryant, the philanthropist. Kobe Bryant was also known for his contributions to the community off the court. His goals extended way beyond the hardwood, and he was committed to promoting basketball and other sports to young people, girls in particular. Through his Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Foundation, the charity the NBA star founded with his wife in 2006, Bryant was the official ambassador for a children’s charity called After-School All-Stars. The organization provides after-school programs to 72,000 inner-city kids in need. Bryant also founded the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, California, and single-handedly sponsored the Mamba Cup basketball tournament there – the event to which he and daughter Gianna were headed when their helicopter crashed on Sunday. And he and Vanessa, according to WUSA9, were “Founding Donors” to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, giving at least $1 million in financial support. Bryant’s legacy as a great athlete and champion will long be remembered, as will his dedication and commitment to using sport as a means for young people to realize their dreams.
--- Super Bowl ticket demand could be headed for a record. According to Yahoo Sports and other industry sources, SeatGeek data shows the average resale price is $6,002, the "most-in demand Super Bowl ticket since SeatGeek started tracking prices" in 1010. At last look, the lowest “get-in” tickets on many of the large sales platforms were north of $5,200. The best seats at Hard Rock Stadium are "going for the fan-friendly price of $16,000." By comparison, the next highest-priced Super Bowl ticket came two years ago in Super Bowl LII between the Patriots and Eagles at U.S. Bank Stadium for $5,373. The San Francisco Chronicle noted that the demand for tickets comes as both teams offer "explosive offenses and a bit of a championship drought." The Chiefs have not been to the Super Bowl since 1970. The 49ers last appeared in the Super Bowl in 2013, but they have not won since 1995. With the game still six days away, peak inventory has yet to hit, so there's no telling where this market could end up.
--- Super Bowl bound Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes tops the NFLPA's top 50 player merchandise sales list. Patrick Mahomes has "moved into first place" on the Top 50 Player Sales List, based on data "provided by officially licensed NFL partners" collected from March 1-November 30, according to CNBC. Mahomes, whose merchandise sales are up 30% compared with this time last year, also is the "top-selling player" across Fanatics' network of sites from the start of the 2019 regular season through last Sunday's AFC Championship game. NFL Players Inc. interim President Steve Scebelo emphasized that Mahomes’ support outside the Kansas City market "contributed to an increase in sales for products" featuring him. Of course, if Mahomes goes on to beat the 49ers and win the Super Bowl this Sunday, the sky’s the limit as far as his future merchandise sales and endorsement deals go – not to mention his next NFL player contract.
--- The NFL putting final touches on Hard Rock Stadium ahead of Super Bowl LIV. The NFL is "putting the final touches" on Hard Rock Stadium to ensure the venue is "prepared to host" Super Bowl LIV on February 2, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Between NFL employees and hired contractors, 6,000 people are working in and outside of the stadium in the final week leading up to the game. Meanwhile, the fan-centric Super Bowl Experience at Miami Beach Convention Center opened on Saturday and runs through February 1. NFL Senior Director of Event Operations Eric Finkelstein said that with the NFL celebrating its 100th season this year, there will be "surprise additional festivities surrounding the game.” On the food festivities front, one of the packages being offered to suite holders is the $5,000 "Oysters and Pearls Package" by Centerplate. It includes "one dozen oysters on the half shell, freshly shucked and served with traditional accompaniments; sustainably farmed and harvested caviar with crème fraiche and homemade potato blinis; a bottle of Dom Perignon Brut 2008 Vendage, served in commemorative flutes; and a cultivated Akoya pearl bracelet." Proceeds go to the Ocean Conservancy, the host committee's Ocean Partner.
--- Twenty years ago, the dotcoms invaded the Super Bowl. Hashtag Sports digests a Fast Company story that reminds us that the now ubiquitous presence of digital companies in Super Bowl ads is still a fairly recent phenomenon. “Of all the dot-com brand commercials in the 2000 Super Bowl, E-Trade’s was the best. While others were funny, E-Trade’s dancing monkey was a living embodiment of what we were seeing at that very moment, right in front of our eyes,” Hashtag reminisces. Brands were taking millions of dollars, putting it in a pile, dousing it with gasoline, and paying for the opportunity to toss a match on it in front of 100 million people. It was a year when brands at the Super Bowl all of a sudden had a distinctly 21st-century suffix attached to their names: Autotrader.com, Pets.com, Monster.com, OurBeginning.com, andthelike.com. It was a new century, and 17 dot-com brands were featured in Super Bowl XXXIV, compared to two in 1999, which is almost as many web-based brands in one game that have bought Super Bowl ads in this last decade.
