Jean Maurice Eugène Clément Cocteau, was a French poet, novelist, filmmaker, designer, playwright, actor, and theater director.

Cocteau began writing at the age of ten and at sixteen he published his first poems, a year after leaving the family home. Despite distinguishing himself in virtually every literary and artistic field, Cocteau insisted that he was fundamentally a poet and that all of his work was poetry.

In 1908, at the age of nineteen, he published his first book of poetry, La lampe d'Aladin. His second book, Le prince frivole ("The frivolous prince"), published the following year, would give rise to the nickname he had in Bohemian circles and in the artistic circles that he began to frequent and in which he quickly became known.

Around this time he met the writers Marcel Proust, André Gide, and Maurice Barrès. Edith Wharton described him as a man "to whom every great verse was a sunrise, every sunset the foundation for the Celestial City..."

During the First World War, Cocteau served with the Red Cross as an ambulance driver. During this period he met the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, the painters Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani and numerous other writers and artists with whom he would later collaborate.

Russian ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev challenged Cocteau to write a scenario for a new ballet - "It surprises me", Diaghilev was quoted as saying. The result was Parade, which would be produced by Diaghilev in 1917, with scenography by Picasso and music by Erik Satie. (Maisons-Lafitte, July 5, 1889 — Milly-la-Forêt, October 11, 1963)

Together with other Surrealists of his generation (Jean Anouilh and René Char, for example), Cocteau managed to masterfully combine the new and old verbal codes, staging language and technologies of modernism to create a paradox: a classic avant-garde. His circle of associates, friends and lovers included Jean Marais, Henri Bernstein, Édith Piaf and Raymond Radiguet.

His plays were taken to the stages of the Grand Theatres, on the Boulevards of the Parisian era in which he lived and which he helped define and create. His versatile, unconventional approach and enormous productivity brought him international fame.

He was elected member of the French Academy in 1955.

Cocteau made seven films and collaborated as a screenwriter and narrator in a few more. All rich in symbolism and surreal images. He is considered one of the most important filmmakers of all time.

Cocteau começou a escrever aos dez anos e aos dezasseis já publicava suas primeiras poesias, um ano depois de abandonar a casa familiar. Apesar de se distinguir em virtualmente todos os campos literários e artísticos, Cocteau insistia que era fundamentalmente um poeta e que toda a sua obra era poesia.

This advice is in line with the recent surge in the cryptocurrency market, which has seen Bitcoin reach a new all-time high of $89.6k.

The Call to Invest in Crypto

The advisory from Bernstein Research, released on Monday, urges investors to seize the opportunity presented by the current bullish trend in the cryptocurrency market. The research firm also warned against resisting this trend, stating, “Welcome to the Crypto bull market. Buy everything you can.”

Analysts at Bernstein Research, including Gautam Chhugani, Mahika Sapra, and Sanskar Chindalia, have pointed to a change in the political climate in Washington as a key factor driving the current bull run.

Bitcoin’s Potential Rise

Chhugani suggested that investors who have been wary of crypto due to regulatory uncertainties should reconsider their stance following the recent U.S election results. He anticipates a more crypto-friendly regulatory environment under President Donald Trump, starting with a pro-crypto SEC.

In a previous forecast, Bernstein Research predicted that Bitcoin could reach an ambitious target of $200,000 by next year. Despite the current price of $81K/bitcoin (+ 87% YTD), the firm maintains that the risk-reward ratio remains favorable over the next 12 months.

Experienced trader Peter Brandt has also shared a bullish outlook on Bitcoin. He pointed out that from March to October 2024, Bitcoin offered multiple buying opportunities during price breaks, setting the stage for a potential strong upward rally.

Altcoin Forecasts

Bernstein Research’s positive outlook extends beyond Bitcoin to include a variety of digital assets such as Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Optimism (OP), Arbitrum (ARB), Polygon (POL), Uniswap (UNI), Aave (AAVE), and Chainlink (LINK).

The analysts predict a significant surge in altcoins as the regulatory environment around tokens becomes more relaxed. They expect Ethereum, Solana, and other digital assets to outperform Bitcoin over the next 12 months.

Bitcoin Surpasses Silver

Bitcoin has recently overtaken silver to become the 8th largest asset by market cap. According to CompaniesMarketCap, Bitcoin’s market capitalization stands at $1.76 trillion, while silver trails behind with a market cap of $1.71 trillion.

