The really cool thing about audiobooks, especially for Star Wars audiobooks, is that you can layer in sound effects and music.
For Star Wars, that means you have lightsabers and blaster fire going in the background, the opening theme rioting at the beginning of the book, and the different musical themes throughout the trilogies playing at relevant instances. Lightsabers go vwoom and the music soars etc etc
[Spoilers for Star Wars: Dark Disciple]
In Dark Disciple, Quinlan Vos and Asajj Ventress team up to assassinate Count Dooku, and she trains him in the dark side. He eventually falls, but he swears to her that he’s fine and sound of mind.
The thing is — and you wouldn’t get this in just the physical book — is that as he’s vowing this to her, the music is saying the exact opposite. They put in the background the Imperial March!!!
I first heard it I was like what!!! What!!!That’s so clever!!!!
The musical legacy that Star Wars has and the unique format that audiobooks live in allows for this awesome creativity!! And it’s text enriching!!! It’s so cool!!!

OKAY, journal blog post of the day!
first day of college at twenty-six!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so today was. . . kinda great?? a lot, but super exciting and productive.
SO glad i looked through the online course rss last night and that my friend and i went and found our classrooms in advance last week.
bc of those things i was able to help some other students set up their microscopes for our lab, and then show some of the students from my lab class who are also in my lecture where the lecture classroom is (bc it’s in a different building.)
the lab also has several reptiles all named after lord of the rings characters! Merry, Pippin, and Frodo are leopard geckos, Gandalf is a bearded dragon, and Bilbo is a ball python!
i also met a super nice upper level bio prof named Michelle, bc someone accidentally kicked over a trash bin and i was helping her clean it up, and she was SO SWEET!
anyway after that i almost fell asleep in my lecture (RIP) but it was all pretty basic so it wasn’t too bad.
then i went and found my friend in the library, found and borrowed my HUGE textbook for the semester, went to accessibility services to book a follow up appointment, rented out a locker, went with my friend to get our gym passes, and then got Tim Hortons and chilled with them for a bit.
after that i was supposed to have one more class but there was a message sent out yesterday that the prof has covid so there will be no class this week, but I went to the room just in case, and about a third of the class was there bc they hadn’t checked the message, so i was able to let them know and they all seemed really nice.
two of them followed me out and asked for my help, bc they were waitlisted for the class and didn’t have the prof’s email but wanted to let her know that they had shown up, so i helped them out with that and they were super friendly! we also chatted about audiobooks and the libby app.
overall, like, 10/10 day, i’m soaring on this dopamine dude ✨

10 Things That Never Happened
alright so in the last couple weeks I have now read and listened to the audiobook for this and I cannot get over how amazing they are!!!
I finished the book like a week and a half ago and was all oh I should reread this but then decided instead to listen to the audiobook and I cannot get over how freakin' amazing the audiobook was!!!!!
I loved the book so much it was truly an amazing work and just gave me all the feels - the book is just so lush and almost spellbinding while I was reading - definitely did not want to put it down
the audiobook took me to a whole other level - I had planned to just listen to it here and there while working out walking or just whatever no rush - but when I started listening yesterday I could just not stop for long - a few breaks here and there when needed to but otherwise I listened most of the day until completion - the audiobook was transcending - it sent me soaring through the stratosphere in ways I just did not expect but am so damn happy for now!!!!
I am so damn happy to have this story in my life in both forms ❤️❤️❤️❤️

One Final Cross
A streak of fire. I look to the east, expecting nothing but sunrise.
Then I see it.
My heart stammers, tripping over my ribs.
I drop my toasted banana bread.
“Finally. After years of searching.”
These words hardly stir a fogged breath, my chilled lips parting but a hair’s breadth to release them as I stumble from my paltry camp. A one-person tent and a frying pan are all I need. With no company but the snow-capped mountain peaks, there is little need to burden one’s pack with the fine china.
Had only I thought to burden myself with a spare roll of film.
I hurry to a higher altitude, my boots slipping and sliding over hidden icy dangers as the need for a better look strangles my soul, leaving me gasping. Though that could be attributed to the elevation. Behind me, I hear my tent strain against its poles in the alpine gale as the narrow whit of smoke from my fire whips into oblivion.
I lurch to a halt. Above me, the skies sing a pale blue-grey hue. The sun has not yet dawned a new morning over the horizon.
I care not for the horizon.
Adorned in crimson-gold plumage worth all the ore hidden under my feet, a flock of phoenixes soar in a mythical show of pyrotechnic aerodynamics. My gaze unfolds over their fiery trails as the sky scorches in the flaming flock’s wake, more glorious than any eagle mixed up in a fireworks display. The birds’ melodic cries peal bright and clear. I listen, mesmerised. Their pure voices are bells and the mountains, a cathedral, a soaring monument to God.
