"Wakhri (One of a Kind)"
Despite the repetitive nature of thematic bullet points, it's refreshing to see such a spirited female perspective represented in Pakistani cinema.
There’s a powerful effectiveness that flows from director and co-writer Iram Parveen Bilal‘s “Wakhri (One of a Kind),” a story that benefits from its strong female voice on the page and behind the camera. The film expresses the complexities surrounding women’s roles and their treatment in contemporary Pakistani society, wrapped within the harrowing journey of a widowed school teacher thrust into…

Joyland (2022), Saim Sadiq’s crushing debut and the first Pakistani film to be shortlisted for the Oscars, is imbued with a crisis of space. There never seems to be enough room. Not in the Rana household, the narrative kernel of the outing, where the intimacy of a married couple is compromised by the presence of a child sleeping with them. Not in the erotic theater, where a transgender dancer struggles to headline her own set. Not even in a close-walled residence, where an expression of female desire is brought to submission by an intrusive pair of eyes.
This paucity is physical and metaphorical; the urge to fit in within this lack is personal and private. Sadiq frames the story around this admixture of dearth and desire, arguing through his film the world’s tendency to amplify the need to belong while designing it as a cautionary tale of belonging.
Written by Sadiq and Maggie Briggs, Joyland focuses on a Lahore-based middle-class family. It is helmed by a wheelchair-addled patriarch and includes his two sons, Saleem (Sohail Sameer) and Haider (Ali Junejo). Each is starkly different than the other. The former is an alpha male, eager to extend his lineage with a son. Haider, shouldering responsibilities at home, is diffident. Even their marriages are contrasting. The relationship between Saleem and Nucchi (Sarwat Gilani) brims with inequality, no different from an orthodox union. Haider and Mumtaz (Rasti Farooq) are close. She works at a beauty parlor, he is unemployed. Their alliance, largely asexual in nature, comes across as consensual companionship. It’s why when Haider is hired as a background dancer at an erotic theater and his father decides for Mumtaz to quit her job, she looks to him for support. Haider opposes but gives in.
Since its premiere at Cannes in 2022, the film has been making waves for its LGBTQ+ themes, the appeal accentuated by the first-ever inclusion of a transgender actor (Alina Khan) in a major Pakistani feature although the country legally recognized the community in 2009. A detail such as this and the narrative shift which enfolds Haider falling for the character, Biba preempts the transgressive love story to hijack the main plot. Love, after all, has traditionally served as the text for conflict and subtext for approval. The filmmaker’s brilliance lies in bypassing tropes to render a critique of the cornering labels of identity.
Subjected to humiliation, Biba yearns for gender-affirming surgery to approximate her true identity. Joyland acknowledges her desire but also examines the stifling existence of those who already are. Mumtaz becomes the face of oppression. On paper, she’s who Biba wants to be — a woman who enjoys social acceptance. Except, the jagged edges of gender have bruised Mumtaz. Haider is no less wounded from being emasculated for his gentility. Through assured filmmaking and compelling performances, Sadiq highlights the restrictions embedded in the coveted idea of belonging.
During its runtime, Joyland unfolds as a reiteration of patriarchy that necessitates performing gender, and, thus, robs joy of inhabiting it. The film emerges as distinctly South Asian with a universal core, espousing a cogent commentary: When the world is attuned to defining identity in boxes, there will never be enough space. In such a case, Sadiq insists, the desire to belong is fated to remain as a longing to be.

Behind the Scenes: Sohail Sen’s Creative Process
Sohail Sen, a name synonymous with soulful melodies and versatile compositions, is a prominent figure in Bollywood’s music industry. Born into a family deeply rooted in music, Sohail’s journey from a young enthusiast to an acclaimed music director is nothing short of inspirational. His story is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and relentless effort. This article delves into the formative years of Sohail Sen, shedding light on his musical lineage, early influences, and the challenges he overcame to carve his niche in the Bollywood music scene.