--- It takes a village – the 49ers and Chiefs are bringing large contingents to Miami for Super Bowl. The 49ers are "flying over 1,500 staff members and spouses to Miami on multiple charter planes" for Super Bowl LIV. 49ers CEO Jed York said on Twitter, "We're talking a lot of people. We wanted to make sure that our entire staff had the opportunity to go…Everybody from [coach Kyle Shanahan] and [GM John Lynch] all the way down to interns, everyone's been a part of this, and we wanted to make sure they're there to help and also celebrate the moment that hopefully gets us over the hump.” Meanwhile, the Hunt family, including Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt and Norma Hunt, widow of late Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt, will be hosting "close to 2,000 staffers, friends, and family members" in Miami, according to a source cited by the Kansas City Star. Consider that according to USA Today, the average American hotel has 115 rooms, so the room nights taken up by 49ers and Chiefs contingents alone amounts to a large chunk of South Florida hotel real estate this coming week.
--- Lowe’s is building an actual NFL village in Miami for its Super Bowl LIV activation. The league’s official home improvement sponsor is installing 32 team-themed structures at the Super Bowl Experience fan fest in Miami, which opens Saturday, with Lowe’s as presenting sponsor. The 6,000 square foot “Lowe’s Hometown” will include 32 8 x 8 x 8 structures in team colors and themes. Lowe’s vendors Chamberlain, Kobalt, Valspar, Trex, Leggett & Platt, and Scott’s Miracle-Gro assisted and will get branding at the Super Bowl Experience at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The “Lowe’s Hometown” activation is part of the home-improvement retailer’s “Bring It Home” Super Bowl campaign, which will also be on digital and channels, along with out-of-home ads, and in-store activations in the Miami market, including visits by NFL players and the Lombardi trophy. A cause-related element will see Lowe’s assisting hundreds of volunteers performing home repairs for nine families in West Coconut Grove.
--- Volvo is tying its car sweepstakes to a Super Bowl safety. Volvo Car USA has dubbed February 2 "Volvo Safety Sunday" and will give away $1 million in cars if a safety takes place during Super Bowl LIV. The company is promoting the sweepstakes on its social media channels. To participate, consumers must visit VolvoSafetySunday.com by game time. On the site, visitors are encouraged to design their own Volvo from 2020 models, adding the features of their choice. On the summary page, participants will be presented with a "Try to Win This Volvo" button that creates a unique configuration code necessary to enter the contest. Last year, Volvo also opted not to be an official game sponsor, instead giving mobile users a chance to win a S60 sedan Care by Volvo subscription during the Super Bowl. The carmaker’s “S60 Longest Drive” contest challenged smartphone and tablet users to keep their eyes on a video of a car for as long as possible. This year, Volvo is obviously bringing safety into conversations around its guerilla marketing campaigns.
--- The NBA and NBPA announced that LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers secured the top spots on the NBA’s Most Popular Jersey and Team Merchandise lists for the second consecutive year. The results are based on NBAStore.com sales October-December 2019. The Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo ranked No. 2 on the player list, followed by the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry (No. 3), the Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum (No. 4), and the Houston Rockets’ James Harden (No. 5). Antetokounmpo, Tatum, and Mavericks guard Luka Doncic (No. 6) all earned their highest rankings to date, while Pelicans forward Zion Williamson (No. 15) made his debut on the list, according to the NBA. USA Today noted the Raptors "made the top five for the first time in franchise history," and the Nets (No. 10) "finished in the top 10 for the first time" since 2014. On a day in which people around the world honored Kobe Bryant, whose No. 8 and No. 24 jerseys were both retired by the Lakers, it seems only fitting that the team and James, who passed Bryant’s all time points total on Saturday, hold the top spots.
