„Snow sure is beautiful.“, I said quietly to myself. It snowed overnight and now the streets and trees outside are covered in white. Though the sunset outside colored the snow in an orange hue. I really spent the whole day sitting on the big windowsill, listening to music, and looking out the window. I was so in thought and enraptured by the sight, that I really didn’t notice. Not that I minded. It was a beautiful sight.
“I hope Syo isn’t worried though.”, I thought. I took one of my earbuds out to allow myself to come back to reality. The windowsill I was sitting on is located in our bedroom. Syo has always known how much I love to look outside, so he decorated the windowsill (it’s more like a window seat actually) with cushions to make sure I‘m comfortable. It was so thoughtful of him. And I was incredibly thankful. I smiled at that memory. But I started to shiver. As pretty as snow is, it means cold weather. And the cold is something I’m very sensitive to. Then I heard the door open and in came my fiancé. He was holding a tray and a blanket with a slight smile. Judging from the look on his face, I assumed it all was meant for me.
“Hey, princess. I hope that I didn’t interrupt you.” “No, don’t worry. I was just in thought.” Syo chucked. “Yes, I noticed.” He placed the tray down in front of me and wrapped the blanket around me. I raised one of my eyebrows at his actions. “How did you know that I’m cold?”, I asked and immediately cuddled up in it. Syo winked in return. “We’ve been dating for almost 3 years and I know you even longer than that. Would be weird, if I didn't know you by now, right?“, he answered. I only blushed shyly, because he is right. Syo proceeded to sit down on the other side of the windowsill.
„I hope you like what I brought with me.“ On the tray was a cup of tea, from the pleasant smell I knew it was peppermint, and a little plate filled with chocolate chip cookies. Both my favorites. The little smile I already had, widened. How can one man be so incredibly sweet? With a nod I said: „Yes, I do. Thank you so much, babe!“ I cradled the cup in my hands and took a sip. The minty flavor immediately warmed up my body. Syo softly spoke up, before my attention could focus on the outside again.
„What were you thinking about?” „Many things actually. Some...reflecting on this passing year. A lot has happened.“, I replied. Syo nodded. „That’s true. The year really is almost over, huh?“ This time I was the one, who nodded and my gaze shifted to the wintery picture outside. In the corner of my eye, I could see that Syo also turned his head to look, but he kept his eyes on me. “I’m listening, if you wanna talk.”, his eyes “said“. “I know.”, I answered mentally. One of the things I love about our relationship is that we can understand each other without words. We‘ve always had this connection. A smile came to my lips again. I took another, but this time a bigger, sip of my tea. „Thank you for being here, Syo…”, I whispered to him. Syo smiled at me, before answering. “Of course. I’m always here for you. You can count on me!” He stopped for a moment, but then continued. Syo looked deep in thought.
“Do you even know how strong you are, Jules?” This question took me by surprise. I didn’t know how to answer him at first. “What do you mean?” I was confused. Syo lightly shook his head with the same smile as before. “I know what you’re thinking about. The stuff that has been happening for the last few weeks. Am I correct?” I bit my lip. Unable to answer him verbally, I just nodded. Syo slightly nodded in understanding. „I thought so...“ Syo suddenly sat up straighter. He had a determined look on his face.
“I know how hard all of this is for you and how often you felt helpless. Yet, you didn’t give up. You’re still standing after all you’re going through and went through and, not even once, you strayed from your kindhearted self. Just yesterday you told me how much you really wanna help that person. I admire that a lot about you. Even though I can’t help to also be worried about you. You really are the sweetest girl I know and I feel truly blessed to have you in my life. Also, please remember that you’re never alone, okay? I’m always here to protect you. I love you and am so proud of you, princess.“ Syo said that with such honesty and sincerity that I couldn’t comprehend his words. I tried to hide the tears that threatened to fall. All I could do was put down my cup, carefully stepping over the tray and then I threw my arms around Syo. I almost made us fall off the windowsill, but everything he said made me so happy. I felt Syo’s arms snaking tightly around me to hug me back. “T-thank you. I love you…”, I whispered. The tears started to fall then. I heard Syo’s soft voice in my ear. “I love you too.”
We stayed like this for a while. I felt the obvious wet stain on his shirt after we separated again. I immediately felt bad. “I-I’m so sorry about your shirt…” Syo just shook his head. “Hey, it’s fine, princess! Don’t worry about it.” Syo reached forward to take my glasses off. They were fogged up pretty badly after crying. The only bad thing? I‘m pretty much blind without them. „U-um, Syo? What are you doing? You know I can’t see without my glasses…“, I asked my fiancé confused. Syo didn‘t say anything. He just sat my glasses down somewhere in front of him. Then he once again reached out, but this time he wiped my tears away. I was so shocked from his gentle touch, that I couldn’t move. A thought suddenly hit me. I started to blush and looked down to our feet. „P-please don’t look at me right now!“, I said in a panicked voice. Syo came closer and kissed my forehead before laying his on mine. „You don’t have to be so shy now, princess.“, he said with a little chuckle. „You’re beautiful, okay?“ A shy smile came to my lips. „But I just cried. My eyes must be all puffy and red. And ugly.“ Syo moved to kiss both of my cheeks. The sensation made me shiver. „Nope. You’re beautiful.“, he said once again. My blush deepened. I got so embarrassed, that I had to hide my face in the crook of Syo‘s neck. My voice was muffled. “I...thank you…” I always become bashful when complimented. Especially from him. “Of course.” After my blush was as good as gone, I turned in Syo’s arms to grab a cookie from the plate. The sweet, sugary flavor hit me immediately. I was curious though. “Hey, babe? Where did you get the cookies from?” I knew that Syo and/or I didn’t bake recently.
“Oh, yeah! They’re from Natsuki.”, Syo said seriously. My eyes went wide in shock. My expression must have been funny, cause Syo bursted out laughing. I looked over to Syo with big eyes. My fiancé spoke again after calming down. “I’m sorry, princess! My parents sent them over. They couldn’t wait till the holidays.” I hit him playfully in the chest and Syo chuckled again. I spoke up. “Oh, really? Did you call them?” He nodded. “Yeah. They asked if we’re still coming and are staying over the holidays. My parents are excited to see you again. And Kaoru too. ‘Best wishes to my little sister! Can’t wait to see her again.’ he said.” The last sentences made me smile. “You mean ‘us’, right?”
“No, they definitely like you more than me.”, Syo answered jokingly. We both laughed warmly. I felt this happy feeling spreading in my heart. No matter how down I’m feeling, I can always count on Syo to cheer me up. “Well, I can’t wait to see them again either. It’s been a while. The last time was when we announced our engagement back in April.”, I said. The best event in this whole year. Syo looked at me with such fondness, that it made me almost tear up. “Yeah. And, hey, we’re married when the next year’s holidays arrive.”, he said. I nodded slowly and answered him with a smile. “That’s right. I can’t wait for our future together.” “Me neither. You’re gonna look absolutely beautiful in your wedding dress.“ Syo paused for a moment and looked at my red face. „Though I‘m still not amused, that my dad is the first one to see you in it.“ My fiancé tried to sound annoyed, but his face betrayed him. I giggled and quickly pecked his cheek. „It will be worth the wait…“, I reassured him. Syo only grinned in response. He slowly came closer. I could see the faint blush on his cheeks, even with my very blurry vision. The sight took my breath away. „Babe? I love you so much…“, I said softly. He whispered his answer before our lips touched.
„I love you more, princess.“