The Gift of Legacy: A Musical Family
Sohail Sen’s musical journey began long before he was born. He hails from a lineage of celebrated musicians. His father, Sameer Sen, was one half of the renowned music director duo Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen, known for crafting memorable Bollywood tracks in the 1990s. Adding to this legacy, Sohail’s grandfather, Shambhu Sen, was a distinguished classical musician and singer. Growing up in an environment filled with the rhythms of tabla and the melodies of classical ragas, Sohail was immersed in music from an early age.
From the age of six, Sohail displayed an innate talent for music. His father introduced him to the tabla, an instrument he quickly mastered. Over the years, his musical repertoire expanded to include the piano, percussion, and a host of other instruments. This early exposure to various instruments laid the foundation for his future as a versatile composer.
The Early Years: Learning and Experimenting
Under the tutelage of his grandfather, Sohail delved into the intricacies of classical music. These lessons not only honed his skills but also instilled in him a deep respect for India’s rich musical heritage. However, Sohail’s curiosity extended beyond classical music. He was equally fascinated by contemporary genres, often experimenting with blending traditional Indian sounds with modern elements.
Sohail’s early experiments in music weren’t limited to practice sessions. At the tender age of 13, he composed music for a telefilm titled Roshni. Featuring playback by the legendary singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, this project was a significant milestone in his young career. It showcased his ability to compose professionally and hinted at the brilliance he would later bring to Bollywood.
Challenges and Early Struggles
Like many budding artists, Sohail’s journey to success was not without hurdles. Breaking into the highly competitive Bollywood music industry required not just talent but also perseverance and adaptability. His debut as a music director for the film Sirf (2008) was a modest beginning. Despite the film failing to make a mark at the box office, it served as a valuable learning experience for Sohail. He realized the importance of aligning his music with the narrative of a film while retaining his unique touch.
The Turning Point: What’s Your Raashee?
Sohail’s big break came when acclaimed director Ashutosh Gowariker recognized his potential and entrusted him with the music for What’s Your Raashee? (2009). This project was a monumental challenge — it required Sohail to compose 13 distinct tracks, each representing a zodiac sign. The task demanded immense creativity and effort, but Sohail rose to the occasion.
The soundtrack of What’s Your Raashee? was met with critical acclaim. Critics and audiences alike praised Sohail for his ability to capture the essence of each zodiac sign through music. This project not only established him as a talented composer but also opened doors to more significant opportunities in Bollywood.
Lessons from Sohail’s Early Journey
Sohail Sen’s early career offers invaluable lessons for aspiring musicians. One of the key takeaways is the importance of embracing one’s roots. By blending classical influences with contemporary trends, Sohail created a style that resonated with a diverse audience. Additionally, his willingness to take on challenging projects early in his career demonstrated his confidence and commitment to growth.
Another crucial aspect of his journey is his adaptability. Whether composing for a small-budget film like Sirf or a high-profile project like What’s Your Raashee?, Sohail tailored his music to suit the requirements of each project. This ability to adapt, while staying true to his artistic identity, set him apart in the competitive industry.
Conclusion
Sohail Sen early life and career illustrate that success in the arts often stems from a combination of talent, hard work, and the ability to overcome challenges. From learning the tabla as a child to composing critically acclaimed soundtracks, his journey is a source of inspiration for anyone passionate about music. His story reminds us that while the path to success may be filled with obstacles, a strong foundation, and unwavering dedication can help navigate the toughest of challenges.

Ali Junejo in Joyland (Saim Sadiq, 2022)
Cast: Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq, Alina Khan, Sarwat Gilani, Salmaan Peerzada, Sohail Sameer, Sania Saeed, Ramiz Law. Screenplay: Saim Sadiq, Maggie Briggs. Cinematography: Joe Saade. Film editing: Saim Sadiq, Jasmin Tenucci. Music: Abdullah Siddiqui.
