The disappearance of Hilkka Laitinen
On 19th of July 1972 49 year old Hilkka Tuulikki Laitinen had just finished her work shift in a café that is located in the same building as Hilkka and her husband’s home. She informed her employer she’s going to rest in her home. Her husband, 53 year old Urho Laitinen arrived home around 3 pm and noticed his wife resting on their sofa. Around 5 pm Urho was painting a fence outside when Hilkka came and asked if he could drive her to local dressmaker. She had plans to go to fit her new pantsuit on. The trip from their home, to the dressmakers place and back home would’ve only taken about 20 minutes, but Urho denied the request.
At 6 pm Urho got visitors when his friend Matti arrived with his son. The men drank couple beers and then went swimming because the little boy requested. Later they arrived back at Urho and Hilkka’s home. Hilkka was nowhere to be seen. Matti and his son left soon.
At 6:45 pm Urho got a phonecall from Hilkka’s daughter Leila (from her previous marriage) and she was asking where her mother is. Urho just simply said Hilkka was visiting the dressmaker. When Hilkka’s sister heard the answer she asked Leila to call the police. Around 9 pm Leila called again and Urho said he doesn’t know where Hilkka is. This made Leila extremely anxious and worried and she started to feel something terrible must’ve happened.
The missing persons report was left to police the next day but the police didn’t take it seriously. They claimed a person is allowed to be missing for 7 days before the missing persons report can be done. During the next day Urho goes to work like nothing happened and after work he spends time in the town with Riitta, local hair stylist. When the café owner calls to ask why Hilkka hadn’t arrived to her work shift, Urho coldly tells he doesn’t know where Hilkka is. Urho however calls the police during that day informing that his wife did disappear yesterday and he hasn’t seen her since.
Hilkka and Urho’s daughters Satu and Anja soon return home. They cut their holiday trip short hearing their mother has not been seen in couple days. After arriving home Satu and Anja pass by their parent’s bedroom, noticing the door ajar. They peek inside and see their father sleeping with someone who is not Hilkka. Turns out it was Riitta, the hair stylist.
They inspect the apartment finding 3 coffee cups from the kitchen table. Their mother Hilkka is very pedantic and they know she would not have left dishes lying around. And also it raises the question, to whom does the third cup belong to? They also find a bloody bed cover from the bathroom. They are very used to clean environment as their mother has taught them, so they ignorantly wash the cover, possibly cleaning away potential evidence. Urho told them it had blood on it because a cat had given birth. Also interestingly a walk in closet downstairs is locked which it usually isn’t. However on the next day it can be opened again and when Hilkka’s daughters go through Hilkka’s clothes they notice nothing is missing.
When a week had passed the missing persons report was finally made and the police started to investigate the disappearance.
The police searched the apartment but didn’t find any clues. There were no blood around or anything. The bloody bed cover wasn’t investigated since it had been washed and also gone missing somehow.
It is found out that Hilkka and Urho had changed their testament before moving to their apartment. If they were to divorce Hilkka would inherit everything but if one of them would die the living partner would inherit everything. Hilkka had expressed to Leila that she had been pressured to the change.
A week before the disappearance Urho arranged a fun weekend with family. Urho, Hilkka their daughters Anja and Leila with their husbands and other people gathered together to Punkkilanharju camping site to spend time together. There Urho announced some news: he and Hilkka would make a long trip to Norway at the end of July. He also made everybody think their marriage and life at that was going well. It did not go through as such since for example Leila and Anja were very confused why they are even going to the camping site and Leila even said Urho’s fun and caring behaviour was clearly acting. She expressed how fake it was and not fun at all.
On May 1975 Urho was arrested. The police suspected he had something to do with Hilkka’s disappearance. The police found out that on the day of Hilkka’s disappearance Leila’s aunt Helena Tontti had gotten a weird phone call. Nothing was said on the call but Tontti could hear weird rumbling, rattle of dishes and what could be described as the sound of combat. The call lasted for 10 minutes and the police are still not sure from where the call came and who was the caller. The police also found out that the holiday trip to Norway was not true. Urho did however have plans on going to a holiday but with Riitta, not Hilkka.
No one was really surprised that Urho had been arrested. He wasn’t very liked around the town they lived in and everyone had been kind of like waiting for the arrest. Everyone thought it could’ve happened earlier. Urho wasn’t cooperative during the interrogations and was even caught telling couple lies. He seemed like he did not want to help the police with investigation.