Factors Driving Bitcoin's Surge The world’s largest cryptocurrency traded at approximately $86,117 by 14:59 ET (19:59 GMT) before hitting its record high. The recent gains in Bitcoin are largely attributed to traders betting that Trump will implement more crypto-friendly policies during his next term. Trump had campaigned on a pro-crypto platform, promising to make America the crypto capital of the world. This anticipation has led traders to believe that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may soften its stance on cryptocurrency regulation, thus increasing the legitimacy of the crypto market as an investment vehicle. Record Inflows into Crypto ETFs Optimism surrounding Trump’s presidency has resulted in substantial inflows into cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Bitcoin Slips Under $61K Amid Rising Market Fear: Report

Bitcoin (BTC) drops below $61K, reflecting a 2% decline amid market-wide losses.

The Fear & Greed Index hit 39, indicating rising fear among cryptocurrency investors.

Despite the market downturn, altcoins like PROS and SILLY have posted impressive gains.

Analytical platform CryptoRank reported that Bitcoin is currently trading below $61,000. This comes as the larger market for digital assets also appears shaky, with the top ten coins all down today. From these, Binance Coin (BNB) is down by 2.65%, Solana (SOL) is down by 2.37%, and Bitcoin (BTC) is down by 2%.

Crypto Market Sentiment

According to platform findings, the total market capitalization of cryptocurrencies has also dropped, falling by 1.94% to $2.24 trillion. The market was somewhat slightly different, with Bitcoin’s share reducing slightly to 53.74% from the previous 53.10%. Similarly, other tools such as the Fear & Greed Index, which is used to measure market sentiment, presently stand at 39, which shows that investors are filled with fear.

Short-Term Gainers in Altcoins

Even though the top cryptos are down, there are a few altcoins doing much better than the others. The highest gainers for the week were Prosper (PROS), which appreciated by 61.9%, Silly Dragon (SILLY), which gained 53.7%, and Dora Factory (DORA), which rose by 46.1%. 

Other day gainers include ParallelAI (PAI), which appreciated by 37.1%, and Wrapped Dog (wDOG), which rose by 29.5%. Altcoins remain generally in the red zone, but some of them at least provide short-term gains for those who are less patient.

The recent fall of Bitcoin has alarmed investors even more, especially when the Fear & Greed Index remains in the ‘fear’ territory. Traditionally, such market sentiment leads to the expansion of selling pressure, given that traders and institutions become more risk-averse. 

But it also provides an opportunity to those who want to enter the market at the lowest point before Bitcoin touches critical support levels. The positive performance of many altcoins points to the possibility of more returns. However, it is still possible to find opportunities for trading in the current volatile market environment.

Sosyal Demokrasinin Doğuşu, Marksizm’e Eleştirileri ve Sosyal-Reformculuk

Günümüzde Avrupa Solu olarak bilinen sosyal demokrasi, ülkemizde merkez sol veya uzlaşmacı sol olarak tanınır. Bugünü de içine alan süreçle birlikte ülkemizde bu ideolojinin en büyük temsilcisi kurucu parti olan Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi’dir. Tabi ki parti bu ideolojiyle kurulmamıştır. Ancak gelişen süreçte kendini ideolojik olarak bir yerde konumlandırmak isteyen Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi, radikal fikirlere kaçmayarak ancak halkçı kimliğinden de uzaklaşmayarak bu dünya görüşünün Türkiye temsilcisi olmuştur. Peki nedir bu sosyal demokrasi ve nasıl ortaya çıkmıştır? Gelin hep birlikte buna bakalım.

Sosyal demokrasiyi incelemeye öncelikle sağ ve sol kavramından başlamalıyız. Bu kavramın çok sonra popülerleşmesine karşın Fransız Devrimi sonrası ortaya çıktığı söylenir. Avrupa demokrasisi üzerine araştırmalarıyla ünlü olan tarihçi Geoff Eley, bu kavramların Fransa Kurucu Meclisi’nde ortaya çıktığını söyler. Kral XVI. Louis taraftarlarının meclisin sağ tarafında, ona muhalif olanların ise sol tarafında oturduğunu da ekler. Ve böylece sağ ve sol kavramları ortaya çıkmış olur.