Weary emotion wells in my eyes. Indeed, I have spent these past years well.
Now.
To business.
Slowly, fearing to blink and miss a moment of the rare spectacle, I draw from my belt pouch a worn scrap of parchment and my nub of a pencil. I roll out papery wrinkles with care and squat, my thigh being the nearest serviceable writing desk.
With reverence, I draw one final cross.
“Bingo.”
From mountaintops with fire-streaked skies to bathwater predicting the end of days, relax for a minute or two with your beverage of choice and dip into some fantasy flash fiction with Blue.
Listen to the audiobook version on YouTube @moonfeatherblue
youtube
Also available on Wattpad, Inkitt, and Scribble Hub. Eventually also on Tapas (once I figure out why the site doesn't like me) and my yet-to-exist website (when I eventually get on top of that) ~
Also... this should have been posted a few days ago. Apologies - Blue is a little more absentminded these days than usual.

If you, like most people, wonder how that could ever be a problem for a library, consider:
The reason: Digital books are extremely expensive for libraries, even though they’re generally cheaper than print books for an individual consumer.
"[Seattle Public's collection services manager Elena] Gutierrez pointed to Britney Spears’ 2023 memoir "The Woman In Me" as a prime example of the budget challenges that e-books pose. SPL paid the book’s publisher $17.81 for each physical copy it bought, a few dollars cheaper than what an individual would pay in a bookstore.
Electronic copies were a totally different story. The e-book and e-audiobook are about $17 for a consumer, but the library paid more than three times that price: $64.99 for an e-book and $59.99 for a digital audiobook.
Combine the increasing demand for digital books and the higher prices, and things add up quickly."
Answer: price gouging. Publishers are price gouging libraries.

Top 10 Reads: Q1 2023
Wow, the first quarter of the year is over! I hate being here, but we're still alive and when you're still alive there's still hope and yada yada yada. Keep breathing!
This is probably the longest I've gone without a reading slump. I feel like part of this is due to personal progress, as slumps often correspond with mental lows for me, but part of it also likely due to me embracing audiobooks. Curse everyone who said I'd like them being right the whole time!!!
Anyway, I liked a lot of books over the past three months. In fact, I loved many of them. For my monthly wrap-ups, I don't limit myself; I just list every book I rated 4/5 or above. Here, I challenged myself to stick to the ten that made me happiest. Some of them... are not out yet. But hey, what're you gonna do?
My only other rule: no repeat authors, and no listing them in order. I think I do have a #1 favorite out of these books, but I don't want to rank novels in order of preference.
Hotel of Secrets by Diana Biller.
Dude. This one took me by surprise. I'd never read Diana Biller before, and I was blown away by the richness of the setting--late nineteenth century Vienna--and the attention paid to the cast. A lot of good romances don't have great supporting casts; this one does, and they add to the fabric of the love story.
But at its heart, despite the somewhat ambiguous title, Hotel of Secrets is a true blue, swoony romance between a jaded woman consumed by keeping her family's hotel afloat, and a virginal spy who's always been able to keep feelings at arm's length... until he rescues her. Several times. The build up of tension between these characters is hot, it's romantic, and it's just so fucking satisfying when it boils over.
Lush Money by Angelina M. Lopez.
The best contemporaries are the ones that go full daytime soap, in my opinion. And by God, does this book go balls to the wall daytime. A ruthless billionaire heroine! A prince hero with a genius IQ and a devotion to GROWING GRAPES. A sex/marriage/baby deal!
This book has a lot going for it--a truly unique, "problematic" heroine who can't make herself commit to love, a slowburn punctuated by how intensely hot and heavy our leads get within the first few pages, and such a strong sense of the telenovela that you can vividly picture it playing out in your head. (Except. A lot more graphic than most telenovelas. Shoutout to the scene where our hero gets caught with his head between the heroine's legs. By the paparazzi.)
Mafia Madman by Mila Finelli.
Who was I before reading Mila Finelli? I don't know, and I don't care. Every book in her Kings of Italy series is an absolute killer (about killers) and you should read all of them ASAP. But Mafia Madman, for me, is the creme de la creme. It immediately soared into my top favorite reads ever, and I've had to physically stop myself from picking up my paperback and rereading my favorite scenes again.
It's just got everything--an absolutely insane hero, a heroine determined to break him as much as he's determined to break her, sex scenes that will melt your brain, and a deeply, highly satisfying grovel that gave me everything I could have asked for. For all that it's over the top and sexy and deranged, at the core of this story is two emotionally injured, twisted people finding each other... and realizing that they can't avoid being vulnerable with one another. No notes!