On the night after the disappearance (when Urho had been caught sleeping with Riitta) someone had seen a car resembling Urho’s drive to his work place. Urho owned a black Plymouth Valiant passenger car and it very possibly was the only one in that quite small town. This sighting led to police investigating Urho’s work place but they did not find any clues. Something weird did happen in Urho’s work place after the disappearance as well: during night time someone arranged rocks in a form of a grave, put flowers on top of it and left a note saying “here rests”. When Urho saw it, he became furious destroying the grave and throwing the flowers away. Leila’s husband who was with Urho during the time said it was very weird behaviour from Urho, who usually was very calm and reserved. This outburst was the only time during the whole investigation when Urho got nervous.
On 1975 a clairvoyant claimed he knew where Hilkka’s body was. Digger was ordered to Hilkka and Urho’s home and dug the yard from three different places. There were reporters and locals around excitedly waiting for some clues and findings, but in the end nothing was discovered.
On 9th of August 1983 Hilkka was pronounced dead. Her funeral was in October. The date of the death is the day she had disappeared. After that Hilkka’s wealth was divided and shortly after that Urho and Riitta moved to Norway. On July 1985 on the day that in other circumstances would’ve been Urho and Hilkka’s 40th wedding anniversary, Urho suddenly died of a heart attack. To this day Hilkka’s disappearance is officially unsolved and her body has not been found. Finns mostly think Urho did kill Hilkka and that this case will never be solved since the only person who probably could’ve told the truth, Riitta has also died.

The last time we visited Soar Mill Cove, it was a very different experience for us. Grace was 8 years old and, as a result, we were able to do things a little bit differently. Meals were a bit quieter and we had a little more free rein to do what we wanted.
This time around, we able to look at our stay from a different angle. Taking a small child away isn’t really a holiday. A break from the old routine is though – and the staff and accommodation at Soar Mill Cove, a luxury hotel in Devon, take all of this into account.
Family Friendly Rooms at Soar Mill Cove Hotel
We were appointed the Makepeace Suite. It felt like quite an honour to have the room which had the name of the proprietors on it. We were impressed by the layout and amount of space we had. As you entered, there was a long hallway which stretched out to your left and directly in front of you was the children’s bedroom which had two single beds and a cotbed in the corner.
As you walked down the hallway, there were two large walk-in cupboards on your right which contained extra pillows and blankets and a safe. The next door on your right was a large bathroom and ahead of you was the main bedroom with a large Queensized bed, a coffee table with a bowl of fruit, sofa (which I believe was also a bed), a dressing table and high unit which had tea and coffee making facilities on the top of it (sensibly out of small fingers reach!). There was also a wall-mounted television and patio doors which took you onto your own private section of the gardens with patio furniture and a couple of loungers.
Take a look at my Facebook Live video to see the layout in full:
Or watch our video to take a full look around the hotel:
Dining with Children at Soar Mill Cove
Despite the fact that Soar Mill Cove have two AA Culinary Excellence rosettes, they are extremely accommodating of families and small children in their restaurant.
You can choose for your children to have high tea in the cafe between 5 and 6pm or children can eat in the restaurant from 6pm and choose 2 courses from the menu if dinner is inclusive. Children under 14 are not allowed in the restaurant after 8.45pm.
We opted to eat at 6.30pm both evenings. It was a little drawn out for Rex but we managed to keep him going and, because we were out of our normal routine anyway, he didn’t seem to mind.
The Food
I can distinctly recall the food from last time around – because it was so good. They didn’t disappoint this time either. There is a supplement for some items on the menu and, because I wanted to try the scallops, I opted to pay that on the second night.
Here are some of the dishes which we all tried.
Jens Gin gravlax with dill, horseradish cream and baby capers on toasted sourdough
Crab bisque with brandy and tarragon and gruyere toast
Salcombe Scallops Pan roasted with slow cooked pork belly, parsnip puree and parsnip crisps
English Asparagus with Parma Ham and Hollandaise Sauce
Handpicked Salcombe cracked crab claw linguini with chili, parsley and lemon
Cornish hake with parmesan and herb crunch, spring onion creamed potatoes, £23.00 rainbow chard and white wine butter sauce
Braised ox cheek with potato puree, shallots, bacon, honey roasted heritage carrots and red wine jus
Confit leg of Creedy Carver duckling, baby kalettes, gratin dauphinoise, caramelised apple and mixed peppercorn sauce
Fillet of Pork Tenderloin wrapped in Pancetta with Apples, Black Pudding, Peppercorn Sauce and Gratin Dauphinoise
Devonshire sausages with mashed potatoes and gravy (Childrens Menu)
Fish Goujons with chips and peas (Childrens Menu)
Sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla bean ice cream
Sharp Lemon Tart with Lemon Meringue Ice Cream
Rich chocolate tart with pistachio ice cream, mascarpone cream and chocolate sauce
Strawberry and raspberry pavlova, first created by the original Mrs Makepeace, a trained pastry Chef, for Audrey Hepburn
I have to admit that I did find all the food quite pricey. It is a 2 rosette AA restaurant but I felt that they could have been a little more thoughtful with the children’s menu where the main courses were £12 each.
