WELL, IT’S BETTER THAN APRIL

another month that was mostly movie-missing, though I did just finish SHAZAM! which was surprisingly great for the most part.

Run down of favorite films of the year so far that came out in 2019 - there’s only 7. Happily, none of these movies are outright awful, but some are more ‘eh’ than others.

7. Fighting With My Family. It’s a biopic, whatever. I’m counting on Florence to bring it in Midsommar next month.

6. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. GREAT message that needed to be a little more prevalent in the film.

5. Detective Pikachu: Well done integrating Pokemon into a semi-real world. Zangoose was not present. That’s a problem.

4. Shazam! That climax man, that was way too long for me, but the rest preceding it is fucking stellar. I love the DCEU. I do!

3. Us. I’m placing this higher bc I love Lupita and her performance. It doesn’t meander so much as Det Pika in the third act, so it does belong this high up. & I still was interested in why, but not in a ‘oh this makes no sense’ kind of way, in a ‘not everything has to be spoon fed to you in a movie, just use your damn imagination’.

2. Aladdin. Who the fuck expected this. Not me. And while it’s definitely not perfect, especially regarding a culture amalgamation mishmash of....things that get a handwaved explanation, I like it more than I ever anticipated. Second best movie Guy Ritchie ever made. 

1. Alita: Battle Angel. She is still that girl.

For the rest of the year, we have Midsommar, Artemis Fowl, Sonic the Hedgehog, Rise of Skywalker. Hoo boy, that is next to nothing.