Then Came You by Lisa Kleypas.
I could have also included Again the Magic here, as I read both this year--but I wanted to stick to one. Then Came You is such an unsung hero of Kleypas's backlist, and not just because it features Derek Craven: The Early Years (though that is certainly a bonus--he's such a sad little baby in this one). The hero bUYS HER A BEAR in this book. Plus light bondage! What more can you ask for?
Then Came You is the kind of classic enemies to lovers story that built the foundation for Kleypas's later enemies to lovers classics like It Happened One Autumn. He's cold and mercenary and stubborn in his refusal to love, she's passionate and rebellious and the only person who can get under his skin. This woman literally shows up to a ball dressed to look like Eve--naked, but with a snake running up her body. And does he lose his shit the way you want? Even more so, actually. Not for nothing, but the setup is that he's courting her sister and she's trying to ruin the match. Yes, it does do that much, much better.
The Dragon and the Pearl by Jeannie Lin.
If there's one thing reading Jeannie Lin taught me, it's that Tang Dynasty China is the perfect setting for historical romance. The heavy rules of etiquette, the political strife to raise the stakes, those stakes forcing a capacity for ruthlessness. Here, she gives the perfect villain romance--bringing back the hot, scarred warlord just in time for a kidnapping plot that will render him completely emotionally overcome for a badass heroine.
But our heroine isn't a sword-wielding badass. She's a former emperor's concubine, renowned for her beauty and perfectly cultured. She wins with mind games and charm, and she's all too aware of how dangerous her hero is. The book is the story of two iron-willed people bending for each other, and falling prey to the worst thing that can happen to a couple of badasses: LOVE.
Something Spectacular by Alexis Hall (out 4/11/2023, full review to come).
I've become a huge fan of Alexis Hall's approach to historical romances. They're funny, they're super queer, and they are very, very romantic. Something Spectacular piggybacks off the laugh-a-minute Something Fabulous, giving us a story that is even more unique to the subgenre, and just a bit angstier, with a couple of nonbinary leads who connect over living in the gray of their binary society, before forging an emotional connection that.... did make me cry.
I also want to call out how hot this book is. One thing I've noticed about queer historicals especially is that they often sort of... soften the sexuality of their characters. Cut the passion in favor of good vibes. Which I get! But here you get the angst and you get the longing and you get exactly why Orfeo is renowned for their skills (beyond singing) across all of Europe. God, they're... a lot.
The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by K.J. Charles.
You know, initially I rated this book a 4.25/5, which is a very strong rating for me. I think I will actually go back and raise it, because I can't get this book out of my head. It's the marshy setting, the criminal element, the rich cast of characters, the "fine?"/"FINE!" push-pull of Joss fuckin' Doomsday and Gareth, a flop who is as relatable as he is messy.
Plus, the setup of this book is so original? Our heroes meet before it really kicks off, become hookup buddies, part on bad terms without knowing each other's proper names, and reunite when one is blackmailing the other in a court of law? Throw in a heavy dose of family drama, hot Illicit Affairs, and so much secondhand embarrassment I could've maybe died on the spot, and you have a winner.
Pippa and the Prince of Secrets by Grace Callaway.
This year, I got into Grace Callaway--and I'm so glad I did! Her books are fun and adventurous and super sexy... sexy in a way a lot of historicals aren't right now, unfortunately. They embody what I want out of a historical romance: high stakes love with a bit of wackiness and a hint of humor, plus bodice ripping.
What makes this book a bit more than all the others for me is the emotionality. All of Grace's books that I've read have emotion, but Pippa and Cull have true bittersweet angst. They knew each other as young teens; they had a near miss; and in the intervening years, they both endured such real trauma and loss. Pippa is more world-weary than many of the other Callaway heroines I've read, and Cull worships her but is also so deeply afraid of being rejected by her. When they get down, they get DOWN, but when they're emotional with one another there's an aching tenderness to it. Also, he has a flute and a gang of child soldiers. So it is wacky.
The Notorious Lord Knightly by Lorraine Heath (out 6/27/23, full review to come).
Lorraine Heath's Counterfeit Scoundrel began her Chessmen: Masters of Seduction series in a way that was elegant and romantic, but not quite as insane as a standard Lorraine Heath. I wondered if she was toning it down a little. Well, wonder no more, because her next release has the high drama we love from Lorraine, as well as great, passionate romance between two people who loved each other five years ago and love each other still.
