Values below 7 signify acidity, while values above 7 indicate alkalinity. The pH scale is logarithmic, meaning each whole number change represents a tenfold difference in acidity or alkalinity. In simpler terms, a soil pH of 5 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 6.

Healthy soil pH is the foundation of a thriving garden. Find the balance, and your plants will flourish.

Understanding pH is important in soil science because it influences many soil properties, including nutrient availability, microbial activity, and plant growth. For instance, blueberries, azaleas, and rhododendrons thrive in more acidic soils with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5, while some ornamental plants and vegetables can tolerate slightly alkaline soils up to a pH of 7.5 or even 8.0.

How to Check pH in Soil? There are several ways to measure soil pH, ranging from simple DIY methods to professional testing:

pH Test Strips: You can purchase these at most garden centers. Simply mix a soil sample with distilled water, dip the test strip, and compare the color change to a pH chart.

Noticed some yellowing of a few of my rise leaves. Turned out to be black spit fungus (treatable with a mix of water, non-bleach dish soap & baking soda), but just to be safe I also tested to soil pH with vinegar. #chemistry #gardening #soilph #acidic #vinegar

Test your soil pH using litmus paper

I have read some comments saying that testing soil pH levels using vinegar and baking soda are not reliable. I will try using litmus paper instead.

Step 1: Get a sample of your soil from each sack then add distilled water until muddy.

Step 2: Touch the Litmus paper with the soil-water solution.

Step 3: Match your Litmus paper to the pH scale

My results:

Blue litmus paper turns red under acidic conditions and red litmus paper turns blue under basic or alkaline conditions.

This shows that my soil from both sacks has a neutral pH.

How to test your soil pH levels without a kit

You will need the following:

Step 1: Collect samples from different sacks of soil.

Step 2: Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the soil to one container from each sack.

Note: If it fizzes then it means you have alkaline soil, most likely with a pH between 7 and 8.

Step 3: Add distilled water to the soil until muddy, then add 1/2 cup of baking soda.

Note: If it fizzes then it means you have alkaline soil, most likely with a pH between 5 and 6.

If your soil (like mine) doesn’t react at all it is neutral with a pH of 7.
