ForeFront Power completes 27 MW of New York community solar

ForeFront Power announced that the company’s first community solar projects in New York are now operational and providing clean, renewable electricity to subscribers across National Grid and Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E) service territories. The nine projects, representing 27 MW of capacity, are the first of a portfolio of over 75 MW across New York expected to be complete by the end of 2019.

Community solar allows utility customers, including those who rent or cannot install on-site solar, the option of purchasing up to 100% renewable energy from a local project while saving hundreds of dollars each year on electricity costs. More than 10,000 subscribers will benefit from electricity bill savings and renewable energy from these projects statewide.

“These projects are the first of many to serve customers with this innovative subscription model,” said Paul Walker, co-CEO of ForeFront Power. “These projects also represent a tremendous investment across the State that is resulting in local job growth and a contribution toward New York’s renewable energy goals.”

For all these completed New York projects, ForeFront selected Arcadia Power to subscribe interested customers. Households can join a community solar project by visiting Arcadia Power’s website to enroll.

ForeFront Power is developing community solar projects to serve subscribers across Central Hudson Gas and Electric, ConEdison, National Grid, New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG), Orange and Rockland Utilities and Rochester Gas & Electric utility service territories. Most projects are construction-ready with the first 27 MW completed at the end of 2018.

These solar energy projects will generate more than 90 GWh annually, representing the equivalent of 70,155 tons of carbon avoided from the grid or 13,512 cars off the road.

“New Yorkers are continuing to benefit from the State’s leadership in renewable energy policy development and execution,” Walker said. “New Yorkers now have a solution that provides the savings and environmental benefits of solar without any on-site impact or constraints.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a goal to produce 100% clean energy across New York by 2040 while doubling the NY-Sun Initiative goal to 6 GW by 2023. The goals were part of his State of the State address in Albany on January 14.

Derick Kowalczyk is interning with the Customer Energy Solutions department at NYPA’s White Plains office. He is from Somers, NY and is pursuing a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and an Master’s in Sustainable Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology. He described his favorite classes as Renewable Energy Solutions, which focused on the technical side of how solar, wind, hydro, and biomass work, and Senior Design, where he was able to work as the Project Manager to help create a manufacturing process and design for Pumice based Concrete Roof tiles that will be used for low income families in Nicaragua. He said that he finds the “development and acceleration of new renewable technologies in the marketplace” the most interesting aspect of the energy industry, and likes working at NYPA because he believes that “three things drive future development: Energy, Information, and Health” and he enjoys “how fundamental energy is to all other industries.” He elaborated, and explained that his favorite part of NYPA is “how future focused the company is, as well as the impact the Authority has on the communities in the State.” In five years, Derick hopes to work in the energy industry as a project manager for renewable energy projects, or work on smart grid acceleration for communities and utility companies.

Kristen Reilly is interning with the Research & Development Department at NYPA’s White Plains office. She is from Westchester, NY and is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware. She said that her favorite class so far has been Fluid Mechanics because of its “broad applications in various industries such as power, aerospace, and automotive.” She also explained that she is most interested in the various methods of large-scale power generation in the energy industry and how those methods “are changing with the recent focus for more sustainable energy.” Kristen enjoys working at NYPA because she is able to find ways to use “new and innovative technology to increase the efficiency of current practices in the energy industry” and can see the “real world applications” of concepts she’s learned in school. In five years, she hopes to be working towards earning a graduate degree and a professional engineering license.

Michael Bowes is an Energy Services Product Development Intern at NYPA's White Plains office. He is from Syracuse, NY and is currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University. His described his favorite classes as Alternate Energy Systems, Fluid Mechanics, and Heat Transfer, and finds “renewables and energy storage” the most interesting part of the energy industry. Michael said he likes working at NYPA because he enjoys “being on the forefront of the energy storage movement in New York State.” In five years, he hopes to be working on large-scale energy storage and renewables projects!

48 teams chosen for DOE-sponsored Solar in Your Community Challenge

SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) announced that 48 teams from 23 states and Washington, D.C., were selected from the early set of applicants to participate in the “Solar in Your Community Challenge.” Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SunShot Initiative and administered by SUNY Polytechnic Institute, the “Solar in Your Community Challenge” is a prize competition that aims to expand solar electricity access to all Americans, especially underserved segments of the population, such as low- and moderate-income (LMI) households; state, local, and tribal governments; and nonprofit organizations.

Offering $5 million in cash prizes and technical assistance over an 18-month period, the challenge supports teams across the country, enabling them to develop projects or programs that expand solar access to underserved groups, while proving that these business models can be widely replicated. Participation in the challenge is open to teams working to develop a portfolio of solar projects in their communities as well as those that are creating new solar programs that extend solar access to LMI households and nonprofits, in addition to technical assistance providers (consultants and coaches) that assist teams by providing the coaching and resources that teams need to create innovative new business models.