Bu kavramlar zaman içerisinde olduğu gibi kalmaz. Değişerek farklı kavramlarla birleşir, bazen ise bölünerek çeşitli kavramların doğmasına neden olur. Günümüzde ise sol kavramı genellikle Marx ve Engels’in düşünceleri ile özdeş tutulur. Onların 1848’de bir broşür olarak yayımladıkları ‘Komünist Manifesto’ bugün bile radikal solcuların başucu kitabıdır. Fakat bu kitap ve Marx’ın felsefesi birçok kişi tarafından da eleştirilmiştir. Üstelik Marx’a yapılan bu eleştiriler yalnızca sağ canipten de değildir.

Marx’ı en çok eleştirenler ilk kuşak Marksistlerden, ki Lenin onlara ‘eski Marksist’ ve ‘dönek’ diye hitap eder, Karl Kautsky ve Eduard Bernstein’dir.

Almanya’nın solcu partilerinden olan bu isimler her ne kadar ezilenin yanında tavır alsalar da Marksizm onlara çok ütopik gelmiştir. Bu iki isim de Marx’ı ve Engels’i tanımak ve ilk vakitler onların fikirlerine katılmakla beraber ilerleyen süreçlerde bu felsefeye en sert eleştiri getiren isimlerden olmuşlardır. Ayrıca bu eleştirilerle birlikte Avrupa solunun temellerini atmışlardır. Şimdi bu isimlere biraz yakından bakalım.

Eduard Bernstein; Berlin’de, fakir bir Yahudi ailenin çocuğu olarak dünyaya gelmiştir. 20’li yaşlarda sosyalist fikirlerle tanışmıştır. Ancak onu Marksist ve sosyalist yapan asıl olay sürgüne gönderildiği Zürih’te Karl Kautsky ile karşılaşmasıdır. Onunla yakın arkadaş olarak birbirlerinin fikirlerini tetiklemişlerdir.

Bernstein, Marksizmi yeniden gözden geçirmeyi önerir. Bu durum radikal solcular tarafından eleştiri yağmuruna tutulur. Bernstein bunu yapacak cesaretin kendisinde olduğunu düşünerek ‘Sosyalizmin Sorunları (Varsayımları)’ başlıklı makaleler yayımlar. Bu yüzden mensup olduğu Alman Sosyal Demokrat Partisi (SPD) içerisinden de eleştirilere maruz kalır. Burada biraz Bernstein’in fikirlerine göz gezdirmek yararlı olacaktır.

Bernstein’in ilk eleştirisi ‘Komünist Manifesto’ya yöneliktir. 1848’de kamuoyu ile paylaşılan ‘Komünist Manifesto’da kapitalist sistemin çökmesinin çok uzak olmadığı söylenir. Ancak Bernstein bu fikre katılmamaktadır. Ona göre bu düzen kendi kendini devam ettirmekte ustalaşmıştır. Bankaların kredi olanakları ve ticaret hacminin genişlemesi ile kapitalizmin yol açtığı krizler hat safhaya ulaşmamaktadır. Kapitalizmin kendini yok etmesini beklemek acı ve uzun bir bekleyiş olacaktır. Bu nedenle sosyal bir kalkışma beklemek yerine sosyalistler, demokrasi içerisinde kendine yer bulmalıdır. Böylece yavaş yavaş halka kendini anlatmalıdır.

Bunun yanında Bernstein, ihtilalci anlayışın yapıcı etkisinden çok yıkıcı etkisi olduğundan söz ederek ihtilal yolunun terk edilmesi gerektiğini söylemektedir. Ayrıca demokrasiye önem verilerek proleter diktatörlük reddedilmelidir. Bernstein, döneminde atılan ‘devrim!’ nidalarına ‘evrim!’ diyerek karşılık vermiş ve sosyalizmin ancak belirli aşamalardan geçerek halka indirgemeyi uygun görmüştür. Aksi durumda devrim anlayışı tepeden inme ve geçici olacaktır.

Bernstein, bu görüşleriyle hem içerisinde bulunduğu Alman Sosyal Demokrat Partisi (SPD)’nin hem de Avrupa Solu’nun temellerini atmıştır. Bu fikirleri yüzünden ‘revizyonist’ denilerek küçümsenmiş ve eleştirilmiştir. Şimdi gelelim bir diğer önemli ismimize.

