I am back home from vacation in Isla Mujeres. Sheila is staying a few more days. We know other visitors on the island. Sheila is hanging out with them this week.

The Island is a 25 minute ferry ride from Cancun. It is about tourism, but not at all like being inside an all-inclusive resort. Many folks we ran into visit Isla for several weeks at a time and stay in small condos or rooms.

We rented a two-bedroom place in a small, four-unit building. It was at the north end of the island. That's where many of the American and Canadian visitors stay. But locals live there too. From our roof we could see the family next door, cooking and putting out their laundry to dry. Our door is the blue one in the bottom left picture.

Some US hotels I've been at lately don't offer daily changes of sheets and towels. "For the sake of the environment," ya know. Our modest place in Isla included fresh sheets and towels every day in addition to full room cleaning. It felt luxurious.

More local people live mid-island and to the south end. However, visitors rent places all over the narrow island. A couple we know has the equivalent of a studio apartment mid-island for two months at $600/month. A realtor would call it "Very cozy." I liked it.

That couple has bicycles they store there for when they come back each winter. They also rent a golf cart from time to time to drive around the island, as many visitors do. Some Americans and Canadians purchase places instead of renting. Some beautiful, modern houses dot the island.

One of the first things I did upon arrival was slather myself in SPF 50 sunscreen. My pasty white head and back made the soft, white beach sand look like black pepper in comparison. The sunscreen worked well. I have only one small patch of burned skin where I missed covering a spot on one ankle.

You won't find chain restaurants here. The few banks and gas stations have familiar names, but that's about it for big brands.

Warning signs are few and far between. Servers bring cold beer to the beach, in glass bottles. This was my fourth or fifth visit and Sheila's 12th. We've never seen or heard someone break a bottle. There are no lifeguards at beaches or pools.

When crossing roads, cars, golf carts, and scooters seem to have the right-of-way over pedestrians. Sidewalks are rough and uneven. You learn to be careful and pay attention. At times soldiers and police patrolled the streets with rifles. We felt secure the whole time, even while walking in dimly lit local neighborhoods.

One resort-like place where we hung out at for a few hours has a pool with concrete seats and tables in the water. A server, seeing me cooling off in the water, asked if I'd deliver a glass ashtray to four women sitting at table in the pool.

Smoking isn't allowed inside bars and restaurants, thank God. Unlike the US where that's just understood, there are some No Fumar signs posted in Isla businesses. I bet I didn't see more than a dozen people smoking the whole time I was there.

Touristy stuff is there if you want that. Two streets have vendors hawking t-shirts, magnets, and such. Scuba and fishing trips are available if that's your thing. Golf carts and scooters can be rented. Mainly I eat good food, drink relatively inexpensive drinks and cheap beer, read, and relax. Surprisingly though, I recorded 10,000 or more steps every day.

Many of the older buildings would make an American code inspector twitch with anxiety. Few stairs, even very steep ones, have railings. Nor do all the rooftops. Our place had a railing on top but the buildings next to us did not. A realtor might call those "Unencumbered terraces." I easily could have done one of those cop TV show stunts, jumping from building to building while chasing a perp down the block.

Try tracing these wires. Or finding the source of the water lines. A realtor might say "Plentiful utilities." We did have excellent water pressure, hot and cold. Just don't drink it.

Bathrooms in some bars and restaurants... oh my. An Applebee's is more sanitary, but then you are eating at Applebee's. About ten years ago one of Sheila's friends purchased a toilet seat with her own money and installed it herself in one of the island's bars she liked to frequent. She had developed some nice leg muscles from so much hovering. Life's trade-offs, right?

One bar's women's room has a lot of comments in Sharpie about Mark. Some female out there somewhere DOES NOT LIKE MARK. Apparently a frequent visitor to the island, she documents when bad thoughts of Mark cross her mind. The men's room offered some scribbles both for and against Mark. We didn't cook. There are too many local places that are fun and tasty. In some parts of the island you can actually order a meal at someone's house and eat on their patio. I'll have a separate post later about how we hired local guy bring us to seven different places for food one night.

