You can hike on over 40 miles of trails, including the Lake Somerville Trailway, where the wildflowers are particularly beautiful during the spring. There are boat ramps at Nails Creek and Birch Creek, and you can rent canoes at either unit or bring your motorized or non-motorized boat with you. g/f: rd is mediocre but redeemed a little by the campiness of the jumpsuit and also their quality as skaters, fd is one of their better ones from the last couple seasons. they still have beautiful quality of movement and challenging and gorgeous lifts! charlene is very regal if a little boring

mrazeks: i don't remember anything about the rd except some questionable lyric choices for a sibling team. mixed feelings on the swan lake fd - the skirt silhouette is bad, the gloves are bad, their posture is questionable for a ballet program, BUT their extended free leg twizzles that cover half the rink in seconds capture the Spirit Of The Bolshoi like nothing ive seen since elena ilinykh, and their dramatic posturing and general cuntiness fit swan lake better than it would other ballets. the lifts are very cool but terrifying, rlly makes you think on how effortless vm's goose lift - *gunshots*

bratti/somerville: unfortunately (as a determined ian somerville hater) i like both of their programs. ian is rock solid as always, and emily has either gotten much more comfortable as a performer (or ian's partnering better? probably both). prince lgc is one of the only tracks ive heard so far in rds this season that Actually Work with the silver samba. their ne me quitte pas fd is probably actually very ehh but i love the music too much to judge it objectively. now if these two actually projected any kind of connection between them during their skates.. i would be worried for b/s domination

gpa: i really, really want to like their fd and i think i will if they manage to really polish it through the season. but like, their strength is their control of movement (especially wrt caroline's core) so they're very good at highlighting complex accents or stillness in their music. but both their fd and their rd music calls for like, simple speed and flow and dynamics across the ice... either they'll reach that later in the season, or i think both their programs will always feel like they're missing something. also for the fd they need to set it apart from the Other contemporary abstract body shapes fd they did only two seasons ago, which is why i feel like they should be more Fluid with this fd. but i like caroline's fd dress a lot

my favorite set of dances so far this season is still cpom!! but I'm hopeful for l/l to bring something good. unfortunately ice dance still has a chokehold on me

i really like GF's FD music - it totally highlighted for me though that i don't feel a thing when i watch them skate. i think because i don't believe they feel the music- i don't see it in their bodies and movement. most of what's being used for expression is big arm gestures. it has some lovely elements like the stationary lift, though

super curious what the narrative of the Taschlers's FD is - with her miming what looks like holding a mirror and wiping at her face (ed: just read this program is in memory of their dad😢). glad to see them do well here - a small fed sibling team who skates with power and makes programs they really believe in 🙌

ouch Green/Parsons - the FD has a lot of potential, some of it is very beautiful. other moments look a little awkward, including the opening pose, though where it goes is pretty. but ooof kind of a bad dream of a competition for them.

Bratti/Somerville on the other hand have to be pleased - Ian is looking more like Charlie White in the FD 👀 he's doing some of the arm flinging to signal higher energy and emotion that Charlie would use (like in this program- the number of times he swings his arms around - the program looks much more dynamic if you watch him than if you watch Meryl or just their feet). but B/S did well today for their first time out with this program

the Mrazeks's swan lake FD i like a lot - it's much more skated than D/S's. the Mrazeks are using white swan music but dressing as black swan- i guess as soon as you dress as the white swan, there can be romantic overtones, so carry on lol

Dozzi/Papetti's Nessun Dorma FD is beautiful - that's a musical team - and the combo lift to the hydroblade at the end is😭 i guess speed and more power will come with time. idk why she's not wearing a brighter pop of color, though - this dress washes out on the stream, and rink lighting is grayish or dim

Manni/Roethlisberger's Interstellar FD - i have to admit i kept having to start over because i couldn't focus on it. K/R's Schindler's List - i don't know if they have a personal connection to this music, the red dress is a lot, considering what it means in the movie

a lot of teams are using the barrier in front of the judges and leaning over it, putting their hands on it, using it for choreo - really getting in their faces lol

i haven’t been posting about my hikes much anymore but i want to start again! my goals for this year are to be more comfortable solo hiking (bringing lyra along helps a lot!), to be able to go much further in a day (10 miles maybe?) and to try out backpacking!

So with synesthesia can you feel singing in your mouth when you sing? Does other people singing feel different to your own singing? Does listening to a recording of your singing vs actually singing yourself feel different? Sorry for the questions I just love synesthesia I think its so interesting and I was so happy when I found out there's an explanation for why Tuesday is purple

weirdly enough, i think singing and music are one of the few things i don't really get a mouth-based/oral reaction to? probably something to do with how deep i've delved into music as a technical profession, so it's like i've rewired the Mouthfeels part of my brain to be specifically A Work Tool for that particular realm of stuff!! and also i think the reaction might be more about the layering and texture of sounds than the actual sounds, if that makes sense? like how a good sandwich is about variety of textures, right?

q.e.d i had an obsessive bronski beat phase back in august/september that was definitely partly about jimmy somerville's voice as an auditory experience, but even moreso was about the way their combinations of different synth beats & tones grabbed at my bones and like. my throat, somehow? and there's literally like two measures of "you you" by odetta hartman (from ~1:25-1:35) that i would replay on a loop over and over again back in nov 2021, because one single bass note in there in combination with the glassier sounds and the reverbing percussion hits me like. pretty much just as hard as an orgasm, but in a completely different way. it's like light made physical, in the sense of vibrancy and suffusiveness.

i'm definitely gonna be thinking about this a whole lot more and paying more attention to how exactly i experience music going forward, but atm the loudest examples of the effect for me are, as the original joke went, Video Game Foley Effects. the sound layering of link's footsteps on stone floor in botw paired with the clattering of his gear lives in my molars and my soft palate, and the walking sounds in the dlc area of outer wilds have a whole fckin life in the roof of my mouth and my tastebuds. plus, yeah, the uhhh mountain theme? i think, also in botw, just feels like sinking into cool lake water to me. also the little effect for wall-grabbing in celeste... idk there's A LOT, this is all so new to think about!!!!!!!!

also nw about the questions—they're fun to think about, and also i Fully understand, like the funny part of this is i used to loudly WISH i had synesthesia, bc i wanted to see sounds?? ;lkjafwaf i was So Close, and listen, purple tuesday sounds Correct to me and i'm similarly fascinated by that!!!!!!

September 2023 Update

Belated greetings! And also, happy 1 year anniversary to writing these updates!!

One release I missed from September 5th is Chants of Sennaar, a puzzle adventure game that I've heard a lot of good things about. Excited to play it myself!

Cocoon releases Sept 29. Notably, it's being lead by the lead gameplay designer from Inside. After Playdead (apparently) imploded and multiple leads created their own game companies, I've followed them actively as a big fan. Somerville was one Playdead-alumni game that I very much did not like, so all this is to say, I really hope Cocoon is great! It looks like a big departure from the Inside formula.
