This One Song… Martha on Please Don't Take Me Back
This One Song… Martha on Please Don’t Take Me Back
Tell you what – we love hearing from artists when things go right. We equally love hearing from artists when things go dreadfully wrong. A song that was a piece of piss, written in 20 minutes? Or years in the making and a bastard to write? Whether it’s a song that came together through great duress or one that was smashed out in a short amount of time, we’re getting the lowdown from some of our…

Reading Response 1-Postmodernism
Postmodernism is the rejection of and response to modernism in which artists are straying away from modern art rules with the thought of art as an authentic and original production by the artist. Postmodernists created worked around the idea that there is no originality in artworks just recreations of previous works that have influenced the individual. The time and culture we live in reinforces that idea and has become prominent as influence and inspiration as at people's fingertips with social media and the internet. The text mentions how postmodernists believe that art is a clash and cluster that culture has more of an influence on the piece than the individual. High and low art are also discussed, and it was nice to see Jeff Koons make “kitschy art” that embraced the “cheap, tasteless and tacky” art that modernists claimed it to be. Doing so this allowed art to take more forms that seems it would have made art more accessible and easier to create without the judgement of a modernist view. In its totality, I enjoyed the reading and agreed with these tactics and strategies of postmodernism but, that is not to say that modernists and the art from that time are in a wrong position. There are great works and tradition that have come from modern works of art, but postmodernism seemed inevitable. Though postmodernism claims to be the pasts recreations there are so many amazing things made that reflect an individual or a cultures perception of these things that, in a sense is a new work in its own right.