Several times we shared restaurant tables with other visitors, some we knew from previous visits, some total strangers. A couple from New Jersey wanted to sit on the patio at a restaurant Sheila and I like. All three outside tables were occupied. We had empty chairs at ours, so we invited them to join us and had a wonderful evening talking with them. The wife did sound a bit like Carmela Soprano. Her husband, however, did not make me remove my cap. Another restaurant had a cat you could pet during dinner at another place.

In addition to the restaurant cat there were sidewalk dogs. They putter around or relax on the warm pavement. People walk and drive around the dogs. The little one on the left greeted me as I walked along the malecón on my way to a massage.

I could get used to scooter life. Sheila has one at home, but it's engine is literally six times the size of what these ones here have.

Carnival celebrations began on Friday. Our place overlooked the town square, by the Catholic Church. It was fun to watch the celebration with the loud music and lots of people.

i don't talk about my IRL stuff that often but this was too funny to not share. it's a wild ride from start to finish

i called my dad today to chat and he told me he was taking a trip to miami beach next month.

"oh that's cool!" i had said, and he responded with "yeah, but i'm going there on business." my dad has been retired since his mid-50s so i assumed "business" had to do with maybe with buying or selling something.

"what business?" i asked. he responded by saying the most wild string of sentences i'd heard in a while.

"well, i want a massage chair, yknow. but everywhere i've looked, they don't let you test it before you buy it," basically a consequence of department stores like sears going bust. most furniture stores don't just have a showroom of massage chairs out to test, even if they stock them. he continued, "i did some searching, as i do. and yknow i don't want to buy anything online because that defeats the purpose. i wanna try it out before i buy it! so i saw that there are only two places that kept popping up with manufacturers that have massage chairs to test: china and south florida."

regardless of whether or not that's actually true, i'm already reeling from this information, but it's not out of the realm for weird shit my dad gets up to.

so the conversation continues. he talks about where he's flying in and where he's staying. conveniently, he just so happened to book a hotel that's close to where his friends in FL are.

now my dad is familiar with FL. i was born there, we lived there for a while, and he had lived there for some years prior to my birth. but it's been a while since he was last down there. he hasn't seen his friends in years. i could tell that this ultimately was just an excuse to go see his aging friends before something happened, given that at least one of them is sick. if the massage chair emporium (or whatever the hell it is) was located in, say, minnesota or washington state, he wouldn't bother. i could tell it was just an excuse to go visit friends because he's the type of guy who needs to have a "reason" to go visit someone. he has social anxiety and he's rather shy, so it's sort of an "easy out" in case he ends up not wanted, in his head. "well i was just in the area anyway," etc. that sort of thing.

but that's not where this goes wild.

on the subject of the hotel, he tells me its name. predictably, given the area, its name is in spanish and he mentions that his spanish is rusty. mine is also rusty, but i've retained more of it than he has. i found that to be an odd thing to point out at first, but that's when he drops the bomb:

"so, it says 'gay' guesthouse."

i'm confused because my dad isn't gay (i think) and so i was wondering why on earth he would book a room in a gay hotel.

"yeah...??"

"so like i said, my spanish is rusty. is 'gay' like... gay-gay?"

i start laughing. "uh, yes, to my knowledge in common vernacular, 'gay' just means 'gay' in spanish."

"well okay, do you mind lookin it up for me and checking it out?"

"sure."

i look it up on my phone and i put him on speaker. i should mention that my roomie is next to me while this conversation is happening.

i look it up, and start giggling.

"did you find it?" he asks. i say yes and recite the flavor text on the search result: "[hotel] is a luxury gay guesthouse in [area]. start your gaycation, etc."

we're silent for a split second before we both start laughing. my roommate whispers, "wait is he staying in a gay hotel??" and i nod. she starts laughing, too.

after a moment, my dad's like, "huh! well, i guess it is! how 'bout that?"

then he hollers over to his wife, who is NOT going on this trip btw, and goes, "YEAH IT'S A GAY HOTEL."

after calming our asses down, he finally just goes "eh, i don't give a shit about that, it'll probably be the cleanest and nicest hotel in FL." that sends me all over again from the absurd idea of my 68 year old married father staying in a hotel for gay men. but whatever, he's already booked it and he's no quitter!

so in summation: my dad is going to FL to go test drive a massage chair, that which in and of itself is a convenient excuse to go see his friends, and is staying in a luxury gay hotel while he's down there.

he has promised to take plenty of pictures of the hotel so i'll probably post those when i get them.