--- As NFL conference championship game merchandise broke sales records on Fanatics and elsewhere, international sports and lifestyle brand New Era Cap Co., Inc. celebrates 100 years. New Era has over 500 licenses in its portfolio, including service as the exclusive MLB baseball cap provider since 1993. According to their news release, the company will launch special collections featuring new designs, product collaborations, and re-issues of classic caps and apparel throughout the year. The collections will also celebrate the future of New Era through global partnerships with fashion brands Helmut Lang, Yohji Yamamoto, Levi's and Havaianas; visual artist Daniel Arsham; contemporary furniture brand Modernica; watch brand Casio G-SHOCK; and the brand's first-ever circular economy product with Pentatonic. As part of the centennial year, Buffalo-based New Era will also partner with the Buffalo History Museum to present the first comprehensive exhibit for the brand.
--- University of Oregon guard Sabrina Ionescu has a chance to be the No. 1 pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft. But her "long-term value might be the sway she holds with a group that has often been skeptical of women’s sports as entertainment: men," according to the Wall Street Journal. The Warriors’ Stephen Curry has praised her game, while Grizzlies forward Ja Morant "tweeted a goat emoji" and LeBron James retweeted her video. UO Warsaw Sports Marketing Center Director Whitney Wagoner said that though Ionescu "isn’t the first superstar female player…the attention she’s drawing is different." Wagoner said, "For a long time, one of the things that has held back the popularity of women’s basketball is this sense that male sports fans have that they are better than women’s basketball players…But when you have a female athlete where men get that she’s better than they are, then that’s a different dynamic.” Ionescu was one of dozens of prominent athletes to honor Kobe Bryant on Sunday – Bryant was one of her biggest supporters, and she had long considered him a mentor and close friend.
--- Larry Fitzgerald buys minority stake in Suns. NFL Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has "purchased a minority stake" in the Suns, becoming the second active NFL player with an NBA ownership share, according to ESPN.com. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2018 bought a share of the Milwaukee Bucks. Fitzgerald has a "strong relationship" with Suns Owner Robert Sarver, and the limited partnership "has been in the works for months." Fitzgerald already has a "significant ambassador's role" with the Suns, and he has done "everything from sit in on potential front office candidate interviews to canvass for a Suns public arena vote." Sources said that he will not take on a "more active role with the Suns until his professional football playing career is over.” It is only to the benefit of the greater Phoenix community that the much beloved Fitzgerald will remain in town when his football days are over to become a leader in sport business in the region.
--- California tribes will petition for sports betting at tribal casinos. A coalition of 18 Native American tribes in California was "given approval to begin circulating petitions for a statewide ballot initiative that would allow sports betting at tribal casinos and horse racing tracks, but not at rival card clubs or on the internet," according to the Los Angeles Times. Card clubs "vowed to campaign against the tribal casino proposal and instead support another ballot measure being considered by the California Legislature that would apply to a larger group of gambling interests." A legal sports betting market could bring in $2.5 billion in "gross revenue annually in California." State Assemblyman Adam Gray said that the market could generate $250-500 million in "tax revenue for the state." Gray and state Senator Bill Dodd have each "introduced legislation that would put a constitutional amendment on the statewide ballot as early as November to allow sports betting." To make the ballot, lawmakers have until late June to "overcome the divisions in the state gambling industry over how to allow sports betting."
--- Turner Sports’ ELEAGUE and Twitch are teaming up for a community-driven live show titled ELEAGUE Super Punch. According to Cynopsis Sports, the series will look to show each week’s biggest esports and gaming moments, along with the creators and communities that drive them. The new show will be hosted by Twitch streamers and gaming personalities Ify Nwadiwe, Kelly Nugent, J.D. Witherspoon, and Alex Corea. Super Punch will be formatted as a fast-paced and dynamic take on the late night talk show format with real time engagement built into the live show. The series will air on both Twitch and TBS starting in February, running Monday-Friday beginning February 3 in addition to streaming live on a dedicated Twitch channel. Beginning February 21, each Friday episode will also see a special live showcase on TBS. Having a dedicated platform for esports on both television and on Twitch will draw in new esports fans due to its community based and collaborative media components.