Haider (Ali Junejo) is a milquetoast, serving as factotum to everyone in the large household in Lahore, including his father (Salmaan Peerzada), his older brother, Saleem (Sohail Sameer), his sister-in-law, Nucchi (Sarwat Gilani), and their daughters. While his wife, Mumtaz (Rasti Farooq), works, he stays home, unable to find a job. When we first see Haider he is being pressed into service to take Nucchi to the hospital on his motorbike because she is about to give birth to another daughter. And then things change: Haider finds a job, and it's Mumtaz's turn to stay home -- though she really doesn't want to -- and cater to the family's needs. And so begins Saim Sadiq's prize-winning debut feature, a comic story that turns tragic in its course. Haider's chief problem is with the job he has found: backup dancer to a performer in a musical revue. Her name is Biba (Alina Khan), and she's transgender. At first, Haider tells the family that he's a stage manager, but the truth emerges. Everyone realizes that there's not much they can do about it as long as he's bringing in money, so he's allowed to continue. Haider is no dancer, but under Biba's tutelage he gets by, and soon he becomes a favorite of hers. There the complications really begin. Joyland reminded me of the Italian comedies of the 1960s by directors like Pietro Germi and Mario Monicelli that centered on a traditional society's conflict with contemporary ways of looking at the world. Sadiq's Pakistan is like their Sicily, but Joyland turns serious in ways that those films don't. It's a film that maybe doesn't quite set up its turn from comic to serious well enough, but the splendid performances make up for its flaws.

Behind Amazon Manager's Murder, 'Maya Gang' Led By 18-Year-Old
Mohammad Sameer alias Maya recently turned 18. He was involved in at least four murders as a juvenile, police have found.
New Delhi: Four murder cases, a dozen gang members, Insta reels with guns and filmy dialogues — the prime accused in the midnight murder of Amazon manager Harpreet Gill is an 18-year-old like none other.
The bio on his Instagram profile, with over 2,000 followers, reads, “Naam badnaam, pata Kabristan, umra jeene ki, shauk marne ka — roughly meaning, “I am infamous, the graveyard is my address, It’s my age to live, but I wish to die”.
On scrolling down, you find Mohammad Sameer alias Maya posing for photographs in flashy clothes and sporting long hair. The photos suggest his love to be clicked. So far, it’s a profile of a teen who loves to dress up and pose.
But click on the highlights, and you are in for a shocker. One reel captioned “jail” captures several youngsters behind bars, another shows Maya posing with and firing guns. There is one which is captioned “Maya Gang” and shows about a dozen teenagers. This is not a random group of teenagers wanting to show off, but a gang that has terrorised Northeast Delhi, according to police.
The gang calls its self “Maya Gang” after its leader. Maya and his 18-year-old associate Bilal Gani have been arrested in connection with the murder of Gill and police are looking for the other accused.
Maya, who recently turned 18, was involved in at least four murders as a juvenile, police have found. His associate, Gani, turned 18 this Sunday and was involved in a murder and a robbery case last year. Gani was sent to a Children’s Observation home, but he managed to come out and had been working at a welding shop.
While Harpreet died on the spot, his uncle Govind, 32, is fighting for his life after Maya allegedly shot them in the head.
The shooting, police have found, was the fallout of a road rage incident.
Around 10.30 pm on Tuesday, Harpreet and Govind were passing through a narrow lane on a bike, police have found. Accused Maya, Gani and their associates Sohail (23), Mohammad Junaid (23) and Adnan (19) were returning from a party on two scooters. The two-wheelers faced off in the narrow lane. An altercation began on who would give way. The argument snowballed into a fight that ended in Maya allegedly shooting Harpreet and Govind.
The arrests were made after police scanned footage from a CCTV camera in the lane. The visuals show two accused, their faces covered, on a scooter.
Police said efforts are being made to catch the other accused and further probe is on.