What makes this book is the interplay between a hero who is truly, deeply sorry and truly, deeply in love, and a heroine who wants to hate him so badly but just can't bring herself to put her heart into it. There's a Secret (or several) and there are laughs--but the plot of this one is less Big Plot and more fabulous character work and hurt feelings and sore hearts and I loved every word of it. Lorraine Heath just knows her fucking shit.
The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian.
I'd read (and greatly enjoyed) The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes; but this book is where the magic happened for me In Sebastian's Highwaymen series. Put together a snarky lordling and a smitten--if rough around the edges--ex-highwayman, plus sex and class commentary? You have a winner.
Cat Sebastian's books are always funny, but this is, like, Benny Hill madcap hijinks funny. They're always emotional, but the wounds here somehow hit deeper. They're always smart, but the social commentary in this one is both clever and real. And you have the classic "they're in love but he's too hurt by the world and life to admit it", which is always a banger. So, so good.

Audiobook Review: “Helm’s Deep”
*singing along to the stirring theme music* Dun-dun-dun-dun duun, dun, duuun, duuuuhn!
And the violins!! Aaaahhhh!!
Poor Ceorl gasping for breath
[Growling] “We were overmastered.” Daaaang, okay Ceorl.
Aww he sounds so happy and relieved when he sees Theoden! :-D
The soaring music as Shadowfax gallops off!! Yessss!
The Rohan violins as Helm’s Deep is described, duuude.
You can hear the arrows whistling past when the narration mentions them. It’s a great detail, but Very Loud LOL
It’s hard to explain exactly what makes Eomer’s voice here so distinct, but the best I can describe it is that it has very strong R’s. There are R’s in everything he says. His accent is nearly American, even though it’s clearly supposed to be British-ish.
The sentinel’s voice sounds so far away LOL
I don’t recognize these horn flourishes from the movie, but they must be associated with Helm’s Deep, ‘cause it was just used twice during the exposition about the stronghold.
You can hear a pebble clattering, or something knocking against the stone, as Legolas and Gimli talk.
Thunder and rain!! The whistle and clatter and thunk of arrows! The roar of the orcs and cry of their trumpets! As usual, the battle scenes are the best part of this audiobook!
THE ISENGARD THEME!! DUUUUDE!!!
I love how often the narration mentions somebody and then you can hear their heavy breathing as if you’re right next to them. It just happened with Eomer and Aragorn, and it really makes you feel like you’re right there.
LOL Aragorn’s yell is so much higher and more strained than Eomer’s.
[“Roooaargh!! *victoriously* Ha-ha-haa!”] LOL was that supposed to be Aragorn??
Eomer’s “aargh, argh!” as he’s wrestling with the orcs
THE TRIUMPHANT FELLOWSHIP THEME WHEN GIMLI SAVES EOMER!!
“Ha-ha haarh, ha-hah!” ROFL I love Gimli’s laugh so much 🤣🤣
“Two! Har har haaa…!”
Legolas’ chuckle with “Heh! I have done better!” There’s so much laughter in this story, and Dragash gets it
The drumsss…
The noise of the axe-strike when Gimli says “twenty-one!”
“Huerh?? We do not shape stone with battle-axes, nor with our finger-nails.”
All of the sound design is great, but the sound of the door shutting and the echo of Legolas and Aragorn’s voices afterwards, as if they’re in a narrow space, stand out to me.
Aragorn’s “hee-hee hee-heh” before he talks is so silly dude 🤣🤣
The operatic chanting as Theoden makes the decision to ride out, duuuude—
THE MOTH THEME AS ARAGORN’S SPEECH FINISHES
ROFLOL the horn of Helm Hammerhand always sounds so much like a fart 🤣🤣🤣
BANG!! THEODEN!!!
THE FELLOWSHIP THEME WHEN GANDALF SHOWS UP!!!!
THE TRIUMPHANT SWELL AS THE BATTLE IS WON!!!! YESSSSSS!!!

Exploring the Rise of Online Book Stores in India: A New Era of Reading
Tumblr media
India has a rich history of literature, with centuries of storytelling and an expansive love for books. Over the years, the way people buy books has shifted dramatically. With the rise of digital platforms, more readers are turning to online book store in India for their reading needs. Whether you're looking for the latest bestseller or a rare academic text, online bookstores offer an unmatched level of convenience, variety, and accessibility. This blog will explore the factors driving the rise of online book stores in India and why they have become an essential part of the modern reading experience.
1. The Shift from Physical Bookstores to Online Platforms
In the past, the only way to purchase a book was by visiting a physical bookstore. However, with technological advancements and the increasing penetration of the internet in India, the paradigm has shifted.