--- UFC and Facebook team up for exclusive content pact to push Pay-Per-View fights. According to Variety, UFC has upped its investment in original content for Facebook to try to convert more of its 26 million Facebook mixed martial arts fans into premium pay-per-view buyers. Under the one-year deal between UFC and Facebook, the MMA promoter is producing three original shows for Facebook Watch. All the content will be tied to 20 UFC events over the next year and available for free at UFC’s Facebook page. The content started rolling out last week ahead of UFC 246 on Saturday, January 18, featuring the headline Conor McGregor vs. Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone bout. The UFC Fight Week exclusive original shows on Facebook Watch are: “Quick Hits,” “The Check-In Show,” and “Fighter Commentary.” The deal comes as Facebook remains in experimentation mode on its original video strategy, more than two years after bowing Facebook Watch in the U.S. and still hungry to be part of the sports media realm.
--- NBC to produce four daily Tokyo 2020 Olympics shows for Snapchat. NBC is again turning to Snapchat as part of monetizing its Olympics media rights — coveting the app’s millions of millennials and Gen Z users. NBC Olympics and Snap inked a renewed pact to present coverage of the XXXII Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo, as well as the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, to Snapchat users in the U.S. It’s the third Olympics the two companies have teamed on, following the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio and the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. The 2020 Olympics partnership encompasses four daily original Snapchat Shows produced by NBC, exclusively for the platform in vertical-video orientation. Those include — for the first time — two highlights shows that will be updated in “near real-time.” Overall, NBC plans to produce more than 70 episodes for Snapchat, more than three times the 2018 Winter Games. NBC Olympics will be the exclusive seller of all ad inventory for the custom programming on Snapchat. In 2018, over 40 million unique viewers in the U.S. watched NBC Olympics content for the Winter Games, up more than 25% from the 2016 Rio Olympics. Significantly for NBC, of those 40-plus million, 90% were under the age of 35.
--- Extreme sports fall under one media roof via Thrill One. According to SportsPro, The Raine Group and Causeway Media Partners, the growth stage venture capital firm led by Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, have combined action sports touring group Nitro Circus, the Street League Skateboarding series, and production house Superjacket Productions to create Thrill One Sports & Entertainment. The new venture will be headed up by Joe Carr, formerly of the UFC and World Surf League, who will serve as Thrill One’s chief executive. Thrill One, already claims to have 40 million followers across its brand pages and channels thanks to its previous three companies, has more than 30 events scheduled for 2020, and will produce over 100 hours of live sports, along with more than 175 episodes of original programming. The venture is expected to generate more than $100 million in its first year according to Bloomberg. The move comes with action sports set to gain more global exposure through the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which will feature skateboarding and surfing for the first time, as well as BMX freestyle and inevitably boost the new sports media house’s presence.
--- Music streaming giant Spotify is in talks to acquire Bill Simmons’ The Ringer. According to Variety, the digital content and podcast network launched by ESPN alum Bill Simmons in 2016 is in the early stages of talking to Spotify about falling under the music media company's umbrella. Spotify’s pursuit of Ringer is not that surprising given the streaming music giant’s drive into the podcasting realm during the past year. Ringer is a sports and pop culture-centric content hub and production banner that features more than 30 podcasts from Simmons and his staffers as well as notables such as David Chang and Larry Wilmore. Simmons built up a massive online following during his tenure at ESPN that has now surpassed five million individual Twitter followers thanks to his time as an on-air commentator and also spending time with the Grantland news and commentary website that he steered for the Disney-owned sports behemoth. Although Simmons was ousted in May 2015 after numerous clashes with ESPN leaders, it seems he may be poised to cash in big time and potentially move, with his devoted clan, under the Spotify roof.
--- HSBC Bank USA will collaborate with Rick Horrow to create unique experiences for customers and prospects geared towards financial literacy. The partnership will center around the launch of Horrow’s latest book, The Sport Business Handbook: Insights from 100+ Leaders Who Shaped 50 Years of the Industry. Curated events will be held in markets across the U.S. where book contributors will share the lessons that helped shape their athletic careers and future successful business endeavours. Entitled “SportBusiness 50:  Lessons and Leadership from Legends of the Game,” the partnership will launch its initial event in Miami, coinciding with Super Bowl LIV. The announcement is another example of HSBC’s commitment to supporting the growth of its local communities and the customers within each. It follows the bank’s launch of the HSBC Financial Wellness Center in early 2019 powered by EVERFI, a leading education technology company. The online platform features a series of engaging modules focused on financial literacy topics such as buying a home, planning for higher education, and building credit. The platform is available to anyone looking to advance their own financial literacy, inclusive of corporate partners as well as clients and non-clients of the bank.