Themes of Postmodernism
1. Escaping the confines of museums
Tumblr media
“Smiling King Bear” 2017. Okuda San Miguel. Life is Beautiful festival.
I chose this as my example because while it is now resting in an art gallery in Vegas, it was meant to be an installation as part of the Life is Beautiful festival, which I think is incredibly fitting for this category.
2. Collapsing boundaries between "high" and "low"
Tumblr media
Unknown.
I chose this picture because it is a pop art version of a famous picture of Albert Einstein, and while it does not look as serious as the original photo is (because obviously), it still somehow portrays a different, more upbeat meaning to me.
3. Rejecting originality
Tumblr media
“Yellow Islands” 1952. Jackson Pollock.
I chose this picture because it is quite literally just dripping paint on a canvas and letting it dry, which isn’t as original as one might think. In attempt to become more abstract, I feel as though people look to dripping on canvas as a way to do that, but it ends up being just like so many other pieces that have already been made.
4. Jouissance
Tumblr media
“Jouissance” Paul Saucier.
I chose this artwork with the new Tumblr guidelines in mind, since there is more of a filter now than there was before. But you can still tell that this is a passionate painting with the way the woman arches her neck towards the man’s face.
5. Working collaboratively
Tumblr media
2013. Michelle Maher. Beaumont Hospital School.
I chose this piece because it was the first picture that popped up that wasn’t a school project for children.
6. Appropriating
Tumblr media
Barack Obama “Hope” Poster. 2008. Sheperd Fairey.
This is the most iconic image that I think of when I think of appropriation. While Sheperd went through legal action on this photo because he didn’t get permission to use the original image, this is a perfect example of editing another work to create a new work (but I suppose in this case, not enough to call it original).
7. Simulating
Tumblr media
Unknown.
I was having trouble finding a good simulation artwork because that word could be applied to a lot of other things, but then it dawned on me that the most obvious simulation artwork would be the idea of the matrix.
8. Hybridizing
Tumblr media
“Hybridizing Earth” 2016. Lee Leenam.
I chose this artwork because he drew the traditional painting that’s in the background, but then used a software tool to add the glowing lines with the VR headset to represent that virtual work will probably be the new future of art.
9. Mixing Media
Tumblr media
Art Anthology.
This clearly has different elements/mediums in the artwork, from the fake rose, to the picture, to the background that looks like it’s some type of pattern. No doubt this is a mixed media artwork.
10. Layering
Tumblr media
2013. Pu the Owl.
This person actually explained how they made this artwork on their blog, and it was almost entirely digital with the manipulation of light, objects, layering, and digital images using various layers.
11. Mixing codes
Tumblr media
Samuel F.B. Morse in Morse Code. 1999. Ken Knowlton.
I chose this because I noticed there were a lot of art installations that included QR codes, and while that might not be exactly the same/too literal, I think the picture in morse code looks cooler and flows more smoothly.
12. Re-contextualizing
Tumblr media
“The Craftsmen Series: The Silver Collection.” 2011. Stacey Webber.
I chose this because this tape measure sculpture is made entirely of coins. This definitely makes you re-examine the object you are looking at, which I would think would be the point of the sculpture.
 13. Confronting the gaze
Tumblr media
Unknown.
Here is a picture that is clearly a clap-back of the idea of the male gaze. The woman is shooting a dagger into a much smaller man, which is a clear disscontempt.
14. Facing the abject
Tumblr media
“Untitled #175″ 1987. Cindy Sherman.
This definitely looks like various foods left or have melted on the ground, next to sunglasses (a very mundane item). They look to be squished, old, and undesirable, which is what the abject is.
15. Constructing Identities
Tumblr media
“Roberta Construction Chart #2″ 1975. Lynn Hershman Leeson.
I chose this to represent identities because I feel as though more and more people choose to alter their looks in order to create/grow into or to change their self identity. They believe that altering their face is what will make them prettier, and more womanly. This is definitely a piece that is trying to portray that issue and how it can be such a problem.
16. Using narratives
Tumblr media
“My Son Peter” John Wilkison.
This picture I think is open to interpretation, but also clearly represents a narrative being that this older man is reminiscing. However, about what, or what those lines mean is unclear.
17. Creating metaphors
Tumblr media
2006. Banksy.
This picture is a metaphor for how people worship shopping, and how sales can take over people’s lives and wallets because that is all they live for. It is almost like a religion for some people in that they keep up with the sales to the point where some people keep up with sermons, and follow the Bible religiously.
18. Irony, parody, and dissonance
Tumblr media
“Sea is For Cookie” 2013. Sonny Malhotra.
This is probably my favorite section because there are so many good parody pieces out there. This one is based off of “Kanagawa oki Nami ura (The Great Wave at Kanagawa)” 1830-32. Katsushika Hokusai. Which is honestly one of my favorite pieces of art.

FMP Research - Sonny Malhotra
I decided to look for some photographers who are still taking pictures through the pandemic and Lockdown.
Sonny spent weeks in lockdown on his one exercise a day cycling round London, taking pictures and chatting socially distanced with his friends around the area, resulting in photos of these people in isolation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These select images show people looking at the outside world from their locked down homes, all of which are isolating. The photographer explains that for the first few days, the images mostly showed people bored but happy for some brief human contact, through a window, however after days of being in lockdown, he found them more frightened and concerned.
The third one particular interesting as it looks like the bars on the window could be seen as a prison, and someone wanting to escape again into the free world, and as they progress, they are looking less amused by the situations.
I definitely find this work interesting and it would be equally interesting to see how it develops, relating this to my theme though, I dont want to directly link it to COVID and lockdowns surrounding it (taking pictures of others in lockdown and their emotions.) I want to portray the emotions felt through my photos indirectly, meaning the photos represent the emotions myself and others may feel during lockdown. These photos focus solely on the emotions and expressions of these people.

Rewd Adams & The Last Skeptik - Everything's OK
South Londoner Rewd Adams does not want to be put into a box. Not that he's claustrophobic, it's more of a creative limitation thing. He raps and sings, plays and produces and although his defining influences are drum&bass MCs his style is predominantly hip-hop. While Adams carves his own path, Sonny Malhotra carves books to make videos like this one. Combining his own drawings with chopped up and bastardised literature to create an entertaining mish-mash of stop motion madness.
