why can’t i see the ‘shut up for once’ story? :(

Hi everyone. I’ve gotten this kind of message A LOT and I guess the problem is the formatting on the new mobile app? When I’m on PC or mobile browser (safari, chrome) I can see everything fine. But in the app most of my fics have all but disappeared. I’m not entirely sure how to fix this, and for any fics that simply don’t show up anymore I sadly don’t have them saved anywhere else but here. My apologies, it’s a tumble thing not a me thing. I fully intended to keep this blog up for however long the website was still running tbqh. But I will attempt to get everything sorted out and fixed when I have the free time and actually remember to do it. 🥲

Okay, so, I came across this fix to the desktop asks when I got really irritated at the word limit and formatting.

The fix let’s you ask and submit to blogs the same way as you would on mobile.

The extension works for both PC and MacBook, but right now I’m on a PC. I could get my mom’s computer to show the MacBook one if anyone wants it though.

You need to have Chrome for this to work, as it’s a Chrome extension. It is free though.

Go to the Chrome Web Store and click the Extensions tab.

Look up “mobile tumblr for PC/Mac” Click the one that looks like this.

Click Add To Chrome. Allow whatever it says you need to allow.

Near wherever the top of your dashboard is, a jigsaw piece icon should be there. Click it and the Tumblr extension should show up. Pin the Tumblr extension. Here’s a picture of what it looks like after that.

NOTE: I’m so sorry! The pictures stop from here, as my wi-fi is being glitchy and won’t let the extension connect to the website right now.

Open the normal tumblr website on a new tab.

Click the little Tumblr Icon, and a mini version of the mobile Tumblr should pop up.

It’s basically just mobile Tumblr from here, but where the asks and submits are located is just a bit different.

Click on the desired Tumblr Blog you want to send an ask to. Should take you there.

You know how there’s a little person icon in the top right, when on the real Tumblr mobile it would let you turn on notifications for a blog? Click it.

A drop down menu of options should appear. Click your desired one, which would be asks in this case.

Type out your ask! The formatting works just the same as regular mobile Tumblr. Press enter to start a new block of text, highlight the text to subscript, add a link, bold, etc.

Submit!

ok so i wanna talk tech really quick for a second because i got the reply up above and i wanna talk abt it (name cut out because i don’t wanna be rude)

so putting stuff under a readmore is like, the first step of formatting that i do (which i need to do by lightning-quick editing the post, same time that i add the tags) because the absolute last thing i want to do it clog up someone’s dash or the main tags or anything like that, because that’s the worst. so i immediately panicked when i saw this because oh shit did i forget a readmore?

it looks like on mobile in the app it shows up correctly in tags, on the dashboard, and on my blog’s page, and when logged in on PC it shows up correctly in the tags, on the dashboard, and on my blog’s page when the page is sidebarred. but on mobile in a browser viewing my blog and on PC when my blog is its own tab, the readmores don’t show up.

so,, i spent about half an hour muddling through trying to figure out how to fix that. that involved two web browsers and a phone, all with tumblr fired up at the same time, all trying to edit posts so they show up with a readmore. it didn’t get me much of anywhere, and at this point i’m starting to think the default tumblr theme just doesn’t support its own formatting which is fuckin wild to me

so, couple options. option one, ask y’all if you know how to fix it—so, anyone know how to fix that? option two, start answering requests with a link to the fic on AO3—luckily i already have a place where i’m archiving requests for when tumblr starts getting mad about formatting, but it would be a good few extra steps and would mean going back through all the request posts and replacing them with a link, and would also be an extra step for anyone who wanted to read my stuff. option three, one i don’t like much, be okay with people being inconvenienced and unable to read my stuff, if you’re on desktop you can press J to scroll through to the end of the post and if you’re using a mobile browser to view my tumblr i’m sorry about your luck and also just get the goddamn app, mobile browser tumblr is a fuckin nightmare
