Sonya Eddy (June 17, 1967 – December 19, 2022).

Sonya Eddy, best known for her role as Epiphany Johnson on the ABC soap opera “General Hospital,” has died at 55, Variety has confirmed.

“I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy. I truly loved her not only as an actress, but as a friend. The lights in the hub of the nurse’s station will now be a little dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set. On behalf of the entire GH cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends and fans. She will be very missed.” Frank Valentini, “General Hospital” executive producer, said in a statement.

In real life, Eddy was also a licensed vocational nurse.

“My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel,” Eddy’s friend and fellow actor Octavia Spencer wrote on Instagram. “Her legions of ‘General Hospital’ fans will miss her.”

Eddy’s producing partner and close friend, Tyler Ford, told TMZ that the actress had scheduled surgery on Dec. 9, but it wasn’t an emergency.

Ford said she was released from the hospital on Dec. 11, but started to feel sick again, and went back to the hospital four days later. That’s when doctors reportedly discovered a serious infection had developed.

Ford said the infection was “uncontainable,” and doctors told him Monday morning that Eddy had been placed on life support. She died Monday night, according to TMZ.

So far, there’s been no official cause of death released about the actress.

‘General Hospital’: Yvette Nicole Brown to Guest Star in Tribute to Real-Life Pal Sonya Eddy

Later this month, General Hospital is set to honor both the late Sonya Eddy and her character, no-nonsense GH head nurse Epiphany Johnson, in a special episode.

TV Insider has learned exclusively that Yvette Nicole Brown (Community, The Odd Couple), who’d been friends with Eddy for 20 years, will appear on GH as part of the show’s tribute to the late actress. Eddy passed away on December 19 due to complications from a scheduled surgery that she had underwent earlier in the month.

Brown shared on Instagram last year how she and Eddy became pals. “[I] first met @sonyaeddy back in 2003 when we both were testing for the sitcom #TheBigHouse,” Brown wrote. “From that moment on she became a dear friend of mine. I collected her.

“Sonya, @octaviaspencer, @thecurvycritic [Carla Renata] and I walked with each other thru the ‘salad’ days of our careers,” Brown continued. “Supporting each other as we chased this dream. Often auditioning for the same things, always celebrating whoever won the gig. Sonya was a force. She was unapologetically joyous and a loyal friend.