Breakfast
Breakfast was a leisurely affair. There were plenty of juices, cereal, toast and warm croissants on offer with homemade marmalade and jam. You could also order a full Devonshire breakfast, a Veggie breakfast, smoked kippers or mackerel as well as a bacon or sausage sandwich and boiled egg and soldiers.
Other Facilities
When we visited, it was sunny on the first day and then a bit overcast on the second and third days. However, there is plenty to do at Soar Mill Cove, whatever the weather.
Firstly there is a games room and play area neatly tucked away at the back of the hotel near the car park. I say play area, there is only a little slide and outdoor playset for children. There is also a hut housing a pool table, box of Duplo bricks and a dartboard. Definitely somewhere to hang out on a rainy day.
There is a great indoor pool for the whole family to use, complete with non-slip mats around the edge. You are provided with towels in your room especially for the pool so no need to use your room or beach towels. Connected to the pool is a Beauty Spa. I was supposed to review some treatments but, alas, this wasn’t to be. Soar Mill Cove sound like they have had their fair share of bad luck with therapists. A new one was due to start just after we left so I do hope it is working out for them.
There is also an outdoor tennis court and small children’s playground adjacent to the hotel as well as plenty of outside space to run around in.
On top of this, there is a lovely large lounge which holds books, magazines, a chess board and a number of other board games.
Extra Touches
There are many little extra touches to be found at Soar Mill Cove. On arrival you are given a voucher for a cream tea which Ross, Grace, Rex and I took in the lounge once we had settled in. It was a very relaxing place to sit and look at the beautiful view. Once we had finished, Grace and Ross had a game of chess whilst I pushed Rex around in his pushchair (hoping he would have a sleep!).

If you have a dog (or dogs), they can also holiday at Soar Mill Cove. All you need to do is ask for a dog-friendly room.
There are tea and coffee making facilities in the room but you have access to fresh milk which is put out on reception every evening.
There is a free DVD library with plenty of films available.
Things to Do in the Local Area
Staying at Soar Mill Cove means that you have plenty of activities on your doorstep. Whilst we were there we paid a visit to the National Marine Aquarium which was just an hours drive away in Plymouth.
Attending the shark talk at @nationalmarineaquarium Spot the shark, stingrays and turtle!

There is also the local seaside town of Salcombe, where you can take the South Sands Ferry and, on arrival at South Sands Beach, you will be met by the famous ‘sea tractor’ which travels out in the water to greet you.
Soar Mill Cove is also situated on the beautiful SW Coast path. It is quite a trek down to the Cove from the hotel so we didn’t do it this time. We highly recommend it though. There are plenty of maps and details about local walks in your room.
If you are going on a day trip, you are also able to order picnics in advance. Starting at £15 per person , we couldn’t really justify the expense – but great if you want to push the boat out (possibly, literally!) for a special occasion.
For more details of what is local then take a look at the Soar Mill Cove website.
Regular Visitors
During our last stay I spoke to a man who was a regular. This time around I did the same with another by the name of John. He and his extended family all arrange regularly to meet up at the Cove. Their last night was our first. We first spoke to him whilst we were having our cream tea in the lounge and he was full of praise for the property and staff. He and his family also sat next to us at dinner and all of them were clearly enjoying themselves. It is heartening to see that Soar Mill Cove is so loved by so many.
Why Visit?
There is such a sense of ‘family’ when you walk through the door at Soar Mill Cove. They clearly have longevity with their staff which, to me, is always a good sign. It says something when the pot-washer has worked his way up to hotel manager.
The staff are all friendly and welcoming and make sure you feel comfortable. The location is clean and tidy and you never feel that the children should be seen and not heard.
It isn’t easy to balance luxury with family when it comes to hotel stays – but I am pleased to say that I believe Soar Mill Cove have got it just right.
Soar Mill Cove still have rooms available during the summer holidays. For more details, please visit the Soar Mill Cove Hotel website. Soar Mill Cove Hotel are also on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
We were provided with a two-night stay at Soar Mill Cove Hotel in Devon in return for this review. Departure
(If you haven’t done so already, you may want to see the preface.)
Day One - 28/02/18
Dear Diary ~
10:00 am.
Having finally left my little flat, quit my job and said farewell to my friends, I’ve set off. I have a backpack with some basic things I might need, including a small digital camera. The camera is important, as I can look at the photos I have and use the subjects as a disguise to shapeshift to. If Axel sees me coming, he may not believe that I’m me. There are also plenty of hunters (along with a few vampires) wanting my head, so perhaps my own form is a little risky. I’m writing this on the bus to Ekkionport Train Station, as I’m rather certain that Axel wouldn’t stay in the city. In fact, I’m almost certain that he’s left South Wales entirely, so I plan on beginning my search in his favourite place - Cornwall. The bus is arriving outside the station now, so I’ll end this quickly.