Dozens of luxury high-rise buildings in South Florida are sinking

Miami’s barrier islands are home to many tall luxury buildings, and, according to a study recently published in Earth and Space Science, about three dozen are sinking. 

Thirty-five luxury condos and hotels across Florida's Sunny Isles Beach, Surfside, Miami Beach and Bal Harbour have faced subsidence in the past handful of years, the study found.

It was authored by researchers from the University of Miami, Florida Atlantic University, University of Houston, University of Hanover in Germany, GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and California Institute of Technology. 

It involved reviewing Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar data. 

The sinking of the high-rises amounted to 2-8 centimeters over a multiyear span running 2016 through 2023, according to the researchers. 

High-rises expect to see "up to several tens of centimeters" of settlement "during and immediately after construction," the University of Miami Rosenstiel School said in a Friday post on its website.

Builders constructed a "majority" of the affected condos and hotels after 2014, according to the study.

Almost three dozen high-rise condos and luxury hotels along the beach in South Florida are sinking or settling in unexpected ways, in some cases because of nearby construction, according to a new study. The 35 buildings surveyed along an almost 12-mile (19 kilometer) stretch from Miami Beach to Sunny Isles Beach have sunk or settled by 0.8 to 3.1 inches (2 to 8 cm). About half of the buildings are less than a decade old, according to scientists at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. The study was published Friday. “The discovery of the extent of subsidence hotspots along the South Florida coastline was unexpected,” Farzaneh Aziz Zanjani, the lead author, said in a statement. “The study underscores the need for ongoing monitoring and a deeper understanding of the long-term implications for these structures.” It’s not uncommon for buildings to sink a little during and soon after construction, but the scientists called their discovery surprising because some of the changes took place several years later. Limestone under the South Florida beach is interspersed with layers of sand, which can shift under the weight of high-rises and as a result of vibrations from foundation construction. Tidal flows and construction projects as far away as 1,050 feet (320 meters) have contributed to settling, the researchers found. The study used satellite images to capture the changes, with settling most noticeable in buildings in Sunny Isles Beach. The scientists said preliminary data also suggests sinking or settling further north, along the beaches of Broward and Palm Beach counties.

You grimace at the newly posted schedule above the time sheets. Next week you were to start the night shift.

“Looks like you drew the short straw newbie,” Sarah teases as she peers over your shoulder.

“It’s fine, it’s temporary.” You say with a tight smile. You regretted how you desperately pandered to the hiring manager during your interview. The position you’d applied for was for the afternoon, 2nd shift, but when asked if you were flexible to cover a few nights you immediately agreed without hesitation.

“I don’t know about that. I heard James, the one your covering for found a new job.” She shrugs, barely acknowledging your frown.

That was news to you. You hadn’t actually met James, but you’d seen him in passing—usually when you were clocking out. He didn’t come across as particularly friendly.

“I'm sure they will find a replacement in no time.” You say trying to convince yourself.

She scoffs walking past, “That’s what they told James.”

The check-in rush fills the lobby with a buzz. This was your first experience working at a resort hotel, and not just any resort—the Grand Lux. It stood as the largest on the island, and a far cry from the smaller motels you'd worked at before.

The resort exuded pure luxury, with its grand marble lobby gleaming under sparkling chandeliers. Huge windows showed off the clear blue ocean, while the soft scent of jasmine filled the air. For those who could afford it they enjoyed the private villas that lined the south beach with its white-sand, shaded by tall palm trees, and the infinity pool seemed to blend into the sea.

You wish you could escape to one now.

You smile tightly holding your composure while the guest berates you. The hotel is at capacity and thanks to a system error their room is double booked and villas were off limits for substitutions.

“I understand your frustration, but we no longer have any available rooms,” you inform. They aren’t happy why would they be. You look over to Sarah for help. She and the other clerks are all busy handling their own guest leaving you stranded to solve this on your own.