--- Twitch is hosting a Super Bowl Fortnite tournament to raise $500,000 for charity. According to Polygon, Twitch is hosting a Twitch Rivals Fortnite tournament to celebrate the NFL’s biggest game, which will include some of the world’s most famous Fortnite streamers teaming up with NFL athletes live in Miami, site of Super Bowl LIV. The tournament, which Twitch has dubbed the Twitch Rivals Streamer Bowl, will feature 16 different duos. The teams were chosen in a draft, where the streamers picked which NFL player they wanted to partner up with. The teams will compete for a charity prize of $500,000, which Twitch will donate to a charity of the winners’ choosing. The competition will be live from the NFL Players Association party in Miami and streamed on Twitch with high profile football players including, but not limited to JuJu Smith-Schuster, Keenan Allen, and Baker Mayfield. The event will be held in the lead up to the actual Super Bowl game starting on January 30. By bringing together football, esports, and charity, the NFL is positioning itself as a forward-thinking sports league.
--- Women’s NCAA basketball gets a broadcasting boost from ESPN as the sports network is beefing up the presence of the 2020 Women’s Final Four. According to Cynopsis Sports, the semifinals and championship games will be carried in primetime on the flagship network rather than ESPN 2. Additionally, the entire first and second rounds of the women’s championship will be available nationally on ESPN’s television networks, eliminating regionalization as had been the case in past years. The ever-growing popularity of women’s college basketball drove most of the change, but so too did women’s rights changes in sports over the past few years. The move marks a step by ESPN to finally put forth similar efforts to market the women’s sport the same as it does to promote the men’s game, something that fans have been advocating for years. Last year, the Women’s Final Four produced an 8% ratings increase, and this year can expect to have even bigger numbers due to its more favorable network and airing time.
--- Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers fans raise nearly $20,000 for charity after a fight between the two NHL teams. According to CBC, the two teams got into an altercation on January 11 as Oilers forward Zack Kassian and Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk traded jabs during Calgary's 4-3 win over Edmonton. The fallout from the game, which featured some questionable Tkachuk hits before Kassian's retaliatory attack, included a two-game suspension for the latter and nothing for the former. Flames fans started a fundraising campaign to place billboards with Tkachuk's face plastered on them across Edmonton. When the campaign reached $3,053 in less than 24 hours, surpassing its $2,500 goal, a local radio station stepped in to say it would handle the billboards, and the fundraiser money would now be directed toward ALS research. That GoFundMe page now says it has raised $3,738. Then Oilers fans struck back. Twitter user @SamInYEG posted a donation receipt to the charity Brown Bagging For Calgary's Kids "so that kids can get a proper meal and grow up to be tougher than Tkachuk." Now, more than $10,000 had gone to the charity and Dragon's Den actor W. Brett Wilson also pledged to match donations up to that number, as well as another $5,000 to the Edmonton shelter of @SamInYeg's choosing. Combined with the Calgary efforts, it is nearly $20,000 in donations due to two hockey players starting a fight – making good come from pain.
--- After a beer can celebration, Budweiser will donate Eric Fisher's NFL fine amount to charity. According to 247 Sports, the NFL fined Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Eric Fisher for a beer can celebration in last week's AFC Divisional playoff win over the Houston Texans and the beer company stepped in to donate the fine amount, $14,037, to a charity of Fisher's choosing. After Chiefs tight end Blake Bell scored a touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes with 13:52 remaining in the fourth quarter, Fisher ran over to celebrate with his teammates near the stands in the end zone. The offensive tackle then grabbed two beer cans that were on the ledge of the end zone, banged the two cans together and poured them over his helmet, similar to a maneuver of WWE legend "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Now Kansas City and Eric Fisher will be playing in the Super Bowl against the defensive juggernaut San Francisco 49ers and Fisher can focus his mind on the game after his round-about charity donation.
