Okay thanks to many amazing fanfics I've been thinking about lot about the gods lately and how they interact with each other and the over lap of their chosen mortals. "No god can undo what other one does" (I'm so sorry I cannot remember which fic this line is from but it's so good and sticking in my brain constantly. And sheep logstics: the saga is highly influencing this. If you have not read this series you absolutely should go do so immediately) so I've been imaging a scene between Hermes and Athena like:
Hermes cupped his hands around odysseus's head, not quiet touching, but odysseus felt the god's long fingers burrowing into his crown, felt the weight of them down to his bones.
"I've put a lot of work into this family" his smirk and affection audible, slicing the air above odysseus's head. "So Pallas Athena, most favored of Zeus's daughters, wisest of all the gods, what will you give me for him?"
#Odysseus#Athena#Hermes#This is highly influenced by sheep logistics: the saga#(Please please go read it it's so so good)#The gods#The intricate way the gods interact with each other#The way everything has an element of power play#The way they /rage/ when another god dares to touch /their/ mortal#And divinity touching you/showing interest in you leaves a mark both on your life and your body#So I imagine the gods mark their mortals with some symbol or scar that wards the other gods away#That marked mortal becomes part of the gods territory and no other god is allowed to come near without permission#This is also me combined canons again because in epic Hermes seems to genuinely care about his great grandson but in the odyssey#Hermes goes and helps odysseus out because Athena told him to#So I'm headcanoning that Hermes stopped by when odysseus was young he favored the family as they were his family twice over#And all of them are quick witted quick footed tricksters so he likes them and stops by for offerings/dinner randomly#Until that is Athena starts showing interest in odysseus's training. And well Hermes knows that a war is coming and knows too that#The end of the era of heros and thus gods involvement is coming to a close soon as well and his grandson has such a pachent for stories#Knows that if Athena trains him his story will be known for generations and thus so will the gods#Knows too a loosing battle when he sees one. Athena will win the claim over him odysseus is after all a great grandson not a son#So Hermes will graciously step back remove his claim from odysseus will not be seen by his grandson ever again but not for free#He will make sure he is well compensated for the loss of such a devotee#(What does he get from Athena? Idk idk maybe a favor or the promise that she'll side with him over zeus one time maybe#Something for odysseus as well? The promise that he will be allowed to retire peacefully when the time comes? )#And this adds a delicious angsty layer to the 'don't disappoint me' line#Because I imagine after Athena makes the deal with Hermes she and odysseus have a conversation like#Athena: if I am owing Hermes then you will owe me. Make sure you don't waste my time little king#Pre-canon (?)#The inherent fucked up dynamic of gods and mortals relationships