Karl Kautsky; 1854’de Prag’da doğan Kautsky de tıpkı Bernstein gibi 20’li yaşlarda Marksist fikirler ile tanışmıştır. Ancak onun bu konuda Bernstein’den daha koruyucu olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Çünkü Marx’a getirdiği eleştiriler bir yana dursun, Bernstein’in bazı fikirlerine karşı Marksizm’i savunmuştur. Örneğin Bernstein’in ‘kapitalizmin çökmemesi’ tezine sert şekilde karşı çıkmıştır. Ama buna rağmen o da tıpkı Bernstein gibi sosyalizmin demokrasi ile gelebileceğini düşünmüştür.

İşçi sınıfının kurtuluşunun yoksullaşma sonucu oluşacak toplumsal bir yankı ile değil yavaş ve düzenli bir iyileştirme ile olacağını düşünen Kautsky, barışçıl yollarla sosyalizmin topluma kabul ettirilebileceğini düşünmüştür. Ayrıca 1917’de gerçekleşen Ekim Devrimi’ni ve Lenin’i bürokratik ve şiddet yanlısı olmakla suçlamıştır. Lenin ise onu dönek ilan etmiş ve bunu kitabına isim olarak vermiştir (Proleter Devrim ve Dönek Kautsky). Kautsky buna karşılık Lenin’i birçok eserinde eleştirmiştir.

Lenin – Kautsky tartışması uzun yıllar sürmüştür. Lenin sosyal demokratları hayatı boyunca eleştirmiş ve onlara hitaplarıyla çeşitli suçlamalar yapmıştır. Lenin’in bu isimlere kullandığı kalıplardan birkaçı da ‘Sosyal-reformcular’ ve ‘Pasifistler’dir. Lenin bu isimlerin kapitalizmin boyunduruğu altına girdiğini ısrarla yenilemiştir. Kapitalizmin bir huyu da düşmanlarını reformcu göstermek ve onları bu şekilde pasifize etmektir. İşte Lenin’in kullandığı kavramlar da tam olarak bunu açıklıyordu.

Son olarak kısaca toparlamak gerekirse sosyal demokrasi; kapitalizme tam anlamıyla karşı olmayan, bu düzeni ortadan kaldırma amacı gütmeyen, ancak bu düzen içerisinde sosyo-ekonomik koşulları iyileştirmeye çalışan bir ideolojidir. İsmail Cem’in tanımıyla: ‘’İşçi sınıfı adına burjuvaziyle gerçekleştirilen, şartlı, bir arada yaşama uzlaşmasıdır.’’

Bernstein Salı günü bir araştırma raporu yayımladı. Bu rapora nazaran ABD Emtia Vadeli Süreçleri Ticaret Komitesinin (CFTC), potansiyel bir mutabakatın modülü olarak Binance’in ABD’deki faaliyetlerini durdurmasını gerektirebileceğini söyledi. Bernstein raporu, düzenleyicinin, kripto para borsasını ve kurucusu Changpeng Zhao’yu zorlayabileceğini açıkladı. Şirketin, ABD vatandaşlarının türev eserler alıp satmasına müsaade verdiği ve ülke maddelerini taammüden çiğnediği için güç durumda olduğu bildirildi. CFTC, Binance’i vadeli süreç teklifleri, yasa dışı borsa dışı emtia seçenekleri, vadeli süreç kurul yatırımcıları, belirlenmiş mukavele piyasası yahut takas yürütme tesisi olarak kaydolmama ve müşterini teşhis (KYC) ile ilgili maddeleri ihlal etmekle suçlanıyor. Hey there, thank you for the ask! I wrote the story you’re referencing almost four years ago, which is actually blowing my mind right now, and while I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to get back into the headspace of writing more of that piece in short story format, I’d be glad to share some headcanons of what I think it would have been like if Grace and Frankie had started coparenting while the kids were still at home.

