U.S. Air Force marks 100 years of air refueling with national overflight

In honor of a century of excellence in air refueling, the United States Air Force (USAF) is expected to fly over all 50 states on June 27.

The Army Air Service - a predecessor of the Air Force - developed a way in the 1920s to extend flight missions, allowing aircraft, which were strictly propeller-powered, to remain in the air without landing to refuel.

On June 27, 1923, U.S. Army Air Service aviators performed the first air refueling, by passing gasoline through a gravity hose between two DH-4B aircraft. During this historic event, 1º Lieutenant of the Air Service Virgil Hine and 1º Lt. Frank Seifert pumped fuel from one plane, by means of a hose, to the other below, carrying Captain Lowell Smith and 1º Lt. John Richter. A few weeks later, Smith and Richter set a new resistance record of more than 37 hours, which involved more than a dozen refueling contacts, according to the USAF Museum.

Today, more than 150 tanker planes from 26 Total Force facilities are expected to participate with KC-135 Stratotankers, KC-10 Extenders and KC-46 Pegasus aircraft during overflights, celebrating a revolutionary capacity delivered 100 years ago. An Iowa National Air Guard Stratotanker KC-135, for example, will perform F-16 overflights in the Missouri River Valley region — and the 168ª Alaska Wing will fly over many locations with KC-135, including Fort Yukon in the east. central part of the state, Deadhorse in the far north and Kenai at the far south.

The announcement earlier this year about the acquisition of the KC-46A and the accelerated search for the state-of-the-art air refueling system (NGAS) is driving the advancement of capacity that was developed and entrusted to aviators a century ago, the USAF declared.

While many countries are considering shorter working weeks, Greece is implementing a six-day workweek to boost productivity. 🇬🇷

Starting Monday, employees can now work up to 48 hours a week, a measure unions have condemned as "barbaric."

Akis Sotiropoulos of the civil servants' union Adedy criticized the move, highlighting that other countries are adopting four-day weeks. Su-27 fighters prevented the violation of the Russian border by the RC-135 reconnaissance plane and British Typhoon fighters over the Black Sea.

Two Russian armed Su-27 fighters escorted an RC-135 electronic reconnaissance plane and two UK Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters over the Black Sea, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on Monday.

"Russian airspace control over the waters of the Black Sea detected three air targets approaching the border of the state of Russia. To identify the targets and prevent a violation of the state border, a pair of Su-27 fighters from the air defense forces were triggered," said the ministry, quoted by the state news agency TASS.

The Su-27 fighters identified the targets as an RC-135 intelligence and electronic warfare aircraft and two British Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighters.

The main mission of the RC-135 is signal intelligence, where it collects and processes various types of electronic signals for strategic and tactical purposes. The aircraft is equipped with a wide range of sophisticated information collection equipment, allowing you to monitor, detect and intercept enemy communications and radar emissions.

“As the Russian fighters approached, the foreign military aircraft moved away from the border of the state of Russia. The Russian planes returned to the airfield of their base and the violation of the state border was not allowed."

The Russian ministry emphasized that the interception was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace in neutral waters, without crossing air routes or dangerously approaching aircraft from a foreign state.

The United Kingdom Ministry of Defense did not disclose information about the event.

This comes days after the RAF mobilized its fighters to intercept Russian military aircraft flying near NATO airspace. Last week, the British air force said that for three consecutive weeks, RAF fighters were scheduled to intercept Russian aircraft flying near NATO airspace.

The Black Sea and the Baltic Sea have witnessed in recent months several interceptions by Russian aircraft and NATO members. Tensions over airspace and air conduct increased between Moscow and the West last March, when a U.S. military surveillance drone (MQ-9 Reaper) crashed into the Black Sea, after a meeting with Russian Su-27 fighters in international airspace near the territory that Russia claims to be annexed from Ukraine.