11:17 am.
I’m now on the train. The train tickets are cheaper if you’re under eighteen, and shapeshifters are at the advantage there. You could be in your fifties and take on the form of a child. However, not many shifters live to more than fifty, as we have a shortened lifespan. I’m only twenty-four, so I have a while to go yet.
Anyhow, I bought my ticket, only to find that the next train wouldn’t leave until quarter past eleven, which left me quite a while to do what I liked - in my case, that’s time-wasting around the train station and studying the conversations and behavior of various humans. The more attention you pay to them, the better you are at pretending to be them. And I have to learn a lot of different dialects and behavior patterns for my lifestyle.
After taking a few pictures from the bridge, I bought a cup of tea in a small (and rather expensive) coffee shop. I then had a pleasant conversation with a kind old lady that ended up lasting half an hour. She was very passionate about the history of train stations, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this one’s past. For example, she told me that, twenty-five years ago (beat me by a year), a group of vandals painted all of the benches in the station bright pink overnight, which ended up staying like that for a year, until another group painted them all navy again. She explained to me that she has a hobby of going on holiday for a few days and learning all about the history of the station in that area. The lady then boarded a train for Yorkshire, and I went into the disabled toilets to shift. No one questions it if anyone goes in there, and no one notices it if a different person comes out than first went in. I may look a little young for my age, but most people might question it if I claim to be under eighteen. I shifted to a teenage boy of about sixteen or seventeen (likely the latter) and waited around for a bit, before buying myself another cup of tea and boarding the train.
Here I am now, on my way to Cornwall in search of my friend, and I don’t have much else to do. The train should arrive in Bristol at around midday, then I’ll have to get on another train to Plymouth, where I’ll arrive at around half two, then Plymouth to St Erth at around five, then from St Erth to Newquay. By that time, it’ll be around seven in the evening and I’ll either have to sleep as a bird again (which is not fun), or I’ll have to find a cheap hotel I can stay in overnight. There is a Journeybreak hotel (one of those cheap ones you find all over the UK) near the station, and I know how cheap they can be, so that could be an option. It depends how late I’ll get there and how full the hotel is. I have a murder mystery book to read on the train, so hopefully that will pass the time.
12:39 pm.
I’m on the second train now. I had to change forms again, as I don’t wish to be followed by anyone who might be following me from Ekkionport, but I should stay in this one for a while to get used to keeping up an act for a long while. This one is female, particularly short, but she looks like the sort of person that you don’t want to mess with. I practiced the “teenage death-glare” in the mirror for a short while before buying a sandwich and some crisps from a little shop just outside the station. I then boarded the train and I now have my lunch to eat. Tuna sandwiches are the best, especially if you put a few ready salted crisps in between the bread and the tuna. I got some funny looks for that, which allowed my to utilise my new death stare. I’ll play with that a bit later.
1:24 pm.
I finished my lunch over the course of half an hour, mainly distracted by the couple sitting behind me. They seemed to be arguing quite relentlessly about who should do the laundry. The man seemed to think that women should do all of the housework, but the woman stuck up for herself rather impressively. She said to him, and I quote, “If you could get your backside off the sofa when you get home from work, maybe you’d realise that you’re actually pretty lazy when it comes to most things other than watching telly!” Good for her. That bloke was a right idiot and she shouldn’t have to put up with him.
3:42 pm.
This train is a lot busier, and I struggled to find a seat. Luckily, a boy of around my form’s age let me sit next to him. Apparently he liked the look of the girl whose form I’m still in, and he’s hopelessly trying to flirt. He seems like a decent guy, so maybe I’ll humour him for a while.
5:14 pm.
I had some pasta in a tiny little cafe near the station in St Erth, then I hurried for my train to Newquay. There aren’t many people on this train, so I’ll get some good reading time in. So far in the book I’m reading - The Murder Under The Bridge - the protagonist, Mickey, is beginning to get suspicious of his girlfriend, Sally. It looks like she did it, but she’s trying to convince him that it was the person they’re staying with, Ian. It’s a brilliant book.
7:49 pm.
I managed to get a room in the Journeybreak Hotel, albeit a manky one. It’s not very clean, but I don’t really mind. I just need rest, so I’ll go to bed at around eight. I’m glad to have finally arrived in Newquay, but I’ll need to begin my search early tomorrow if I want a chance of finding Axel. The longer it is before I find a trace of him, the harder it will become to find him.
It’s about time I put my diary away for the night, so this is Victor Wolfe signing out.