Convenience of Online Shopping: Unlike physical bookstores, which have fixed hours and are limited by location, online book stores in India are accessible 24/7 from anywhere in the country. Readers no longer need to travel to a store to find a book—they can browse thousands of titles with just a few clicks.
Wider Reach: For readers living in remote or rural areas, online book stores are a game-changer. Many regions in India lack physical bookstores, making it difficult for readers to access a wide variety of books. Online bookstores break down these geographical barriers, bringing books to every corner of the country.
COVID-19 Pandemic: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift toward online shopping, including books. During lockdowns, physical stores were closed, and people turned to e-commerce platforms for their needs. As a result, online book sales soared, further solidifying the role of e-commerce in the book industry.
This shift to online platforms is now an integral part of the book-buying experience, offering readers the convenience and accessibility that physical stores cannot.
2. The Advantages of E-books and Digital Reading
The rise of online book stores in India has also given a significant boost to digital reading formats such as e-books and audiobooks.
Instant Access: E-books provide instant access to reading material. Once purchased, the book is available for download, eliminating the need for shipping and waiting. This is particularly useful for avid readers who want to start reading immediately after making a purchase.
Affordable Options: E-books are often more affordable than physical copies since there are no printing or shipping costs involved. Online platforms frequently offer deals and discounts on e-books, making them a cost-effective alternative for readers.
Portable Libraries: Digital reading devices like e-readers, tablets, and smartphones can store hundreds of books, offering portability that traditional books cannot. Readers can carry an entire library in their pockets, making it easier to read on the go.
Eco-Friendly Reading: E-books are a more environmentally friendly option as they reduce the demand for paper and the carbon footprint associated with shipping physical books.
The growing popularity of e-books and audiobooks is revolutionizing how people consume literature in India, providing more options for readers who prefer digital content.
3. The Role of Technology in Enhancing the Reading Experience
Technology plays a critical role in the success of online book stores in India. These platforms have transformed the way readers interact with books, offering advanced features that enhance the overall experience.
Search and Filter Tools: Modern online bookstores use sophisticated search engines and filters, allowing readers to easily find books by title, author, genre, or even specific keywords. This technology helps readers quickly locate what they’re looking for, saving time and effort.
Recommendations Based on Interests: Many online platforms use algorithms to track users' preferences and reading history, providing personalized book recommendations. These suggestions make it easier for readers to discover new titles based on their interests.
Interactive Book Previews: Some online bookstores offer the option to preview a few pages of a book before purchasing. This feature helps readers decide if a book aligns with their tastes before committing to a purchase.
Customer Reviews and Ratings: Online bookstores allow readers to leave reviews and ratings for books, offering valuable feedback for potential buyers. This community-driven approach helps build trust in the platform and ensures that readers make informed decisions.
By incorporating advanced technology, online book stores create a more engaging and efficient shopping experience for readers.
4. Supporting Indian Authors and Independent Publishers
In addition to offering a wide selection of international titles, online book stores in India have become a powerful platform for promoting Indian authors and independent publishers.
Promoting Local Talent: Indian authors are finding greater visibility on online platforms, where their books are often highlighted alongside international bestsellers. This is particularly beneficial for emerging writers who may not have access to traditional publishing houses.
Self-Publishing Opportunities: Many online bookstores offer self-publishing platforms that allow independent authors to publish and sell their books without going through a traditional publisher. This democratization of publishing has led to a surge in diverse voices and unique perspectives in Indian literature.
Niche Genres and Regional Languages: Online bookstores provide a platform for books in niche genres, as well as books in regional Indian languages, which may not be available in mainstream physical bookstores. This diversity ensures that readers from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds can find books that resonate with them.
By supporting Indian authors and independent publishers, online book stores contribute to the growth of Indian literature and ensure that readers have access to a wide array of voices and stories.
5. Book Gifting and Subscription Services
Online bookstores have also made it easier for readers to share their love for books through gifting and subscription services.
Book Gifting: Whether it’s for a birthday, holiday, or special occasion, online bookstores allow users to gift books to loved ones with ease. Many platforms offer gift wrapping, personalized messages, and the option to send books directly to the recipient.
Gift Cards: For those unsure about which book to choose, gift cards are a great alternative. Online bookstores in India offer digital gift cards that can be sent via email, allowing the recipient to pick their preferred book.
Subscription Services: Some online bookstores offer subscription services where readers can sign up to receive a curated selection of books every month. These services are designed for avid readers who enjoy discovering new authors and genres.
These options add an element of thoughtfulness and personalization to the reading experience, making books a perfect gift for any occasion.
6. Promoting Literacy and Education in India
Online book stores in India play an essential role in promoting literacy and education, especially in areas where access to educational resources may be limited.
