“people do crazy things when they’re in love.” scene with eclair and neuvillette NOW! 🔪 (jk, go back to sleep, answer later <3)
Stares at Eclair taking that gunshot for Neuvillette --
wjhfhj no but really if I think about it, Eclair has always had a rather...unconventional way of going about things. Reckless but effective. Even Neuvillette has described her as "decisive and observant, but with a recklessness bordered with concerning amounts of abnegation." But even that might be a little bit of a shallow observation.
She's not exactly self sacrificial and does understand when something is too big for her to handle on her own, she's just not someone to back down from a challenge. Add in the fact that she has an extremely protective streak in her and it leads to that idea that she just does things. Makes them up as she goes along and then hopes for the best. In reality, she's already figured out three possible endings to an altercation. Unfortunately, one of them plays it too safe and lets the suspect escape and another one results in potential casualties. The third option, the one that puts her at open risk, is the best choice as it lessens the chance of others getting hurt. But even then, she's leaving that all up to chance.
And leaving it up to chance is what can get her into danger the most.
It's something Neuvillette has never exactly figured out about her. From his understanding, most humans have self preservation as a priority and won't willingly throw themselves into situations where there's a chance for injury (or death for that matter). But he understands that there are humans that become soldiers and warriors in order to protect others. He assumed that his role was the reason she took that shot for him. He assumed she prioritized his security and safety and endured the pain of her injury because he is the Iudex. What he didn't expect, however, is to hear her tell him that she wasn't looking at the Iudex in that moment. She was looking at someone that wasn't aware of the danger she had become privy to. Who would she be to stand idly by and allow him - the person Neuvillette, not the title of Iudex - to be injured or killed?
If something like this happens again and it leads to/becomes a "people do crazy things when they're in love", I absolutely believe that Neuvillette knows she would be about to do it. He'd be able to see the wheels in her head turning but wouldn't be able to stop her. But it would devastate him to know that she did it again. Not just to protect him or save him, but because she loved him too much to care for the consequences of those actions.
This has turned into an aimless thought drabble on them but...ugh, it's making me think of that one line I wrote forever ago when I mused on Eclair being critically injured or near death and Neuvillette's unwillingness to let her go after what she's come to mean to him. I should think about that again...
