Chronautical and the Perils of Time Travel
Time Travel is a central theme in Chronautical. Its two protagonists are time travelers, whose stories are reliant on that they meet in reverse. But how did the system we have now come about? And what even is it?
The time travel in Chronautical is based in a second dimension called "The Strings". It's named so because of the paths of energy which can be traveled along, which look like strings fading deep into space. Strings are related to points and times, and travelers use Anchor Points (which bind many strings together) to enter and leave this second dimension. Ships have a Strings Machine that attaches to a string and lets them travel along it. This lets them both travel in space and time to navigate the universe like a big space highway.
It takes a little longer than a month to travel from one side of the universe to the other, if one takes the shortest route. Traveling to nearby solar systems is a day trip, and some commute for work.
Technically, this is time travel. In a practical sense it would take far longer to travel between these spaces. But more than that, the Anchor points are not consistent in what galactic time they're in. Not that it matters, when everyone travels exclusively by Anchor and String. The Anchors are offset by the time they were installed, so it might be a difference of 1,000 galactic years or more between two points. If one were to practically travel the space between two solar systems you could theoretically time travel in a sense, arriving earlier than the normal flow of time, but the travel would take so long that no modern ship is equipped to do so, and the time taken would equal out to the difference anyways. So when one visits Anchor A it may be in galactic year 45007 but Anchor B is in galactic year 36065, but it doesn't matter after the Anchor points were installed, unifying those times. Now, people measure in Synthesis years across space, counting time from after the Anchors were installed.
If one leaves their usual solar system for work, traveling with the strings, and spends a month in a new place on vacation, then when they return to their solar system a month would have passed just the same. In this way, it doesn't matter if one is time traveling at all, the unification of space under these Anchors make this kind of time travel mundane. An anchor is connected to a bundle of strings, each usually connected to another anchor at the other end. If a ship wants to travel from planet A to planet F, these two solar systems may not be connected but a route could be A > G > C > F to get there, or possibly A > E > D > F for another route.

The solar system Atlantis made these structures to help in their dream of an enlightened universe. Due to their own overprotective fear of people stealing their secrets, they activated a security protocol which sunk them into the strings and trapped them in a time loop. Now, their over-complex and secretive processes have left their machinery only repairable, never replicable.
Alistair has a different way of traveling through time, though locally. The small devices that resemble astrolabes are used to attach onto a string. Their circular shape is intentional. Like a strings machine, the astrolabe attaches itself into the strings, but keeps the tangible dimension with the user. The central point of the astrolabe attaches to the current point on the string. Then, it twists the string into a spiral upon itself without letting go. (Ships traveling this string will coast along without issue, this is not tangible). After the twisting of this string, the selector attaches to a different part of the string within range of this new spiral. After the selection, it must release the center attachment to avoid dangerous energy buildup. The string unravels itself back to straight, and now the astrolabe user is in a different local time.
He was only able to figure this out through finding the research of a person who was trapped outside Atlantis when the disappearance happened, which drove him mad. His laboratory is what Alistair finds, and whose research paves the way for Alistair's machines.
I think in the original timeline (well, given that this is Bootstrap Paradox there may not be one), Jack was well matched to Alistair because of his mechanic background, as it meant similar machine meddling with Alistair. He was also probably chosen for his heart and his ability to connect with people in a way Alistair struggles with. But really, there's no original timeline, they just happen to be well suited.
So why design a time travel system at all? The player will never see this stuff, why bother? It's the same to them if they travel like normal. Well. I've always pondered time travel. Thinking I could come up with a more interesting solution. So this system was borrowed and heavily modified from another story of mine. In that one, the universe and all its parts were made from strings. In the same way that you can draw many scribbles of color on a page but focus on just one color to see its whole path, one can focus on elements in the world and see them connected. You could use this to make a fire start in a far location or move a structure somewhere nearby.

This is the universe! All of these! That's a sample of all the data in the world of everything happening at once. But can you tell your eyes to just look for the red, isolate it, and see its clusters? Someone with some kind of magic could now affect the isolated clusters to change their state. The scribbles model, dubbed "strings" would later become The Strings dimension, isolated down to just space and time. It started with knots tying places and times together like a web across space that you can travel on.These knots became Anchors later on as I ironed out the rules of the world.
While this system changed heavily, the idea of having a secondary space of strings to use for this has remained.While the time travel is really complex, I find that it's merging with the nautical space concept creates unique storytelling opportunities.
Alistair is able to find Jack again and again through time travel via a set of 4 watches which count down, and spatial coordinates, tracked backwards from appearances of himself in Jack's own timeline, gotten rather early. While this doesn't have an impact on gameplay while playing as Jack, it does explain internally why Alistair can be where he is.
As far as the player needs to know, time travel is real, and it's handled in a second dimension that's traveled through. Much of the extra information never makes it to them. Though, if I never made the in-depth explanation, figuring out the limitations of this system would be far more difficult. It poses questions like, why doesn't Alistair just stop the fire by time traveling? But with a more defined system we know that he can only snap to certain points in time, and the timeline is self-evening, so some changes won't take. Sometimes a fire must happen. But Alistair finds the variables he can change in a rescue setting, and tries to help.
The take away from this is: don't be afraid to plan out everything in depth. Even if it won't be seen, knowing your system well will make it easier to write.