In the story, Frankie imagines that Grace-as-stepmom would have picked up on Coyote’s substance abuse issues before Frankie and Sol did, and Grace imagines that Frankie-as-stepmom would have been permissive with Brianna (and presumably Mallory) on things like body modification. Here are some other thoughts:

In canon, Grace is so unhappy for much of the kids’ childhoods that she doesn’t seem to have had much capacity for taking an interest in what the kids were doing. But I really like to imagine her partnered with Frankie and much happier with herself and her life. I think she would have been really encouraging to Bud in particular; I’ve always felt that she and Bud have a similar hyper-responsible energy. I like to imagine them sharing books, and Grace wanting to hear his thoughts on what they were reading.

I often think about how interesting it is that Grace has a lot of disordered eating patterns (interesting because Jane Fonda herself is in recovery for ED, and I think it would be a fascinating experience to play a character with a lot of the same issue) and it’s addressed on the show through occasional conversations and lots of purely visual details, and my headcanon is that it would have been hard for Mallory and Brianna to grow up around that. I like imagining Frankie as this sort of positive influence in that respect, modeling what it means to genuinely enjoy food and modeling a lot of self-acceptance w/r/t food. I think it would have a positive influence on Mallory and Brianna, and on Grace.

This is sort of general but I really love the moments on the show when we get evidence or anecdotes of the way the Bernstein-Hanson families have always been connected. All the zany moments of shared history, even when Grace and Frankie didn’t enjoy each other’s company. So it’s kind of fun to imagine what it would be like to have those connected family moments in a world in which Grace and Frankie think the other is funny and great and enjoyable. All the inside jokes and idiosyncratic humor that comes from spending a lot of time with someone.

Just the lack of loneliness. The kids getting to see both their mothers as fuller, more complicated beings. Brianna and Mallory seeing their mom with someone who respects her, appreciates her, and expects the kids to do the same. Coyote and Bud seeing their mom with someone who honors her, expects good things from her, and expects the kids to take her seriously, too.

- Symphony no. 7 “Leningrad”! my all time favourite piece, written about the siege on Leningrad, mocks Stalin/Hitler a tad, overall beautiful!! my favourite recording is Chicago Symphony by Bernstein. also HIGHLY recommend the novel “Symphony for the City of the Dead” about this track because WOW

- Cello concerto no. 1! i’m a huuuge fan of Sol Gabetta’s recording of this!

- string quartet no. 8! extremely riddled with the DSCH motif, a tune dmitri used to encode his name into his music. it’s speculated he did this in case his name was ever wiped from his music, as could have happened easily via Stalin. some also speculate this track as a sort of suicide note (it’s not tho)

- Symphony no. 13 “Babi Yar”! yall this symphony makes my Cry, because of its subject matter. wow. about this symphony, shosty spoke my favourite quote ever: “Art destroys silence.”

- viola sonata! last piece written by shosty before he died, and boy its eerie. Very elegant though.

- Jazz suite 2: includes the v popular waltz 2, but the whole suite is worth a listen. is it jazz? idk, discuss.

- symphony no. 5! i love it almost as much as symphony no. 7, but they have very different vibes and were written is very different point in Shosty’s life. I recommend looking into it! the context around shosty pieces always enhance them

This weeks readings and in-class discussions reminded me of my family’s history in the Lower East side of New York. Our discussion of the rise and fall of ethnic neighborhoods and the gentrification that assimilates them into the larger city is applicable to the Jewish LES. It was once a thoroughly Jewish neighborhood, the center of Jewish culture in NYC, and also where my Grandfather grew up. His father founded Bernstein’s on Essex Street, a kosher deli and Chinese food restaurant (the world’s first!) and hence a Jewish identity that physically linked to the LES was central to his life.

As we discussed in class, neighborhoods like these don’t often last forever, and certainly don’t remain undiluted. The grander winds of the NYC real estate market and the demands of new residents fueled new housing development and the diversification of cultural fixtures (such as restaurants) in the neighborhood. Also as discussed in class, a rising tide does not lift all boats—just those with local real estate interests. Luckily, Sol, my great grandfather, was invested in the real estate above and around his restaurant. When the doors of Bernstein’s on Essex sadly closed, he was able to parlay his interests into a real estate career, redeveloping a building that served as a cornerstone to the community and our family into a larger apartment building. Ironically, my cousin lives in Essex street today, but the neighborhood has come a ways from the Jewish epicenter of NYC it used to be. The effects of the urbanization life cycle we have discussed in class certainly did not exclude the LES. Now, trendy restaurants, hotels, and clubs dot the street corners where Jewish businesses and families once thrived.