“You see this,” she spits, shoving her phone in your face and points to the confirmation number. She is right it’s all there, but there is nothing you can do.

“We booked three months ago. Three,” She emphasized with her fingers. “How can you have sold our room!”

You feel sweat pool under your arms as you try to sort this. This was turning into a scene, and with probation hanging over you, you needed to prove you had the problem-solving skills to stay.

“We have a sister location-“ you begin. Hands gently rest on your shoulders, startling you.

“Excuse me for a moment Darling.” The creamy accented voice smoothly interjects. Your mouth opens, but no words come as you're gracefully guided aside.

The tall blonde smoothly takes your place and smiles at the disgruntled guest. You’d never seen him before. From his suit and name tag it’s clear that he is a manager. A stark difference from the pastel green blazers and khaki pants clerks were forced to wear.

“My apologies madam. I do understand your fruition,” he empathizes. You watch as he types and converses with the guest. The red in her face fades slowly. The woman that was ready to bit your head off was now giggling like a school girl.

You don’t know what magic he intends to pull off. You’d checked and double checked, but there was no rooms available to accommodate her.

“Oh lucky, I wouldn’t mind going all night with him,” Sarah purrs playfully as she comes up beside you.

“Who is he?”

“He’s the night manager, Mr. Pine.” She informs as you both watch on. He is handsome and from the look on your disgruntled guest charming.

He catches you both watching and flashes a bashful smile. You spin-away flustered and Sarah follows suit. Ogling the man isn’t the kind of first impression you wanted to make.

James arrives and passes by without acknowledgment. You want to go up and speak to him, ask him questions, but he was just too intimidating.

It will be fine. Night shift can’t be that much different than 2nd shift, right.

You sigh and glance over to your now empty station. The guest was gone, thankfully. How Mr.Pine managed to handle that you didn’t know, but hopefully it didn’t reflect poorly on your performance review.

“Excuse me Darling, may I have a word?” The smooth accent startles you once more. You spin around, surprised by his sudden appearance again.

“Uh sure.”

You’re silent as he leads the way. There’s nothing good about being called to the manager’s office. There never was.

The door closes and dread grows as he rounds you, perching himself on the edge of the desk and faces you. You’d been doing so well until now. You’d hope to make it through your probation period without a hitch. But now, everything felt up in the air.

“Take a seat.” He encourages, motioning to the empty chair before him. Sullen you do as your told.

His legs seem impossibly long, stretched out and blocking your path, and he makes no move to shift them.

“Thank you for saving me. How did you-I mean I checked the system. There were no rooms available.” You eke out nervously, taking the seat, fingers fidgeting in your lap.

“Nonsense at the Grand we are family. Things like this happen all the time.” Mr. Pine assures. “And as for the resolution I find that in a pinch a night in the presidential suite and complementary bottle of Dom Perignon normally does the trick.” He says with a wink.

“You're the new girl? Correct?” Mr. Pine asks and you nod feverishly.

“Let me introduce myself properly. I’m Jonathan, Jonathan Pines. Night manager. I actually wanted to talk to you about the new schedule and apologize for the sudden change. I know no one looks forward to missing a night out for work.”

“Oh I don’t mind,” you lie with a tight smile. You needed the money, and if you were going to stick around, you'd have to take whatever they offered.

“I’m sure your partner will worry with you being out so late.”

“I don’t have to worry about that, my cat, Scotty, might not like it though, but he’ll adjust.” you assure him.

“That’s a pity. You’re quite beautiful darling, any man would be so lucky.”

You’re a bit frazzled by his words. He was likely just being polite, a skill that came with being in management, offering a simple compliment to the pathetic cat lady.

“Well then I’d hate to keep your kitty waiting,” He smirks and offers his hand. You take it, and with a quick tug, you're pulled to your feet—he’s surprisingly strong. “I look forward to burning the midnight oil with you in the coming weeks.”

“I look forward to it too.”

Your heart settles, and silently thank the stars. Once again, you’d convinced yourself things were worse than they were, stressing for nothing. It was a bad habit and exhausting.
